Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (720): Wed 6th Mar 2024
I decided that I would spend today bashing out a first draft of a sitcom script for entry into the Sitcommission competition. John Swartzwelder the legendary writer of The Simpsons offers aspiring comedy writers the advice to get your first draft done as quick as you can, preferably in the one day. He says not to worry about how uneventful and unfunny it is because all that matters is getting that first draft done because then on the second day you can start the re-writing process which he says is much easier. Graham Linehan offers another superb pointer which is to have all your different ideas on individual cards and then play around with them, seeing if any of the ideas match up and could potential merge into one bigger idea. He says this way is much better than sitting at your desk and writing out the whole plot in order and constantly trying to figure out what comes next in the story. I took both of these tips on board and started work after a few cups of tea and a few dozen YouTube videos that I’ve seen a million times before. I’ve already got the premise for the sitcom ready as I have written several scripts of a sitcom that I didn’t enter into the competition because I didn’t think they were ready or because they didn’t quite fit the competition’s silly rules and guidelines. The sitcom will be about a brother and sister named Sonny and Val who work at a youth club despite hating children and their constant plans to get back to their former lives of being a weatherman and a TV producer respectfully. Each episode will feature another character whose name and profession changes every week similar to The Red Guy from Cow and Chicken. The plot of the episode I’ve come up with after whole day of “writing” is Sonny and Val trying to gain re-entry to a popular bar that they have been banned from by charming the owners widower. I've finished the script and as expected although there are some highlights it's not very good as a whole but as Linehan says this is to be expected and the poor nature of every first draft is that puts a lot of writers off starting something. Tomorrow I'll begin the editing process to put in better jokes and since I now what joes are going to happen later in the script I'lll go back and sow the seeds of those jokes in the first part of the story so that the payoff means more when it arrives. I can't deny I thought that it would be agony getting this thing together but I've actually had a very enjoyable time today.
I read about the largest pair of jeans that has even been made, 214 feet made by a department store in Peru. When I say I read about it I mean I read that there is one, I'm not suggesting that the giant pair of jeans has had a biography written about it. I've said before that I'm constantly jumping to the conclusion that everything no matter how innocent looking actually has something sinister behind it and when I saw these jeans I immediately thought that the reason they've made them is because there's a lab in Peru that's attempting to genetically engineer a 214 foot Jeremy Clarkson. You may think that's a ridiculous thing to think (unless David Icke reads this blog) but I think that once the government realizes that the Rwanda planes are never going to get off the ground they will start to look for alternatives to keep immigrants out and what could be a more imposing deterrent than paddling towards Dover and seeing a colossal Jeremy Clarkson sat on the White Cliffs? Nothing that's what
Watched an episode of Bill Bailey's new show Perfect Pub Walks where he goes for a long walk with another celebrity. This episode featured Paul Merton walking with Bill across the Dorset coast and was very enjoyable. There are quite a few of these kinds of shows that highlight the beauty of every day life and the therapeutic healing power of nature. Sometimes you need shows like this to remind you that life can pass you buy while you're worrying about your next car upgrade or how many new followers you've acquired on social media this week or your city being attacked by a 214 foot Jeremy Clarkson. If this was my show then it probably wouldn't be as enjoyable because the only way I can relax these days is to imagine torturing to death everybody who's ever besmirched me and I can't imagine there would be any celebrity will to sign up to a TV show where this is the premise….maybe Justin Lee Collins, I mean he's got to have run out of money at this stage. It's good to see that Paul has retained his legendary quick wit even as he approaches seventy. Thirty years ago he was rightly considered to be one of the countries funniest men and while I acknowledge that there have been other contenders to his crown notably Sean Lock, David Mitchell, Ross Noble and not James Corden but for me Merton will always be the master. There's a great moment where Paul looks out at the idyllic dandelion fields with the ocean glistening in the foreground and comments “I remember when this was all factories”.

