HOLLYWOOD WITHOUT MAKE-UP
1963
Tumblr media
Produced by Ken Murray
Music by George Stoll
Written by Royal Foster
Tumblr media
Ken Murray (Himself, Host) is billed as “the man who makes movies of the people who make movies.” He was born Kenneth Abner Doncourt in 1903 to vaudevillian parents. Murray got his start in show business on the stage in 1920s as a stand-up comedian. He performed his comedy act on the vaudeville circuit. He found success as a stage performer after appearing in Earl Carroll's Vanities on Broadway in 1935. In the 1940s, Murray became famous for his Blackouts, a racy, stage variety show at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. The Blackouts played to standing-room-only audiences for 3,844 performances, ending in 1949. Later that year, the show moved to Broadway and closed after six weeks. He made his film debut in the 1929 romantic drama Half Marriage, followed by a role in Leathernecking in 1930. He was also the host of “The Ken Murray Show,” a weekly music and comedy show on CBS Television that ran from 1950 to 1953. The show was the first to win a Freedom Foundation Award. Over the course of his career, Murray filmed Hollywood celebrities using his 16mm home movie camera. He began filming the footage to send back home to his grandparents in lieu of writing letters. His grandmother saved the footage, which Murray later used in compilation films like Hollywood Without Make-Up. He died in 1988 at age 85.
Tumblr media
Features footage of: Eddie Albert, June Allyson, George K. Arthur, Mary Astor, Lew Ayres, Max Baer, Lucille Ball, Richard Barthelmess, Rex Bell, Edgar Bergen, Sally Blane, Humphrey Bogart, John Boles, Pat Boone, Eddie Borden, Hobart Bosworth, Clara Bow, William Boyd, Fanny Brice, Paul Brooks, Joe E. Brown, Johnny Mack Brown, Virginia Bruce, Polly Burson, Rory Calhoun, Leo Carrillo, Charles Chaplin, Lew Cody, William Collier Jr., Russ Columbo, Gary Cooper, Jackie Cooper, Jeanne Crain, Robert Cummings, Linda Darnell, Marion Davies, Joan Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Dolores del Rio, Cecil B. DeMille, Jack Dempsey, Walt Disney, Kirk Douglas, Marie Dressler, Irene Dunne, Josephine Dunn, Stuart Erwin, Ruth Etting, Douglas Fairbanks, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Charles Farrell, Todd Fisher, Errol Flynn, Joan Fontaine, Glenn Ford, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, Reginald Gardiner, Cary Grant, Alan Hale, Oliver Hardy, William Randolph Hearst, Jean Hersholt, William Holden, Bob Hope, Hedda Hopper, Walter Huston, Sam Jaffe, Van Johnson, Buck Jones, Hope Lange, Charles Laughton, Stan Laurel, Gertrude Lawrence, Mervyn LeRoy, Charles Lindbergh, Carole Lombard, William Lundigan, Fred MacMurray, Jayne Mansfield, George Marshall, Herbert Marshall, Chico Marx, Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, Joel McCrea, Victor McLaglen, Adolphe Menjou, Mayo Methot, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Morgan, Wayne Morris, Jean Parker, Louella Parsons, Mary Pickford, Dick Powell, Tyrone Power, George Raft, Gregory Ratoff, Donna Reed, Debbie Reynolds, Buddy Rogers, Charles Ruggles, Albert Schweitzer, George Seaton, Norma Shearer, George Stevens, Lewis Stone, Margaret Sullavan, Robert Taylor, William T. Tilden, George Tobias, Spencer Tracy, Lupe Velez, Jimmy Walker, John Wayne, Johnny Weissmuller, Mae West, Claire Windsor, Robert Woolsey, Jane Wyman, and others.
Tumblr media
The show is also available on DVD from Sprocket Flicks  It has been aired on TV on Turner Classic Movies.
Tumblr media
In 1963, when this documentary was released, Lucille Ball was starting her second season of “The Lucy Show” on CBS TV.
Tumblr media
In June 1950, one year before “I Love Lucy” premiered, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were guests on “The Ken Murray Show” on CBS TV. Tap dancer Bunny Briggs and 'Little Rascal' Darla Hood were also guests.
Tumblr media
In 1966, Lucy and Murray were both guests on “Bob Hope's Leading Ladies.” Murray played a television executive named Harvey Sarnoff.  Lucy played herself.  Sort of.
Tumblr media
Lucy returned to Sun Valley to film an episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour,” using the same locations scene in this documentary.
