Batman 89: Billy Dee Williams Finally Becomes Two-Face in Burtonverse Comic
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The Batman Burtonverse is coming back in a big way. Not only is Warner Bros. bringing back Michael Keaton as Batman in the upcoming Flash movie but DC Comics is set to publish a 6-issue limited series that explores what happened next after Tim Burton’s first Gotham City outing rolled credits.
Batman ’89 brings together the movie’s original screenwriter, Sam Hamm, with artist Joe Quinones, who has been tied to a revival of the Burtonverse in the comics for quite some time. Quinones previously pitched a similar miniseries to DC, at the time to be written by Kate Leth (Hellcat). While the idea was rejected, Quinones’ designs for a comic book sequel to Batman have received tons of praise from fans in the years since. It’s no surprise, then, that the idea stuck at DC, and that we’ll finally get to see Quinones’ take on the Burtonverse.
Hamm’s return to the Burtonverse is also notable. After the massive blockbuster success of Batman, Burton, Keaton, and Hamm were quickly tapped to make a sequel, with Hamm taking a first stab at the script, which would have introduced Robin as well as shown District Attorney Harvey Dent’s transformation into Two-Face. You probably know what happened next: Burton was unhappy with Hamm’s script (the director detests the Boy Wonder, for one thing) and said he would not direct the picture unless he could make a “Tim Burton movie,” not a Batman sequel, according to Hamm. The rest is history: Heathers screenwriter Daniel Waters replaced Hamm and the result was Batman Returns.
Since Batman ’89 will “pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director,” the series is an opportunity for Hamm to finally deliver his vision for “Batman II.” As you’d expect, one of the storylines from his unused script that will be front and center in the miniseries is Harvey’s villainous turn, which means we’ll finally get to see Billy Dee Williams’ version of the character become Two-Face within the Burtonverse.
In fact, a variant cover drawn by the legendary Jerry Ordway, who drew the beloved comic book adaptation of Burton’s movie, gives us our first official look at William’s Dent as the villain he was destined to become:
First revealed by excellent comic book site 13th Dimension, the cover features Williams’ Two-Face looming over the Dark Knight, who’s swinging across the streets of Gotham wearing what looks like (at least in the bright lights of the city) a comics-accurate blue-ish cape and cowl. It’s a nice reimagining of what Keaton would have looked like if he’d donned the blue and gray of his comic book counterparts back in 1989 as opposed to the all-black suit that’s become the standard look of all movie Batmen since.
Back in 2016, Quinones also shared a sketch of what his Two-Face would look like, and we can only hope this design, which fuses the real-life actor with the comic book character perfectly, made it into the final version of the book:
Although he never got to play Two-Face in the Burton movies, Williams did eventually voice the character in The Lego Batman Movie, but that’s not really a continuation of his work in Batman, just a fun cameo. The new comic is the real deal for Williams’ Two-Face.
While Batman ’89 will be available digitally first on July 27, the series will hit stands as a physical book on Aug. 10. You can check out the full solicitation for the first issue below:

Step back into the Gotham of Tim Burton’s seminal classic Batman movies! Batman ’89 brings in screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) and artist Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero) to pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director. Gotham becomes torn in two as citizens dressed as Batman and The Joker duke it out in the streets. As D.A. Harvey Dent tries to keep the city together, he targets the one problem tearing it apart: BATMAN! And he’ll get Bruce Wayne’s help in taking down the Dark Knight!

Mentions of Padmé in Star Wars Canon in Works Set After Revenge of the Sith
This post is going to look at each and every one of Padmé’s post-death mentions.
This post is going to list things in an in-universe chronological order. I am also going to try and look at all canon mentions of her as of September 12th, 2018. If I missed any, please let me know!
I start with the letter Bail Organa sent his wife while he was in transit with Leia. This comes from Star Wars Backstories Princess Leia: Royal Rebel by Calliope Glass with illustrations by Joe Quinones
Tumblr media
From: Senator Bail Organa To: Queen Breha Organa Via: Secure Transmission
My darling, forgive my rush in writing this. I will fill in all the details as soon as I see you, which I believe will be soon indeed. This ship is scheduled to enter hyperspace in less than an hour. But I felt some warning was due to you before I appear. You will understand why when I arrive.
