What are your thoughts on Jim Callenreese aka Ash’s father?
Hi Banana Fish question ☺️ Ash’s biological father, James/Jim Callenreese - we know that after going to the police, and coming up short he decided to tell Ash to basically let himself be assaulted but get paid, and well I was in a discussion about this a few days ago. To which one person said what exactly is wrong with what he said? How is that advice wrong? And what should he have said? And I can’t fathom how it was correct of him to tell his son to basically allow the abuse to happen but make sure you get money out of it? I know he did go to the police, and they were not of help but that doesn’t mean he took the right measures to protect or comfort his son! And they were also like what was Jim to do? He couldn’t go after the coach with no evidence(I also remember the coach was well-respected), and while I get they’re kind of right there. It would be hard with little to no evidence or going against someone who’s loved by the community, but there had to be other ways he as a parent could have protected his child! Like move away from that town, keep a close eye on your child(like walk to and back from school) and hell pull your child out from soccer practice where the rapist is(It was Ash’s soccer coach)! Another thing is do you think it’s wrong to be disgusted by his behaviour towards Ash when he briefly returned home? To simply want/wish he was a bit nicer/a lil empathetic to his estranged child even though Ash ran away? Instead of being degrading/insulting like he was!
Diff asks, answering together.
I despise Jim Callenreese, and I think we are supposed to feel angry and disgusted with him. He's a failure of a father, 100%.
However, failed dads and abusers can still love their children/victims to a degree. Just not enough, and loving them doesn't save them.
I do think Jim loves his son to a degree. I just think he failed his son, and is a coward unwilling to face his failures. His love for his son is not strong enough to eclipse his love for himself. Whether or not you'd call that love is up to you, because the degree of care is surely weakened by the vast, vast ways in which Jim Callenreese failed Ash. Even doing minor things like covering for Ash in some ways doesn't fix what he did wrong.
what exactly is wrong with what he said? How is that advice wrong? And what should he have said?
Honestly, this type of attitude scares me. I can only assume the person who wrote it is very young, because like, I'm at an age where I hope to have children in the next couple years, and... don't have kids if that's your attitude. I firmly believe that you should be willing to sacrifice for your kids especially when they are so young, and Jim wasn't at all. He let it keep happening to keep other aspects of his life comfortable. That's what he did. He chose himself over his son. Move to Boston and live in a homeless shelter if you have to, Jim. Just, try. Even if you can't succeed, try to protect your kid. I promise it means more if you try and fail than if you never tried at all.
There's a factor in the manga that the show neglected, too: Ash's mom was 17 when she gave birth to Ash. So. Yeah, I think we're supposed to see Jim failing Ash in part because Jim, himself, isn't a good person and has himself sexually taken advantage of a vulnerable teenager, even if it wouldn't have been illegal in Massachusetts.

ASFJFSFJ when irl the average age of being a US-vietnam soldier was 19/22 then you have Griffin “born in 1957, in Vietnam in 1973 at earliest” Callenreese being SIXTEEN at that point of time, a literal baby shipped to the other side of the world either alongside other babies (Max) or with other adults all just for the sake of getting money to raise Ash n giving him a good life which was never even possible bc of horrible things outside your circumstances so all of your mental trauma at best was for nothing and at worst open the gateways for even more terror… rip Griffin Callrenreese you could never be truly acknowledged
#NOBODY is doing it like him goddd#like with yut-lung’s mother the stitch was arguably doomed from the start BUT you could argue that at home maaybe Griffin could’ve#either picked up on ash’s bitch coach/stopped him OR just stood by ash so he would’nt have needed to run away/get picked up by the nafia??#ngggg it so fucking heartbreaking to think about him#griffin callenreese#griffin callenreese my beloved#banana fish#bfish#ash lynx#aslan jade callenreese#jim callenreese

