It took a while to conceptualize and draw, but here she is. My "Loud House" character hybrid. This is what her causal appearance looks like. And as I stated here, she's got Leni and Carlota's kindness, Lisa's brains, and Maria's nursing qualities. And this is just something I thought of, but when she's not on duty, she likes to cosplay as other fictional characters like Leni and Carlota would (I assume, since they both have a strong fashion sense).

As far as her age, she's roughly in her 20s. She's also single, but she'll only date boys her age. Out of all the Loud siblings, she cares for Lincoln the most, due to being an only son. So whenever she visits, she and Lincoln could do fun stuff he likes such as going to movie theaters to see movies or playing arcade machines or even going out to restaurants for lunch or dinner, but she also cares for Lincoln's sisters too.

If she were converted into live action like with the live action Cartoon Network show, "The Really Loud House", the back of her hands won't have veins, and like her animated counterpart, she's youthful,

I don't know what her first name should be, but since she would be related to the Loud family in some way, her first name should start with either an L or R (Feel free to comment name suggestions for her).

This hybrid character is not an OC I would use for self-inserts or original fanfiction stories like my other OCs (which are all men, but I have an idea for at least one female OC). She would primarily be used for drawings, but you're more than welcome to use her as long as you remember to credit me. You can also comment suggestions for who you think should voice her, even if it's a voice talent who currently voices any existing "Loud House" and "Casagrandes" characters (ex. Liliana Mumy who voices Leni, Alexa PenaVega who voices Carlota, Jessica DiCicco who voices Lynn, Lucy, and other characters, Lara Jill Miller who voices Lisa and other characters, Nika Futterman who voices Luna and other characters, Grey Griffin who voices Lana, Lola, Lily, and other characters, etc.).

Sneak peek of my new drawing that's coming tomorrow! 😀

It will be Lynn Loud cosplaying as Yellow Toad, which one of my favorite voice actresses, Jessica DiCicco voiced in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, as she used her Lynn voice of Yellow Toad (albeit pitched up). Unfortunately, I didn't have time to finish this, as I went to a shopping mall earlier, and it's already getting late in my local. This will also be my first drawing for this month in April.

Was MissHabit Partial Inspiration for Pyrrha Nikos in RWBY?

If you’ve stumbled into this post, chances are you seen the second video in my “Monty Oum’s Vision for RWBY” video project. In it, I referred to many of the sources of inspirations and concepts that would shape RWBY into being the type of show it would become. One of those inspirations was Monty’s interest in cosplay and the cosplayers he knew personally. Among those cosplayers was Amie Lynn, otherwise known as “MissHabit” and how I claimed she served as partial inspiration for not just the character Weiss Schnee, but possibly Pyrrha Nikos as well.

But how did I even come to that conclusion if Monty never explicitly said-so himself?

In case I did not drive my point home clearly enough in the video, I want to stress that this is all guesswork on my part. Monty did in fact state the based another character with MissHabit in mind besides Weiss but he never specified which one. He at most only teased how he got the idea for the character towards her. So nothing is really conclusive. But the assumption I made was not at all a shot in the dark. I spent time collecting certain sources, connecting dots and contemplating on my own. In the end, I’m not one-hundred percent certain. But I figured it would at least be worth sharing how exactly I thought this through.

First, let’s examine the following tweets from Monty himself:

Him claiming a character’s design was inspired by MissHabit

Him claiming how another character aside from Weiss was inspired by MissHabit

Him referring to how she wore a wig one day, a set of armor another day, and her smile

Him stating it was a secret

Him telling MissHabit that they’ll talk at Pax

One thing of note is the timing of those tweets. which were on March 11th, 2013. At this point, the Black trailer wouldn’t premiere until the 22nd of March. While one could argue that Blake Belladonna was the character Monty referred to, he then explicitly replied to both MissHabit and Linda Le, otherwise known as “Vampy-Bit-Me”, stating how the he had the latter in mind when designing Blake. So then, if it was not likely Blake, then maybe it was Yang Xiao Long instead since her trailer would not premiere until June 2nd. Well, here’s the thing, Monty explicitly stated that Barbara Dunkelman, the voice of Yang, was a big inspiration for the character, so much so that his pitch for casting her as Yang was simply put, “you should play Goldilocks”. It was kind of a no-brainer.

