From Delhi to China: How Fake SIMs Fueled a Cross-Border Cyber Crime Spree
Tumblr media
In a commendable joint effort, the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttarakhand Police, in conjunction with the Cyber Crime Police Station, has successfully arrested two foreign nationals, 28-year-old Tenzing Chophel and 29-year-old Lalita Thapa. Both individuals, originating from Tibetan and Bhutanese backgrounds, were apprehended in Delhi, marking a crucial milestone in the ongoing battle against cybercrime.

The arrested duo stands accused of orchestrating a far-reaching online fraud operation, with their activities spanning across borders. Their alleged involvement includes dispatching over 500 counterfeit SIM cards to locations in Hong Kong, Vietnam, and China. These fraudulent SIM cards were linked to a series of scams, prompting a comprehensive investigation by the police to unravel the full extent of their operations.
Chophel and Thapa are reported to have employed a sophisticated modus operandi, involving the creation of counterfeit websites mimicking reputable companies. Utilizing communication channels such as WhatsApp, email, and various social media platforms, the fraudsters posed as human resources personnel and employees of well-known companies. Their aim was to deceive individuals into undertaking online tasks with promises of quick financial gains.

The fraudulent scheme revolved around an online tasks scam, where unsuspecting victims were directed to download the Telegram app through a provided link and join a group. Once in the group, they were instructed to engage in activities such as liking and subscribing to various YouTube videos using the Signal app. Exploiting job seekers' vulnerabilities, the fraudsters further convinced individuals to invest money with the promise of higher returns, accumulating substantial amounts through a series of deceitful financial transactions.
The Special Task Force's revelations shed light on the accused individuals' connections to multiple scams across the country, with their online fraud operations amounting to over Rs 22 lakh. This disclosure implicates them in a larger network of cybercrime, emphasizing the urgent need for heightened cybersecurity awareness and vigilance among the general public.

The apprehension of Tenzing Chophel and Lalita Thapa represents a significant blow to cyber fraud operations within the country. This successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies and specialized units. It also highlights the ever-evolving nature of cybercrime and the need for continuous adaptation and innovation in cybersecurity measures.

बिहार में विरोध प्रदर्शन पड़ेगा भारी, पासपोर्ट-नौकरी के समय पुराना रिकॉर्ड याद दिलाएगी पुलिस

An Interview
It was March 2020 I had started giving interviews for internship. why you may ask. why an internship? it was because I wasn't getting any job and every company was asking for experience. Now from where should I get the experience because I had a BE degree and an M.Tech. degree and no experience so I decided to get some experience via internship. I applied for many internships and gave many interviews also but all in vain.
Then I found an internship position open at Pranab Mukherjee Foundation. I applied there and then I was asked to write an article on the topic "Dams are temples of modern India: Agree or disagree" I wrote it and after a few days on the 12th of March I got a call that my interview is scheduled on 13th at 11:30 a.m. I reached the interview venue at 11:15 a.m. and I was asked to wait; then, after some time I was called in for the interview. I went there and the interviewer ask me to come in and sit, I sat and he started asking me questions, he was mostly interested in my solar related project which I did during my BE so he was asking questions about solar panels and its connections which I answered and there were some questions whose answers I knew but at that time it just didn't strike my mind e.g. what is the full form of SCADA? AND I WAS LIKE HOW CAN I FORGET THIS. He also took my typing test which, I feel, I must have done fairly well. And in the end, he said you will get a call in two-three days.
On 14th I had train for home and on 20th I had to return. I didn't get any call till 19th which was already 6 days since my interview (I thought I am not selected that's why not getting call) so I decided to stay at home for a few more days and I cancelled my return ticket of 20th.
But...
I got a call on 20th from Pranab Mukherjee Foundation that I have been selected for the internship and that I have to join on 25th. I was regretting, why did I cancel my ticket? So I booked another ticket of 24th and then on 21st Modi Ji came on TV asking citizens for Janata curfew on 22nd so my family members asked not to go to Delhi but I didn't cancel my ticket but the situation of COVID was worsening and I wasn't allowed to board my train on 24th and on 24th night Modi Ji came on TV (again!) and announced that there will be a 21 day lock down in India starting from 25th.
And that is how I lost my first and only opportunity of an internship to COVID lockdowns.
But why was this interview so special for me?
To answer this, let me introduce you to my interviewer Dr. Krishna Kant Paul.
Dr. K. K. Paul is a former IPS officer who served as police commissioner of Delhi for more than 3 years. He was a member of UPSC for almost 6 years. He also has experience of working in IB and RAW. He then went on to become governor of Northeastern states Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and also Uttarakhand.
Getting interviewed by such a personality was an honour for me and clearing the interview was way beyond my explanation & that is why this interview is one of the most memorable moments of my life.

