To this day, these churches still draw from the spiritual legacies of Christian missions and receive funding from off-reservation congregations under that definition. Global Ministries of the United Methodist church spent over $11m in 2022 for missionary services. Wels spent $661,018 just for the Apache missions and over $23.5m for all missions, as laid out in its most recent report, from 2023. Wels first came to Arizona in 1892, five years after the Dawes Act. When it was clear that exterminating the Apache people would not be possible, the federal government engaged Christian denominations working with the military to force the assimilation of the Indigenous people. RH Pratt, the superintendent of the first “industrial” boarding school under this policy, coined the term that embodied the philosophy behind these institutions: “Kill the Indian in him, and save the man.” pews and stained glass Federal boarding school policy allowed the military to forcibly remove Apache children from their families and send them to industrial schools in an attempt to militarize and alter their identities. They were forbidden to practice their religion or speak their language, and reports of physical and sexual abuse were common. Many children never returned home. If an Indigenous child was found outside during school hours, Indigenous police were appointed to snatch the child and deliver them to a school under the US military’s jurisdiction. If a parent sought to hide their child, they could be imprisoned or cut off from food and other necessary daily supplies. Apache children were kidnapped and taken as far as Pennsylvania, where they were forced to fully assimilate into Anglo-Christian society. Their clothes were burned, their language forgotten. Many children died of disease, neglect or abuse. And while the number of deaths is not yet known, it is believed that Apache children comprise a quarter of the graves at Carlisle Indian Industrial school. To think that 1800s attitudes towards Apache children have changed would be a mistake. Outside of the Wels mission, volunteers of other denominations drive around in colorful buses and still pick children up throughout the reservation, whether on the side of the road or other public areas. They take them to play games and learn about their version of Jesus and then drop the kids off again where they found them hours before. Parents are not always told or asked permission.

Part 577

McCoy

Gratitude towards Dr. Hudson filled McCoy’s chest as the door closed behind her. Her words had lifted Scotty more in a few minutes than McCoy could have done with the rest of the day. And himself. Scotty’s touch had soothed McCoy’s anger, but Dr. Hudson had reminded them what was important. Their future.

McCoy leaned in against Scotty as they sat. Cold rain pounded on the window outside. A walk to the lake was out of the question and the library would be too full of other students studying between classes.

“What do you want to do with a free day darlin’?” McCoy asked.

Scotty lifted his head next to him. McCoy heard a soft sigh escape his fiancé. Instead of answering Scotty pushed forward and kissed him. McCoy blinked in surprise but quickly kissed him back.

“I want to forget,” Scotty whispered, breathless, a few moments later.

“Ok,” McCoy said, catching his own breath. He stood and crossed the room to lock the door. “We can start with that and figure out the rest after.” He unbuttoned his shirt enough to pull it off and walked back to the bed.

He reached down to undo Scotty’s shirt, then pushed him backwards. His hands ran up his fiancé’s torso as he sat down, then stretched out on top of him, mouths meeting again.

It wasn’t until dinner that they left their room. After a fast start, they had taken their time, taking care of each other. Long slow kisses and movements had mixed with fast frenzied ones, until both were finished and worn out.

McCoy was unsure which had dozed off first after, but he was woken again by soft touches brushing his hair from his forehead. They had lain together for a long time, just talking quietly, making plans. Finally McCoy had grabbed their book and they nearly dozed again while he read.

A knock on the door startled them.

“Yes?” McCoy called tentatively.

“It’s nearly dinner, your highness,” their guard called. “And you did skip lunch.”

In reply McCoy’s stomach grumbled and he smothered a laugh that started from Scotty.

“We’ll be there soon,” he called back to the guard.

“How do you feel?” he asked Scotty as he pushed back the covers.

“Better,” Scotty said softly. His eyes still held his worries. “Ye?”

McCoy nodded. “Calmer.” McCoy picked up their shirts from the floor and handed Scotty his.

“Who do ye think went after us?” Scotty asked, finishing with his shirt and standing up to find his pants.

