I’m over Damian, Jesús and Jamie.
Damian continues to protect his mini me, Evil Mr. Clean, yet punishes his daughter, the ONLY LITERAL GOOD THING IN LIFE…for simply falling in love?!
Jesús continues to commit numerous illegal crimes, and Damian doesn’t want to throw him in jail because “he’s the first and can do no wrong”. Not to mention he’s a fucking idiot because outing his own sister reaped no reward for his selfish gain.
Jamie has lost not only Luz as a friend, but Marta as well. He knew about Jesús knew about her relationship with Fina and how he could use it again her; didn’t even bother to say anything. On top of that, he knows Jesús is poisoning Begoña, and didn’t bother to tell Luz.
Tumblr media
Andrés may be an adulterer, but he’s the only good man on this show at the moment.

Don Damián is #atitagain
So how would you feel when, after spending most of your life working for your family's company, having dealt with their misogyny, homophobia, questionable ethics, less-than-stellar business practices, blatant dismissal of your comptencies, undervaluing of your skills, wilful ignorance of your success and a dangerous and unhealthy level of commitment to the business over everything else in life, you finally decide to stuff them and seek your own happiness. And they turn around and offer you the CEO job that you've worked for all your life?
Well Marta, what are you going to do?
Tumblr media
I know I'd tell Damián I'd stick it in whatever hole Valentín was buried and shove a toothless Jesús down there with him (all these slaps can't be good for the bones👋🦷)
He's literally thinking solely about himself; he can ride off into the sunset with Digna, having effectively bequeathed the value of the shares stolen by Jesús to her and her family, also clearing his conscience of that particular misdeed. By kicking Jesús out, he gets the company into safe hands he feels he can control, while also managing to deflect Jesús' ire squarely at Marta and also keeping her from fucking off to leave him to clean up his own mess. And all of that without even the barest hint of a PR crisis that apparently would be the end of the world.
Because effectively, he is absolving himself of all responsibility and putting Marta in the most dangerous position she could be in with the person who wants to do her the most harm and all of that after he's spent the last few weeks harping on about her need for 'protection' for her relationship with Fina.
I'm going to go and find myself some untainted whiskey, adiós SDL 🥃🙄

María Montez married William McFeeters and became Marie McFeeters, 1932.
In 1932, when Maria was 19 years old, she met the Irish banker William MacFeeters and they fell in love despite their age difference (he was nearly 50), they got married the 28th November 1932 when she was 20 in Barahona and lived there for a long time. In the house where they lived she was the perfect hostess as she prepared many good dishes which she served to her guests and which she then taught her mother to prepare. Maria and McFeeters’ house was very close to Maria’s parents’ house.

[María África Gracia Vidal & William MacFeeters wedding certificate, from FamilySearch.org]
One year later of her marriage to William McFeeters, María’s dad, Isidoro Gracia García suddenly passes away although Maria made big efforts to bring a doctor to her parents home. She lived near her mother one more year but by 1934 Maria and William McFeeters change their residence into San Pedro, a little village in Dominican Republic. There, they meet some friends of McFeeters who invited her to the United States. With her husband’s permission, she went and stayed for quite some time, under the name of Maria McFeeters, in fact she was looking for work and worked there for two or three months and returned to San Pedro. Then she went to Barahona where she told his mother that she wanted to divorce McFeeters. There were rumors that Maria wanted to separate because she wanted to go live in the USA but another reason was that he could not have children and she wanted to be a mother. They separated in 1940 but remained friends forever.

