I have just realized: when I was longing to escape, I was really wanting to abandon.
It feels scary and I’ve shuddered at the honesty of that. Truth is, I just recorded an excerpt from Joan Didion’s “On Self-Respect” essay and the ending line killed me: “One runs away to find oneself, and finds no one at home.”

This detail of Juergen Teller's 2014 portrait of Joan Didion for the Céline Spring Summer 2015 Campaign is from Joan Didion: What She Means' — Back in Stock at last! In Joan Didion: What She Means, the writer and curator Hilton Als creates a mosaic that explores Didion's life and work and the feeling each generates in her admirers, detractors and critics. The book includes more than 50 artists ranging from Brice Marden and Ed Ruscha to Betye Saar, Vija Clemins and many others, with works in all mediums including painting, ephemera, photography, sculpture, video and film. Also included are three previously uncollected texts by Didion: “In Praise of Unhung Wreaths and Love” (1969); a much-excerpted 1975 commencement address at UC Riverside; and “The Year of Hoping for Stage Magic” (2007). Read more via linkinbio. Image credit: @juergenteller_ (German, b. 1964), Joan Didion, Céline Campaign Spring Summer 2015, New York (Uncropped), 2014. On Why I Write(s)
A lot of time of being a young writer goes in understanding the craft or the process of writing. The fun is there is no uniform rule to follow by the end of which we would automatically become great writers. “Greatness” is a myth now unlike the 19th century fascination for the great classics and creating a prescriptive literary canon. Not that the education system has gotten rid of it completely…

✨Review✨ Let Me Tell You What I Mean by Joan Didion . This collection of essays was one of the few nonfiction books I’ve read this year and it was a nice read, perfect for a cup of coffee and a little annotating. Its twelve essays, each of them quite short and easy to get through but some of them I found not particularly interesting and a few were even a little boring for me. There are a couple of them that focus on her experience as a writer and as I highlighted in the post there was one that I found myself re-reading because I found it so helpful and thought provoking. It’s called “Why I Write” and I think everyone who enjoys writing should read it and interact with the text, it was great! On the other hand there was this one essay about Martha Stewart’s career that I was just like “when will this be over?” Haha but that’s just me. Overall very informative and would recommend if you like Joan Didion, or even if you like to write, it can be an interesting read. Hopefully I’ll be reading more of her work on 2023!! . Also, Happy New Year! . #happynewyear #letmetellyouwhatimean #joandidion #bookstagram #books #booksbooksbooks #booksanfcoffee #coffeeandbooks #bookporn #igbooks #ilovereading #bookhaul #bookhoarder #bookaddiction #bookstoread #whattoread #fortheloveofbooks #bookblogging #bookpics #weekendreads #bookrecs #booknerdproblems #bookpictures #bookstagram #amreading #booksbooksbooks #instablog #booknerds #bookphotos #bibliophile #bookrecommendations #bookreview (at Bookstagram) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm1tpWCNcIM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
