I’m not quite inspired to put together a Mostly Mezzo Mondays list this week, but if I did, it might point to video livestreams of Nozze from Covent Garden (Gerhaher, Keenlyside, Joélle Harvey) and Mahagonny from Aix (La Mattila) and a radio broadcast of AnnaCat doing La mort de Cléopâtre. Fleming fans can hear her doing a bit of this and a bit of that ranging from Tchaikovsky to a Rodgers & Hammerstein chestnut.

Since we’re spending this week on a stroll down memory lane (M is for Mozart and also for Memories, right?), I’ll admit that a rich source of memories for me when it comes to Mozart call back to my senior year in college, when I played the Countess in our department’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro. Mozart’s ensemble writing in opera is spectacular, to say the least, but while people talk a lot about the second act and fourth act finales, one of my favorite, less discussed pieces is this second act Terzetto, “Susanna, or via, sortite,” a celebration of anxiety as the Countess desperately tries to keep her jerk husband from discovering Cherubino in the closet, and Susanna tries to figure out what the heck to do about it all. Sung gloriously here by Simon Keenlyside, Julia Kleiter, and Joélle Harvey at the Royal Opera House, this trio was one of my favorite pieces to learn and sing back in the day, and it’s still probably my favorite moment in the opera. Enjoy! - Melinda Beasi

Perhaps not every member of the New York Philharmonicis thrilled at the annual prospect of Handel’s “Messiah,” and you can partly understand why. As often as not these days, a sharply reduced…

Joélle Harvey sings “V’adoro pupille” from Handel’s Giulio Cesare I heard Joelle Harvey sing the soprano part in Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor.  She has a lovely voice.

Mostly Mezzo Mondays: Röschmann & Hampson, DiDonato, and Harvey
Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall. My interests: baroque vocal music, art song recitals, and a list of favorite singers.
Dorothea Röschmann and Thomas Hampson sing songs from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn with the Turku Philharmonic. Live broadcast Thursday, August 8 on YLE Radio 1.
Joyce DiDonato sings Berlioz’ Les nuits d’été with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. Live broadcast Sunday, August 11 on BBC Radio 3.
Joélle Harvey sings Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Deferred broadcast Sunday, August 11 on KPBS. NOTE: although this broadcast begins at 8:00 p.m. on August 11 in the Pacific time zone, it shows up in the WCH schedule, which uses GMT for all times, very early in the morning of August 12.

Handel’s Messiah
NEW YORK PHLHARMONIC
HANDEL’S MESSIAH
Presented by Gary W. Parr
 Andrew Manze, Conductor
Joelle Harvey, Soprano
Jennifer Johnson Cano, Mezzo-Soprano
Ben Bliss, Tenor
Tyler Duncan, Bass-Baritone
Westminster Symphonic Choir
Joe Miller, Director
Tumblr media
The Westminster Symphonic Choir with the New York Philharmonic under Andrew Manze.
It’s that time of year again for performances of Handel’s Messiah.  The New York Philharmonic delivered several last week. There were many highs and some surprising lows.
The overture was exceedingly slow to the point of sounding like it was dragging.  Of the soloists, soprano Joélle Harvey had luscious plummy tones as did the mezzo-soprano, Jennifer Johnson Cano, though her command was less accurate.  Tenor Ben Bliss was powerful but too often drifted into a strident tone; bass Andrew Foster-Williams had good tones but seemed to lack the power needed for a house the size of David Geffen Hall.
The Westminster Symphonic Choir was not consistently balanced with the bass-baritones seeming to lack sufficient force to respond to the other sections.
One of the thrills of any Messiah performance is that special trumpet solo – here performed beautifully by Christopher Martin.
The Messiah is a favorite with audiences and certainly launches the Christmas spirit.

Pittsburgh Opera Mozart 'The Marriage of Figaro' Review
Pittsburgh Opera Mozart ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ Review
Bravo! Thank you, Pittsburgh Opera for making going to the movie theater obsolete for me. Conveniently, located in downtown Pittsburgh. I was able to grab something to eat before going in to enjoy their performance. Once inside I picked up my tickets and was greeted by Dr. Marilyn Egan Pittsburgh Opera’s Director of Education, who informative me that the Pittsburgh Opera lobby was inspired…
