{The Lions and The Lilies Review} A Lady's Rules for Ruin by Jennifer Haymore
My first read by Jennifer Haymore and I’m already hooked! She gave us two dynamic characters with hardships to overcome while they fell in love. Miss Frances Cherrington is the last of the Cherrington siblings still on the marriage mart. At the age of twenty-five, she’s close to spinsterhood, but not close enough. When she bumps into Evan Locke, The Earl of Winthrop, at a masquerade, the idea of…

I’m still not sure what happened, but Thirsty, the first book in my friend Mia Hopkins’s Eastside Brewery trilogy, went out of print a couple of years ago. I kept trying to recommend it because it’s steamy and sexy and gritty and working class, and the characters get a happy ending even if one of them is a reformed gang member trying to stay out of prison.
Guess what — it’s back! And now I can recommend it again!

Earls Rush In by Jennifer Haymore
Over the past couple of months, Regency era historical romances have just seemed to be my cup of tea, and I would absolutely recommend Earls Rush In by Jennifer Haymore to anyone who feels the same.
As a warning: this book does contain spice, so if that is not your thing, then this isn’t the book for you.
I’m a reader that tends to like painless romances with just a dash of angst and drama, and this is the perfect mixture. There’s some familiar tropes done here, but I would say it’s unique enough to make it memorable.
The writing flows well and is easy for the average reader to understand. The dialogue also fits with the style of the internal monologues of our main characters which works in the story’s favor. There are some liberties taken with the overly proper language that this time period had, and some hints of modern lingo, but I would say it wasn’t enough to pull me out of the story at all.
I felt very engrossed with the characters, and had quite a tough time putting it down. All the plot points felt logical in how they were executed according to both the character actions as well as time period expectations. Although the settings themselves weren’t described in too much detail, it only encourages readers to focus on the characters. There were several times where I felt frustrated with the characters and their choices, but to me that is a huge plus: the characters made me feel something. And when these conflicts are resolved properly, the ending feels so rewarding.
All in all, I had such a fun time reading this. I rate it a 4/5 stars. Not perfect, but most definitely enjoyable, and possibly something I could pick back up again on a cozy rainy day.

How (Not) to Hate a Duke by Jennifer Haymore
How (Not) to Hate a Duke by Jennifer Haymore is a newly published book.  I have read books by Jennifer Haymore before and I enjoyed them. I was looking forward to this  book when I was given a copy from Netgalley.  The book was not a simple love story, they were twists and turns.
Georgiana Milford and Theo St Clair knew each other but their families were mortal enemies. It was at a house party where they were thrown together for several days.  They came to spend time together and found out, they didn't really hate each other. The house party lasted long enough for them to fall in love and they decided to marry, but nothing ever goes simply and  Georgiana's family becomes involved.
Theo as the seventh Duke of Desborough realizes throughout this process that he needs to become a better man and take care of his land and his tenants. It is through that growth that he realizes that he does need Georgiana and is willing to fight for her. However it might be too late.
How (Not) to Hate a Duke by Jennifer Haymore is a good read. The characters, while impetuous, really did care about their family and making life better for other people. And Georgiana and Theo were in love.

Author: Her Scandalous Scot
Series: The Highland Knights, Book #2
Book Length: 275 pages
Release Date: June 12, 2023
Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars
Blog Rating: 5/5 Saltire Flags
This is the second time I read and reviewed this book as this book is a reissue and was originally under the title Highland Awakening. Furthermore Amazon posted my 5 star review back in 2017. Now in this second reissue there are some content changes and again I gave it another 5 star review. My review is similar with some minor changes with my second review for the same book. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did…..Celtic Barb’s Book Review Blog
London, 1816
This hero of the story is the handsome, strong, braw, highlander, Camden McLeod, a member of the secret Scottish mercenary elite group The Highland Knights. Camden, known as Cam, is a man who likes and is used to having things his own, precise way! The heroine is Lady Esme Hawkins, the introverted, shy, sister spinster of the Duke of Trent , who is one of the most important men in all of England! Another interesting layer to this story is Esme has a secret past that caused a scandal and nearly ruined her and the Trent name. Esme wants to make this up for past mistakes to her brother of such a high status and wants him to trust and believe in her again.
Cam and Esme meet where she is in disguise ldoing research at the most unlikely place a man brothel and he is on assignment for a Viscount at a classy expensive first class brothel where. They both share a very passionate kiss and embrace as they have instant chemistry and attraction with a dash of lust. This is the last place you expect to meet an introverted spinster and sister of a Duke. Cam is curious about this woman, when questioned about her notebook Esme fears the worst! She feels if he caught just a glimpse of her writing it could cause her ruin and scandal which forces her to bolt and take off.
Cam and Esme meet again at a party her brother is throwing and this is where he finds out she is betrothed to Henry which doesn't stop Cam in his pursuit of Esme. He is determined to have her and makes it very direct by his feelings and actions. What makes matters worse is her betrothed Henry is a former schoolmate of Cam's from Elton. On top of this there is murder in the mix as one of the Highland Knights has been murdered and the entire group is targeted for murder as well.
Will there be more deaths among the Highland Knights? Could it be Cam? Will they ever find who is doing the killing and why? Who will Esme choose Henry or Cam? Is someone’s heart possibly going to break? Will Esme get ruined with her reputation destroyed if any of her writing is ever made public? Can this destroy her brother's successful political career? To have these questions answered and more you must read this mesmerizing book to find out!
Jennifer Haymore does it again with another quick paced page turner, in “Her Scandalous Scot ''. Furthermore this includes multi dimensional characters, fast moving conflicts, stunning settings, wicked villains that immediately takes you on the path of hatred, devastation and destruction, plus mystery, murder mayhem and so much more that includes love! All the elements historical romance fans want to read about and so much more! Another swoon worthy book that caused me to lose some hours of sleep, but definitely worth the loss of shut eye! This book is action packed and full of twists and turns, a heart warming riveting adventure from start to finish! Jennifer Haymore is an exquisite master storyteller in my opinion and will leave readers totally delighted! Readers definitely do not want to miss this exceptional read!
Even though it is a re-issue that I have read before, after-all this is my second time reading this story, as it felt like a brand new book to me. Especially since there is new content in it and it has been like seven or eight years since I originally read this Highland Knight series. Readers will be able to read this in series order or as a stand alone book. I always prefer to read in book order myself, which I highly Prefer in recommend. It was a delightful read! This series is a reissue from 2016 and as always this reviewer always follows Amazon’s review guidelines.
The Highland Knights Series
1. The Spinster and Mr. Scot formerly Highland Heat
2. Her Scandalous Scot formerly Highland Awakening
Disclaimer: I received an advance readers copy from the publisher. I voluntarily agreed to do an honest, fair, review and blog. All words, thoughts and ideas are my own.

