I love how interconnected comics are cause it's totally plausible that two of my favourite characters could have met.

In 2001-2002 there were these little bits of Kyle Rayner's Green Lantern run by Judd Winnick that were heavily focused on sexuality. Mainly about Kyle's teenage assistant Terry Berg. Terry was assigned to help Kyle by the illustration company Kyle worked for. And they became pretty good friends. Kyle at this point in time lived in SoHo (Lower Manhattan) with Jennie Lynn-Hayden or Jade the daughter of the original Green Lantern Alan Scott. Jade for background is like a living Green Lantern ring and her skin is green because of this.
So let's get into the issue I'm going to discuss. Green Lantern vol 3 #137. This released in 2001

So Kyle tells Terry he proposed to Jenny and she rejected him (they had recently gotten back together and she told him to slow his roll which he got but it still stung a bit) this made Terry very standoffish.
He and Kyle argue Terry says some pretty terrible things. Kyle yells at him for it.

To which Terry starts crying and Kyle realizes Terry has a crush on him as he runs off.
Then Kyle's like manager? Andre or something comes and what follows is one of my favorite comic sequences ever. Modern comics on sexuality could never be this organically funny
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"God. What about you, Man. You're an unmarried artist living in Greenwich Village. What do you think people say about you?"
Yeah Kyle what do the people say about you?
Tumblr media
"Have you insulted anyone else about their sexual orientation this afternoon?"
"No just two, but the day isn't over..."
Very good Kyle set your goals high

So then Kyle realizes he is the very last to figure out Terry was gay and thinks maybe he could use a therapist to talk it out with. To which Jenny calls him a moron because the only person Terry will want to talk it out with is Kyle and send him off to go tell Terry the truth. Whatever that means to Kyle

Kyle's little cross "so" he's so awkward I'm obsessed. But Kyle starts giving Terry a pep talk. "And I don't really a lot of insight on this subject. But I do know this-- it's perfectly normal to ask these questions about yourself." And he promises Terry there is nothing wrong with him and Terry is getting pretty cheered up about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Kyle makes it clear. He's real flattered however
"But I'm with someone."
"And you're not gay."
"No I'm not. And you're sixteen. And, like I said, I'm with someone."
There is a point here that Kyle is rejecting Terry on the ground of being a kid and Kyle is dating someone else. Terry is the one who brings up Kyle not being gay. Which Kyle confirms he's not gay. But this entire story hinges on Kyle having never thought about this and then sitting down besides a teenager with no clue what to say other than it's normal to question this about yourself.

And the story ends off with Kyle and Terry joking around and a good hug and Kyle telling Terry he was very brave today.
[The next bit of Judd Winnick writing Kyle having personal feelings about sexuality as a whole is a much less feel good story. It's the Hate Crimes two issue arc in 2002. Which I discuss here if anyone is interested]

You know, it occurs to me that neither Jennie nor Todd got Alan’s villainous taste in partners… the ambiguity of Todd’s relationship with Ian aside, his two canonical love interests/crushes are Al Rothstein, certified 10/10 himbo, and Damon Matthews, quite possibly the only Non- Corrupt DA in that city. Similarly, Hank was an absolute Good Boy during his relationship with Jen, after which she dated Kyle Rayner- you’d be better with Donna, Jennie-Lynn, but I can’t say your taste is all that bad.
Anyway, this why I think it is only right that Michael atleast sleep with several outright supervillains (Cameron Mahkent and Gentleman Ghost come to mind). You know, give Alan a taste of his own medicine in full.

Jason and Roy are best friends. Neither are aware of who the other is dating. They decide to do a double date to introduce their significant others.
The diner gets real awkward, real fast once Jason's boyfriend Kyle and Roy's girlfriend Jennie-Lynn lock eyes and realize their boyfriend's best friend is dating their ex.
A villain causing trouble doesn't come soon enough to interrupt this now intensely uncomfortable double date.