Terrible events - catastrophic events - have been unfolding across the galaxy. But it is heartbreaking on a more personal level. I can hardly bear to tell you but Senator Amidala is gone - a tragedy too grim to believe.
There is more, Breha. And it will change our lives forever in a profound way. You will understand as soon as we arrive on Alderaan.
Your loving husband, Bail
While I am glad Bail didn’t just show up with Leia fully unannounced, I am a bit surprised by this confirmation that Breha really had no clue her husband was coming home with an actual tiny person for them to raise. I mean “it will change our lives forever in a profound way” really is an understatement there Bail. You just became a father, the Jedi are dead, and Palpatine just made himself Emperor. Everything changed all at once.
This letter also reminds me of how much I wish we knew anything at all about Padmé and Breha’s relationship with each other?
The second place Padmé is mentioned after Revenge of the Sith is the comic book series that follows Vader’s exploits immediately after the film. All of these remembrances of Padmé are at their core not about her at all but instead about Vader.
Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith (2017 - )'s first arc, The Chosen One had flashbacks and visions and conversations concerning Padmé in Parts I, and V, and she was mentioned by name in the opening crawls of Parts I, II and III. This comic has been written by Charles Soule and drawn by Giuseppe Camuncoli for its entire run.
The first issue of the comic opens on a continuation of the scene where Vader first learns of Padmé’s death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things quickly dissolve into Vader and Palpatine fighting, and Palpatine making it perfectly clear that he could kill Vader at any time if he ever so desired.
In Issue #5, while on Mustafar calling on the Dark Side to make a kyber crystal bleed so he can construct a new crimson lightsaber, Vader sees visions of his past. One of these is a brief glimpse of Padmé.
Tumblr media
The three opening crawls that mention her do so because they contain short summaries of the events of Revenge of the Sith, particularly what directly led to the creation of Darth Vader.
She is next seen in issue #14, which is set a year later in 18 BBY. This time Vader is having a flashback to the start of Season 4 of The Clone Wars and the end of the Mon Cala arc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(no, I do not know what happened to Anakin’s scar here)
Here he seems to actually be missing her. This also marks the first time we see Vader talking about someone who isn’t Padmé, while actually talking about Padmé.
He does this again in the second Annual for the series (written by Chuck Wendig with pencils by Leonard Kirk). Here he has a conversation with an Imperial Loyalty Officer about Galen Erso that is very overtly actually about Padmé and her staunchly pacifist views. It is also worth remembering when reading these panels that Jyn is three years older than the twins, and it is very possible that is an older holo of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet even as he says he has no affection for pacifists, he later sends Lyra Erso an anonymous warning that her family may be in danger and that she should take measures to protect them. It seems part of him can still empathize with the spouse of a pacifist, with a family that might be torn asunder by Palpatine’s machinations.
He also has a vision with Padmé in it during that same annual, when he returns to Geonosis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In issue #20 of this series, Palpatine presents Vader with a reward for killing so many Jedi (we’re back to the Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli creative team).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Vader demands that Palpatine give him his own planet to control. Palpatine’s first suggestion to the request is...
Tumblr media
Then Palpatine suggest Tatooine, and Vader demands he be given Mustafar instead.
In the following issue (#21) Palpatine asks Vader why he wants Mustafar.
Palpatine’s interpretation Vader’s response is that Vader intends to try and bring Padmé back from the dead, and that when he was in the cave on Mustafar bleeding his crystal he sensed immense power there that might make that possible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One year after the fall of Republic and Padmé’s death (18 BBY), in the book Ahsoka by E.K. Johnston, various people who knew Padmé spend a lot of time thinking about her.
Yet as much as her memory is framed by her friends coming to terms with her loss, the first mention of her comes from a flashback from Anakin’s point of view that shows us his thoughts just moments before he met Ahsoka for the very first time.