HOW YOU CAN BOOST YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS If there was one way that you could greatly increase your chances of becoming successful and wealthy you would take it right? You would think so but when you ask most people what the last book they read was they cannot give you an answer. Reading, primarily non-fiction, is a habit of the vast majority of successful business people, leaders and millionaires so why are most people so adverse to it? The most common reason that you will hear, and possibly use, is “I am too busy to read.” Rubbish. If I can work a full-time job, look after our four kids with my wife, clean the house, create the Work Smart Show podcast and blog - along with another podcast coming soon - and still find time then anyone can. Undoubtedly your answer at this point is “but I also...” but that doesn’t matter because there will be something you could also do. Reading, the same as anything in life, needs to be prioritized and possibly even planned or it will not happen. Personally I started getting up half an hour early in the morning, several months ago, to allow more time in my day and I take time to visit the library and read during my lunch break from work at least twice a week. This means it’s harder to avoid or forget and I never regret taking time to read. Currently I am reading a book about the internet, how it practically works and the issues it is creating and solving in the world. Before this was a biography of the most recent CEO of Coca Cola, Neville Isdell, which outlined the creation of the company and brand that is so well known as well as his youth in Africa. Further back was a book examining whether leaders are created in the heat of the moment or take actions based on their previous experience and comparing notable historical leaders and the moments that made them iconic. Before this I read a run of Seth Godin and Gary Vee’s books. Every single one of these books have taught me a vast amount about a huge variety of things. From the list above I learnt about African apartheid from an insider perspective, the branding lessons learned by Coca-Cola, the amazing story of the Louisiana Purchase, what makes Social Media a must for business and exactly how this blog got from my computer to your screen. I understand my interests are almost certainly different than yours but the point is that we can all stand to learn something especially if it ups our chances of success and wealth. On that front I highly recommend Dave Ramsey's, The Total Money Makeover, but why wouldn’t you pick up a book? Make that your challenge this year, to pick up a book, any book and just give it a read. If it needs to be a Jeremy Clarkson book just to keep you interested at first then so be it but get involved. Have your say on Twitter, Facebook, Anchor, Tumblr, Minds or Medium! Listen and download our Work Smart Show Podcast hosted by Access Manawatu!

1, 8, 9, 10, 50. :D
Enough questions? Calm down! Okay….
1: What was the first fandom you got involved with? and 8: How did you get involved in your latest fandom? can be answered in one:
I’d have to say the RE7 fandom is the only one I’ve actually had any involvement in. I’ve always just bumbled along on my own and kept my little daydreams to myself before, whatever I was into. It was the craving for more Lucas Baker content that brought me back to Tumblr and all you lovely deviants….. I followed @ivannesque from instagram after seeing her Lucas art, and the rest is history!
9: What are the best things about your current fandom?
The perverted sweethearts I’ve befriended, tbqfh. Lovely, talented, supportive, twisted, humorous angels. No judgement. No shame. I can be as crass as I like, and often am. And the understanding about stuff that I can’t talk to my rl friends about! It’s freedom.
10: Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?
Outlast atm. I love Outlast and the Whistleblower dlc but for some reason can’t quite engage with Outlast II. I’ve thought about writing some myself - smut ofc - but I’d be up against some hardcore veterans so it’s a bit intimidating…
50: How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?
I’ve always written, right from when I was little. My oldest surviving work is a poem dictated to my mother when I was 5.My early attempts were adventures involving me and my friends, then I moved onto horror. My friends would read my efforts.I wrote a few Dr Who fics with a friend over 30 years ago, but that was just embarrassing. In my 20s I wrote a monthly magazine for my friends called Guys With Pies. It was hilarious, if I say so myself. Pornography and pastry related content. Then a couple of years ago, after starting about 6 horror shorts and not finishing them, a friend and I had a conversation about the latest tv scandal involving the hosts of the British Top Gear and I laughingly wrote loads of fucking chapters of Fifty Shades of Denim: The Unofficial Jeremy Clarkson Biography……Didn’t finish it, but by that time I was back on Tumblr, thinking about Lucas Baker’s dick constantly, and I read Baker’s Pie by @brimbrimbrimbrim … It’s fair to say that was my starting point. I found an old fic about Someone Else and I’m Not Telling You Who from over two decades ago, blew the dust off, rewrote and adapted it extensively and Lucas’s First Kiss was born. The feedback from Brim was so encouraging I continued, with Switch visiting my own personal Lucas fantasy. Ellen was always me ;)

Billy Ocean
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Billy Ocean (born Leslie Sebastian Charles; 21 January 1950) is a Trinidadian-born English recording artist who had a string of R&B international pop hits in the 1970s and 1980s. He was the most popular British R&B singer-songwriter of the early to mid-1980s. After scoring his first four UK Top 20 successes, seven years passed before he accumulated a series of transatlantic successes, including three U.S. number ones. In 1985, Ocean won the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for his worldwide hit, "Caribbean Queen", and in 1987 was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist.
