Jellybaby watches: Chicken Run (2000)

Taking a leaf out of @do-you-have-a-flag’s book and watching more Movies I Haven’t Seen. The first is one I’m fairly certain I watched at least PART of as a kid, but I remember seeing the trailer on my Shrek VHS so many times I have parts of it memorised and in my echolalia library*….Chicken Run!

Yes I’m 30 years old and only just watched this. It was mainly prompted by watching a couple of video essays about Aardman and stop motion animation in general, which gave me a renewed appreciation for how much work goes into it.

Right off the bat, I noticed that Aardman must’ve been huge fans of Ab Fab, because there’s THREE actors who were in it and the characters they play here are very similar to their Ab Fab characters (Ginger is a milder version of Saffy, and Babs is literally just Bubble). Don’t think I didn’t notice a minor character named EDWINA. I see you, Nick Park. It’s also fun playing the “Who Ended Up In Harry Potter?” game. (Timothy Spall, Miranda Richardson, Imelda Staunton, off the top of my head)

I’m really glad I watched this movie as an adult, when I could properly appreciate the humour and the darkness of the story. The humour was quick and sophisticated and I just know it would’ve gone straight over little me’s head. They really weren’t fucking around with the chicken beheading scene early on. Even if it was all implied, I literally went “…Jesus…” out loud. I would’ve DEFINITELY had nightmares about that.

Out of all the movies I actually watched as a kid, it reminded me the most of A Bugs Life; similar themes, “liar revealed” story, animal cruelty, the circus, fighting for freedom, an aircraft of some kind. This time we can’t even blame Jeffrey Katzenberg, Petty Asshole, for the similarities like you can with Antz. It was quite progressive to see female on male abuse being played fairly straight in a CHILDREN’s movie as well. The gaslighting was the main tactic I noticed, with Mr Tweedy reminding himself that the chicken’s being organised was only in his imagination (even if he’s totally right). I loved loved loved the subtle beat at the end of him closing the door to the factory when Mrs Tweedy’s head is about to overload the gravy machine. No words conveyed, but we know he’s happy she’s getting what she deserves.

I do know Netflix did a sequel recently but I haven’t heard good things about it, and not to mention the decision to replace half the principal cast. Yikes. Maybe I’ll skip that one.

Overall I had a great time watching this! Would watch again. I don’t want to make these posts a “review” but more a collection of musings. So there you go.

1. History 2: Crossing the line

Cute, squishy, wholesome. Fantastic school volleyball setting, real lovable characters. The adorableness of Fandy Fan is squeal worthy. Steamy kisses and a happy ending. What more can anyone want. The best of the history series in my opinion. 

2. History 3: Trapped

Good storyline with a really strong cast. But Chris Wu as Tang Yi really stole the show for me. He was unbeatable. Every scene he was in, he commanded the audience’ s attention. He emoted so well with his eyes. The complexity of his emotions, his character as a whole. I loved this series. Well made. My first ever BL. It will always have a special place in my heart.

3. Theory Of Love

Off and Gun were impeccable in this show. They have great chemistry in general but this show was awesome. The sheer character development shown for both the characters, the progression in every episode, it had me hooked, It made me cry. Most thai Bls have this odd issue of story progression where sometimes friendships are just plot devices and more often than not, they disappear when the love story has kick started, but not this show. It was truly complete. Well made, the scenes were beautiful, no engineers thankfully. Real characters, real troubles, real friendship and pure unadulterated 100% love. Un and Two were the second couple but their story had heart as well. they weren’t just hastily put together to appease the audience. Truly one of the best romcoms ever made in general. I loved that Third wasn’t a pushover and that Khai really really worked for Third’s love and acceptance. My babies.

4. Why R U

Its already my favourite and its not difficult to figure out why. The relationships are well balanced and healthy. The acting is sooooooo good. Saifah and Zon are pure fluff and Saint and Zee are fire. I can’t pick out one scene from the whole series (what has been aired anyway) where the acting was not top notch.The relationship progression for both the main couples is realistic and healthy. There is no forceful or dubious consent involved in anything. There is no real stereotyping of roles. its different and perfect just the way it is. The scenes are picturesque and the main couples really feel like leads out of a kdrama.

