A book that ripped out my heart. Romance and grief, running from time and creating a time where you have the opportunity to explore and find yourself. Australian Queer Young Adult, hard to find and easy to relate to. 

All the Bright Places, Jennifer Niven 

Mental illness, fear around being given a label, running away from yourself, the pain of loving someone who leaves. Recovery and re-destruction. Sad, beautiful, inspiring, leaves you with a desire to find beauty in the well-known.

Famous work of literature (and well deserved), through a queer critical analyses, the novel holds the story of a girl born in the wrong time, learning about injustices and the way of human behaviour. A book to grow up alongside and learn lessons from. 

Wild Pork and Watercress, Barry Crump

A beautiful journey of escape from the real world and living off the land, a story of unlikely friendship and growth. 

How It Feels To Float, Helena Fox

A journey of grief, illness, sexuality and Australian made, this book describes connections with those who need them, something read in a sitting, no matter how many hours it takes. Gentle and harsh at the same time, giving emphasis to the ebb and flow of coping.

Det är en stark berättelse om två syskon i en dysfunktionell familj. Boken är en mejlkonversation mellan syskonen, efter att systern plötsligt lämnat hemmet och försvunnit. Hon vill inte berätta var hon är eller varför hon försvunnit och mejladressen är enda sättet för brodern att ha kontakt med henne. Boken väcker mycket känslor och tankar. Jag är fullständigt tagen. all the bright places - movie review (spoilers)

i just want to say...

what the fuck was this shit? i completely understand that things get lost in adaptations, and i understand that, i have to, because i want to be a filmmaker. but this was another level. they changed everything. ok, violet’s character might be on point. two or three scenes might be like the book. but leaving out finch’s DAD, MOM AND DECCA???? i can’t?? understand? through the WHOLE movie, his mom was gone, there was no dinner’s or lunches where they sat and his mom asked how was school. we didn’t saw finch getting bullied “enough”. in the book, he gets bullied so much, and you can see from his thoughts that it affects him. we didn’t saw his dad beating him up which also played a part in his depression. the dialogue seemed almost robotic. i don’t know if it’s because i read the book first and i knew what they were supposed to say, but i still felt like it was so so strange. i didn’t saw Finch in Justice, at all. i don’t know what made jennifer chose him. this was literally a totally different story. finch’s death seemed so rushed and weird because we didn’t saw enough signs that he was really depressed. anyway.... i could talk about it for hours, because there’s so much to talk about, but i’ll leave it at that.

Yo me preocupaba por todo, cosas que parecían significativas en realidad no eran nada, me preocupaba la vida, me preocupaba lo que pasaría si me dejaba sentir de nuevo, creía que no lo merecía, luego sin darme cuenta yo cambié, no me preocupe por lo que pasaría si vivía, me preocupo lo que pasaría si no lo hacía, lo que me perdería, me preocupo no poder recordar todos los momentos o todos los lugares, y fue gracias a Finch porque me enseño a pasear, me enseño que no tienes que subir una montaña para estar en la cima del mundo, que hasta el lugar más horrible de todos puede ser hermoso mientras te tomes el tiempo de ver y que esta bien perderse siempre y cuando puedas volver, pero mientras lo aprendía no logre ver algo mas, a Finch, no vi que estaba sufriendo, no vi que todo el tiempo me estuvo enseñando a seguir adelante, Finch era un soñador, soñaba estando despierto, soñaba con toda la belleza del mundo y la hizo cobrar vida, Fich me enseño que hay belleza en los lugares más inesperados y que hay lugares con luz aún en tiempos muy oscuros, y que si no existe tu puedes ser esa luz brillante con infinitas capacidades.

2 hours 25 minutes since I finished reading All the Bright Places

story time.

halfway into it, I couldn’t help but wonder what had driven Jennifer Niven towards developing such intense character arcs, that too, with remarkey-able perfection. i ended up googling Niven’s biography only to stumble across a google prompt of—“how does Theodore finch die in All the Bright Places”. Commonsensical reaction upon this almost-revelation is to lose your shit. I, contrarily, made a joke out of whoever thought it POSSIBLE for Finch to die. 80’s Finch can die, Nerd Finch can die, ANY Finch can die but Theodore finch? LAUGHING MY ASS OFF?