McCoy shrugged. “Father maybe? The demands were sent to him. Jim? He organized the rescue. We could ask. I’m sure Pike will tell us.”

Scotty nodded in acknowledgement as he pulled on his shoes. “Yer hair is all over,” he said as he looked at McCoy with a grin.

“I need a trim,” McCoy replied as he ran a hand through his hair. He stepped into the bathroom and gave it a quick comb. “Next week when we’re home.”

The dining hall was subdued when they entered. Exams had started and many students were tired from studying. Robbie spotted them first and crossed to Scotty quickly. A hug and a flurry of Gaelic followed.

“And ye Leonard? Are ye alright?” Robbie asked.

“Yeah. Thanks Robbie.”

“I got called in this afternoon,” Jim said as they sat down. “You guys went first I guess?”

“Aye.”

“The defense lawyer is a real asshole,” Jim hissed out. He glanced up the table, but Archer hadn’t arrived yet. “He tried to pick apart and twist everything I said.”

“He wasn’t kind to us either,” McCoy agreed.

Part 578

Scotty

The next few days more of their friends gave their testimonies. Robbie seemed to handle it quite well, but that was mainly, because it wasn't Khan's case being discussed yet. Scotty was really scared about the upcoming trial, however, he declared it a problem of the future and tried to focus on their current situation.

It was Friday morning and he had to write his last exam. Jim and Robbie were in the same class as he was. The two were sitting next to each other, talking quietly and Scotty just watched them.

He was really glad that his brother and his friend still got on quite well after the panic attack. Jim had apologized for his mistake and Robbie had easily forgiven him.

A blink on his finger caught Scotty's attention and he glanced down to look at his ring. A soft smile formed on his lips. Leonard was sending him good luck for the exam.

Scotty touched his ring and not too long after that the door opened and their teacher stepped into the room.

The last exam began!

"Hey there, leannan. How did it go?"

Leonard greeted him with a hug and a kiss and they started walking to the dining hall, hand in hand.

Scotty shrugged.

"I think it went alright. Not my best exam, but not my worst either," he retorted and his fiancé grinned at him.

"Let me guess... your worst was... Federation History?"

Scotty just rolled his eyes.

"Oi! Not everyone can be a genius like ye are in that field!"

Leonard laughed and squeezed his hand.

"Says the student who excels in every other subject."

Scotty's grin turned sly as he shrugged his shoulders once again.

"Well, gotta have to have one weakness, don't I?"

At hearing that, Leonard leaned over and pressed a kiss to Scotty's cheek.

"Oh? I thought that I am your one weakness."

Scotty was about to kiss his love back, when they heard a voice behind them.

"Geez, what's up with the two of ye? Get a room!"

The couple stopped and laughed as they turned around to see Robbie. He was alone. Well... a bodyguard was with him, of course, but Jim was nowhere to be seen.

"Hey Robbie, how was your exam?" Leonard greeted the younger Scott and he smiled.

"I think I did good. Dr. Boyce helped me quite well with the topic. I have to thank him again, once we get back to Georgiares."

They were about to enter the dining hall, when they were intercepted by a familiar face.

Pike.

The headmaster was already waiting for them. There was a smile on his face.

"Hello boys. I hope your exams went well?"

Leonard's last exam had been the afternoon before so Pike knew that they were all done with work.

The three of them nodded.

"Yes, Mr. Pike. What can we do for you?" Leonard asked and the man's smile grew wider.

"I am here to inform you that I just got a call that Sural and all the other Romulans were charged guilty this morning."

Scotty didn't know what to say. It felt like a huge stone fell from his heart. It was over! That part of their past was really over!

"That's great, sir!" Robbie exclaimed and wrapped one arm around each of his companions' shoulders.

"A-aye, thank ye, sir," Scotty stammered and Pike placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Don't thank me, Montgomery. You all are the ones to take credit for it."

The headmaster was right. Thanks to them and their testimonies Sural and the others had been charged guilty. Thanks to them they'd pay for what they had done.

"What will happen to Sural and the others, if I may ask?" Leonard said and Pike told them that they'd be send to a penal colony for quite a long time.