Capítulo 2 & 3
- Mafin rewatch (Sueños de Libertad)
Watching the de la Reina siblings is a hoot. It's all so deliciously dysfunctional. Damian's three porcelain dolls, all dressed up and filled with generational trauma. How could that not be fun to watch?! I enjoy that Marta is the action oriented one of them. The boys bicker, but she refuses to play their game, instead tries for a solution and an action forward. It’s notable that both brothers turn to her as if her agreement, her word actually holds sway. They’re already making a point of this being a man’s world, but these men, even if it’s a means to play out each other, hang on her word and give it weight.
I’m kind of sad Jesús is such a right villain, because I enjoy him and Marta together. They play off each other well and you instantly get the nuances between them, making it super easy to envision how things were before Andrés return. The way they’ve kept that business afloat, probably stood side by side against their father on a number of occasions. I feel like they’ve kept each other alert, maybe a bit too guarded, but also with a sense of mutual respect despite all of the other muddled feelings of jealousy and resentment and old-fashioned sibling rivalry. In a world where Jesús wasn't such an evil man I think this could have been one of my favourite relationships on the show, if they'd taken the time to develop it more. Especially in the way she yields to him in the beginning and how her character growth comes into play later on.
Tumblr media
Carmen is the boss you want to have before she’s even anyone’s boss. The way she is straightforward and stands up to Marta for her own and her fellow workers sake and safety. I wish she was my workplace Union rep. She’s such a competent lady and I'd gladly line up behind. But why throw fucking caveman Tasio around her neck like a noose I’ll never understand. Though I’m getting ahead of myself, or ahead of the show at least.
Tumblr media
I mean seriously, what’s up with that opening credit?! Of all the characters, they get a two shot. In bed. The two of them who at this point in time have nothing to tie them together. A flimsy string of connection through fathers, through work. I wasn’t here from the start, but I assume they were shipped from day one? Granted by my arguing maybe Gaspar and Tasio should be shipped too, but at least those two aren't in bed together. And no, don't enlighten me if there are people who do ship them. Some things I'd rather go through life without knowing. This would be one of those.
Lol, Luz is so no-nonsense as she saves Damian's life. “Stop praying and let me stab him with a giant needle, you rich fools!”. Her and Begona sharing the medical field and a bit of empathy with each other is nice too. An ensemble cast that is balanced between men and women seldom leave room for a lot of female friendship, but this one does. I appreciate that.
Fina establishing from the very beginning what she thinks of men, and especially the fool ones like Carmen's deadbeat boyfriend. I feel you. And I am in love with the way she throughout all the episodes to date will be used as a way of voicing what the tired lesbian feminist in all of us wishes she could say, out loud.
Tumblr media
If trolls exist, you know like proper giant ones, the kind that can be mistaken for a mountain, covered in moss and trees and then suddenly just opens its eyes and stands up to stretch. You know the kind of trolls you think of when listening to Grieg's In the Mountain King's Hall - yeah those. I imagine if they existed then they'd sound exactly like a sickly Don Damian, like a melodic stone avalanche. That said I’ve never envision mountain trolls to sound Spanish before now. But maybe that’s on me.
Joaquín is a bit of an ass, calling Fina (and the rest of them) lazy - my eyes are narrowed. It wasn’t actually something he developed when he got on my shitlist by flirting with the secretary while having a cute as a button wife or pointing a gun at Marta. Apparently the assery was a pre-existing condition. It’s interesting though that Luis is the one talking about taking over the company, yet he still comes off as the decent one of them.
“You don’t notice the boys?”- Petra, you blonde little snake, don’t call my Fina out like that. Maybe we're allowed to know she's a lesbian, but don't flaunt it in front of the entire canteen like that. It’s kind of funny though how Fina is so clear about Luis not being her type, yet there are so many common denominators between him and Marta both in personality and in physicality (except of course the most important one in this case, their sex).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know he’s supposed to be one of the good guys, but honestly, Andrés is a bit of a douchebag, isn’t he?! Or maybe that's a bit harsh, but he comes across as pretty smarmy. He's like what the wall behind your stove would be if anthropomorphised, kind of greasy, kind of sticky and in constant need of being hosed down. But yay for not letting the roof drop on your employees, I guess.

When Fina almost spilled the beans in front of Digna, I was so nervous for her. Once again hiding the truth of who she is, not being able to express her guilt freely to Digna, who is like a mother to her, is pulling her down even further. I wonder what they’re telling everyone, that Marta found Isidro herself or that Fina got a ride with her to visit Isidro, because if she has to lie about that, too, no wonder she’s in this state. She can’t look for a shoulder to cry on in that house since she needs to keep up appearances and act like she’s all alone in this world, actually becoming so in practice in front of the family.
She doesn’t seem to be feeling very receptive to the comfort Marta offers when they’re alone either, and I’m afraid she’ll try to pull away from their relationship, resent their house and what it represents, and Marta won’t know how to bridge the gap opening between them.
I’m also worried about Digna finding out that Marta and Fina are together. I’ve always hoped that realising Marta was another victim of Jesús and seeing her with Fina would make her take Marta under her wing, but now the complete opposite seems more likely. Digna promised Isidro she would protect Fina as if she were her own child, and when she knows about their relationship, she will try to save Fina from Marta since she’s a De la Reina. If Fina has found her way back to Marta by then, everything will be fine, maybe Fina can plead Marta’s case and make Digna see the error of her ways. But if Fina is still keeping her distance, then the curva is going to be hell.

