A Light to lighten the Gentiles
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
29 âLord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.â
33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, âBehold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.â
36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
The Return to Nazareth
39 And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. â Luke 2:25-40 | English Standard Version (ESV) The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. ESVÂź Text Edition: 2016. The Great Commission
18 And having come near, Jesus spake to them, saying, âGiven to me was all authority in heaven and on earth; 19 having gone, then, disciple all the nations, (baptizing them â to the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all, whatever I did command you,) and lo, I am with you all the days â till the full end of the age.â â Matthew 28:18-20 | Young's Literal Translation (YLT) Youngâs Literal Translation of the Holy Bible is in the public domain. Cross References: Proverbs 8:15; Isaiah 9:6; Jeremiah 26:2; Daniel 7:13; Matthew 11:27; Matthew 13:39-40; Matthew 13:52; Matthew 18:20; Matthew 25:32; Matthew 26:64; Mark 16:15; Luke 1:33; Luke 24:47; John 3:31; Acts 1:2; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:38; Acts 18:10
Thoughts on Today's Verse⊠Last words! The last words of a parent to a child leaving for college⊠The last words of a loved one at the bedside of someone dying⊠The last words of a friend before moving to a distant place⊠These last words are chosen with care because they leave a lasting impact. Jesus' last words are our marching orders. "Go make disciples of all peoples! To do this," he emphasized, "you must go where they are, baptize them, and then teach them to do what I taught you to do." The words are not hard to understand, so what are we doing about obeying those last commands?
My Prayer⊠Father from whom all peoples derive their hope, use your Spirit to rouse within me a passion to share your grace with others. Nudge me out of my safety zone and call me into your empowering and sacrificial grace so that I can help others come to know you. In the saving name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
The Thoughts and Prayer on Today's Verse are written by Phil Ware.