I’m not including it because it is looong before her death, but it is worth noting that the passage is immediately followed by one about new-father Bail Organa trying to get some work done in his office on Alderaan, as his tiny one-year old daughter plays in the room with him. As Leia plays he thinks about Padmé twice in passing - but he never thinks of her directly by name, as this passage (which is far longer than this segment) is really about Leia, not Padmé.
Tumblr media
Padmé’s next mention in the book is as the individual Ahsoka imagines she is seeking advice from when trying to come up with plans that will help her and the people she has come to care about survive.
Tumblr media
I do wonder if the fact she hears Padmé’s voice during her meditation and not Anakin’s or Obi-Wan’s has something to do with the fact that both of her masters are alive (something Ahsoka does not know) and Padmé is dead.
I mean I am not outright saying that Fulcrum, the legend who established all of the Rebellion’s information networks, was being directly advised by Padmé’s ghost.... but I am def. suggesting that was a possibility.
Padmé’s next mention in this book is from the text’s one brief glimpse at Obi-Wan Kenobi. Here her death is mentioned as an illustration of one of the many ways the galaxy has come unhinged for Obi-Wan.
Tumblr media
Later when Ahsoka is investigating Bail Organa and deciding if she should trust him or not, she finds R2-D2 on a ship that belongs to him. R2 quickly gets to work trying to talk Ahsoka into working with Bail, and guess whose memory this absurdly loyal droid appeals to?
Tumblr media
This leads to Ahsoka calling Padmé a bad role model, which is both one of the cutest things ever, and also probably a galactic first. Also, just the mention of Padmé’s name makes Bail emotional, and I just can’t.
Tumblr media
Not surprisingly, Ahsoka casually mentioning Padmé and the danger Force-sensitive children are in all in the same conversation, causes new-father Bail to think about his daughter.
Tumblr media
During their next meeting, Bail makes a vague comment to Ahsoka about Leia being like Padmé to suss out Ahsoka's awareness of his daughter’s parentage. Ahsoka’s response makes it clear she has no idea who Leia’s bio-parents are.
Tumblr media
She is mentioned again five years after her death (14 BBY) in the book Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp. This is not at all surprising, since a large segment of this book is told from Darth Vader’s perspective.
Thinking about Padmé seems to be a form of torture for Vader. Even as he uses it to torture himself, he refuses to acknowledge the power the memory of her has over him, insisting he no longer cares about her at all.
Also can I just say, I really really hate Sheev Palpatine? (I mean this in the sense of him being a well written villain who I REALLY enjoy despising)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From here we go to fifteen years after her death (4 BBY), and a pin-up poster of Padmé seen in Season 2, Episode 2 of Star Wars Rebels “Relics of the Old Republic.” This poster was first seen in The Clone Wars, and Rex, Gregor, and Wolffe had it hanging on the wall of the AT-TE they were living in.
The poster is a gross literal bombshell image - in that it was something the Clones used to put on their bombs during the Clone Wars. You can barely see it in the episode, it’s just a background detail, but here is a good look at that specific poster’s design as used in The Clone Wars.
Tumblr media
It should be noted it was one of two such images of Padmé we know was used in this manner during the Clone Wars. The other had her in the orange robes of a Royal Naboo Handmaiden.
A few months later, in the book “Leia, Princess of Alderaan” by Claudia Gray, just after Leia’s sixteenth birthday/the sixteenth anniversary of Padmé’s death (3 BBY), Leia takes a trip to the Naboo system. She does technically tell her parents where she is going - she is visiting one of Naboo’s moons, not the planet itself, and she gives them the moon’s name when they ask her about her destination. Neither of them recognize the name Onoam as one of Naboo’s moons, so they don’t really react when she tells them that that’s where she’s headed.
She arrives fully unaware that she has any connection to the place, and due to her ignorance she almost fully exposes the truth of her parentage to Palpatine.
Things start out innocently enough. The Force nudging Leia in Naboo’s direction, trying to let her know the place has some significance to her, while she logically talks herself out of her sudden and unexpected warm feelings for the place.
Tumblr media
Upon arriving on Onoam, Leia greets Naboo’s queen - Dalné - and together the two of them go to investigate the conditions the miners on Naboo’s moon are living under.
