When Luo Fei needed to distract the policemen guarding the station door at night, the fortuitous appearance of the Dongjiang boy he wouldn't forget, gave him the perfect opportunity. Nosy policemen needed good entertainment that gave them something to gossip about.

Since @victorian-pirate brought my attention to @dual-domination exposing one of my WIP Detective L fanfics (jk love you dad), I guess I’ll share a little snippet of my own. It’s a pre-canon non-shipping fic, so yeah. Here ya go:

Ben Jieming was still a field officer at the time. The station had been called for a public disturbance for fighting by a nearby business. It was late into the evening, when the drinking crowd usually started to cause problems, so he didn’t think anything of it, until he rounded the corner and recognized the jacket of the man towering over another. His back was turned but there was no mistaking it. It was Luo Fei.

The sobbing pleas of the man beneath him seemed useless as Luo Fei gripped the shirt collar of the other and punched him again. “Tell me!” he screamed into the bleeding and bruised face of this poor stranger. “Where did he go? Who smuggled him out of the city?!”

“Please. Please. I don’t know what you’re talking about. Please. I don’t know who you’re talking about.” The stranger begged and grasped at Luo Fei’s jacket desperately. 

“THE CAPTAIN!”

Ben finally shook himself out of shock. “Luo Fei!” His voice made his friend freeze, though his grip holding the stranger up off the ground stayed tight on the bloody shirt collar. “Let him go, Luo Fei.” Luo Fei looked over his shoulder at Ben and the look in his eyes was completely foreign to Ben. He was lost and utterly consumed. It was a wonder that there was that small shred of recognition when he locked eyes on Ben where he stood at the end of the alleyway. 

Ben hadn’t drawn his firearm, but as the other officer that came to respond to the call with him turned the corner and took in the bloody scene, he didn’t hesitate to point his gun straight at Luo Fei. “Step away from each other and hands against the wall,” the rookie cop ordered stiffly.

“Just wait. Give me a second,” Ben scolded the other, raising up a hand to force him to lower his gun. “It’s fine. Just let me handle this.” He sounded far more confident in that fact than he actually felt.

“But sir?”

“Just don’t let anyone leave this alley. It’ll be fine.” He patted the man’s shoulder before stepping forward and moving closer to Luo Fei, who hadn’t moved where he stood over the stranger. “Luo Fei,” he called out again, softer this time as he stopped a few meters away.

The anger on his face shifted to desperation as Luo Fei turned his vacant look to Ben Jieming. “He knows.”

“About the Captain?” Ben asked gently.

Luo Fei nodded sharply. “He has to know. I … He …”

No telling when it will be finished but yeah. Brain was thinking about what shaped Luo Fei before the start of the series and showing that is the goal of this fic

No, I didn’t use the trio having coffee in the autopsy room as argument to tell anyone to watch Detective L...  Definitely not. But this is a very good argument, though.