Tumblr media
Twenty minutes into the documentary, the location turns to Sun Valley, Idaho, where Hollywood stars went for winter sports. June Allyson, Errol Flynn, Martha O'Driscoll, Johnny Weissmuller, Wayne Morris, and Reggie Gardiner have a snowball fight while making a snowman.
Tumblr media
Lounging at the Lodge are Rory Calhoun (center) and Lucille Ball. Sun Valley was one of the Arnaz's favorite vacation spots, accessible by train from Hollywood. Desilu would film “Lucy Goes To Sun Valley” (1958) there. Lucy's good friend Ann Sothern also loved Sun Valley, and is buried nearby.
Tumblr media
Murray says that this is not the only home movies of Lucille Ball that he has. First is a quick clip of Lucy at Chatsworth Ranch with one of her cherished dogs. Lucy and Desi had three dogs at the time.
Tumblr media
This leads to footage of Lucille Ball filming Fancy Pants in 1950 with director George Marshall and co-star Bob Hope. Murray also mentions that Lucy has done quite a few pictures with Hope, including Critic's Choice, which was released in 1963, the same year as this documentary. In 1969, when Lucy wanted to film episodes of “Here's Lucy” on location, including on the Colorado River, she hired Marshall, remembering his expertise with location filming in rough terrain.
Tumblr media
Ball also poses with Marshall and her Fancy Pants stunt double, Polly Burson, although Murray does not specifically mention her name.
Tumblr media
Ball is shown doing a stunt where she falls onto a break-away table, not once...
Tumblr media
 not twice...
Tumblr media
but three times!
Murray: “Someone once said that Lucille Ball stands alone as the greatest comedienne of our time.  That goes for sitting down, too!”
Tumblr media
Lucy Without Make-Up: Literally!
Tumblr media
A movie star, Lucille Ball was rarely scene without full make-up, but when a scene demanded she take a blast of water to the face, she removed her false eyelashes, as she did here in “Never Do Business With Friends” (ILL S2;E31) in 1953.

LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
Here we go then last month of the Summer Leagues.  Everything to play for, the Pilots to win their league and in the VCL, La Marina not to get relegated.   Best of luck to both. We did alright in the VCL getting six points off a very strong San Luis Falcons side remembering they won the league last year. Three wins each but the Falcons got the overall shots for the extra two points.  Our winners were in the Ladies Singles with Janet Parsons winning 21-6, in the rinks Dave O’Sullivan, Garth Slater, Tom Spencer and Dave Hadaway had a 18-11 win and very excitingly Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith, Jean Perchard and Terry Perchard won on the very last end by three.
Looking at the score sheet it could have been so easily 12-2 to the Pilots as two of our rinks only lost by one shot.  Instead we beat Monte Mar Torre 8-6 away from home. So well done to all to keep us up towards the top. Jean Tregoing, Rob and Margaret Finlayson won21-16 with Garth Slater, Carol Smith and Dave Taylor getting two more points winning 21 -14.  While Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith and Tom Spencer came up trumps with a 17-14 win.
Usually at this time of the year folk are thinking about moving clubs or people are about to move out here for a better life in Spain.  If you are one of those people why not come and join us at La Marina, friendly, happy club with a good social life out of bowls.  Great for new bowlers as we provide coaching.   If you are interested give our Captain Steve Hindle a call on 966184360.
VISTABELLA BOWLS REPORT
With Lynne Bishop.
we have to congratulate Martin Foulcer who was defending his title in the Spanish Nationals Men’s Singles, he did exceptionally well and reached the semi-final only to be defeated by Brian Robertson (Mazarron) who went on to win the 2017 title.
Back to league bowls this week, kicking off with a VCL derby between our Saxons and the Vikings the Saxons being the home team. First result to come in was the Ladies Singles with Lin Watkins (S) 21-14 (V) Sandra Burrows. Men’s Singles Ian Kenyon (S) 13-21 (V) Martin Foulcer. Pairs, Del Gunning & Peter Whitehall (S) 25-12 (V) Pauline & Pat Rafferty. Triples, Beryl Regan, Brian Pointon &  Mike Regan (S) 16-16 (V) Neil Burrows, Stuart Allman & Brian Dunn. Rinks, Mike Irwin, Sheila Whitehall, Jeff Neve & Barry Norris (S) 10-23 (V) Jenny Chaplin, Andy Leggatt, Dave Chaplin & Eric Bishop. Rinks, Ron Smith, Charlie Watkins, Les Barber & Dave Jenkins (S) 15-16 (V) Frank Barclay, Barbara Brown, Bert Ewart & Arthur Brown.