Wanna talk about Jim Callenreese.
I absolutely don't understand this character.
I am haunted by the thought that if Callenreese brothers had a normal father, everything would be different. No banana fish, no mafia. Just calm life in Cape-Cod.
More than once I wondered why Griffin was drafted into the war. Based on what I read about Vietnam, among others, young people who couldn't go to college were called there. It is logical to assume that Griffin was among them. However, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be able to enroll there. Other characters described him as a quiet guy who loved poetry. Not a fool, not a bully, I'm sure he was able to get a good education in Boston.
I see two variations here: the need to take care of Aslan and the lack of money. If everything is clear with the first, then a question arises with the second. Did Jim have no money for his son's education? I don't want to believe that he was so irresponsible that he didn't realize that Griffin had to learn. Of course, after he threw the care of the younger child on the schoolboy, it's easy to believe in it. Could he deliberately shrug off responsibility, deciding that since Griffin has grown up, let him provide for himself?
There's no chance Jim didn't know that those who didn't get into college would inevitably be taken to Vietnam.
There is one more thought that I really don't want to take for the truth, but it has a place to be. It was shared by one person as a suggestion in her fic, but it is firmly stuck in my head: Jim deliberately sent his eldest son to Vietnam. The image of Jim is presented quite clearly: a typical tough man, rather rude, not inclined to show empathy. As proof, I will cite his attitude towards the seven-year-old child, his own son, who was r#ped. And now let's look at Griffin's characterization: calm, does not accept cruelty, empathizes with people next to him. Confirmation is the description that Max gave, and even Abraham Dawson noticed that Griffin never bullied him, unlike other soldiers.
Could Jim think Griffin wasn't "manly" enough? Did he hold the opinion that the army would help "fix" this? Unfortunately, such judgments are not uncommon, I often hear similar things addressed to nice polite guys. As a rule, this is the opinion of sloppy tipsy men who have testosterone in their heads.
To be honest, Jim didn't strike me as a bad and cruel person. Maybe I look through rose-colored glasses but it seems to me that he doesn't know how to express his feelings, hiding under the mask of rudeness and insensitivity. He said a lot of terrible things to Ash, but when he talked to Max and the others afterwards, it looked like he cared. Jennifer said Jim was glad Ash was back in his own way.
Maybe I just want there to be more people in Ash's life who care, even if it's an ambiguous father. This boy was surrounded by disgusting, cruel people from an early age, and I'm looking for at least some loophole from where I can get something good for him.
However, Jim didn't help little Aslan when he needed him so much. As I said earlier, I don't understand Jim and his motives.
Despite all the shit that came out of Jim's mouth when he spoke to Ash, I don't want to believe that he was such a bad person that he didn't care that his first son was taking part in such a terrible war while the second was suffering from the encroachments of a vile coach.
But he made no attempt to help them. Jim didn't beat the coach himself when the cops refused to investigate. He didn't give Griffin the opportunity to get an education instead of dying in Vietnam. Of course, we don't know for sure what happened, but - oh my God - I don't believe Griffin went to Vietnam voluntarily.
I don't know what to think. I want to believe in the best, but I only see the bad.
I love these boys so much..

Chapters: 1/1
Word Count: 1916
Ash is still staring at his hands, looking at them like they don't belong to him, like they could turn on him at any moment. "He told me to ask for money, you know? He told me to let them do whatever they wanted to me. To shut up and take it. But to ask for money."
"I know," Eiji mumbles, trying to keep his voice from breaking.
"D-did he t-tell you about—" Ash is hiccupping through his words, breathy and almost panicked.
Eiji wants to hold him.
"Did he tell you about the time I tried to seduce him?"
After Jim Callenreese is shot, Eiji realizes that Ash still cares for the man who should have been his father.

