Not "shake a lemon angrily at G-d" week, but rather;
Gather a citron, an ancient fruit predating the cultivation of lemon. Notice how it has a wonderful aroma, and consider how its flesh is edible. This represents the Jew who is both learned in Judaism and who exhibits kindness and good deeds.
Now gather the closed frond at the center of a palm tree. Consider how sweet the dates of the palm taste, but how the frond exhibits no strong smell like the citron. This represents the Jew who is learned in Judaism, but who does not practice the compassion in the many texts they studied.
Now gather at least three branches from a myrtle bush. Take in the refreshing scent oozing from the branches' thick leaves, but see how it does not bear fruit. This represents the Jew who is not learned in Judaism, but whose good character and actions are exceptional.
Finally, gather two branches from the somber willow. While mighty and enveloping, the willow exhibits no strong aroma, nor does it produce fruit. This represents the Jew who is neither learned in Judaism nor kind in character and deeds.
Appreciate the various textures and shapes of these four species. Feel the weight of them in your hand. Value how different in so many aspects each of them are.
Take them all in your hands, and bind them together like an embrace. Point them in all the corners of the earth- South, North, East, heavenward, downward, and West. Think of all your Jewish brethren scattered around the world, and bring your precious bundle back to your heart with every direction you send it to. Contemplate the place of every Jew in your community, the Etrog, the Lulav, the Hadas, and the Arava, for they all belong.
This is the meaning of Sukkot: coming back to our roots and our bare essence. Erect a temporary dwelling in reminiscence of your wandering ancestors. Come together under the stars, as exposed and unguarded as when we first walked the earth. Welcome guests into your makeshift home, be they family, friends, or the spirits of founding ancestors passed. Surround yourself in your community- and bring it all back to your heart.

Rhetoric like Jamaal Bowman’s has deeply affected the Jewish community.
Synagogues are being desecrated, vandalized with graffiti and getting bomb threats. Jewish schools are evacuated for security and Jewish children are attacked. Not long ago a violent mob came to a Synagogue in LA.
Bowman, whose district has a large Jewish population, just lost the primary.
Instead of the obvious answer, the world has resorted to the dual loyalty trope. “You can’t trust a J3w to do what’s best for the country they live in because they only care about Israel!”— It can’t be that we’re just worried about our safety which you take away from us. It can’t be that we see how Bowman dehumanizes us with claims that we “segregate ourselves.” It has to be that the nasty, disloyal J3ws used their billions and billions of dollars to make poor Bowman, a former elected public official, lose.
I’m not buying it and neither should you.

TIL that Jumblr exists. It's really hard being Jewish both online and offline rn, so if you're seeing this, here's a reminder that your pain matters, your lived experience is important, and antisemitism will never win so long as there are Jews in the world living happy, fulfilling lives.

dont forget to kiss the mezuzah on your way in!
shalom!! you can call me Eli (for Eliezer) if you need to put a name to my presence. this is my Judaism blog, for anything that relates, probably primarily books (i now have a stack of Jewish books and am slowly working my way through it TwT), art, fashion, cooking, meditation, anything!
i am:
༄.° 18 years old, been considering conversion since i was around 15
༄.° blessed to be genderqueer. my pronouns are she/her, he/him, xe/xem/xyr, fin/fins, gill/gills, cer/cers, in no particular order
༄.° a prospective convert - i currently am not in the best position to convert as i live out of town of the Conservative synagogue i am hoping to convert through, but i am trying (and really really hoping) to make it work
༄.° hoping to learn some amount of Hebrew, Yiddish, Spanish, Ladino, Arabic, and French in my lifetime
༄.° a Star Trek fan! are you surprised? /lh (admittedly ive not watched most of it, and im primarily a fan of The Next Generation - Data, my beloved!)
༄.° alterhuman/otherkin/other such similar terms. this wont come up most likely but it is important to me, and something i think one can be casual about online. im not gonna post my 'types but if youre interested in knowing them, shoot me a DM maybe :3
this blog is NOT antizionism friendly - i will probably block you. if you consider Zionists to be bad Jews or people, you should block me. i will not respond to asks about the conflict. my asks are open and the anon option is on for anyone that might want to chat but is shy, not for hate.
messianic 'Jews' will be blocked on sight. other Christians are on thin ice - i ask that yall dont reblog or reply my posts with any Christian commentary. this is Jewish-related blog, for Jewish people.
other people i dont really fuck with and will probably block:
༄.° transmeds
༄.° so-called misanthropes
༄.° Wiccans (specifically Wiccans, otherwise witches and folk magic practioners are alright)
༄.° TERFs, radfems
BOTH Israelis and Palestinians deserve a safe home without war, and no one side or people deserves damnation just because of their government. Hamas is a terrorist organization.
im trying to observe Shabbos more, in the ways that appeal to me and make me feel closer to HaShem, so i might not be online Friday evenings and Saturdays (Central Standad Time)
im gonna come up with a tags list, stay tuned!
buhbye!

Jewishpridwalways is the source 🇮🇱💙
In the late 1930s,over 20,000 Jews escaped to Shanghai .
By the time that WW2 broke out ,Shanghai was home to more Jewish refugees than any other city in the world .
Today , there are around 2,500 Jews who live in China .
Shanghai and Beijing have synagogues and Jewish communities 💙🫂🇮🇱

Alabama could soon begin using its newly constructed gas chamber to carry out what would be the first-ever execution using nitrogen hypoxia. Alabama's new gas chamber has never been tested and a new protocol for carrying out an execution using nitrogen hypoxia was released with extensive redactions.
...
Members of the Jewish community who indicate so when they sign on to this petition are also adding their name to the following stand-alone statement: JEWISH COMMUNITY STATEMENT OPPOSING THE GAS CHAMBER Jewish tradition presents somewhat contradictory statements regarding the death penalty. While the Torah permits the death penalty, the Talmud, in Tractate Sanhedrin, imposes severe limits on capital punishment even where the crime is murder. Contemporary US laws do not meet the standards for fairness and accuracy as articulated in Jewish law. Today we are writing not about the death penalty as a whole, but about proposed forms of execution. Certainly there are members of Jewish communities in states using the gas chamber who support the death penalty in concept or in practice. However, we stand united in opposition to the introduction of the gas chamber as a form of execution. We do not suggest comparisons to the atrocities of Nazi Germany under which millions of our relatives were murdered, many by suffocation in sealed chambers. Still, we cannot imagine it possible that Jewish communities anywhere could stand by while prisoners are executed by the state in our names, using any variation of that mechanism. Therefore, the undersigned Rabbis, Cantors and other leaders the Jewish community call on you to reject the conduct of executions by suffocation in any sort of gas chamber anywhere in the United States.

Just wanted to share a little positivity! Today at a doctor's appointment my family doctor (an observant Hindu and outspoken member of my city's growing Hindu community) pulled me aside to check in on the local Jewish community. How are we feeling? Do we feel safe? How can his Temple help ours? He said there's a lot of support to be found in the Hindu community and he even wished me Happy Hanukkah!
Awww that's amazing!