"Well then... I see you at the winter celebration this afternoon."

They said their goodbyes and then entered the dining hall. Lunch would taste better than ever after these news!

Iron Man

Door het succes van de films uit het Marvel Cinematic Universe is het vandaag de dag nauwelijks denkbaar, maar Iron Man is lange tijd slechts een B-figuur geweest in de comicwereld. Dat is te merken aan het geringe aantal uitgaven van de man van staal in het Nederlands…

Vroege start

Nochtans was Tony Stark er wel vroeg bij in de Lage Landen. Al in 1969 maakt hij zijn opwachting in de legendarische HIP Classics reeks. Daarin wist hij slechts drie deeltjes te vullen, maar toch kreeg hij van uitgeverij Classics de kans met een eigen serie. Voor die eigen series telden ze het aantal nummers dat helden in HIP hadden gekregen en van daar nummerden ze dan verder. Zo is het eerste ‘eigen’ nummer van ‘Ijzerman’ nummer 4 uit 1971. Helaas voor Tony Stark bleef het daar ook bij. 

Staalman

Pas in 1983 zouden we Iron Man terugzien onder eigen naam. In de reeksen Marvel Special en Marvel Superhelden probeerde uitgeverij Juniorpress allerlei minder bekende helden uit. Zo kregen ze een beeld van welke personages populair zijn bij het publiek en dus mogelijk een eigen serie verdienen. Ook Iron Man kreeg er zijn kans. Zijn vertaling was intussen trouwens aangepast van Ijzerman naar Staalman.

Helaas bleken deze geen groot succes en zouden we Iron Man buiten enkele (gast-)optredens in andere reeksen zoals de Vergelders niet snel terugzien bij Juniorpress. Wel een bijzondere vermelding waard voor die gastoptredens is Spiderman Extra 17 uit 1987. Daarin krijgen we voor het eerst 'de Iron Man uit de toekomst' te zien.

Heroes Reborn

In 1997 kreeg Iron Man nog eens een eigen uitgave in Marvel Superhelden. Na de ‘Onslaught’ saga hadden een aantal klassieke Marvel-titels onder de noemer ‘Heroes Reborn’ een herstart gekregen met aan het roer grote namen uit de comicwereld. Zo schreef Jim Lee mee aan deze nieuwe Iron Man reeks. Het tekenwerk was helaas niet van zijn hand, wel van Whilce Portacio.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

In 2008 was Juniorpress de rechten op Marvel intussen verloren aan Z-Press. Die laatste zette de lopende Spiderman en X-Mannen (nu wel als X-Men) titels verder, maar probeerde daarnaast enkele beperkte nieuwe zaken. 

Eén van die nieuwigheden was de Iron Man Special op magazineformaat. Geen onlogische keuze, want de film Iron Man met Robert Downey Jr liep intussen in de bioscoop. In het magazine werd naast enkele strips dan ook hard ingespeeld op het succes van de film. 

Standaard

Zoals je merkt, moest Iron Man het tot nu toe vooral hebben van losse uitgaven en probeersels in overkoepelende titels. Daar zou in 2015 verandering in komen. Standaard Uitgeverij (bekend van Suske & Wiske) had de rechten op Marvel Comics bemachtigd en lanceerde een groot superhelden offensief. Er werden een heleboel nieuwe lopende series gestart met materiaal uit de grote Marvel Now reboot van de Amerikaanse uitgever. Ook Iron Man was dit keer bij de gelukkigen met een eigen titel. De run van schrijver Kieron Gillen en tekenaar Greg Land werd mooi uitgegeven in 9 delen.

In de supermarkt

De meest recente ‘eigen’ Iron Man titel komt uit 2021. Supermarktketen Carrefour lanceerde dat jaar in samenwerking met uitgever Panini een reeks bundels rond verschillende Marvel-helden. Daarin stonden verschillende verhalen uit de jaren 2000. Ook Iron Man kreeg een deeltje op zijn naam, met daarin oa. het geweldige ‘Extremis’ door Warren Ellis (!) en Adi Granov. Een aanrader! 🙌

Gastoptredens

Iron Man moet het dus stellen met een zeer beperkt aantal eigen titels, maar zoals gezegd maakte hij wél zeer regelmatig zijn opwachting in andere titels. Daarin is de rol van Tony Stark soms ook best groot. Denk maar aan Civil War, waar hij samen met Captain America de centrale figuur is.