ARC Review: Earls Rush In by Jennifer Haymore
Tumblr media
3.25/5. Releases 5/8/2023.
For when you're vibing with... brother's best friend, a seemingly scary dude who is actually soft, light kidnapping, THERE WAS ONLY ONE BED, and a bit of a snowed-in romance.
I grabbed this book on a whim because of the description: the heroine is set to marry a loser, and her dead brother's best friend (an apparently scary guy) is all "this WILL NOT STAND" and kidnaps her, after which they get stuck at an inn together. I enjoy a brother's best friend moment, and I like scary dudes. While the writing is definitely good with this one--it's charming, the tension and sex itself is well-done--I feel like Haymore cut herself short a little bit by letting us know a bit too soon... he ain't all that bad!
Quick Takes:
--As I said above, I did like the writing, and I will read another book by Haymore to see if something with higher stakes works for me. At the end of the day, this is a pretty short book, and it's very classic historical romance. They're stranded, they're pretending to be husband and wife, there are charming strangers who can tell that these two are a) not actually married and b) desperate to bone. If you want something quick and button-pressing and low-conflict, then this is for you.
--For me, though, the thing that would've taken it to a 4/5 is the hero, Finn, being a bit more... intimidating. Like. He's a romance hero, this is not in any way billed as a dark romance, I didn't expect him to be horrible to her and didn't want him to be. But he's literally introduced saving a couple of random children, and the heroine's reasons for being worried about him are so vague. Like, there are rumors that he had something to do with her brother's death, but it's not very specific, and again, we are introduced to him as a saver of children, it's all very cut and dry. He's also not even very gruff with her. I could've used some gruffness! He clearly is desperately into her, so let him channel that pent-up desire into a bit of snappishness, maybe. Something to make me feel like there is a bump in the road they have to get over.
--He does wake up so hard that he almost "moans in pain", though, and I did love that. But again, he thinks about jerking it while she's away and is like "I can't do that, what if she walks in". Yeah, WHAT IF? That would actually be super fun! I think that sums up my main issue: there's dancing around some legitimately exciting stuff, but it goes for the cozy instead. And I guess I'm not super into cozy, which is my thing.
--Again, a lot of cute stuff does happen, but if you're gonna sell me on him being something of a beast, I need that beastliness to exist before it's totally tamed.
--All that said--yes, it's a cute book. Yes, I enjoyed it; yes, I would try more from this author. It just felt like some potential was wasted here.
The Sex Stuff:
It's good! Nothing crazy, again the book is quick and she's a virgin. He's very guilty about doing sex stuff to her, and there is one too many near miss moments where it's like "my God, just put it in", but I could've perhaps felt that way because I wanted him to ACT in general.
The right book for cozy readers, definitely, with a bit of mystery punched in there. It just might've erred too far on the side of cozy.
Thanks to Netgalley and Entangled for providing me with a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

2020 Reading Challenge - E-Book Edition!
According to Amazon, I have exactly 294 e-books currently sitting in my Kindle library.
Granted, some of these books have been read and are being saved for a second (or third, or fourth) re-read, but when it comes down to it, that number is around 40 books, give or take.
Which means I still have over 250 books that need to be read.
And it’s not like I haven’t tried! There are plenty of titles that, when opened up, will go to the last place I left off - that being chapter 5, or maybe chapter 10. But sometimes life gets in the way. Or a sudden interest in another author. Or a new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. But whatever the reason may be, it’s over 250 books that haven’t been read. Challenge accepted!
For 2020, I commit to not buying any new books to add to my Kindle library (checking out books from the library is ok, because you’ve gotta support your local library!), and instead focus on the books I already have. So no addition of 99 cent books, or Kindle Unlimited books, or books that are suddenly 75% off. Only the books that I currently have.
As the reading commences, and after the book is finished, I’ll update my list to indicate what has been completed, along with the date purchased, and a short review (or a reason I just couldn’t finish it at all).