It obviously could not have been Ruby Rose either since her trailer had come out months prior to the above list of tweets and Monty was being very secretive about the matter. So then, if this other character was likely someone outside of team RWBY, who else could it be? Well, there are a few other clues that help narrow things down. For one, Jessica Nigri would end up voicing Cinder and thus would have likely served as a partial source of inspiration for the character as well. Then there’s that one tweet about how MissHabit wore a wig one day, a set of armor another and how Monty referred to her smile. The armor and smile aspect specifically does aptly describe Pyrrha’s character, though one could also state that maybe he was referring to Nora as well since she smiles a lot and has the braces around her torso in her volume 1-3 design. Then again, if say Pyrrha was the character in question, when Monty talked about how the supposed character was “designed with MissHabit in mind”, there’s a chance he’s referring to not Pyrrha’s final design from concept artist Einlee, but rather from Monty’s original design of her.

    He obviously didn’t elaborate on what kind of wig or armor Miss Habit wore, but one famous cosplay of hers is that of Lightning in Final Fantasy XIII-2. That character’s design and Pyrrha’s initial concept design do share a few similarities, but there’s definitely no confirmation as to whether he based the initial look off of Lightning at all. And Monty went on record to correcting people whenever his characters in RWBY were compared to specific characters in other popular works of fiction, so we’ll leave a question mark in that regard.

However, one last clue and is probably the biggest one is that of Misshabit’s own personality and experiences. In interviews and other videos, she expressed things about herself that stick out. In one of her Q & A videos on Youtube, she mentioned about how she wound up being the kind of person she is today (assuming she still is the same person years after that video). She mentioned how by the middle of her high school years, she became a more optimistic person and someone that wanted to help people and do the right thing. Also in that video and certain interviews like the one at Pax East, her interviewer assumed that she broke the hearts of guys as if her appearance and personality garnered naturally garnered such romantic attention. But her response suggested that she, at least at the time of the interview, never really got asked out by anyone. Sound familiar?

What I said before bears repeating, but everything stated is all guesswork and nothing more. I don’t know for sure if Pyrrha Nikos was the character Monty was talking about or not and we may never know. Given how MissHabit and Monty saw each other at Pax East 2013 (she cosplayed as Natsu from Soul Calibur 5 then), he seems to have shared some things. But it’s not even clear if he ever really brought up the other character that he claimed to have MissHabit in mind. And the cosplayer does have quite the supposedly quirky personality, so maybe it really could’ve been Nora instead. But even if my hypothesis could be proven wrong, that does not negate the fact that cosplay was a vital cornerstone within Monty’s ideas for RWBY and the various characters in them. Monty cared about seeing people cosplay his characters. Monty was close friends with various professional cosplayers. Monty was conscious about designing characters with pockets and pouches for cosplayers to put their wallets and phones inside when at cons. Monty still created characters like Melanie & Militia because certain friends of his requested a set of twins to cosplay as and Neo who was based off of a gender-bent Roman Torchwick cosplay. And if say, she was based off Pyrhha, that doesn’t change the fact Jen Brown was chosen to voice Pyrrha either and for all we know, she might have somehow served as a bit of inspiration for the character.

This one little thing, regardless of whether or not it’s true, is just a small aspect of the many ideas implemented into RWBY and its creative process.

After seeing what I was able to do with foam for Amie Lynn’s Lighting armor, my friend and Cosplay model Jessica Nigri, contacted me about helping her with an armored costume. She wanted to dress as Anya Stroud from Gears of War 3, and wanted to show people that she does costumes other than just sexy versions.