By the end of their inspection of the mine Leia’s dress is filthy, and she can not possibly wear it to her next appointment - a meeting with the Imperial Moff in charge of the Naboo sector, Quarsh Panaka.
Dalné offers to let Leia borrow one of her dresses, and tells her all about how before the Empire the Queens of Naboo and their handmaidens had real power.
Tumblr media
So sixteen year old Leia meets Quarsh Panaka for the first time wearing the jubilation dress, seen here being modeled by a fourteen year old Padmé.
Tumblr media
Panaka has some feelings when he sees Leia in it.
As in Panaka (who if you don’t remember the names of people in Star Wars that well, was the captain of the Naboo Security Forces in The Phantom Menace) takes ONE look at Leia in that dress and immediately knows that he’s talking to Padmé’s daughter.
He is understandably surprised, and he starts asking Leia questions. Does she know where her parents adopted her from? When exactly she was born? Her vague answers, the people Bail Organa once associated with, and Leia’s adoption so close to the anniversary of Padmé’s death only confirm his suspicions. He informs Leia that he is going to tell Palpatine all about her, as soon as he can, and for her part Leia honestly has no clue what is going on or why this Imperial Moff is so obsessed with something as boring as her adoption.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dalné and Leia’s conversation is cut off by a massive explosion. Saw Guerra assassinated Panaka by blowing up his home, just as they left. Leia is almost caught in the blast, but rather than be upset about seeing someone die for the very first time in her life, or her near death experience, what scares her is the idea that her parents (who she just learned were Rebels immediately before this) may have had something to do with the explosion. When she confronts them she is confused by why her father is so furious she went to the Naboo system, like that was the real danger and not the explosion - and why her mother almost faints when Leia tells her about her conversation with Panaka. (I include this because there are people who question if Breha knew who Leia’s bio-parents were. Of course she knew! But in case you had any doubt, here you go).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A year and a half later (~1 BBY) in the book Thrawn: Alliances by Timothy Zahn, Darth Vader and Grand Admiral Thrawn go on a trip to the planet Batuu, and from there journey to Mokivj. They had previously visited these planets together during the Clone Wars, and had been searching for Padmé at the time. Vader doesn’t think about Padmé the entire journey long, but after they leave he almost allows himself to mourn her and the child(ren) he doesn’t know are still alive.
Tumblr media
About one year after that (One Week BBY) a Jawa named Jot who worked in a Sandcrawler erasing droid’s memories snuck to his secret room to enjoy his favorite passtime. You see, Jot had found a highly illegal droid memory reader (which he named Storyteller) that projected a droid’s memories like a movie. He liked to watch the memories of as many droids as he could. This time he was so moved by the memories he observed, he decided not to do his job and let the droid retain them. Jot is of course from Griffin McElroy’s Stories in the Sand, which was part of From a Certain Point of View.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A day or so later, Obi-Wan Kenobi stood next to the ruin of that same sandcrawler. All of its occupants were dead, and young Luke Skywalker had just rushed off to check on his Aunt and Uncle. After Luke left, in the short story in From a Certain Point of View, Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray (not to be confused with the upcoming novel of hers by the same name) the ghost of Qui-Gon Jinn joined Obi-Wan to talk about the events taking place around them.
When Obi-Wan speaks to Qui-Gon about how he knows his time on Tatooine has reached its end, he mentions how much Leia’s holo reminded him of Padmé (and Anakin as well of course), and Qui-Gon points out how impossibly strong Obi-Wan truly is.
Tumblr media
The short Beru Whitesun Lars in that same anthology (by Meg Cabot) has the dead Beru Lars reflecting on her life.
Tumblr media
Time of Death by Cavan Scott, again in that same anthology, gives us Obi-Wan Kenobi’s perspective on his death.
Tumblr media
She is one of the people he keeps thinking about as he adjusts to being a ghost.
