The 2018 Trade Deadline Extravaganza

That was fun. The 2018 trade deadline was an absolute roller coaster. Trades and trades galore. So, what to make of all of it? Here’s what I think of what went down. 

Cavs Retool: So, what the hell just happened? Koby Altman just got rid of more staff workers than Ari Gold merging with TMA. Through the prism of the Kyrie Irving trade of the summer, the Cavs still are not the team they could be with him. But man did they do their best of a bad situation. Cleveland needed a major overhaul and made one. Isaiah Thomas is a ball dominant guard that Brad Stevens, along with the work Isaiah put in, managed to help him thrive all the way to finishing 5th in MVP voting, but that could not happen in Cleveland coming off his hip injury and taking the ball out of LeBron’s hands. Continuing to air out Cleveland’s dirty laundry in the media only made things worse. Getting a secondary scorer in Clarkson who can play off the ball some should help the Cavs more than Isaiah Thomas would. George Hill and Rodney Hood are both players who can play off the ball and create off the dribble too, and bring a defensive presence Cleveland could only dream Isaiah, Rose, Wade and Shumpert, could bring. Larry Nance Jr. will bring an energy and defensive edge the Cavs are not getting right now from Tristan Thompson. The Cavs brought in a renowned energy and versatility to their team all while ridding themselves of the clutter of specialist players like Wade, Rose, Crowder and Shumpert, while simultaneously preserving that coveted Nets pick. Will this trade catapult them over the Warriors. No, likely not. But this helps them become more competitive to keep their crown of the Eastern Conference. It will take time for this team to gel, especially with Love injured until April. It isn’t a lock they make the Finals again, but they definitely got better and increased their odds of doing so, sending a message to LeBron that they want to maximize their window with him. And even if LeBron walks, the Cavs have stashed their roster with more young players in Clarkson, Nance and Hood (though will have to fork up big money to Hood this offseason) along with whoever they select with that Nets pick. Give Koby Altman a lot of credit.

Lakers cap room: Hey did you guys know the Lakers wanted to create money for 2 max contracts this summer? Well, it looked like the Lakers ‘recalibration’ for 2019 was a trap (read that in your best Admiral Akbar voice)! Trading Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance and the $14 million they were owed in 2018 (and 2019) was one of the last steps the Lakers needed to get to that threshold. Now, does that mean the Lakers are going to get one or two of the likes of LeBron James, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Jimmy Butler, etc? No, but it does get the Lakers firmly in the game, without sacrificing their main core that includes Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Josh (Barkley) Hart and Julius Randle. Not only do they keep those guys, but they get an extra first round pick in the process. The Lakers scouting department has found some great finds in those late 1st round picks and 2nd round picks. Just think of what they just traded: Jordan Clarkson, a 2nd round pick they bought from the Wizards in 2014, and Larry Nance Jr., a 1st round pick they essentially bought from the Rockets for eating Jeremy Lin’s expiring contract. Kyle Kuzma was drafted at 27, Josh Hart was drafted at 30 and both have made big strides in the Lakers rotation this season. The Lakers are still rebuilding and gathering as many assets as they can. Not only did they manage to nab one in the Cavaliers’ 1st round pick this season, but also have the capability to chase not one, but 2 free agents they need to get to contention. They’ve been trying to trade Clarkson (and Randle and Nance) all year long, and executed the exact trade they sought to make. Rob Pelinka did his job. You’re up, Magic (just do it without tampering, please).

No East Moves? So the Cavs blew up 40% of their team, but no meaningful moves were made by the other Eastern contenders outside of the Celtics signing C Greg Monroe. Perhaps Malachi Richardson becomes a factor in Toronto, but I’m not counting on that yet. With Tyreke Evans and DeAndre Jordan being floated as possibilities for multiple teams in the East along with other ancillary role players who can help, Boston, Toronto nor Washington made a deal. Did they let an opportunity slip? Maybe not. Boston did add another scoring punch in Monroe and held onto Marcus Smart. Toronto already can go about 10 deep and not lose a step, critical in the playoffs. Washington will get John Wall back and are in the midst of a surge, winning 5 of their last 6. Toronto and Boston are still better than the Cavs in the meantime, and Washington and Miami could’ve work their way into the mix with a deal. Will that change in April and May when the Cavs learn the tendencies of their new teammates? We’ll see.