Birthplace: Massachusetts, United States

Sibling(s): Griffin Callenreese
Bio:
TRIGGER WARNING: CSA, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, GANGS, ETC.
Ash Lynx, or Aslan Callenreese, was born in Cape Cod to his father and his second wife. Yet he never actually knew his mother because she walked out on his father when Ash was just a few months old, leaving him to be raised by his father and brother.
Yet his father was honestly terrible. He was an alcoholic and was extremely neglectful so he gave all legal rights to raise Ash to his brother, Griffith. Griffith absolutely loved his little brother and was the one person that Ash cared about more than anything, yet even these happy memories with his brother didn’t last.
Griffith chose to leave for the army when Ash was six years old, he was immediately shipped off to Vietnam. (Iraq in the anime). This left Ash all alone with his father, who definitely wasn’t happy to be left with Ash again even if he had no involvement in his life.
It’s at the age of seven that he was raped by the coach for the local little league which deeply traumatized Ash. Though his father notified the police about it, they didn’t believe him so his father simply told Ash “Let him do it again but ask for money next time.”. Ash was raped repeatedly by this coach until the age of eight where he chose to take matters into his own hands and used his father’s gun to kill his rapist.
It’s then the coach was uncovered to be a child murderer and was labeled the “Cape Cod Blue Beard” and Ash was found not guilty for killing him by means of self defense. This killing made Ash the talk of the town where everyone harassed him with questions about what happened, his father saw the toll it did on Ash so he sent him to live with his aunt.
This did not go well as Ash was already severely traumatized and never even made it to his aunt’s house. As a runaway kid in New York, he was immediately kidnapped by a group of child traffickers for prostitution. He’s immediately sent to a place called Club Cod. A club owned by mafia don, Dino Golzine, where Ash is absolutely horrified by it but he has to learn how to survive in this new situation if he didn’t want to end up dead the way the other kids secretly would if they preformed badly enough.
He learned how to be extremely charismatic and entice the politicians and other mafia members in this club, even unfortunately staring in adult films and photoshoots that he’s since been trying to destroy for his own pride. To this day, camera clicks when he's not asked for a photo are still a huge trigger for him as the memories of these 'photoshoots' and 'videos' come flooding back.
He caught the eye of Dino Golzine who personally took Ash as a personal sex slave or “pet”. Dino would then teach Ash everything of someone in the upper class, including fine dining and extremely high education which later resulted in Ash having an IQ of 210. Not only was he raised like someone in the upper class would, but he was taught to fight and shoot where he’d learn how to use a handgun and knife by a profession Russian assassin named Blanca.
At fourteen, he fell in love with a very nice girl but it never went anywhere as she was killed immediately once it was assumed she was Ash’s girlfriend. He never even got to tell the girl he loved her, and it was a sign for Ash that he simply can’t let people get too close.
When he was fifteen, he was sent to juvenile detention for killing three people where he met his best friend, Shorter Wong. It was seeing Shorter’s gang in Chinatown that he slowly gets the idea to start a gang.
Yet these thoughts of pulling up one stops when he finally found his brother Griffith in a dirty old hospital for unnamed Vietnam soldiers (a regular hospital in the anime). Griffith was completely handicapped and many doctors assumed he was brain dead but Ash knew he was still alive so he got him out of the hospital and into his dingy old apartment with his roommate, who was a little boy he befriended.
Wanting to earn better money and try to figure out what the hell happened to his older brother, Ash started up a gang in Manhattan at the age of sixteen and works under Dino Golzine. He has plans to expose him and everyone else once he hears about this “Banana Fish” that is supposedly connected to Dino and his brother.
While Ash can be very serious but crack a few jokes, he struggles a lot with his personal demons. He’s suffered so much that he easily can risk his life doing something because he’s been through so much that dying simply isn’t a big deal to him anymore. He can be philosophical as well but absolutely terrifying to deal with if you’re on his kill list. He can shoot right between the eyes at a far distance without much trouble and skilled with his fists and knives.
He’s also very sex repulsed, having been abused for so long by it that all he can view sex as is simply the easiest way to get what you want so Ash only every offers sex if he needs information, money or manipulate someone to get what he wants. The act disgusts him, to a point of nausea, that he refuses to get intimate with anyone. Even if he managed to fall in love, the overwhelming repulsion of sex is too much for him to make an exception.