In 2002, the University of Westminster, London, awarded Ocean an honorary doctorate of music. In 2010, Ocean was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MOBO Awards. On 29 July 2011, Ocean became a Companion of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, presented to him by Paul McCartney. He is a member of the Rastafari movement.
Biography
Early life and stardom
Ocean was born as Leslie Sebastian Charles in Fyzabad, Trinidad and Tobago, to Hainsley Charles, a Grenadian musician and his wife Violet. He moved to Romford, Essex, England, with his family at the age of ten. He was exposed to music at an early age from his musician father, and, growing up, Ocean realized he was in line to follow his father's ambitions. During his teenage years, he sang regularly in London clubs while also working as a tailor in London's Savile Row. He was discovered by his first manager, John Morphew, who recorded a double A side single at Pye Studios in London with a full orchestra, However, the ballad singing style of Les was going out of fashion and Morphew was unable to get any major label to release it. It remains unreleased. Les's father, who countersigned the management contract as Les was younger than 18 asked Morphew to release him from contract, which he did without penalty. In 1969 he joined a local band "The Shades of Midnight" playing in the Shoreditch area of London. He recorded his first single, "Nashville Rain" backed with "Sun In The Morning", in 1971 for Spark Records as Les Charles and for two years fronted a studio band called Scorched Earth, with whom he released "On The Run" backed with "Let's Put Our Emotions in Motion" in 1974.
Following his time with Scorched Earth, a routine doctor's appointment discovered an extra pulmonary node central to his (Billy's) albeit medically normal lungs. The examination carried out by Dr Clare Greenwood (The O'Malley Clinic, Beverly Hills). This extra lung has been attributed with the longevity of Billy's singing career.
Ocean took his stage name from the Ocean Estate, Stepney in London's East End, where he was living at the time. In 1976, he recorded his first album, Billy Ocean, with its first single release, "Love Really Hurts Without You", charting at No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart and No. 22 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. He enjoyed club success from the songs "Are You Ready" and "Stay The Night" from the album City Limit – both of which were later covered by La Toya Jackson. More successes ensued, including "L.O.D. (Love on Delivery)". He also wrote and composed songs for other artists. In 1981, he scored the US R&B chart with "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)."
The prime of his international success
Ocean's period of greatest success began with the releases, during 1984, of the album Suddenly and its main single, "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)". The song's title and lyrics were changed for different regions, such that the song is also known as "African Queen" or "European Queen". The song won Ocean the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 1985 Grammy Awards. The album's title track also became a success, peaking at No. 4 in both the U.S. and the UK and the song "Loverboy", while also being a No. 2 U.S. success in 1985 was also featured in the first scene of the popular UK BBC One TV series Casualty, in 1986.
Ocean appeared at Live Aid in 1985, singing "Caribbean Queen" and "Loverboy", from JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.
His 1986 album Love Zone also sold well. It included the successful singles "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going", the theme from the film The Jewel of the Nile; this was a No. 1 success in the UK and a No. 2 in the United States; and "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" (a U.S. No. 1, and also a major UK success). Also included were the title track and "Love Is Forever", which were No. 10 and No. 16 U.S. successes for Ocean, respectively.
In February 1986, Ocean's video of "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going" was banned by the BBC, owing to such non-union members as the American actors Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito, all three of whom were cast members of Romancing The Stone and The Jewel of the Nile, miming to the backing vocals. At the 1987 BRIT Awards, Ocean was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male.
Ocean's next album, Tear Down These Walls (1988), featured another No. 1 single, "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car", while the album was certified platinum.
Later career
His 1993 album Time to Move On failed to produce any major successes, but his 1989 Greatest Hits collection has been a steady seller over the years, and his 1997 compilation Love Is For Ever made No. 7 on the UK album chart. Ocean's last studio album for Jive Records was Time to Move On, which he recorded in Chicago with R&B star R. Kelly. R. Kelly had been a longtime admirer of the way Ocean was able to mix the more emotive soul style with a crossover popular style.