Buy Low Point Guards (Isaiah/Hill/Mudiay/Elf): Maybe it’s just me, but Isaiah Thomas is still a good player. It doesn’t help he’s still shaking off the kinks of a major knee injury. Nonetheless, Thomas fit in in Cleveland about as well as a crocodile in an alligator rally. He’s only shooting roughly 47% from less than 5 feet, and 29.3% on catch and shoot 3s per NBA.com. If he isn’t scoring efficiently, he’s not worth playing with his defensive capabilities, or lack thereof. More possessions with Isaiah shooting misses is less possessions for LeBron to create, and he didn’t bring the requisite spacing needed to play with LeBron. That compounded the locker room issues he brought, where he, to quote on Kanye West, was talking to the media like it’s you and me. Now in Los Angeles, Lonzo Ball will still start, but does not need the ball as much as LeBron does and can defend the quicker point guards Isaiah will face night-to-night. It will be tricky with Brandon Ingram playing well as the de-facto point guard in this winning surge the Lakers are on right now, but Isaiah should be able to fit in better with this younger, more athletic Laker team that can play to his strengths and shield his weaknesses a little better than Cleveland could.

George Hill is not Kyrie Irving. He is not the Isaiah Thomas of last season. But, he is about as well a replacement Cleveland could realistically get. He has the length and athleticism to not just guard, but put pressure on opposing guards and wings to go with plenty of playoff experience. The fit should be cleaner too. He currently leads the league, the entirely league, in 3 point percentage at 45.3%, and is shooting 47.1% on catch-and-shoot 3s, per NBA.com. Hill also fits in as a more than serviceable secondary ball hander and playmaker. The chemistry he and Rodney Hood had in Utah should surely translate over onto Cleveland. While his defense has not been as staunch this season (90th in ESPN’s RPM, 1 spot above Isaiah Thomas), that speaks more to a lackluster effort playing on a rebuilding that doesn’t understand all the little nuances of NBA defense. Playing on a championship contender should rejuvenate Hill and bring out the player from San Antonio, Indiana and Utah.

Perhaps the most intriguing non-Cleveland trade made today was the New York Knicks acquiring Emmanuel Mudiay from Denver in a 3 team trade, giving up Doug McDermott for him. While benefiting financially, getting a season and a half of Mudiay on a rookie scale contract for McDermott’s expiring contract, it is a great buy-low opportunity. Mudiay’s seen an increase in field goal and 3 point field goal percentage and his scoring per 36 minutes is a career high 17.2, per Basketball-Reference. He has generally played with a bit more of a feel at a slower pace, critical for young point guards. Denver is in win now mode and Devin Harris should help in that regard, especially defense. But, it takes time for point guards to grow in the NBA, much like young quarterbacks in the NFL. It varies for when it ‘clicks’ for each player, and it didn’t seem like Denver was the place it would click for Mudiay with Jamal Murray’s emergence. After Kristaps Porzingis’ horrific ACL injury this week, it doesn’t hurt the Knicks to find out what they could have in Mudiay and give him and Frank Ntilikina the keys to the car this season to grow during the 2nd half of the season. Keep an eye on Emmanuel Mudiay in New York.

Plenty of players have moved on from the wasteland that is Orlando to see success everywhere (Victor Oladipo and Shabazz Napier, to name a couple). Could the same be said for Elfrid ‘The Weeknd’ Payton? Perhaps. Spacing could be jammed with Josh Jackson another ballhandler and playmaker on the floor. At the very least, Payton is capable of defending opposing teams’ best perimeter playmaker and ease that responsibility off of Devin Booker. After trading Eric Bledsoe, the Suns did not have another starting-caliber Point Guard on the roster. Tyler Ulis is a more than capable backup, but overmatched as a starter. Is Elfrid Payton the future Point Guard for the Suns? I don’t think even they know the answer to that. But with 3 2nd Round Picks this upcoming draft, giving one up for a player who fills a role and will be re-attainable this summer as a restricted free agent is a nice bet for the Suns to take.

Those big-cuffed two-colour shirts get the ladies at the assisted-living centre master-baking all night. He’s sexual chocolate, a perfectly risen love fondant with a gooey middle and exacting pastry standards that explode your nan’s ovaries at the climax of every GBBO. The trouble with arousing the elderly, of course, is that increased heart rates can prove fatal. In that sense, Hollywood is more of a ladykiller than Edmund Kemper.

Can we just put an end to footballers dressing themselves? Seeing as they’re starved of any meaningful childhood and put straight to task at the first sniff of talent, it stands to reason that they’re going to shop like giant, overpaid toddlers. They simply don’t know any better. But Neymar is a special case. Anime hair, “bling”, Fashion-Week posturing and streetwear done worse than frankly anyone else alive.