Berghem - Dat karttalent Xavi Radecke uitermate snel is in het NK viertakt van Chrono Karting bewees hij vorige maand al met een klinkende zege in Kerpen. Inmiddels heeft de elfjarige snelheidsduivel uit Bergen op Zoom ook de vierde ronde van de titelstrijd gewonnen. Op het circuit van Berghem zegevierde hij zeer overtuigend in alle races in de Parolin Rocky F1-klasse! Xavi doet het bepaald niet rustig aan, kunnen we wel stellen. In Kerpen pakte de snelle Brabander zijn eerste NK-zege ooit en in Berghem pakte hij prompt zijn tweede. Het verbaast dan ook niet dat hij het hele weekend snel was. Na de uitstekend verlopen vrije trainingen gaf de kwalificatie hem de eerste echt waardevolle bevestiging dat hij opnieuw snel genoeg was voor een podiumplaats. “We reden strakke lijnen en met de afstelling zaten we perfect. We wilden een rondetijd rijden van onder de minuut en dat is gelukt. We waren er heel blij mee. Ik miste de pole op een honderdste.” Als de nummer twee in de kwalificatie moest de leerling van de Roncalli Scholengemeenschao aan de buitenkant starten in race één. Xavi: “Ik had een heel mooie start en ik kon daarna met iemand anders wegrijden. Opeens kwam de rest van het veld dichterbij. Drie rondes moesten we hopen dat we opnieuw konden wegrijden. Dat lukte en we sloegen een gat van vier seconden. In de laatste ronden gingen we battelen. Aan het einde van bocht vier was er een gaatje en daar dook ik in. Ik moest daardoor over een hoge kerb en pakte daarna de binnenbocht voor de chicane. De rest van de ronde heb ik verdedigd en uiteindelijk de race gewonnen.” Xavi Radecke wint NK karting in Berghem - Foto: Bas Kaligis - RaceXpress.nl Ook in race twee had Xavi een uitstekende start “Ik moest overleven met Jim (Daanen, red.) en Roran (van Campen, red.). We hebben treintje kunnen rijden en zo kunnen wegrijden van de concurrentie. Roran haalde mij een keer in, Jim volgde en zij zaten naast elkaar op het rechte stuk. Ik pakte zijn slipstream en duwde hem op waardoor we voor Jim terechtkwamen. Maar we konden niet echt los komen. In de laatste ronde gingen we battelen en ben ik teruggekruist in bocht vier. Roran deed toen een divenomb in de voorlaatste bocht, schoot door en liet een gaatje voor me. Zo reden we na de eerste bocht naast elkaar. Ik reed net voor hem en heb de race kunnen winnen.” In race drie had Xavi opnieuw een geweldige start, samen met Roran. “Ik gaf een seintje dat het slim zou zijn om samen te werken om te kunnen wegrijden van de rest. Finn Jonkman haakte aan, maar kon geen move inzetten. Roran maakte op een gegeven moment een foutje en Finn kon met mij wegrijden. Ik verdedigde een beetje in de laatste ronde maar ik hoefde me ook weer niet echt zorgen te maken. Zo won ik ook race drie!” Clean sweep Een zogeheten clean sweep dus, voor Xavi. Hij kon het maar amper geloven. “Bij de eerste zege was ik al superblij. Ook bij de tweede overwinning was ik heel blij. Ik schreeuwde nog harder dan na de eerste race. En na de derde race ging ik helemaal uit mijn dak: drie uit drie!” Gouden nummer 1 op volgende NK-ronde Door zijn tweede NK-zege op rij mag Xavi tijdens de volgende NK-ronde rijden met de gouden nummer één. “Dat is een geweldig gevoel. Van begin af aan wilde ik er al mee rijden en dat is nu gelukt!” Xavi’s volgende race is de vijfde ronde van het NK. Die wordt gehouden op het circuit van Assen, na de zomervakantie. Zelfvertrouwen heeft hij alvast genoeg. “Vorig jaar ging het niet heel soepel maar ik denk dat het nu wel beter zal gaan!” Xavi bedankt zijn coach Calvin de Groot, zijn vader en moeder, zijn sponsors, opa’s en oma’s en zijn teammaatje Ashneel voor de goede samenwerking. PALU: Hervormingen in het onderwijs moeten radicaal anders