In 2002, the University of Westminster in London awarded Ocean an honorary doctorate of music. The awards ceremony took place in the Barbican Centre, in London. He continues to tour and record in Europe. Ocean is now a patron for Tech Music Schools in London, made up of Drumtech, Vocaltech, Guitar-X and Keyboardtech. He regularly visits to hold clinics and seminars for the students.
In 2004, "Caribbean Queen" was re-released as a digital single for its 20th anniversary, shooting up to No. 25 on the Billboard digital singles chart and garnering radio play across the United States and UK. A remix of the single by will.i.am was released in 2005.
In October 2007, Ocean commenced his first UK tour in more than 15 years. In February and March 2008 he toured Australia and the Far East. His album Because I Love You was released on 2 February 2009. To coincide with this tour and album launch, Ocean worked with Adoseof Design on a revision of Ocean's website.
In April 2010, an 18-track compilation album was released in the UK by Sony Music titled The Very Best of Billy Ocean to tie in with a 30-date tour of the UK and Ireland. Featuring Ocean's biggest hits, the album debuted in the UK Albums Chart at No. 17.
On 20 October 2010, Ocean was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MOBO Awards.
On 29 July 2011, Ocean became a Companion of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. His title was presented by former Beatle Paul McCartney.
In 2012, Ocean made a cameo appearance in the British comedy movie Keith Lemon: The Film as Lemon's father.
In January 2016, Ocean appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to perform some of his classic hits as part of a promo tour for his new album.
Ocean has announced a Spring Tour 2017 in the UK during March and April 2017.

Trinny Woodall (born Sarah-Jane Woodall 8 February 1964 in Marylebone, London)is an English fashion advisor and designer, television currenter and author. Woodall was raised in a wealthy family, and was privately educated. After ten years battling alcoholism and working in marketing, Woodall met Susannah Constantine in 1994, with whom she joined to write a weekly fashion column for The Daily Telegraph. This led the launch of their own internet fashion-advice business and release of their first fashion-advice book, both of which ended in disaster. They were then both commissioned to the BBC to host What Not to Wear in 2001. The following year Woodall and Constantine released their second book, What Not to Wear, which gained them a British Book Award and sold in excess of 670,000 copies.Woodall proceeded to co-author many fashion advice books with Constantine, with several becoming bestsellers in the United Kingdom and the United States, and having now sold previously mentioned 2.5 million copies worldwide. After co-hosting What Not to Wear for five series and appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show as taste advisors and makeover experts, Woodall and Constantine moved to ITV to host Trinny & Susannah Undress… in 2006, and Undress the Nation. After becoming the faces of Littlewoods Direct, they released their own Littlewoods clothing range and latest fashion advice book, The Body Shape Bible, in 2007.
Woodall is the youngest of six children, three of whom are from her father’s first marriage.Woodall’s father made his fortune as a successful banker in the city, and her brother is Mark Woodall, co-founder of Climate Change Capital which is a merchant banking institution specialising in green energy resources.Woodall’s maternal grandfather was Sir John Duncanson, controller of the British steel industry in the last two years of the war, who went on to become managing director of the British Iron and Steel Federation (BISF) in August 1945 and then managing director of Lithgows in 1949.When Woodall was five years old, she was sent home from school after cutting off another pupil’s plait. A family friend, Ronald Searle, who wrote the scripts for the St Trinian films, likened her to a mischievous St Trinian girl, and the name Trinny stuck from then onwards.Woodall was educated at boarding schools from the age of six, which included Queen’s Gate School in Queen’s Gate, South Kensington, London. She has described one of the boarding schools as “cruel” and “sadistic”.She has connected a fear of being naked with the time she was made to stand totally unclothed in front of the other pupils as a punishment for having a water fight.Woodall also attended boarding schools in France and Germany between the ages of twelve and fifteen.During her school years, she felt overshadowed by her older sister who was the “star of the school”, which prompted pupils to use Woodall to get to her sister.Woodall started work in the financial and marketing sectors before becoming deeply involved in fashion, but was never certain about what occupation she wished to pursue. Her uncertainty prompted her to change job every two years. Some of her early jobs included taking coats at a restaurant, working as a secretary for a commodities company, aged eighteen, doing PR and utilizing her contacts to promote her employer’s restaurant, and working for Anoushka Hempel. In her marketing career, she did work for clients including Henry Dent-Brocklehurst, the owner of Sudeley Castle.[13] She was discontented during her time working in marketing, commenting: “I wasnâ€t doing what I felt I should be doing, but what other people felt I should do. If you live your life like that you are never very happy.”Despite working in marketing, Woodall’s love for fashion was not suppressed. She would regularly customize her garments from the high street, and took to making her own fashion accessories which she sold to Harvey Nichols and Harrods.