Pepakura is a program that takes 3D files and breaks them down so you can print out the pieces on A4 card and stick them together to create the object.

First download the program, then open up a pepakura file with. You can get these files from all over the place.

There's a pretty cool Wiki with a big collection of Gears of War pepakura files, which is where I found the file for Carmine's helmet.

This will form the foundation shape which will be built up on with fibreglass and body filler.

Before printing make sure you scale the model so that it will fit. I didn't need to do this as it was the right size. A quick Google can help with this.

PRINT ON CARD - Do not print onto A4 paper then glue to card. I did this form my last project and the glue makes the card bend, which gives you bent pieces, resulting in the final piece being wonky.

If you don't have a printer you can create a PDF using PDFCreator saving you installing pepakura on another computer. PDFCreator is fre.

Cutting and Scoring:

Cutting and scoring takes quite a while and can get tedious. I recommend putting a film on in the background. This will keep you mentally occupied and also act as a time keeper, making sure you don't procrastinate. Cutting all the pieces, and then scoring all the pieces.

Craft knife for Cutting, Scissors (tip of blade) for Scoring.

When cutting, you want to cut through all solid lines. Each piece you cut, mark on the back the page number it was on, and keep all those pieces in one location. Same for every page.

Scoring - There are two types of lines to score, valley folds and mountain folds. Scoring allows for much cleaner folds.

Mountain - - - - - - - - Fold outwards (towards you) Fold = peak of mountain.

Before I start scoring my pieces, I mark all the valley folds as these can be difficult to see once scored.

Sticking:

When I first started doing pepakura, I used sellotape. USE A GLUE GUN. It is definitely worth the investment, it is stronger than sellotape.

Cocktail sticks are very handy for holding glued pieces together while the glue dries, and the glue can be quite hot.

A fan is also useful, as it cools the glue quicker, leaving you holding pieces in place for less time. Also if you do find yourself having to use your fingers to hold bits together, the fan will sometimes make the glue heat a little more bearable.

Numbers on the pieces connect to the same number on another piece or the same piece.

When gluing it is best to glue on the inside of the helmet as this will save time when refining the shape. But sometimes it can't be helped, no worries, this external can be removed with a hot knife in the hardening stage.

One side of my final pepakura model was slightly off, but looked fine when pinched. Instead of pinching it in place during the hardening which would've not been very practical, I used a cocktail stick to create a clamp type thing.

See where the stick goes in through the top and out the bottom. This was poked through, then glue was added just to the bottom portion of the stick. When that dried, I pulled the top of the stick taught, then glued it so it would stay in place.

The stick acts as the pinch, with the bottom portion as my thumb, and the top with my index finger.

The next update will cover fibreglassing (resin and cloth) and the first stage of hardening.

After seeing what I was able to do with foam for Amie Lynn’s Lighting armor, my friend and Cosplay model Jessica Nigri , contacted me about helping her with an armored costume. She wanted to dress as Anya Stroud from Gears of War 3, and wanted to show people that she does costumes other than just sexy versions. She had attempted to use foam and bondo in building her armor but did not have the tools, skills or understanding of how to build her costume. She was trying to use pepakura files modified for foam use but it wasn’t going anywhere.

At that time, I was living at home with my parents, taking care of my mother who had contracted cancer, but I still made time to help Jessica reach her goal. The first step was to teach her how to use the materials and tools properly. up until this point, it was a mess, and hard work with little to show for it. I helped her make templates and how to properly fit the armor to her body.

Because I was busy with family issues, I didn’t have as much hands on as I normally do but I was still able to help Jessica design and fit each part. It was then that I showed her the basic steps needed to seal and paint foam using modge podge, wood glue. I then needed to add the electronics to the chest armor and to do this, I visited my local Pepboys and purchased 2 prewired LED pads. These are some of my favorite tricks to adding lights to a costume without the need of a breat board. The trick was to cut the wires shorter and then solder the leads in a paralled circuit so the lights would be equal brightness rather than in series where the second set would be dimmer. Using a frosted piece of plastic, I placed the lights into the shoulders and took a look at the results.