5. Grey Rainbow

Yes, its a sad ending, but what can I say. Its so beautiful, touching and it made a place in my heart before I realised it. The acting was perfect, the scenes, the settings, the scenarios. Everything. It’s just so gooood. it was on my mind for a whole week after I finished it and I still feel nostalgic about it. Its just 4 episodes but it feels so homely, so warm, it wraps you up in a warm cozy blanket before you can even realise it. 500% recommend.

Honourable Mentions:

1. Love by Chance : Cute, well made. Ae-Pete are adorable, Pond is the best. The only reason it’s not up on the list is zero character development for Pete and the rape of Techno by Kengkla. Otherwise, it’s perfect. I rewatch it a lot as well.

2. Tharntype The Series

It's good. Really well made. I love that Type is perfect for Tharn. Tharn is technically a pushover and is used to getting his way by charming his way out of everything. But Type is different, sassy, perfect for him, for protecting him, strong enough to protect both of them and to not let Tharn get away with dilly dallying with his exes. Tharn is perfect for Type as he is equally schemy, knows how to get his way with Type, what works with him. They are perfect for each other. Just the way the dubious consent scene was shown and portrayed got on my nerves and the fact that Lhong wasn't punished for such a heinous crime.. agahshsjsn. He needs to be in jail. Tharn had too mild of a reaction to the reveal. I don't understand that.

3. History 1: Stay Away From Me

A sweet soft love story of 2 step brothers. Really really cute and pure. It's just like 40 mins or so, but the actors are great and it's just so sweet, makes me warm on the inside. Adorable. Recommend 100%.

4. 2 moons 2

I don't like the main couple but Ming and Kit are amazing. They have character development and the acting is on point. Forth and Beam have good development as well. I just hate the Park story arc plus unnecessary plot devices. Nine is perfect though and I can watch this just for him. Recommend for J9 essentially. They are really good.

5. Sotus

Krist Singto definitely did a good job. It's a good series but the best one is the our skyy part of the series. It's a good watch and the acting is good all around.

2gether the series seems to be really good too, until we meet again is really good as well.

Jellybaby watches: Poor Things (2023)

I reblogged like two gifsets of this movie already and have made no secret of my takeaways from it, buuuttt here we are in the grand one day old tradition. I watched Poor Things last night over a nice bowl of ice cream with my cats nearby, which is a perfect Friday night if you ask me.

I went into this blindly, outside of clips I’d seen on instagram reels and knowing Emma Stone won an Oscar for it (bloody well deserved!!), so I didn’t really expect it to be a Frankenstein’s monster crossed with Flowers for Algernon style coming of age story. Emphasis on coming, there’s a LOT of sex in this movie. Apparently Emma Stone lobbied hard to do all of these scenes herself and honestly I love it for her.

Mark Ruffalo was the other highlight of the film, which should come as no surprise if you’ve seen it. I can’t say I’ve seen him in anything else since I’m not a Marvel fan, so apparently he’s playing against type here? His performance as a foppish emotional horny man child was an absolute blast to watch. He really looked like he was having the time of his life playing this role. Also seeing him naked and hairy and fucking Emma Stone made me understand why people thirst for him. What can I say I like a hairy man? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Since I also saw Nosferatu last week, I guess Mad Scientist Willem Dafoe is becoming a bit of a theme. I will say that Poor Things and Nosferatu are similar levels of weird gothic horror for me, though the former is funnier.

I also recognised Charlie from Girls as the asshole ex husband, and Mrs Figg from Harry Potter 5 as the madam in Paris. It was the voice that had me reaching for IMDB first, it took me about 10 minutes to place who she was. Is this exposing me as the millennial I am? Yes. The cinematography was really cool, even if the fish eye lenses took me out of it sometimes.

Most people have compared the story to Frankenstein but I’m surprised no one has made the connection between Bella’s existential crises and depression with that of Charlie’s in Flowers for Algernon. With their growing intelligence comes increased knowledge about the reality and bleakness of the world around them. But while Bella chooses to use her intelligence to become a doctor, Charlie can’t and has to accept the inevitability that he will decline again just like Algernon.

In conclusion this movie gave me a lot to think about and also an excuse to say please revisit Flowers for Algernon if you haven’t since school. It’s very underrated.