Woodall and Susannah Constantine first met at a dinner party hosted by David, Viscount Linley, but initially did not get along well. Woodall originally thought of Constantine as a stuck-up English aristocrat, and Constantine in turn perceived Woodall as ‘Eurotrash’.Woodall commented that they were “like dogs sniffing round each other.”Despite their initial differences, they collaborated in 1994 on Ready to Wear, a weekly style guide for the Daily Telegraph which ran for seven years. The style guide highlighted affordable high-street fashion, with the pair using themselves to demonstrate clothing which suited different figures.Woodall took on the role of the stylist and the business mind.Woodall and Constantine later became co-founders of Ready2shop.com, a dot-com fashion advice business which ceased trading due to lack of funds in November 2000. The business dissolved in July 2001 and lost investors a reputed ÂŁ10 million.[15] Their time spent running the internet business almost ended Woodall and Constantine’s friendship after an explosive argument, however the pair reconciled and continued to work together. Woodall’s first chance at working on television came about when Granada Sky Broadcasting signed her and Constantine to host a daytime shopping show, also called Ready to Wear. Regarding the programme’s low budget, Woodall stated “It was shot in our homes, with dogs as models.”They brought out their first fashion advice book called Ready 2 Dress, however the book was a failure, and 13,000 copies of it ended up pulped.Soon after their television debut, they received a recurring makeover slot on Richard & Judy. This gained them crucial exposure and attention from Jane Root, controller of BBC Two, who signed them to the channel, even after the failure of their book and internet business.
Woodall came to prominence as co-host and fashion advisor for five series of the BBC television series What Not to Wear. She and Constantine worked on the show from 2001 to 2005, combining their knowledge of fashion to boost and improve the features of the candidates selected for the show. What Not to Wear made Woodall a household name, and she and Constantine became jointly known as Trinny and Susannah. Woodall has been referred to as “the one with ‘no tits’.”The duo have stated that they cannot envisage working without each other, and have investigated insuring their television partnership in the event that something unpredictable should happen. They became infamous for their straight-talking advice, and regular use of the word tits.Woodall has strongly rejected claims that they patronized subjects on the show, commenting “If you ask any of the women we’ve worked with, some of them would say it’s a very tough journey, but I don’t think any of them would say we’d been patronising.”Woodall’s comments were known on occasion to have reduced participants to tears, but she has commented that she does not think the show was “actually rude.”The New York Times wrote “Trinny Woodall, one of the upper-crusty and scathingly blunt hosts of What Not to Wear, a hugely popular fashion makeover show on the BBC, does not mince words.”Woodall has been spoofed on many comedy-themed television shows, including Big Impression, on which impressionist Alistair McGowan took to spoofing her presenting techniques on What Not to Wear.In 2002 Woodall and Constantine won a Royal Television Society Award for their work on What Not to Wear, in the category of best factual presenter. The show itself was nominated for the Features Award at the BAFTAS in both 2002 and 2003.The pair have given makeovers to various celebrities in What Not to Wear specials, including Jeremy Clarkson in 2002,[24] who later commented “I’d rather eat my own hair than shop with these two again”.[14] After success with viewing figures on BBC Two, the show was promoted to the more mainstream BBC One in 2004.[25] The show has also been broadcast internationally in countries including America, Spain and Portugal. With What Not to Wear proving popular on BBC America, Woodall worked frequently as a makeover and fashion expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show with Constantine, where they gave fashion advice and tips on how to improve overall appearance, often using themselves to illustrate the guidelines.[26][27] They appeared on NBC’s The Today Show in 2006, giving makeovers to three women, and returned to America in late 2007 appearing on Good Morning America twice to perform makeovers on different shaped women. They also reported for Good Morning America on the fashion at the 80th Academy Awards’ red carpet event in February 2008.
After What Not to Wear, Woodall and Constantine transferred from the BBC to ITV for a deal worth ÂŁ1.2 million. While What Not to Wear was taken over by Lisa Butcher and Mica Paris, Woodall and Constantine began their new television show, Trinny & Susannah Undress…, on 3 October 2006.