Afgelopen woensdag heeft in het centrum van de PALU een discussie over de toekomst van het onderwijs plaatsgevonden. Het Beleidsforum Volkseducatie heeft een paneldiscussie georganiseerd, waar duidelijk is geworden dat de hervormingen die in de afgelopen twee decennia zijn doorgevoerd niet meer dan onafgemaakte pogingen zijn geweest. Deze kennelijk goedbedoelde pogingen hebben gefaald vanwege het vertrekpunt van beleidsmakers met “partij politieke” motieven voorop, wat heeft gemaakt dat de onderwijssector momenteel in een grote chaos is terechtgekomen. Verward en gedemotiveerd De inleider Robert Peneux gaf een goed beeld van meerdere verkeerde zienswijzen op basis waarvan hervormingen zijn doorgevoerd. Met heel veel voorbeelden maakte hij duidelijk dat van alles misgaat in het onderwijs, omdat beleidsmakers ervan uitgaan dat zij alleen verantwoordelijk zijn om hervormingen in ons onderwijs door te voeren. Ook blijven deze hervormingen stranden, omdat alleen wijzigingen in de inhoud en lesmethoden worden doorgevoerd, zonder te beseffen dat ook de opleidingen van leraren mee moeten veranderen. Al deze pogingen tot hervorming hebben er toe geleid dat vandaag de dag niet alleen onderwijzers, maar ook leerlingen en ouders van leerlingen verward en daardoor gedemotiveerd zijn over de richting waarin onze jongeren opgevoed moeten worden. Veel deskundigheid In de paneldiscussie met de deskundigen Manuella Veldkamp en Muriel Hoepel, werd duidelijk dat er erg veel deskundigheid op het ministerie aanwezig is, maar dat het te weinig wordt ingezet in het regeerbeleid. Hoepel benadrukte dat er wel enige vooruitgang is geboekt in de onderwijssector waaronder studie loopbaanbegeleiding en het STEM-onderwijs. "De modernisering van ons onderwijs is mogelijk", gaf Veldkamp aan. Maar al gauw werd duidelijk dat het onderwijs niet is afgestemd op middellang en lange termijn economische doelen, omdat die gewoonweg niet worden ingebracht door de politiek. Als de offshore olieproductie belangrijk zal worden in de komende jaren, hadden allang hervormingen in het onderwijs doorgevoerd moeten worden om te kunnen voldoen aan de toekomstige vraag naar deskundige jongeren voor deze sector. PALU-onderwijshervormingen PALU-voorzitter Jim Hok sloot de drukbezochte paneldiscussie af door de aanwezigen te garanderen dat met de PALU in het bestuur van ons land, de nodige onderwijshervormingen wel degelijk doorgevoerd zullen worden met grote betrokkenheid van de leerkrachten en Surinaamse onderwijsdeskundigen. "Alleen op die manier kunnen wij de opdracht vervullen die het Surinaams volk en haar leiders op zich hebben genomen bij de onafhankelijkheid van Suriname in 1975, namelijk om ons land opnieuw in te richten naar onze eigen belangen en behoeften. Onderwijshervormingen die de toekomst van ons land bepalen, kunnen niet afhangen van toevallige deskundigen uit het buitenland die met ideeën komen die vaak niet passen in de Surinaamse omstandigheden. We zullen met ons allen, samen, een visie moeten formuleren waar we ook met ons onderwijs willen zijn op lang termijn.