WAIT I JUST SAW THAT YOU YOU ARE ALSO DOING THE TOUCHES PROMPT LIST 😯 can you do 'secret kisses' with GriffinxMax (if you are still taking prompts) 🥺
Jsvshskba I saw this and forgot to respond love I'm sorry 😞
Griff watched his father huff around the kitchen, digging up the cupboards in search of a bottle. When his hands turned up empty, he grabbed his keys, mumbled a "get him home before I'm back" then stumbled out the house, slamming the door behind him. Flinching, he turned back to his biology book, then warily looked up at the boy on the other side of the table. He gave a small smile and muttered a "sorry" before returning to the article on methane gases.
The brunet reached out and grabbed his hand, moving the pen to hold it properly. He smiled as he rubbed his thumb over the knuckles.
"Max, I didn't hear the truck leave..." Griffin whispered, cheeks dusted with red.
Max only smiled wider. He pulled Griff's hand up until the knuckles touched his lips gently.
Ignoring the warning glare Griff was firing, Max got up and travelled farther down his arm. He planted soft, airy kisses on Griffin's wrist, forearm, bicep (which was sculpted by the gods, bless) and shoulder, before moving on to his collar bone (thanks you, 90°, for convincing him to wear a tank top that day.) Max moved up to the dip in Griffin's neck and he could feel Griff swallow under his lips. Soft pants drifted onto Max's forehead as the brunet pulled away, smiling at the flustered expression painted on Griffin's face.
Max licked his lips. "You're cute," he murmured.
Griff pushed him away. His face felt like it was on fire. "What was that's for?"
"I wanted to cheer you up." Max leaned back and kissed his cheek. "It worked, no?"
"My dad..."
"Forget the old fart, for five minutes. He's out there right now, and we're here. It's okay."
The back door creaked open, causing Max to scramble back to his set. He picked up his textbook and hid behind it as Jim walked in. Jim eyed his red faced son, then slammed his keys back onto the counter.
"Tell him to leave. Now."
The air between the three of them was thick enough to cut with a knife. Max burrowed himself farther into his book, but Griffin stood up.
"We still have to cover history."
Jim growled. "I don't care."
"That's obvious." Griffin rolled his eyes. "I'm in highschool on a scholarship."
"Now where did that lip come from, huh?"
A tug on his sleeve caused Griffin to keep his mouth shut. He looked back at Max, who looked a little pale. Sighing, Griffin waved Jim off, picking up his bag to start packing his books. Max followed suit. Satisfied, Jim wattled into the kitchen, just out of sight.
"Hey." Griffin shoved his pencil case in the bag, almost ripping his folder. "Hey, relax." He looked up at Max, eyes aged four years just from that conversation. Max cupped his cheek, wiping a stray tear from his cheek. "We can study for history in the morning, k?"
"Yeah."
Max furrowed his eyebrows, a cute worry line forming in his forehead. He glanced back at the kitchen, noting Jim was still out of view, before quickly kissing Griff again. "It'll be okay. See you tomorrow?"
Griff allowed a small smile to tug at his lips. "Yeah. Thank you. See you tomorrow." Max stepped back and headed for the front door. Just as his hand grabbed the handle, he felt a kiss on the back of his neck, then a hug. "See you tomorrow, love."

Short gasps of air, shaky breathes and his strained voice showed that Aslan was already reaching his end. After years of justified frustration against his biological father
Jim would've expected longer yelling and even receiving a few punches, maybe. Makes one wonder when was the last time Aslan had to yell like that.
In where Ash takes one more trip to Cape Cod to finally make peace with his past... and the man that was supposed to raise him.
Happy Birthday Ash :D

I could write entire essays about Griffin Callenreese and Yut Lung's mother. Essays.
They're parallel characters, they're the duo that never met. They're the pivotal ghosts of the series, all occurs because of them and they couldn't even see it, they're the stereotypical embodiment of "femininity" and "masculinity" gone rotten and wrong. They were both outcasted and neglected by their fathers, presumably no mother. They're the child-caretakers in both senses, having to take care of a child as a child. They're the sacrificals and the sacrificial lambs.
#i call yut lung's mother meilin btw which means plum jade#in the end all theyre remember for is their gentleness#but we dont hear their opinions#theres nobody to tell theur secrets or their stories#did they secretly resent ash and yut lung for eating up their childhoods?#we dont know. nobody does.#griffin callenreese#yut lung's mother#meilin banana fish#banana fish#ash callenreese#ash lynx#lee yut lung#yut lung lee#jim callenreese

The thing about both Griffin's and Ash's moms is that they left. There's a full stop there. Yes it would have been lovely if they would have come back to their children and adopted the other but that's a fantasy. Jim was the one who actually had the power to make a difference. He could have been a good dad. He could have raised the best kids. But no. One of his kids found his escapade in drugs while the other was you know. He could have gotten over whatever grief he was going through or maybe he could have just left them in an orphanage or something. If he didn't want them, he shouldn't have fucked them up so bad. He had absolutely no right to do.
