Bangladesh mourns nearly 200 dead as protests continue
Protesters against a quota system for government jobs in Bangladesh on Friday resumed mass protests that earlier killed more than 200 people and are holding a nationwide “March for Justice,” ABC News reports.
More than 2,000 protesters gathered in parts of the capital Dhaka, some shouting “Down with the autocrat” and demanding justice for victims, while police circled around them.
Police clashed with dozens of students in Dhaka’s Uttara area, while security personnel fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators. It was the latest round of demonstrations against Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose government has been rocked by student protests that have so far shown no signs of subsiding.
Analysts say what began as a peaceful demonstration by students against the quota system by which government jobs are allocated has turned into a bloody and unusual uprising against Hasina, whose 15-year rule over the country is now being tested as never before.
How it all started
Since violence erupted on July 15, the protests have turned into a major crisis for the 76-year-old Hasina, who in January retained power for a fourth consecutive term in an election boycotted by her main opponents, making the outcome virtually certain even before the votes were counted.
Authorities have switched off the internet and imposed a “shoot-to-kill” curfew to curb violent demonstrations. Schools and universities remain closed.
The deaths of demonstrators have shaken Bangladesh, with videos of violent clashes between security forces and students, with police firing bullets and tear gas shells, appearing on social media. In one incident, a six-year-old girl was shot dead while playing on a rooftop as her father tried to shield her from gunfire.
It all started when students, frustrated by the lack of good jobs, demanded the abolition of the quota system for government jobs, which they believe is discriminatory. Under this system, 30 per cent of the jobs were reserved for relatives of veterans who had fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in 1971. They argued that this benefited supporters of Hasina, whose Awami League party led the independence movement, and demanded that the system be replaced by a merit-based system.
In response, the Supreme Court reduced the quota for veterans to 5 per cent. However, the anger and protests have not subsided. Experts say it reflects a much larger popular rage against the government, economic discontent and ultimately a revolt against Hasina herself, despite the comfort her development programme brings to the people. Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington, said:
“There have been plenty of protests during the Awami League’s regime over the last 15 years, but nothing as large, long, and violent as this one.”
Right place at the right time
This time, he says, there was a perfect storm: an unpopular quota system, a furious government response that turned deadly, contained anger against the state and growing economic stress on most citizens. According to Kugelman, the government’s oft-used tactic of quelling protests with force and some negotiation this time around has only “fanned the protests, not extinguished them.”
The clamour has also highlighted the extent of economic discontent in Bangladesh, once lauded for its successful growth. Like other countries, it suffered after a pandemic and war in Ukraine drove up commodity prices. Today, exports have plummeted, foreign exchange reserves are drying up, as are remittances. The slowing economy has highlighted the lack of quality jobs for young graduates, who are increasingly flocking to government jobs that are more stable and lucrative.
For many students, this was the reason they took to the streets, but the government’s violent response kept them there, even when the quota system was scaled back. Student, teacher and civil society groups say they are now fighting for justice for those killed, while Hasina’s political opponents are demanding her resignation.
Mohammad Rakib Uddin, an 18-year-old college student, was protesting along with hundreds of others when bullets pierced his thigh. Uddin said he was wearing his college uniform and survived after friends took him to hospital. He also added:
“They have brutally and inhumanely attacked us. We are general students — we don’t have weapons, bombs or even a stick in our hands. We were protesting by just holding flags. Many who were with me might have died as they were shot at their waists and heads. By the grace of the Almighty, I am alive.”
However, the government said opposition activists and their armed cohorts joined the students to attack security personnel and government offices.
The turmoil continues
The violence has mostly subsided and normalcy is slowly returning to the country. Curfews have been relaxed, internet has been restored, and banks and offices have opened their doors. But there is still turmoil around Hasina, prompting international outcry from the UN and the US.
Her critics say the past few weeks of violent unrest are the result of her authoritarian nature and lust for control, no matter the cost. For years, her political opponents have accused her of anti-democratic behaviour, with her government jailing thousands of them. International human rights groups accused her of using security forces and courts to suppress dissent and opposition, which the government denied.