3. Chris Martin

“May all your troubles soon be gone,” wrote Coldplay in their recent Christmas hit. Indeed, it is important at this time of year to spare a thought for the less fortunate. Indigent, wretched and prone to rapacious and incomprehensible wailing due to a lack of societal worth, Chris Martin nonetheless manages to do his charitable bit. He looks like an animated Topman mannequin from 2005, which was the last time anyone else wore a long-sleeve top under a T-shirt.

We can all hope to look as good as Ben Affleck when we let ourselves go. Despite his estimated net worth of $105 million, he dresses like a recently divorced dad who now lives alone with a set of mismatched cutlery and one plate.

Fantasy Basketball position tiers: Point guard values for 2017-18

Before we get into the 2017-18 point guard tiers, here are a few notes to keep in mind:

Overall, the tiers cover players projected to rank roughly among the top 120 overall. Within each tier, players are generally listed in the order in which they should be drafted. Of course, come draft night, team construction and roster constraints must be take into account.

Unless otherwise noted, players are listed only within the positions at which they are currently eligible in Yahoo Fantasy Basketball leagues. Tiers and season rankings are tailored to nine-category league settings.

Most players are ranked within the tiers at more than one position, rather than only their primary position, which is oftentimes arbitrary. Players who do not have multiple-position eligibility are denoted with an asterisk. 

[Positional tiers: PGs | SGs | SFs | PFs | Cs]

Tier I: Possible No. 1 Overall Picks

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks Stephen Curry, Warriors James Harden, Rockets Russell Westbrook, Thunder*

Curry has been a top-15 player every year since he entered the league, and a top-four guy in each of the past five seasons. Harden and Westbrook both turn the ball over at high rates, but both have also been top-five players in eight-category settings over the past three seasons.

Of the four, Westbrook is the only one eligible at point guard only. Coming off of one of the best individual seasons in NBA history, a regression seems likely, though that could still mean double-digit assist production.

Currently, Antetokounmpo is only eligible at power forward and small forward, but the probability that he adds point guard eligibility as the season goes on means he warrants inclusion here, too.

Tier II: First-Round Values

Damian Lillard, Trail Blazers* John Wall, Wizards*

Though not candidates for the first overall pick, both of these players are great options for managers selecting late in the first round. Both are strong across almost every category, and have the ability to rank among the league leaders in one specific category – threes for Lillard, assists for Wall. Wall is a high-turnover player better-suited to eight-category play, but he is still an excellent option in nine-category settings.

Tier III: Elite Options

Chris Paul, Clippers Kyle Lowry, Raptors* Kyrie Irving, Celtics

These stars should not be taken in the first round, but they are still elite fantasy options who can carry a roster.

Paul and Lowry were both first-round values last season, but they have lengthy injury histories that should knock them out of consideration for teams’ first selections. Paul could suffer from joining another ball-dominant guard in Harden, but both players are elite spot-up shooters, and their minutes will likely be staggered to ensure one is handling the ball at almost all times.

Lowry is unlikely to beat out the 37.4 minutes per game he averaged in 2016-17, but the Raptors lost backcourt depth this offseason, so he’s also unlikely to suffer a significant drop.

Irving’s injury history is similarly checkered, and it has been years since he posted first-round value, but his trade to the Celtics provides a boost in value. Irving’s usage rate with LeBron James off the court was 44.5 percent last season, and he figures to be the primary offensive option for the Celtics.

Tier IV: Borderline All-Stars

C.J. McCollum, Trail Blazers Isaiah Thomas, Cavaliers* Kemba Walker, Hornets* Mike Conley, Grizzlies*

Conley and Walker are two of the most underrated, under-appreciated players in the league. That helps savvy fantasy managers, since it is a big reason why these reliable studs are available in late third or early fourth rounds.

Thomas’s perceived value is likely to fall now that he’s a secondary offensive threat for the Cavaliers, as opposed to being the primary load-bearer for the Celtics. Thomas’ value should rightly fall, but the perceived drop is likely to be larger than warranted. McCollum lives largely in Lillard’s shadow, but the gap between the two Blazers stars has narrowed over the last two seasons.