This man literally owns my entire existence at the moment .-. I don't think I've ever been so obsessed with anyone before him lmao 😭🥺💖 He seems to be always full of energy, is professional and has a strong will to achieve anything he wants to. He went through a lot and he's still doing his best, not giving up. I'm so proud ❤️ It's amazing how much he has improved since lbc and I can't wait to see him in more shows hhh also he's the cutest and deserves all the happiness in the world, thank you very much

2) Shoma Uno

The thing with Shoma is that when I saw him perform for the first time, it was at Internationaux de France 2019. And it was one of the worst performances in Shoma's entire career. And I think that's exactly the thing which made me love him so much. I could've put Yuzuru here because omg he's the goat and every his performance is so extraordinary, but Shoma just won over my heart. As he was crying in Kiss&Cry, I was crying with him and I'll forever remember idf2019 as one of the most emotional and tear-jerking competitions I've ever watched. I'm so happy he's training with Lambiel now, even if the worlds were cancelled ;;

3) Jacksepticeye

Sean is one of the most positive people on this earth and his mental attitude inspires me. Plus he never fails to make me laugh and watching his videos is one of my favorite pastimes ever. I adore him so much for what he does and how many people he makes happy ❤️

4) Emma Watson

Firstly, she's pretty. Secondly, I love her as an amazingly talented actress and as a human rights activist. It's beautiful to see how much she achieved starting from a role of Hermione in HP and I'm proud of her 💖

to be honest, this is really just going to be a top 10, because all these shows and the actors in them are my babies and i feel bad pitting them against each other (cause i’m weak)

top favorites

1 - love by chance

this is the drama that got my love for thai bl started. i was in such a dark, sad place when i first found lbc, and it really pulled me out of it. i will always be thankful for that. there are obviously parts of this show that i absolutely detest and wish weren’t in it, but putting those aside, this show has my whole heart. ae and pete were the first gay couple in media that i saw that made me think “these two could actually be real.” they have such a sweet, wholesome, realistic relationship that brings me nothing but joy. every time i go back to watch this show, i feel the same things i felt the first time i watched it.

2 - until we meet again

a recent show but an amazing one. i have nothing but good things to say about this show. for one, it’s got a fantastic plot, two, the cast is probably my favorite bl cast ever. and three - the most important thing - deanpharm. i adore these two more than i could ever say. they are so healthy and good and perfect in every way. as with aepete, they’re so realistic to me. every scene with the two of them feels so authentic. not to mention they’re sweet as sugar, and i live for that in my ships. i was crushed when this show ended, and i go back and rewatch scenes constantly because i love it so much.

3 - theory of love

this show stars the kings offgun, so of course it’s on my list. the entire concept of this show is so cool. i love how every episode is named after a different movie, and the film theme is kept throughout the entire show. also the switch from third’s point of view to khai’s point of view halfway through the series was a really interesting, different take that i don’t think i’ve ever seen in any other show. the character development? *chef’s kiss* gun’s crying gets high honors, because god damn, that boy must have been dehydrated. also, offgun redemption kiss. that victory was so sweet.

4 - 2moons2

if you know me, you know i adore this show, but more importantly, the cast. those six boys are what really make this show as good as it is. the fact that they all came in as new actors still astounds me. but putting them aside, i just love how soft and sweet this show is. if i need a pick me up, this is my go to. there are moments from all three couples that give me all the warm feelies in my heart. i am so so so excited for 2moons3, i literally can’t wait much longer.

5 - dark blue kiss

is this a surprise, coming from my polca ass? didn’t think so. first things first: TAYNEW. now that that’s out of the way, pete and kao make me so happy. despite the obvious flaws in this show (looking at you, non), the two of them really showed what it’s like to be not only a long term gay couple, but also the struggles of figuring out how to come out. that entire scene by the pool where they were discussing why they have to prove themselves more because of their sexuality? that HIT ME in my SOUL. oh, and don’t even get me started on that anniversary scene. i also love morksun torturing rain with their love by jumping into his bed every night. if you look past the bad parts of this show (again, LOOKING AT YOU, NON), it’s very sweet and incredibly real at times.

