The Genealogy of Jesus Christ
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the son of Abraham:
2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
and Hezron the father of Ram.
4 Ram was the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
and Nahshon the father of Salmon.
5 Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth,
and Obed the father of Jesse.
6 Jesse was the father of David the king.
David the king was the father of Solomon, by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
and Abijah the father of Asa.
8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Joram,
and Joram the father of Uzziah.
9 Uzziah was the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.
10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
and Amon the father of Josiah.
11 Josiah was the father of Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were exiled to Babylon.
12 And after they were brought to Babylon,
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel.
13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud,
Abiud the father of Eliakim,
and Eliakim the father of Azor.
14 Azor was the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
and Akim the father of Eliud.
15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
and Matthan the father of Jacob.
16 And Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the exile to Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the exile in Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations.
The Birth of Jesus Christ
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way: After His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, had in mind to divorce her privately.
20 But while he thought on these things, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for He who is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22 Now all this occurred to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet, saying, 23 “A virgin shall be with child, and will bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is interpreted, “God with us.”
24 Then Joseph, being awakened from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and remained with his wife, 25 and did not know her until she had given birth to her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. — Matthew 1 | Modern English Version (MEV) The Holy Bible, Modern English Version. Copyright © 2014 by Military Bible Association. for the record. baptism for the dead isn't "nonconsensual" in any way? like doctrinally it's an offering that the dead person is free to accept or reject.
and:
if you don't believe in an afterlife then why do you care at all
if you do believe in an afterlife but don't believe in baptism according to the lds tradition/priesthood authority in the lds church/that the baptism is going to do anything then why do you care
if you do believe that the baptism is real and valid but that it's wrong to offer it/it's somehow forced upon that person and a violation of their agency I don't believe you. I don't think that's a position that anyone holds for real
more likely people are uncomfortable with a possible disrespect of the living by dishonoring their dead or something along those lines
but:
you are supposed to submit the names of your own ancestors. We are doing this for OUR dead
hence the whole genealogy thing. you know. FAMILY search
what I believe to be the main criticism in this regard is not current events
Tumblr media
in conclusion:
USE the church's genealogical resources for whatever you want! you are not participating in anything shady
if you are freaked out by the concept of baptism for the dead because "it sounds like a weird cult thing" or something, maybe get over it and open your mind a little bit?
you can compare it to like. praying on behalf of a dead person. honoring your ancestors. a normal and common thing across many cultures

Lessons From a Genealogy (Ruth 4:18-22)
By listing someone’s descendants in writing, it indicates an ongoing developing story which has happened, and continues to develop up to the present time, and even into the future.
Now these are the descendants of Perez: Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron of Ram, Ram of Amminadab, Amminadab of Nahshon, Nahshon of Salmon, Salmon of Boaz, Boaz of Obed, Obed of Jesse, and Jesse of David. (New Revised Standard Version) No, I didn’t make a mistake about what the verses are for today from the Revised Common Lectionary. Yes, the Old Testament lesson is a brief genealogy.…

Family tree
Genealogy is interesting. Kind of. If it’s yours.
Somebody else’s genealogy? Not that interesting. Unless you know something about the people listed in it.
Today’s Gospel is the genealogy of Jesus. At first glance, it’s little more than a list of who was the father or mother of someone. Mostly names you’ve never seen before.
But if you start looking more closely at the people on the list, a picture emerges. But it’s not one that we would necessarily expect.
The list includes kings and priests, farmers and warriors. But it also includes murderers and adulterers, prostitutes and thieves. C.S. Lewis called it a bloodline with “both honor enough to raise the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the proudest emperor.”
God is calling you to do something. God put you here for a reason. If you’re still drawing a breath, there is something that God is calling you to do.
And God will give you everything you need to do what He’s calling you to do, if you let Him.
If you’re holding back, because you don’t think you’ve got what it takes. If you’re thinking, “I could never do that” – because of how you were raised, or the problems in your family, or your ethnicity, or where you’re from – take a look at the family tree of Jesus.
It’s a mixed mess. One that God intentionally chose to be the gene pool of His only Son.
God intentionally chose it. Not just to fulfill the prophecies about where the Messiah would come from.
But to give you and me the most personal example possible (His own Son) of what really matters. For Jesus to show us, with His life, that living fully in God’s will for our lives (think Garden of Gethsemane) is the only thing that really matters.
That no background or baggage can keep you from fulfilling God’s will for your life, if you give yourself fully to God.

The Promise Of The King
Before the First Advent of Jesus, many people were beginning to lose hope that God would keep His promise. Many feel the same way today. But the fact of the First Advent of Jesus should build our anticipation for the fulfillment of God’s promise of the Se

Genealogy Matters: Ordinary People Who Resulted in an Extraordinary Genealogy
Genealogy Matters: Ordinary People Who Resulted in an Extraordinary Genealogy
The whole genealogy thing is really popular right now. People are looking at their DNA to see where they came from, what their genetic makeup is. Apparently there are hidden clues for each of us that can help us understand who we are! Looking For Clues Well, if that’s so, think about this: have you ever wondered who Jesus of Nazareth really was? Where he came from? If you’ve ever read his…

The Genealogy of Jesus
1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;
3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;
5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;
9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;
10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;
11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;
13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;
15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus. — Matthew 1 | King James Version (KJV) The King James Version Bible is in the public domain. A Family Christmas
Photo by Rod Long on Unsplash  It’s Christmas morning. Families around the world will take up a tradition passed down by generations and read the story of Jesus’ birth. Some will go to Matthew 1-2, others will go to Luke 1-2. Whichever gospel one chooses, both contain passages most will likely skip over: the genealogy of Christ. Luke’s genealogy is easier to avoid; he waits to include his until…

Can’t Stop God’s Love Stories
My cousin and I were excited to meet up with four of our cousins who we hadn’t seen or even talked to for over forty years. We spoke of our grandparents with their 10 children. “Remember Grandpa’s preaching? He spared no words.” “Remember how precious Grandma was?” “What about those huge meals she’d cook — roast, chicken AND squirrel? She was the best cook EVER!” “I remember Grandma saying ‘You…
