Farewell to another legend. Alex Trebek 1940-2020. R.I.P. As you all know, I was on Jeopardy! back in the 1990s on 5 shows and a major tournament, so I got to know Alex I guess about as well as a contestant (back in those days) could know him.. And yet even in the sometimes rushed and cursory setting of a fast-taping TV show (5 shows on Mondays, 5 on Tuesdays), Alex's warmth and gentle humor shone through. He really was a gem of a person, a genuine intellectual and consummate professional as a TV host, yet genial and outgoing despite the daily demands he was under.  He was a master of one of the most uncanny and difficult people skills to cultivate: putting complete strangers at ease in a high-stress environment, even amid the crushing pressure of a hard-core knowledge quiz with tens of millions watching every night. I know many have been asking lately what the secret sauce of Jeopardy!'s perennial success has been, but Alex's subtle genius in this regard is one of the underrated factors behind it.  On a personal level my own experiences on Jeopardy! were among the most formative and enriching I've had, and Alex and the show's staff were a big part of that. TV quiz shows since the 1950s have strict federal regulations (for those who've asked, it's a careful protocol for each step in a taping, compared to the more flexible systems for reality TV classified as variety shows). As a result, contestants are firewalled from most staff, with the exception of our wonderful contestant coordinators -- Glenn Kagan and Suzanne Thurber in my case -- and Alex.