Tier V: High-Quality Starters

Eric Bledsoe, Suns Jeff Teague, Timberwolves* Jrue Holiday, Pelicans Goran Dragic, Heat

Not only is this tier less-talented than the one above it, but there is something problematic about each of these players’ settings that could hurt their fantasy value. Holiday will likely have to spend a lot of time playing out of position in the wake of the Rajon Rondo signing, Dragic is now 31, and if Tyler Johnson and Josh Richardson are healthy, his minutes could decrease.

Bledsoe is another player with a lengthy injury history, and backup Tyler Ulis showed flashes that he might be talented enough to ease Bledsoe’s workload in what will probably be another lottery season. Teague’s assist totals could increase playing with three All-Star-caliber talents, but he’ll probably have to give up some touches and shot attempts in the process.

Tier VI: High Upside, Sturdy Floors

Avery Bradley, Pistons Zach LaVine, Bulls Ricky Rubio, Jazz* Patrick Beverley, Clippers Victor Oladipo, Pacers D’Angelo Russell, Nets Jeremy Lin, Nets Dennis Smith, Jr., Mavericks*

When drafting a bottom-half fantasy starter, it’s comforting to feel like the player will remain a roster mainstay throughout the season, even if they don’t deliver on their more optimistic projections. These players provide that reassuring floor.

With that in mind, LaVine probably has the lowest floor of the group, given that he’ll miss a chunk of the season after tearing his ACL. But once he returns, he could be the No. 1 option for the lottery-bound Bulls.

As a rookie, it’s not totally fair to say Smith has an overly high floor, as rookies are inherently risky fantasy options. That said, Smith is by far the most talented point guard in Dallas, and he’s, without question, the first rookie worth taking in standard redraft leagues.

Tier VII: High-Risk, High-Reward

George Hill, Kings Elfrid Payton, Magic* Rajon Rondo, Pelicans* Dennis Schroder, Hawks* Lonzo Ball, Lakers* Markelle Fultz, 76ers* Ben Simmons, 76ers

Again, rookies are risky. But Ball, Fultz, and Simmons, who could end up with point guard eligibility, are dynamic options who have potential to take the fantasy world by storm. All three have clear paths to major roles right way and should provide reasonable value in multiple categories.

Meanwhile, Schroder and Payton should play big minutes on bad teams, with Schroder looking like he’ll be the Hawks’ No. 1 option. Always a wild card, Rondo is an odd fit playing alongside Holiday, and it’s hard to anticipate which version of Rondo will show up – the top-50 player in Sacramento, or the fantasy bust in Chicago and Dallas. Err on the side of caution.

Tier VIII: Flawed Fantasy Starters

Dwyane Wade, Bulls Malcolm Brogdon, Bucks Seth Curry, Mavericks Tyler Johnson, Heat Marcus Smart, Celtics* Darren Collison, Pacers Reggie Jackson, Pistons

Smart is perhaps the steadiest player in this tier, but his atrocious field goal percentage means he could harm some teams as much as he could help others. Boston parting ways with Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder should give Smart a boost, but he’ll face stiff competition from Terry Rozier and Jaylen Brown, as well as coveted rookie Jayson Tatum.

Tier IX: Low-end Roster Fillers

Jamal Murray, Nuggets De’Aaron Fox, Kings* Jordan Clarkson, Lakers Ish Smith, Pistons Lou Williams, Clippers Frank Ntilikina, Knicks*

Murray could easily play his way into a higher tier, but his numbers weren’t as encouraging as his overall play as a rookie. The Kentucky product had some memorable performances but shot just 40.4 percent from the floor and 33.4 percent from three. If he can become more efficient and spend more time on the ball, Murray could be a late-round steal.

Dose: Tyreke Evans Breaks Out

We were missing a lot of studs on Thursday night including Anthony Davis, Jimmy Butler and Kristaps Porzingis, but there was still a lot of great action and Nikola Jokic, Tyreke Evans, Terrence Jones, Devin Booker and Boban Marjanovic more than made up for their absences with some incredible performances. There was only one injury concern after the games started as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope tweaked his left shoulder, but let’s go ahead and dive right into the action. Nuggets 140, Pacers 112

This was the only game of the week for both the Nuggets and Pacers, so most of these guys with the exception of Nikola Jokic, Paul George and Myles Turner were not in weekly lineups. The Pacers were on a five-game winning streak coming into this one, while the Nuggets had lost five straight. 