Still, Hasina has resorted to accusing the two main opposition parties that backed the students of inciting violence. On Thursday, her government banned one of them, “Jamaat-e-Islami” its student wing and other associated organisations, a move that could escalate tensions again. However, Kugelman does not believe there is an immediate threat to her political survival. He noted:
“But she has incurred soaring reputational costs and faces unprecedented political vulnerability. That could come back to haunt her if there are fresh waves of anti-government protests in the coming weeks or months.”

Why are Western leaders so eager to go to war with nuclear-armed Russia and China? It’s about depopulation, stupid
With A.I. and robots, Israeli historian and WEF mouthpiece asks: ‘What do we need so many humans for?’
Israeli historian and World Economic Forum adviser Yuval Noah Harari is back in the public eye, making the Forum’s case for a depopulated world.
Harari doesn’t come right out and say, let’s kill off half or more of the human beings on the planet. No, he’s much more subtle and cagey in the way he approaches the subject. He backs into it.
Listen carefully to the philosophy of the most dangerous organization on the planet that most Americans have never heard of, the World Economic Forum, and it’s chief philosophical adviser, Yuval Harari.
Elitist WEF mouthpieces like Harari must have a seething hatred for the human race. Perhaps someone should remind Harari that he is also human, and in desperate need of a more human worldview. Instead of technocracy and its depopulation agenda, perhaps Harari should set his eyes on Jesus Christ and what He teaches about the value of human life.
The philosophy you heard espoused in the above video is not some fringe ideology. It is the philosophy of nearly every government in the Western NATO alliance, the same alliance now angling for war with Russia, China, Iran and others. The WEF also has the allegiance of many globalist U.S. governors, from both blue and red states, who have traveled to Switzerland over the years to pander to Klaus Schwab, Harari, and the rest of the Davos death cult. Governors Brian Kemp of Georgia, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and JB Pritzker of Illinois attended the WEF’s 2023 summit earlier this year. Eleven members of Congress also checked in at Davos this year along with Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Chris Coons of Delaware, and Krysten Synema of Arizona. Billionaire business leaders from all industries joined the party.
The most represented countries at the 2023 WEF summit, not including the host Switzerland, were the U.S. (27.2 percent of all attendees) and the U.K. (9.1 percent), followed by Germany (4.3 percent).
Today’s leaders in Western governments and businesses — incestuously enmeshed in public-private partnerships — are obsessed with “net zero carbon emissions” and a worship of technology, especially artificial intelligence and quantum computing (Patrick Wood expounds on this in his latest article here). They are desperately looking for ways to eliminate large swaths of the very humans they have always disdained and now no longer need. Eliminating carbon will cause mass die-offs in the years to come. Plants require carbon. Humans and livestock emit carbon. “Net zero” will bring famine and starvation to the world.
But they can’t wait on climate hysteria to do its job. If they can use the deep-seated hatreds ingrained in various geopolitical hotspots — Russia-Ukraine, China-Taiwan, Serbia-Kosovo, India-Pakistan, and Israel-Gaza — to accomplish their depopulation goals, they will not pass on the opportunity. In each one of these flashpoints, you see almost no effort to negotiate a peaceful resolution. The dogs are out of the doghouse and they are circling the wagons, salivating for human blood.
In the eyes of the Obamas, Bidens, Bushes, Clintons, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, Nikki Haley, Justin Trudeau, Emanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz, Klaus Schwab, King Charles and the rest of the Davos death cult, the more bloody and destructive the coming World War III, the better. They crave it like a vampire in need of a fresh vein. They cannot wait to get the killing started.
Unless these psychopaths are somehow miraculously removed from power, the U.S. and its allies will engage in another world war, and it will likely kill more people than World Wars I and II combined. The technology has advanced so much since the 1940s that these monsters are able to be much more efficient in their eradication of human life. On the other side of this coming calamitous event, they plan to usher in their new digital reset, eliminating all cash, fossil fuels, and freedom.
And it doesn’t have to be so. America faces no threat from abroad. The only threat we face is from inside our borders, where sleeper cells have been allowed to infiltrate by globalist traitors in our government supporting disastrous immigration policies for decades.
Let us pray that our new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will be a positive force for change in Washington. He can do nothing alone, but this is the first good news I’ve had to report out of Washington in years, and, God willing, it can be a first step toward the full exposure and removal of the blood-thirsty globalist neocon war-hawks who currently rule the roost.