Wait. Whoah whoah. I’m so confused. Isn’t Obsidian way older? Like JLA older? Or am I mixing up comics here??? Dx Mannnn. I cannot keep up with these timelines anymore. Lol!
LOL no, though this is understandable confusion because for whatever reason, live action adaptations like Legends of Tomorrow (and maybe Smallville too? I cant remember if he was in that one) have tended to make a much older Obsidian a part of the JSA lineup when modern heroes meet up with them.
In the comics, well pre-Flashpoint continuity in specific, Obsidian is Jade’s twin brother, and Jade was on the Outsiders with Roy and Dick and dated Kyle Rayner, so that’s the age range. Personally, I headcanon Kyle and also Todd and Jenny-Lynn as being a couple years younger than Dick, but a couple years older still than Jason, who I go with the immediately post-Crisis age difference established between him and Dick, where Jason was fourteen when Dick was nineteen.
So Jenny-Lynn and Todd are on the older side of Jason’s lineup, but still younger than most of Dick’s lineup, with the obvious exceptions like Gar and Danny.

do you like kyle rayner? do you like the possible retcon about alan scott's sexuality? i think it adds an interesting element. do you like simon and jessica? are there too many earth lanterns? do you like the guardians? i think they're really interesting. what do you want dc to do with todd and jade/jennifer-lynn?
i really appreciate u sending this but have u seen any of my posts at all dfjgkbcjs
no offence but i post about hating kyle like, hourly and i’m also like. among the very few people on this website yelling constantly about alan being gay, as in 90% of the posts in the tag about that (including all the gl 80 pages) are literally posted by me! so, no, i don’t think it adds an interesting element i think it’s one of the most important things to have ever happened in comics and also a natural step for alan considering he’s been gaycoded literally since his very first appearance. alan scott, the og 1940s alan scott, being gay is literally my one and only dream and i still can’t believe its real
i hate simon and jess because they suffer from character created for woke points but never developed syndrome. there are definitely too many earth lanterns. i think sinestro was right all along about the guardians and everyone who likes them is falling for what me n katie have dubbed Guardian Propaganda (as in. beings with limitless power trying to control the universe is not good & noble in any way and stuff like the alpha lanterns, the third army, them possibly killing abin for snooping around etc etc just proves it)
ideally todd & jennie would pick up where they left off (minus jennie dating kyle, who -- again, ideally -- is tragically killed in a boating accident) and todd gets to be with damon! ideal todd n alan situation is the one from my fic, aka their relationship is so hard to navigate because alan is intensely closeted and intensely scared of todd being Like Him

She-Nova: Amalgamation of: She-Hulk + Jade Real Name: Jennifer-Lynn Walters Alias: Green Nova (Nova + Green Lantern), She-Giant Biography: In the 1930s, Dr. Phineas Horton discovered an alien artifact, which he used to create a powerful sentient android that became the heroic Human Lantern (Jim Hammond + Alan Scott). Exposure to the alien artifact also affected the biology of Horton and his lab assistants. These mutations were ultimately benign, and were passed down to Dr. Horton’s two daughters, his only children; Jessica Horton married Air Force pilot Brian Jordan, and Jenny Horton married sheriff Bill Walters. All of Dr. Horton’s descendants inherited the mutation, but only two so far have been able to harness it. Bruce Jordan, son of Jessica and Brian, realized his inherent mutation when he survived the gamma bomb detonation that contributed to his transformation into the Green Giant (Hulk + Green Lantern [Hal Jordan]). When he was visiting his cousin Jennifer-Lynn Walters, a newspaper photographer in Loshaven, California (Los Angeles + Bludhaven), she was gunned down in her home by gangsters she helped expose in the paper. Green Giant smashed the criminals, and rushed Jenny-Lynn to the hospital. The doctors accepted Bruce’s blood for a transfusion to save Jenny’s life; Bruce, after studying his own genetics, knew that if Jennifer-Lynn didn’t have the same genetic quirk as him, the gamma-irradiated blood transfusion would have killed her. While recovering soundly in the hospital, Jenny was attacked by more thugs, one of whom tried to rape her. That’s when her new abilities manifested, and she used her newfound strength and energy powers to defeat her assailants. The stress of this caused her to go on a rampage, which her cousin, as Green Giant, stopped. Bruce took Jenny to the planet Oaxan (Xandar + Oa), HQ of the Green Nova Corps (Nova Corps + Green Lantern Corps), and they helped her control her powers. Jenny became Earth’s first female Green Nova, also known as She-Nova, a member of the Justice Avengers and the Ladybirds. She also dated her fellow Green Nova Rich Rayner (Rich Rider + Kyle Rayner). Powers: Superhuman strength/speed/stamina/durability/senses/healing. Manipulation of the green light spectrum, allowing her to fly, survive in space and underwater, translate any language, communicate with her fellow Green Novas, and create “solid-light” constructs that look and function like anything she can imagine.