Jokic played through an illness and had one of the lines of the night with a team-high 22 points to go with 10 rebounds, seven assists, one steal, one block and two triples, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line. If you weathered the storm at the beginning of the season, Jokic is now rewarding his owners with top-20 value over the last month. He will be a fantasy superstar the rest of the way. Wilson Chandler also played through an illness with 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and two treys, while Danilo Gallinari battled through ankle soreness on his way to 18 points. All three players now have a full three days to rest before Monday’s game. Gary Harris’ groin might be an issue for a while, but the time off this week clearly helped. He finished with 16 points, six assists, five rebounds with a steal and triple, so be ready to pick him up before a four-game Week 13. Kenneth Faried played well with 15 points and nine rebounds in 16 minutes, but similar to Jusuf Nurkic (eight minutes), he really needs a trade to hold value. 

Paul George was a letdown for the Pacers with just 10 points on 2-of-12 shooting, but he did salvage his line with four steals and a couple treys. Jeff Teague has been very consistent lately and had 14 points with nine assists, but Thaddeus Young and Myles Turner only combined for a total of 13 points and 10 rebounds. C.J. Miles had one of his trademark explosions off the bench with 20 points and six treys, but I’m not interested unless his minutes go up. 

Pelicans 104, Nets 95

Anthony Davis (left hip) missed his third game of the season on Thursday, but it’s just a bruise and he’s only dealing with some soreness. I would expect him to return on Saturday vs. the Bulls, but nothing is a guarantee when you’re talking about Davis. Terrence Jones drew the start in his absence and predictably went off for 24 points and 12 rebounds in 38 minutes with one assist, one steal and a block, but he will likely cool off when Davis is healthy because coach Alvin Gentry wants Dante Cunningham in there to score two points with one rebound in 30 minutes. All kidding aside, Jones has great upside and is one of the best handcuffs/stashes in fantasy given Davis’ durability issues. 

Jrue Holiday was hot with 21 points, four triples, four assists and two steals, while Solomon Hill had one of the flukiest lines of the night with 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and a pair of triples and steals. Ignore him. The big story of the night was that Tyreke Evans broke out with season highs in minutes (28) and points (29), shooting 10-of-15 from the field and 7-of-7 from the line with four rebounds, three assists, four steals, one block and a couple 3-pointers. I’ve been saying this since he returned, but make sure Evans is owned in all leagues. He will be a monster if he’s cleared for 30 minutes soon. This is a player who averaged 15-7-5 last season despite playing at less than 100 percent. 

There’s not much to talk about regarding the Nets, but it’s worth noting that Brook Lopez (20 points, six rebounds), Trevor Booker (eight points, 12 rebounds, four assists) and Bojan Bogdanovic (10 points, two triples) are all candidates to rest on the second night of a back-to-back set on Friday in Toronto. Booker returned from a hip injury tonight and seemed fine, but Isaiah Whitehead left the game with a knee sprain and wasn’t able to return. Even though Spencer Dinwiddie (zero points, four assists) will likely start with Jeremy Lin (hamstring) still out, my money is on Sean Kilpatrick (18 points, seven rebounds, three triples) to benefit the most. Promising rookie Caris LeVert had another encouraging game with 10 points, three rebounds, one assist, two steals and a triple in 25 minutes, and it’s only a matter of time before he’s unleashed. He should be at or near the top of your watch list in standard leagues, but I’ve already added him in most of mine because I’ve got the LeVert fever. 

Knicks 104, Bulls 89

Kristaps Porzingis (Achilles) was held out of Thursday’s game with the same Achilles issue that sidelined him for three games last week. He hasn’t looked right lately, but he does get a couple days to rest before Sunday’s game vs. the Raptors. Lance Thomas drew the start and scored four points, but he’s not a reliable fantasy option in any format. Mindaugas Kuzminskas is a decent flier in very deep leagues after his best game of the season with 19 points in 30 minutes with four rebounds, one assist, two steals, one block and two triples. He’s had some nice moments this season, but I’m in no rush to add him with Porzingis considered day-to-day. 

Carmelo Anthony (23 points, nine rebounds, six assists) and Derrick Rose (17 points, three assists) are going to see a bump in value if Porzingis misses more time, as Melo’s usage rate rises from 26.8 to 32.9 with Porzingis off the court, while Rose’s offensive rating rises from 106.8 to 109.8. Assuming Rose doesn’t pull another Ferris Bueller, he’s still worth owning in most leagues. Joakim Noah double-doubled in 27 minutes, while Kyle O’Quinn had his second great game in a row with 12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and four blocks. KOQ has been a fantasy tease all season, but I’d rather take a flier on him than Noah. 