Chinese-Linked Scam Busted: Mastermind of Rs 21 Crore Online Job Scam Arrested By Uttarakhand STF
Tumblr media
Dehradun's Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttarakhand Police has successfully apprehended the alleged mastermind behind a massive ₹21 crore fraud scheme that targeted unsuspecting individuals with the lure of a work-from-home opportunity. The accused, identified as Rushabh Sharma from Haryana, was captured following an extensive and meticulous investigation. It is believed that Sharma was the architect of this elaborate fraudulent operation, which had connections to Chinese interests.

The case first came to light when a complaint was filed at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Dehradun. The victim, in search of an online job, received an enticing WhatsApp message from an unfamiliar number. This message promised a work-from-home opportunity associated with the renowned Marriott Bonvoy Hotel. The victim was then contacted through the Telegram app by an individual named Sonia, who claimed to represent the esteemed hotel group.
Sonia baited the victim with a scheme that initially involved earning commissions by booking hotels online. To initiate the victim's involvement, a website bearing the URL "https://www.marriottwork.com" was employed for registration, and a Telegram group was established using the link "https://t.me/+CSYSadhAdYk2NDII." Subsequently, the victim was assigned various financial transactions, ultimately leading to a significant loss of ₹19,94,853.
Legal Action and Thorough Investigation
In response to this fraudulent activity, a case was swiftly registered under Section 420/120B of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Dehradun. An extensive technical investigation was initiated, which eventually led the authorities to the suspect's location in Haryana. A team was promptly dispatched to the neighboring state to further probe the matter, and after rigorous efforts, they succeeded in apprehending Rushabh Sharma, a 27-year-old resident of Gurgaon, Haryana. Additionally, Sharma's Realme mobile phone, alleged to have been used in the commission of the crimes, was seized by the police.

Uncovering an Expansive Network
Throughout the investigation, the authorities unveiled a convoluted network of fraudulent bank accounts linked to the accused. These accounts were tied to over 85 complaints registered on the national portal, amounting to a staggering ₹21 crore. They were scattered across various locations, including Gujarat, Delhi NCR, and Punjab. Notably, the accused had also set up dummy bank accounts targeted at Chinese customers.
The perpetrators employed various tactics, including generating fake GST and import-export registration numbers, before establishing these bank accounts. These accounts were predominantly "CURRENT Accounts" created using PAN cards, with Aadhaar cards used for SMS alerts. Subsequently, they provided net banking credentials to foreign customers, enabling them to make cryptocurrency purchases and effectively erase any traces of the money trail. To evade scrutiny, accounts were established under the guise of agricultural firms and societies.

This significant arrest by the Uttarakhand Police's Special Task Force represents a substantial victory in the battle against online fraud and cybercrime. It serves as a stark reminder for individuals to exercise caution when encountering seemingly lucrative work-from-home opportunities, particularly those that appear too good to be true.
A recent investigation has brought to light the extensive criminal activities of Rushabh Sharma, a notorious figure with a criminal record spanning multiple states and union territories in India. Shockingly, Sharma has faced a staggering 37 charges registered across 855 cases in various regions, including Telangana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Karnataka, among others.
To further complicate matters, the accused had meticulously established a network of 855 criminal Telegram links that spanned across several states, with a notably high concentration in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi, Telangana, and Bihar.

The evidence and information gathered during this investigation will be promptly shared with the relevant states and union territories, enabling them to take appropriate actions as necessary.
The individual at the center of this criminal web is Rushabh Sharma, the son of Rajesh Sharma, and a resident of M.No. 735, Sector 9, Gurgaon, Haryana. At 27 years of age, his arrest represents a significant setback for the orchestrators of this elaborate fraud scheme. This case serves as a stark reminder of the vital role that vigilance and reporting of suspicious activities play in preventing further individuals from becoming victims of such scams.
