Sapho (1897). Jean de Paleologu (PAL) (Romanian, 1855-1942). Poster. Printed by chez F. Hermet, Paris. Library of Congress.
This poster is for the 1897 premiere of "Sapho," a five-act tragic opera based on a novel by Alphonse Daudet. "Sapho" focuses on the ill-fated love affair between a young man and an aging courtesan, the latter played by Emma Calvé, the most famous French opera singer of the Belle Époque. First performed on 27 November 1897 by the Opéra Comique at the Théâtre Lyrique on the Place du Châtelet in Paris.