At this point, my part was done due to my mother becoming more ill, but the positive side was that Jessica and I had gotten her to the point where she could finish the costume on her own. She sewed the fabric parts, used the foam working skills I had taught her, and completed the costume on her own. So I guess you could say this was a collaborative build rather than a commission. Either way, the fans loved her finished costume.

Screenings, panels, shoots, post and fundraising, oh my!

Hi Squeesters!; Lots going on here at Squee Central so I'll break it down:

We had a great time screening and presenting a panel at Awesome Con in DC. It was the first panel where I was joined by both my Associate Producer and Co-writer Lynn Zubernis and my Post Producer, Editor and Co-writer Chinisha Scott, as well as accomplished cosplayer Christine Evans who came dressed as our beautiful Princess Leia. We had a great audience and really enjoyed ourselves. We wish we'd had more time to take questions!

Star Trek in 2017: Sonequa Martin-Green and Six White Men

The current cast of Star Trek Discovery shows how little the needle has moved in 50 years. It has more white men and fewer women and minorities than even The Original Series.

I was looking through old bookmarks the other day and came across a November post where some friends and I were fan-casting the new Star Trek: Discovery. Michelle Yeoh had just been announced as a Captain. (It later turned out that she would be the captain of the Other Ship.) After a couple of names into fan-casting, we decided to ONLY cast women of color for all the roles. We had a blast doing our dream cast.

Which piqued my curiosity for the current cast, and see who’s been hired since November. Imagine my disappointment…… other than the lead, Sonequa Martin-Green, the rest of the cast on the Discovery are white men.

That makes…

Six white men

One woman

ONE WOMAN.

Is this really the best you can do? In 2017? That’s pathetic.

* Note: Since the time of writing, a white woman has been added to the crew, bringing the total of women up to a grand total of two. 

Yes, I know that Michelle Yeoh leads a second ship whose crew includes an Indian-American actor (as a medical officer). Two more black men and a white woman heads up a Klingon ship, but they aren’t on the main ship and are recurring actors. (p.s. Has Star Trek had a black woman play a Klingon yet? Or have there only been white women as Klingons?)

It brings to mind shows like Nikita, Mr. Robot, and Jessica Jones, which were lauded for having a “diverse cast”. As it turns out, however, one Lead PoC, or one prominent PoC, is not a free pass to shunt the rest of your PoC into the supporting cast while your main cast remains white.

I ran the numbers, and there have been a total of THREE main characters played by women of color.

Uhura.

Torres.

Sato.

That’s it. And there have been five casts with 44-ish main characters across five shows. Less than 7% of your main casts are WoC. (And frankly there aren’t many in the supporting casts either, just Guinan, Keiko, and Kasidy.) Hell, even if we cast the ENTIRE Discovery cast with WoC, that would only bring it up to 11 out of 51 characters.

Progressive show? You can’t even escape Hollywood.

Do better, Star Trek.

For your consideration, these were the folks that we put into our fan cast once we decided that we should cast with only WoC. (Some men of color also snuck onto this list before we decided otherwise.)

And don’t say that these folks are already headlining their own shows. Look in their supporting and recurring cast members. WoC actors exist, stretch your imagination and your network a little, for Spock’s sake. It’s 2017. 

Yeah, to paraphrase Brett Gelman, it might be really difficult for the producers to look for WoC actors. But… how difficult is it? You know what’s really difficult? Not having any opportunities open to you in your chosen field. Not seeing yourself represented in the “equal”, progressive future, except in supporting or fleeting guest roles. Or being represented only as A Unicorn, destined to be the only one, a lonely existence without a cohort of people that look like you. 

So yeah, maybe the white, mostly male*, producers could handle having things be kind of inconvenienced for one pivotal moment in their careers.

* Speaking of which, you might have noticed this problem if you had more men and women of color in your creative team. Like, more than zero.