Jimmy Butler (illness) missed his second game in a row on Thursday, but he is feeling better and is expected to return for the final two games of Week 12. Dwayne Wade returned from a day of rest and scored 22 points, but don’t be surprised if he’s held out of one game of the upcoming back-to-back set on Saturday and Sunday. Coach Fred Hoiberg said that Rajon Rondo is going to be the sixth man moving forward, but his performance on Friday didn’t inspire much confidence with four points on 2-of-9 shooting with eight assists. I still think the Bulls trade or waive him with the way their season is falling apart. 

Spurs 134, Lakers 94

Kawhi Leonard led the Spurs with 31 points, two steals and three triples, while Pau Gasol scored 22 points on a perfect 9-of-9 shooting in his “revenge game.” LaMarcus Aldridge returned from an illness and scored 13 points in 24 minutes, but obviously didn’t need to play much in the blowout. Rookie Dejounte Murray played 10 minutes in the blowout and it’s easy to see why the Spurs are so excited about his potential. He finished with 10 points, two assists and two triples and is a fine stash in dynasty leagues for when he inevitably takes Tony Parker’s spot in a year or two. 

Only one Lakers starter played well and that was Julius Randle, as he finished with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists. D’Angelo Russell (nine points on 4-of-13 FGs) and Nick Young (eight points) were both quiet, while Jordan Clarkson and Lou Williams could only muster up a combined 24 points off the bench. We finally got a decent look at intriguing rookie Ivica Zubac who finished with eight points, four rebounds, two steals and a block in 15 minutes, but we should see a lot more of him down the stretch at the expense of Timofey Mozgov with the Lakers sliding in the standings. 

Mavericks 113, Suns 108

Andrew Bogut was out with a hamstring strain, but Dirk Nowitzki slid over to center and scored 18 points with six rebounds and three triples in 30 minutes. That was fun, but don’t expect that workload going forward. Harrison Barnes continued his phenomenal season with 22 points, five assists and a full line, while Deron Williams lit up the Suns for 23 points, 12 assists and four triples. Roll with him while he’s healthy. Seth Curry moved into the starting lineup and had 12 points with three steals and three 3-pointers, and he still looks poised to have a strong finish to the season with several Mavs expected to be either traded or eventually shut down. Dwight Powell’s upside is obvious and he had 10 points with five rebounds and a pair of blocks and steals in just 15 minutes, but the playing time will eventually go up. He’s just a stash for now. 

Devin Booker matched his career high with 39 points in the loss, setting a franchise record with 28 points alone in the fourth quarter. He also had six 3-pointers with three assists, and he actually had an efficient shooting night (14-of-20 FGs) to make up for his seven turnovers. It looks like he has taken another step with 27+ points in three out of his last four games. Tyson Chandler was a beast with 14 points and 19 rebounds, but the Suns are likely going to trade him which will hurt his value. Brandon Knight (19 minutes) is still in the doghouse and needs a trade in order to have value again, while T.J. Warren continued to frustrate owners with just eight points in 28 minutes. His incredible start to the season seems like a distant memory, but I’d hold onto him. If you’re in a dynasty or keeper league, do yourself a favor and make sure Marquese Chriss (13 points, three triples) is owned. He’s so raw right now, but he was built for fantasy. 

Warriors 127, Pistons 107

The Warriors are a four-man show in fantasy, so there were no real fantasy implications as usual. Kevin Durant scored 25 with nine assists, six rebounds and three steals, while Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 47 points and seven 3-pointers. Draymond Green added 13 assists and nine rebounds. 

Marcus Morris led the Pistons with 21 points, Tobias Harris scored 18 and Andre Drummond double-doubled as usual in 27 minutes. Boban Marjanovic was impressive with 13 points, 11 rebounds and two assists in just 16 minutes, and coach Stan Van Gundy said after the game that he will roll with Boban as his backup center going forward. He will never take off with Andre Drummond healthy, but Boban is one of the best per-minute bigs in the league — he has per-36 minute averages of 19.3 points, 16.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks. I’m picking him up in deep leagues and you should do the same. 

The Pistons caught a bad break when Kentavious Caldwell-Pope left the game with a shoulder injury after just four minutes, but X-rays were negative. While the Pistons are calling it a sore left shoulder for now, he’s scheduled for an MRI on Friday. If he misses time, keep an eye on Stanley Johnson after the second-year forward logged 38 minutes with eight points, three assists, two rebounds, one block and two triples.