6 - he’s coming to me

talk about underrated but amazing. well, how could it not be, with the king himself, singto prachaya, as the lead. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: he’s coming to me was a straight show made for a gay couple. what i mean by that is that the plot isn’t focused on the relationship. instead, it’s focused on something broader with a relationship added in, which is something more straight couples are given than gay couples. and what a wonderful relationship it is. mes and thun are so cute and yet so emotional too. one minute, they’re acting a fool and the next they’re crying to each other. for every fun scene this show has, there’s one that breaks your heart (in the best way). that coming out scene made me literally sob, it was so fantastic. not as many people have seen this one, but they SHOULD.

7 - sotus

an absolute classic. ignoring some of the drama that comes along with this show, i really like it. the plot is really interesting, and i love the large cast of characters. the episode where all the freshmen get there gears? when the hazers ask if they can be their seniors? talk about water works, because i bawled. again, the king himself, singto prachaya, is in this so. that obviously gives it some points. it’s just a really good starter bl.

8 - great men academy

p’tangmooooo. god, i can’t, i love these boys. this came out at the height of me trying to watch every thai bl possible in the shortest amount of time. and watching it was such a treat. the cast, oh my god. amazing, fantastic, phenomenal, iconic. tangmolove is so adorable. james, PLEASE come back to acting so we can get a season two where we see the two of them as a couple. i need it so bad. i wish this show was more available to international viewers, because it’s so great, pretty short, and just such a fun watch.

9 - history3: make our days count

...okay so what we’re going to do is ignore the last episode and say that hao ting and xi gu lived happily ever after. okay? okay. moving on from that, my heART. sometimes, shows don’t need to have big, intense plots. sweet, romantic shows are just as nice. and oh my god, does this show tick off the sweet box. every episode had my heart aching by the end, because hao ting and xi gu were so sweet. it’s just a nice story about two young boys learning how to navigate a relationship. hao ting is so whipped for xi gu too, which is always a plus. his little munching he does at him? he’s a certified puppy.

10 - our skyy

some people will say this doesn’t count, but i say it does! and besides, i’m pretty sure i’ve rewatched all 5 episodes more times than any of these other series combined. i just love the premise. taking 5 couples we already know and love and giving us more of them? genius. each episode is so cute in their own way, and i wish that they would make a second season. maybe more episodes so we can have the couples from the first with some new ones too? that would be my dream. if you’ve watched any of the shows that precede our skyy, i highly recommend checking out that couples’ episode!

This song just came out and I haven't been able to stop listening to it. Even though the lyrics are sort of melancholy, it makes my heart warm.

‘Simple Romance’ Chapter 2: Holmes and Hooper

When Molly clocked in the next morning, Mike informed her that a small parcel had been left in her office. Curiosity got the best of her, so the first thing she did was see who it was from. There wasn’t any indication of the sender until she opened it up. There, atop a couple of bags of her favourite sweets, a note lay waiting to be read.

               I thought you’d like a pick-me-up for the day. Hope it makes you smile. –SH

               “What am I going to do with you?” she muttered to herself, unable to keep the smile off her face. She’d had a bit of shit morning already, having gotten in a row with Tom over the phone. They had different ideas about when the wedding should be. He felt it should be sooner rather than later, but Molly didn’t want to rush into it. She hadn’t a clue why—Molly had been waiting for this time in her life for a long time, so why was she suddenly not in a hurry to jump right in?

               Jellybabies and winegums were her favourites—Sherlock knew that, so why didn’t Tom? She laughed in disbelief at the situation she found herself in. It was awfully funny that a man who finds facts like that trivial to keep note of it anyways. She’d be lying if she said she didn’t love him, because oh she did, and always would. Overall, she was happy with Tom; happier than she thought she’d ever be. But then a line from that Sheryl Crowe song played in her mind: If it makes you happy, then why the hell are you so sad?

               Why, indeed.

               “How’s it going with Molly?” Mary asked, lounging on the sofa in 221B. She took a bit of the apple she had been munching on for the past ten minutes.

               “Well, I dropped off a parcel in her office before she arrived at work, and I’m waiting to see what comes of it.” Sherlock flipped through the book in his hands. “Slow day for clients too; doesn’t show much promise for anything interesting.”

               “Or does it just not show any promise of you heading to the hospital today?” Mary teased. It was her day off from the surgery, but John still had a couple of appointments for the day. She figured she’d hang around Baker Street to get her kicks. Sherlock ignored her remark in favor of his mobile. A smile lit up his face for a moment. “Good news?”