Tumblr media
In the graphic novel Princess Leia (2015) #2 written by Mark Waid and drawn by Terry Dodson, just a day or two after A New Hope (~Two Days ABY)  Leia visits Theed on a mission to find and unite all surviving Alderaanians. Upon arriving in the city she encounters a mural of Padmé, and she sees it turn to watch her as she walks past. When her travelling companion, fellow Alderaanian Rebel Evaan Verlaine, tells her she did not see the mural’s head move, Leia dismisses what she saw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Heir to the Jedi by Keven Hearne, we learn a little about what Luke was always told by Owen and Beru about his mother. (Unknown point in 0 ABY)
Tumblr media
It is not long after this, in Darth Vader (2015-2016) #4 written by Kieron Gillian with art by Salvador Larocca, that Darth Vader visits Geonosis again. When asked if he had ever been there before, Vader flashes back to his first visit to the planet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also see Padmé’s J-type 327 Nubian starship again in this issue. After this he uses it on and off in the series (this was, in the real world, its first appearance as Vader’s ship).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, in issue 7 when Boba Fett reports in to tell Vader everything he has learned about the pilot who destroyed the Death Star, Vader has a ton of flashbacks as he comes to terms with what Boba Fett discovered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In issue 9 Vader sends his agent Doctor Chelli Aphra to hunt someone down for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So in issue 10 Aphra heads to Naboo so she can interrogate Padmé’s mortician. Specifically to see if she can get him to admit the extent he falsified what was seen at Padmé’s funeral.
I do wonder if perhaps Vader wanted confirmation that she was actually dead, that maybe he was letting himself hope that she was out there somewhere in hiding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then they killed him.
I sometimes think about how brave this man had to have been to protect Leia the way he did until the very end. He knew they were aware of Luke and that nothing he could say would change that, that protesting that statement may lead to more torture, and then accidentally letting Leia’s existence slip. So he leaned into their knowledge of Luke, and met his end.
We see her again in issue 24.
Tumblr media
In this issue, Vader’s suit is shut down. As his life support systems no longer function and he blacks out, Vader fantasizes about traveling to Mustafar in 19 BBY. There he would slaughter Obi-Wan, run Anakin Skywalker through with his lightsaber, and then...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is when Vader finds the strength of will to turn his suit back on.
About four years later, Luke and Leia talk about her in Return of the Jedi (4 ABY).
Luke: Leia... do you remember your mother? Your real mother? Leia: Just a little bit. She died when I was very young. Luke: What do you remember? Leia: Just...images, really. Feelings. Luke:  Tell me. Leia: She was very beautiful. Kind, but...sad.  Luke: I have no memory of my mother. I never knew her.
Exactly 20 days after Return of the Jedi, on Naboo they experienced the Naboo Incursions. The Naboo Incursions are shown in the comic Shattered Empire, are mentioned in the book Lost Stars, and are two levels in the game Battlefront II. It is in Battlefront II that we learn that to end the battle Leia utilized a failsafe that either Padmé or Jamillia (given the allusion to the Trade Federation Invasion I really think it was Padmé) put in place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leia: Theed has a defense system. Something we can use to stop the Empire, but the storm has damaged power relays across the city. Until they’re restored, we can’t activate anything. Split up. Repair the relays. When you’re done, regroup at the palace.   Del: What are we activiating? Leia: The Queen took precautions before the Clone War to keep Naboo safe from future invasions. An ion pulse that would disable any threat outside the palace.
The failsafe worked. The Rebel forces gathered inside the palace, Leia set off the ion pulse, and Naboo was liberated from Imperial control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As in, a defensive measure Padmé installed was (in Leia’s hands) the key to Naboo’s liberation from the Empire.
Less than a year after that, in Aftermath: Life Debt by Chuck Wendig, Leia (who is pregnant with Ben) has dreams where she is Padmé, dying just after giving birth to herself and her brother.
Tumblr media
Padmé is next mentioned in Bloodline by Claudia Gray (28 ABY).
The first time Leia mentions having done research on her. She is dwelling on her worries about the New Republic’s government structure, particularly the Centrist Party, that keeps pushing for more centralized power and control and just pushed through the idea that the New Republic should create the position of the First Senator.