Jesús de la Reina is the most entertaining villain. I so look forward to the scenes between him and Marta. Their relationship is genuinely fascinating and you can tell he actually respects her, in a rival sibling way (very realistic imo), unlike boring Andrés.
Still cackling about « hermanita » and «  anhelos y magdalenas ».

XXIII DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO (AÑO B)
Leccionario
Primera lectura
Is 35, 4-7a
“Los oídos de los sordos se abrirán, y cantará la lengua del mudo”
Lectura del libro de Isaías.
Decid a los inquietos:
«Sed fuertes, no temáis.
¡He aquí vuestro Dios! Llega el desquite,
la retribución de Dios.
Viene en persona y os salvará».
Entonces se despegarán los ojos de los ciegos,
los oídos de los sordos se abrirán;
entonces saltará el cojo como un ciervo
y cantará la lengua del mudo,
porque han brotado aguas en el desierto
y corrientes en la estepa.
El páramo se convertirá en estanque,
el suelo sediento en manantial.
Palabra de Dios.
Salmo responsorial
Sal 145, 6c-7. 8-9a. 9bc-10 (R.: 1b)
Aleluya
Cf. Mt 4, 23
R. Aleluya, aleluya, aleluya.
V. Jesús proclamaba el evangelio del reino,
y curaba toda dolencia del pueblo.
R. Aleluya, aleluya, aleluya.
Evangelio
Mc 7, 31-37

Marta: Tell her to come in. Isabel: Right away. Fina: Well, well, well, Marta! The private sale was a total success! You should have seen Carmen; she was walking right up to the clients as they passed through the door. Marta: I know, Astrid Madariaga just called me, all excited, to tell me about it. Fina: They cleared everything out, huh? Marta: What great news! Fina: And why didn’t you come by? I’ve been waiting for you all afternoon. Marta: Because I had to take over my new position. Fina: What new position? Marta: You’re looking at the new director of Perfumerías de la Reina. Fina: What?! Are you serious? Marta: Yes! Fina: What?! Marta: My father removed Jesús and offered it to me. It all happened so fast, which is why I couldn’t tell you before.
Fina: But, but congratulations, right?! Congratulations! What wonderful news, honestly! Because... because it’s good news, right? Marta: Yes, yes, yes. I’m on cloud nine. And for my father to have trusted me... Fina: But does that mean...? Marta: That we’re smoothing things over. Fina: Oh my God, Marta! You have no idea how much you deserve all of this, truly. You’ve fought so hard to get here. You’ve had to break down walls that your brothers, just by being men, can’t even imagine. Marta: I won’t deny that. Fina: And... and what about Barcelona? Is the move still on? Because I doubt your brother will take long to expose those photographs if you don’t step down from the position. Marta: That’s not going to happen. Fina: Why? Marta: Because my father destroyed the negatives. Fina: Are we out of danger? Marta: The nightmare is over. Jesús can’t hurt us.
—Next scene—
Marta: We no longer have to run, and you can stay by your father’s side until his last breath. That’s what you wanted, right? Fina: Yes, yes, yes. Marta: Does that sound good to you...? Fina: Of course, of course it sounds good to me. I felt so guilty about having to leave him. Marta: Well, now nothing and no one will stop us from continuing our lives here. In fact, now with my new position, I’ll make sure no one bothers us in the colony. What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy? Fina: Yes, of course. Of course I’m happy. I’m really happy... But in Barcelona, we were going to live together in the same house and... that’s it, it’s fine! I was excited about it, but it’s fine. Marta: Fina... Fina: No, don’t “Fina” me, Marta. You just said it yourself. Here, we’ll each go back to our own lives, each in our own place. Marta: We’ll find a way. Just last night you were sleeping at my place. Fina: Your place, but in the downstairs rooms with my father, because I thought those were the last days I was going to spend with him. Marta: We’ll figure it out, hm? The important thing now is that you and I are safe. Fina: We’ve really lifted a heavy weight off our shoulders, haven’t we? Marta: I would’ve never forgiven myself if something had happened to you because of my brother.