               “Molly texted,” he explained.

               “And?” Mary encouraged.

               “It did make her smile,” he replied. “At least that’s what she told me. I think I might be onto something.” Sherlock thought back on the many times his father had seemingly made his mum fall in love with him several times over. Perhaps he was a natural at these romantic entanglements after all.

               “Sherlock, we may need your help on this one.” Lestrade burst into the sitting room. “How do you feel about murderous ghosts?”

Taking a deep breath, Sherlock knocked on the door of Molly’s office. He could hear Tom within the room as well, making him groan in frustration. The door swung open, and there she stood in front of him, all smiles and sunshine. “Oh, hello, Sherlock,” she greeted him. “Is everything alright? Come in.” The invitation made Sherlock flash a smug look toward Tom, who looked quite cross with him.

               “Yes, just fine; I was hoping you could help me out with a case Lestrade had just given to me,” Sherlock replied, following her inside. He immediately noticed the fairy cakes that had been brought to her by Tom, sitting untouched on her desk. Funny, since being her fiancé, Tom should know that Molly isn’t fond of fairy cakes. Her true downfall was those jellybabies he’s seen her buy from the vending machine at Bart’s on several occasions.

               “Have you been to the crime scene yet?” she asked, smoothing her jumper.

               “Ah, no, I stopped by here to see if you’d like to come along. I’d appreciate to know your take away from it. Apparently there’s a ghost involved, not that I believe in such things.” Sherlock smirked as she suddenly gave him her full, undivided attention. Molly loved the idea of the supernatural, and he knew this case would be right up her alley.

               “Let me grab my coat from the locker room, I’ll be right there,” she smiled, enthusiasm radiating off her.

               “But, Molly, I thought we were going to have lunch today,” Tom complained.

               “This is part of my job. We can do it tomorrow!” she called back at him from the hallway. Tom glared at the consulting detective, but quickly straightened up at Molly’s reappearance moments later. “Besides, the game is on!”

               “Right you are!” Sherlock grinned, exiting the room with her.

               Upon arrival, Molly took in the old Victorian home. It looked as if it were in the process of being fixed up by the owners who bought it just a few months ago. Only one owner remained now.

               “So, what exactly happened?” Sherlock asked Lestrade.

               “Well, Mrs. Cunningham took quite a fall, she did. She fell over the balcony, taking the old rail with her,” he explained. “It’s quite the accident it seems. She kept making claims of having seen a ghost which sent her over in the end.”

               “This was murder,” Sherlock stated.

               “I figured you’d say as much, but how? The wood is shown to be rotting, which is a plausible explanation,” Lestrade pointed out.

               “Someone could’ve loosened the nails,” Molly suggested. “According to the statement from the real estate agent, the structure was quite solid before they began fixing it up.”

               Sherlock smiled proudly at her. His Molly was so clever. “And this ghost? Where does it come in?”

               “Well, her husband had told us she saw this young woman in the greenhouse one day, and later, found the woman’s photo in his findings of a tragedy that happened here. Apparently, she had been brutally murdered by her husband decades ago,” Lestrade explained, handing them the printed article. The woman pictured had fine blonde hair, her face containing elongated features.

               “Fascinating,” Molly remarked. “May I?” she nodded at the body lying there.

               “Be my guest; that goes for you too, Sherlock.”

               Together, he and Molly looked for any possible signs of foul play having happened before she fell.

               “Sherlock, take a look at this.” Molly gestured to the woman’s left arm. He took note of the cut that had clearly been made before she died.

               “Interesting,” he remarked. “Did she have a good life insurance policy?”

               “You’re thinking the husband did it?” Lestrade ran a hand through his hair. “The two never had issues in the seven years they were married.”

               “In cases like these, it usually is,” Sherlock replied. “You must always watch out for the ones who seem perfect, for they are always hiding a darker side.” He was looking at Molly when he said it, thinking of how too perfect Tom seemed to be in her eyes, but Sherlock knew better. He didn’t trust the man with her. That wasn’t to say he was a murderer, but there was definitely something dark inside him.

               “How do you explain the ghost?” Lestrade asked.

