Wood Engraving Wednesday
JIM HORTON
Here is a progression of engravings from Ann Arbor, Michigan, wood engraver and letterpress printer Jim Horton's edition of Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. These engravings illustrate each stanza of Carroll's nonsense poem. This little book was printed on Wausau Royal fiber paper with handset Virile Open and Tell Text No. 5, and Horton's original wood engravings at his Ann Arbor studio, End-Gravure Graphics, in 1998. Horton is the founder of the Wood Engravers' Network. Our copy of Jabberwocky another donation from the estate of our late friend Dennis Bayuzick.

Star Trek food replicator that for maximum efficiency also makes all dishware and utensils edible so mess hall scenes occasionally feature Spock casually picking up and eating his plate
McCoy having a cup of coffee and then stuffing the cup in his mouth
Kirk absently chewing on a fork and then realizing with annoyance that he's not finished using it so he needs to replicate another one

Tired: Dr. Phineas Horton was (((a money-grubbing amoral scientist))) who didn't care about Jim Hammond at all and only saw him and his other creations as a cash-grab Wired: Dr. Phineas Horton was a complicated Jewish scientist struggling to make his mark in a field that discriminated against him, when he created an actual living breathing creature he (understandibly) did not know how to react but he tried his best to try and at least teach Jim how to be a functioning member of society, and when that failed, he still!! tried to keep Jim out of the wrong hands. He didn't see Jim fully as a son not because he was a horrible person but because he was understanding Jim out of the cultural lens of a Golem, not Pinocchio, because Horton was a Jew, not a Christian puppetmaker. He never set out to create a son, so how can you expect him to treat Jim as one? He set out to create a scientific breakthrough in the 1930s.......and when his genius wasn't recognized by the greater society because he was a Jew in the 1930s, he had to turn to hawking his very incredible science like it was a sideshow act. This doesn't make him "money-grubbing".
You can't call him a terrible person for not being the father figure Jim yearned for because he never set out to create a son, he set out to create a Golem. Jim being fully sentient was an accident. You don't have to love Dr. Horton, he is a complicated character for a reason, in the same way Dr. Frankenstein is, but don't think I don't see the antisemitic language you gleefully use about him.

"Jim Hammond is a robo--"
WRONG! Jim Hammond is a human being created in a lab in the 1930s by a Kang protoge.
Like Horton didn't make a cool robot.
HE FUCKING CREATED A CELL STRUCTURE THAT COULD DIFFERENTIATE ITSELF TO BECOME VARIOUS PARTS OF THE HUMAN ANATOMY.
Jim's skin? Horton cells.
Jim's organs? Horton cells.
Jim's blood? Horton cells.
Hell, even the man's semen is Horton cells which, when in contact with a human egg, will functionally reproduce to make a humanoid infant (James Robinson, you'll always be famous to me for that).
Like Horton was a money grubbing piece of shit who didn't care for any of the boys he created beyond the profit of it, but he was fucking correct that he deserved a fucking Nobel Peace Prize because do you understand the power of how one invention he manipulated into human life?!
AND IT'S ETERNAL AND CATCHES FIRE? Bro unlocked a cellular perpetual motion machine to boot. Fucking wow.

Wake Pinocchio! Skip and run! Good Geppetto needs a son! Pinocchio, my artificial man. Fruit of my labors. I made you. You are mine. No one else's. Yet I don't know what to do with you. How to fix you.

* * * *
"A man that is born falls into a dream like a man who falls into the sea. If he tries to climb out into the air as inexperienced people endeavor to do, he drowns...The way is to the destructive element submit yourself, and with the exertions of your hands and feet in the water make the deep, deep sea keep you up...In the destructive element immerse."
~ Joseph Conrad, 'Lord Jim'

honestly the idea of vision and jim getting together to curb stomp tyrants is such an enjoyable mental image... showing your younger sibling the ropes / old tricks, keeping your older sibling busy with something to do.... society IF>>>>>
Yes!! I wish Vision and Jim got to interact more, because there’s so much potential there. Perhaps them going after A.I.M., or the Mad Thinker?