(The New Republic had two major political parties. The Populists, who wanted the New Republic to be a decentralized network of sovereign systems. Each system governs itself, but they come together in the Senate to hash out matters of galactic import and come up with some baseline rules to maintain peace between them. The Centrist party wanted a more centralized power structure, and expansions of those baseline regulations. Essentially they wanted the New Republic to exist more like a county unto itself, with a figurehead with executive powers [called the First Senator] and an expanded standing army of its own [they literally called themselves the “law and order” party]. Or in short, the Populists wanted to model things on the Republic of old [before the Clone War], and the Centrists the wanted it modeled on the Empire or how the Republic was at the very end).
Tumblr media
The second time Padmé is mentioned is during the audio recording Leia’s political opponents found and played on the senate floor in the middle of an important vote that was being broadcast everywhere all over the holonet.
This recording was done by Bail, and left in a location only Leia was supposed to have access to. It was created so that in case of his death, Leia could learn the truth of her biological parentage.
What is described here is not when the recording was played on the Senate floor, but rather when a woman working with the First Order first found and listened to the recording.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The day after the recording is played on the Senate floor, Leia decides to withdraw her nomination for First Senator, and for the sake of her family attempts to do some damage control. In order to do that, she appeals to Padmé’s memory.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It almost worked.
Almost.
The center of a major scandal, and ready to retire before any of this began anyway, Leia decided she would serve out the rest of her term and then not seek reelection as New Alderaan’s senator. Instead she immediately funneled her immense rage over what occurred (she almost Fell) into founding the Resistance.
At some point the Resistance’s leaders looked over the Rebellion’s documents together, and wrote notes on all of them. This is a page from those files. (From The Rebel Files by Daniel Wallace)
Tumblr media
Recorded weeks before her death. Who would my mother have become under the revolution? - Leia
Around six years after the revelation on the Senate floor, just a month to a week before the start of TFA (34 ABY), in Poe Dameron (2016 - 2018) issues #21-24 Written by Charles Soule with art by Angel Unzueta, Leia uses something she inherited from Padmé in an elaborate scheme to rescue Lor San Tekka (the guy in the opening scene of TFA. The one who knows how to find Luke) from a vault on Cato Neimoidia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The plan was for Leia to pose as a wealthy potential customer, sneak Poe into the vaults, have Poe sneak Lor San Tekka out of his cell and into the hidden chamber in with the dresses while Poe himself snuck away to a ship they left for him to escape on, and then all of them leave together. Unfortunately the dresses - with Lor San Tekka hiding among them, wound up getting stolen by the First Order. They dump them into hyperspace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pain that this causes Leia has nothing to do with Padmé, and everything to do with the fact Lor San Tekka was her best lead to find Luke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She also had a brief shout out in The Legends of Luke Skywalker by Ken Liu. In a story about Luke that may or may not have happened that the droids of the galaxy tell each other, Luke pretends to be a protocol droid and does his best Threepio impersonation. Part of that act includes this “fun fact.”
Tumblr media
Those are all of Padmé’s current post-ROTS mentions in canon
So, how is Padmé remembered?
She is the object of Vader’s obsession.
Then there is Padmé as Luke and Leia’s mother.
This is her second most defining role, which is bit strange when you consider that she never even held either of them once. That Padmé in life never knew them in any way - only even knew she was having twins in her dying moments. I am not saying she shouldn’t be remembered in connection to them, of course, but it is strange that they define her memory to such a large degree.
We also have Padmé as a politician and symbol.
She adorns buildings in Theed as a mural.
Sexualized posters of her still exist and are hung up by people loyal to the Old Republic (namely the three chip-less Clones).
Her legacy as someone who stood up to Palpatine remains, but mainly for those who seek it out. She inspires people like her mortician to remain strong and resolute.
Decisions she made still protect Naboo.
People who knew her, who were loyal to her, also seem to be able to rationalize their loyalty to Palpatine. This is not too much of a surprise. After all, she did appointed him as a Senator. She was the one who called for the vote that made him Chancellor. He mentored her for years.  If you were not in the know, it would be easy to believe she was his supporter.
Yet still, even years after her death, Leia can appeal to her memory as a presence powerful enough to counterbalance Vader’s own reputation, and it almost worked.
To Lor San Tekka, she is one of the great heroes of galactic history.
There are also rare fleeting glimpses of Padmé as a friend who was lost and continues to be mourned.