The shots were very close, Saxons 100 (5) – 102 (9) Vikings.
SAL League. The Fairways at home v San Luis Wellingtons, they had three teams taking full points and a drawn game, E Blythe, C Watkins & B Pain 31-11. M Foulcer, B Brown & M Furness 19-8. L Bishop, J Bowman & I Kenyon 21-12 and G Paylor, A Brown & K Cuthbert 14-14. Shots, VB 114(9) – 85(5) SL.
The Greeners v Quesada Lancasters had a good away result, winning on four rinks but just missed out on the long game! S Cox, S Whitehall & L Barber 21-6. M Irwin, S Norris & P Rafferty 25-14. R Smith B Pointon & B Corbishly 25-15. D Gunning, D Chaplin & D Jenkins 20-18. Shots, VB 105(8) – 109(6) Q.

3rd Annual Old Timers Reunion
Tumblr media

Record photo by HEATHER DEAN
By HEATHER DEAN
Record Reporter
Wilkesboro Dragway (formerly known as North Wilkesboro Drag Strip) opened in 1955 and is still going strong after 62 years.  Track owners Pat and Phil Halbedel once again opened the gates free to the public for the 3rd Annual Quick Times Racing News Old Timer’s Reunion.  Becky White, editor of the Quick Times Racing News hosted the reunion.  Bobby Houston's Trucking Company in Hildebran gave out free ice cream for the event. Drag Racers who raced at Wilkesboro Dragway came from all over to reminisce. There were many old photos and memorabilia displays. White started the Old Timers Reunion so friends, many who have dropped out of racing but still like to show their cars, could get together, and share stories “just like old times.”
Among those in attendance were the likes of Harold Denton Jean and Taylor Brown, Jeff Rudisill, Richard Greer, Roger Chipman, Tyrone Graham, Jose Wilson, members of the Wilkes County Cruisers, and members of the Ellis family who built the Dragway.
The memorabilia was fascinating, the camaraderie among those that paved the way for the racing circuit as it now stands was heartwarming, and boy…if you thought it got deep listening to fisherman’s tales, just sit and listen to the men and women of racing share their memories. Except they have the trophies to prove it…
Harold Denton hails from Middlesex, and is mild mannered a Pro Stock Legend. He was around when the Wilkes track was built and recalled racing here from the very beginning. “It’s changed a bit over the years,” he said “but everything changes- and most of the time for the better” he said with a nod to the younger racers. As we finished up our conversation and he went to look at the other cars on display, I was made aware of the legend I had just been speaking to. Jeff Rudisill, IHRA Nostalgia Pro Stock driver and member of the 490 Outlaw’s said “I was 10 years old in 1978, standing on a bank, watching Denton race. I didn’t know how, but I knew I wanted to do what he did. He really set the standard for racing, and that was 40 years ago. He’s what got me into racing, He was first to run the 6’s, and he’s just one of the nicest people on earth.”
Rudisill drives the Bill Orndorff car which was on display along side the IHRA World Champion Frank Teague tribute car as part of the Southeastern Outlaw Nostalgia Pro Stock display.
Taylor “Mousie” and Jean Brown of Moravian Falls (front page) had a table full of memorabilia from the good ol’ days of racing. Newspaper clippings, photos and trophies for both Joan and Taylor, both who have been inducted into the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame. In fact, Joan was Miss America of Drag racing in 1973 & Taylor won the first race ever held at the Wilkesboro Dragway.
The track however, was not quiet on this beautiful Sunday. Several brought heir vehicles to the line, including Rex Brown of Moravian Falls with his 1941 “Midnight Runner” Chevrolet Sedan, and “Mr. Magoo” who drives a bright red roadster.
If you didn’t make it out on Sunday, you really missed quite a treat, and a chance to meet some of the people that made Wilkes County, as well as world history. But you will have another chance on May 20th.  The 2nd Annual Don Carlton Memorial and the U.S. Nationals of Nostalgia Pro Stock will be held at The Wilkesboro Dragway. You’ll have another chance to meet Former Pro Stock Drivers, including Harold Denton. Jerry Eckman, Bill Orndorff, Stuart McDade, Lou Tabilio, Morris Johnson Jr., Bruce Walker and many more.  Gates open at 8:30. Kids 12 and under are free.
This coming Saturday the Wilkesboro Dragway will be hosting the WSC 490 Outlaws, and holding point’s race #5. For more information call 336-973-RACE, or go to www.wilkesborodragway.com. The Wilkesboro Dragway is located at 774  Dragway Road, Wilkesboro NC 28659.