               “I don’t know yet, but I’ll get back to you when I figure it out.” Sherlock looked around for the ambulance, spotting it across the street. “Is Mr. Cunningham in there?”

               “He is; we haven’t been able to get much out of him as he’s had a shock,” Lestrade replied.

               “Shock,” Molly scoffed. “If you’re right about him, I say he hired someone to act as a ghost to scare her over the railing.”

               “Intriguing theory, Molly, let’s revisit it a bit later; you may be onto something.” Sherlock had gotten his chance to show off for her once before, but he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t disappointed with how little he had to show this time. But, oh, he loved it when she was unknowingly clever. He was certain that Molly Hooper could beat him in a battle of wits without even trying. His eyes shifted to her hair, tied up into a sophisticated bun. How many times had he imagined pulling her hair free from its restraints, just to brush his fingers through it? “Focus,” he scolded himself.

               “What was that?” Molly asked.

               “Um, your brain is really focused today.” What in the hell had he just said? Smooth move, Holmes. The look she gave him in response was a mix of confusion and amusement. Wonderful. “Ah, Mr. Cunningham, do you think you’re ready to tell us what you know to be true?”

               “Yes, I—I think I can,” he stumbled out, shrugging off the shock blanket around his shoulders. “For the past few days, ever since I found information on the tragic past of this house, Lindsey had been convinced the woman she met in the greenhouse here was the ghost of the murdered wife. I told her ghosts weren’t real, but she began hallucinating.”

               “What kind of hallucinations?” Molly asked, captivated by the strange case.

               “Well, she claimed hearing the sound of someone scratching at out bedroom door, and sometimes she’d hear the sound of knives scraping. I never heard a thing. I offered to get her some help, but she wouldn’t listen.”  Mr. Cunningham’s voice was shaky as he told his story, as if he wasn’t quite convinced of it himself.

               “Give us a moment.” Sherlock pulled Molly aside. “I don’t doubt that his wife heard these sounds, do you?”

               “No, not at all; what are you thinking?” she asked. He was so close to her that she had to tell herself to calm down. Why did he have such an enticing effect on her? For God’s sakes, she could smell the mixture of cinnamon, cloves, wood smoke, and a hint of sweet tobacco on him. It was highly intoxicating. All the times he had spent the night in her flat, hiding away from the world, she had wanted to curl up against him just once; she still wanted to.

               “I’m thinking a look inside the house is imperative. We’ll have to have Lestrade let us in.” Sherlock strode toward the doorway where Greg stood, getting the approval to head inside. Molly followed after, volunteering to search downstairs whilst Sherlock went up to search the bedrooms. She looked in the kitchen first, with the knives in mind. They could possibly take finger prints to compare them with the husband’s. She’d bring it up with Greg to see what he thought.

               It wasn’t much longer until the sound of a phone ringing caught her attention. Molly walked toward the stairway where Sherlock held out a phone to her. The contact calling came up as ‘Caroline Smith’ with a photo of a blonde woman with elongated features.

               “That’s—“

               “—the supposed murdered wife from decades ago? Yes, I believe I’ve already solved it,” Sherlock smirked, heading straight towards Lestrade. “Arrest that man, and find this woman.” He handed the phone over to the DI. Mrs. Cunningham’s husband was now currently present with the rest of the police.

               “You’ve solved it!?”

               “Of course I’ve solved it; Mr. Cunningham was having an affair with Miss Caroline Smith, who he asked to spook his wife with the intention of sending her to an asylum. Quite easily, he imposed her photo within the article to leave lying around for his wife to find, making her believe she had seen a ghost the day they moved in. Am I getting this right, Mr. Cunningham?” Sherlock stared him down.

               “Yes, I had an affair, and I asked that of her, but I didn’t send her over the edge!” Mr. Cunningham argued.

               “You may not have, but you did loosen the nails just enough to give way to her weight against the railing; I’m entirely certain that murder was in your agenda from the very beginning,” Sherlock snapped at him.

               “Impressive,” Molly remarked. The last thing she needed to do was fluff his ego, but she couldn’t help herself.

               “Elementary; fancy some chips?” Sherlock waited for her response with bated breath, knowing she had flat out ignored his request the last time he had asked.

               “Love some,” she replied, no longer caring to hide her pleased smiles from him. They were just a couple friends going out for chips after a case…right?