'At the outset, it felt like the cinemas of Pakistan were just as excited for Barbenheimer as the local movie-goer community. Local theaters were offering two-for-one deals – cheaper tickets for one of the biggest movie events in recent memory. The fact that they were even acknowledging the existence of the dual release of Oppenheimer and Barbie felt promising: if you could buy tickets, that had to mean you would get to see the films, right?
Cinemagoers weren’t so sure, since the local censor board can be volatile. It’s usually safe to strike anything that isn’t a four-quadrant blockbuster off the calendar, and even local films aren’t safe: last year, Saim Sadiq’s Joyland, a film that won the Jury Prize at Cannes, was banned from screening in the Punjab province. That movie, which touches lightly upon queer issues, has nothing on the full-frontal nudity and controversial maps of Oppenheimer and Barbie, and the prospect of both films being banned felt depressingly conceivable.
It was a pleasant surprise, then, that tickets for Oppenheimer and Barbie went up for sale a full three days ahead of July 21. What’s more, Oppenheimer wasn’t marked with a red 18. That implied they were screening a censored version cleared for exhibition – a guarantee of sorts. As we got closer to release, however, my friends in Punjab got antsy: they’d been told that the tickets they’d purchased for Barbie were at risk of being refunded, since the censor board hadn’t cleared the movie. The anvil dropped on Friday with the announcement that the Punjab Censor Board had banned Greta Gerwig’s latest for featuring “objectionable content.” Early screenings were cut short and audiences were told to leave after sitting through half the film.
The ban, temporary only in name, is limited to the province of Punjab, and it hasn’t stopped people from buying tickets in droves throughout the rest of the country. In Islamabad (where I live), showings for the weekend were completely booked, and we barely got tickets for Sunday. When our group arrived at the theater, it was swamped with people in pink (there was even a group of boys wearing suits with pink ties, Gentleminions-style), and we found that most of our crowd was there for the double feature. The atmosphere was electric.
Our screening began at 4:30 with Barbie, and we tried to catch the objectionable content Gerwig had snuck into the Mattel movie. The film was fun, and completely uncensored – by its end, we were perplexed as to why the censor board had taken issue with a film whose closest aesthetic reference point is Lazy Town.
Oppenheimer was another story. Usually, when the censors need to prune a film, they make brutish cuts that make the omission obvious. The censorship in this case is different. It’s an international hatchet job, and the censors appear to have appreciated the painstaking care Christopher Nolan and editor Jennifer Lame put into the edit. That’s why, instead of upsetting the rhythm, they decided to try their hand at post-production.
This distracts most during the two sex scenes. The censors have zoomed into the background of certain closeup shots, while wide shots have their nudity concealed behind fuzzy black columns. A friend of mine thought the first such column was a wall in the foreground, mistaking it for a strange aesthetic decision on Nolan’s part. To me, the columns look more like the monoliths from 2001: A Space Odyssey (which Barbie does such a great job of spoofing).
The most technically innovative censorship occurs in the scene where Murphy and Pugh are seated opposite one another in the nude. The censored version drapes Pugh in a pitch-black shift dress that looks like it was applied by a gifted artist working in MS Paint. The inclusions obviously rob the scenes of their intimacy, but they at least allow them to remain legible. I was partially grateful for the cuts – obtrusive as they were, they had allowed me to see the film on the big screen (albeit while seated next to a 10-year-old who asked his parents if the bomb had gone off during the silent part of the Trinity Test sequence).
Barbie’s banning feels more disturbing, since our censor board doesn’t usually ban films with messaging as innocuous as Gerwig’s. It sets a dangerous precedent, even though it’s become clear that the censors aren’t nearly as influential as they think they are. Banning a film these days is the same as giving it free publicity for the home video release, and even now hardcore Barbie-heads have been embarking on cross-province road trips for the movie. I’m sure a few of them must’ve been present during the screening I attended on Sunday.
I’m glad for them, since the phenomenon has been a joy, and not just because the films are excellent. Cinema culture in Pakistan has been in the death throes for ages, and it’s been amazing to see people come together in their appreciation of the medium. Case in point: my audience broke into applause as the credits for Barbie rolled. I saw the boys in suits get up, and thought they were going to give the film a standing ovation. But no; they were changing their pink ties to black ones. And nobody batted an eyelid.'
