SUM 22: A better soundtrack including this playing over the cliffhanger ending. Seems the determination of Dom protecting the Fast Family is really ironic.

Summer Days
Tumblr media
Request: Yes or No
Pronouns: He/His/Him, M!Reader
Summary: Sarah's summers have always been days filled with fun and occasionally chaos. Her two most memorable summers? Completely and utterly different from each other.
CW/TW: Typical OBX warnings, mentions of drinking, brief mention of dealing, uhhh situationships being the worst, very minor angst, sarah please pick a guy and stick with him
~~~
"And I told him I wanted the newest Hermรจs bag that came out recently. I mean, I sent him a picture of it and everything, but no, Jason 'forgot' and got me a Prada bag. Dad always gets me Prada for my birthday, and he knows that. It's like he's not even listening to me."ย
Sarah absentmindedly listened to Phoebe vent about her boyfriend again, her head tilted out to observe the long expanse of the ocean around them. Her mouth still felt sticky from the juice she'd been drinking, the taste of mango dancing on her tongue and mixing with a hint of strawberry from the sips she'd taken of Audrey'sย daiquiri. She inhaled the salty air and turned away from the serene scenery to search for the rest of the Kooks around.ย
She spotted most of the guys in the water or lingering around the bar, among them her older brother who lounged on the pool floaty Kelce had brought along. Topper remained by the bar to work as their temporary bartender, taking out and pouring cool drinks for them whilst animatedly chatting with Jason who seemed oblivious to his girlfriend's irritation. Kelce finished his beer with one last swing and wiped at his mouth with the back of his wrist before he ran forward and dove off the yacht into the water, droplets of water briefly raining on the three girls and pulling groans from Phoebe and Audrey.ย
With a soft chuckle, Sarah swung her legs over the couch and wiped the droplets off her warm arms, the heat of the floor digging into the bottom of her feet as she quickly headed for the shaded area to escape it. Topper greeted her with a wide smile and offered her one of the beer bottles he cracked open but she dismissed him with a shake of her head and headed below deck where sweet feeling AC oozed out to cool her sun-kissed skin.ย
She spared a glance over her shoulder to ensure Topper hadn't followed her down for a conversation before she opened the door leading into the bedroom and slipped inside. She shut the door quietly behind her and turned on her heel to eye the familiar man lying on the bed. He lifted his head groggily and squinted through the light pouring in from the window, grunting quietly when he recognized her and dropping his head back onto the pillow.ย
"Hey, sleepyhead." She greeted, climbing into the bed and feeling herself sink into the mattress as she crawled over to him. Flopping down beside him and propping her head up on her hand, she used the other one to stroke his head with a small smile. "Long night, huh? I haven't seen you in hours."
"The Carrera's let the Zimmermans host their wedding vow renewal at the restaurant and the last few guests left around 2 in the morning. You'd think with their age and money, they'd know a few things about etiquette." He huffed softly and rubbed at his eyes with his knuckles, lips forming a small pout. Exhaustion still clung to his tone.
"Sounds like 'em." She giggled.
Scooting closer and pressing herself into his side, she leaned in and pecked the corner of his lips. He breathily chuckled and lolled his head to the side to look at her through half-lidded eyes threatening to fully close again. His arm slipped under and around her waist, fingertips brushing over her hip and toying with the side of the blue bikini bottom. Her lips tugged into a smile and she leaned forward again, properly pressing her lips over his and dragging her body over his. She shuddered at the feeling of his cold skin pressing against her, feeling the vibrations of another chuckle.ย
He pressed his palms against her back and she immediately arched with a soft hiss to escape the cold, the contrast in temperatures sending a sharp jolt up her spine. "You're cold." She whined, swatting at his shoulder and puffing out her cheeks in a huff that faded with his gentle laughter.ย
His arms tightened around her and he rolled them over swiftly, the movements drawing a short squeak from Sarah followed by more giggling. He slumped down on top of her, the weight of his body pressing down on her and keeping her trapped beneath the cold. She gave a low groan at the feeling and fumbled around for the tousled blankets until she tugged one over them to escape the cold of the blasting AC. His lips pushed against hers again, more lazily than she had, and his fingers toyed with the laces of her bikini top.ย
Sarah hardly recalled when he'd gone from simply being her brother's friend to being the guy she snuck around with. There'd been a time when she'd dismissed the very thought of even flirting with someone involved with her brother's shenanigans but his friendly smile and the gentleness of his touch had turned her brain to mush. What she'd intended to be a simple kiss of curiosity extended into opening herself up to be at her most vulnerable.
His phone buzzed on the nightstand, tugging a heavy sigh from his chest. She watched him sluggishly search around the edge of the bed until his knuckles bumped into the nightstand and he managed to find his phone with a quiet grunt. (Y/N) raised his head and tapped the screen, watching it light up and show a new message. Sarah's lips pursed at the sight of Kiara's text, unable to tear her eyes away from the text in hopes of seeing its contents.
"How's..." Sarah swallowed. "How's Kie?"ย
"Still hanging out with her troublemakers." (Y/N) yawned, pressing over a single emoji and sending it in response. "They're gonna wind up dead sooner or later if they keep all that shit up. Or in jail."ย
"I don't know," Sarah said thoughtfully, raising her gaze to the ceiling, her fingertips toying with the ends of her hair. "They always look like they're having fun, like every day is a new adventure for them."
(Y/N) chuckled and set his phone down on the nightstand again, ignoring the next time it buzzed. "You want to be one of 'em now?"ย
"What? You don't think I can be?"ย
"I think-" (Y/N) pressed his lips against her jawline. "-that Kie will never let you anywhere near her boys, let alone join them on their 'adventures', Sarah."
Tumblr media
Sarah shifted her weight from foot to foot, bubbling nerves forming in the pit of her stomach as she focused on the graying hair of the man in front of her, resisting the urge to peer around him to look at (Y/N) tending the register. How long had it been since the end of... whatever they had going on? Almost a year, she recalled, since they parted ways and she found herself a spot amongst the Pogues. A dozen things had practically happened since then, some highs she'd remember forever and some lows she'd rather forget.ย
"Have a good day," (Y/N) called to the man shuffling away with his things, his eyes locking onto his phone screen as he typed swiftly before tucking it back into his pocket. He looked at her, blinked in surprise, and then plastered on one of those tight-lipped smiles people used to greet each other on the street.
"Hi." Sarah exhaled, heaving two paint cans onto the counter before retrieving the two smaller ones she'd set on the floor. "It's been a while."ย
"Yeah," (Y/N) scanned each bucket of paint, the silence that followed filled by the soft whir of the AC and the quiet beeping of the scanner. "I assume these are for the project down at Maybank's old place?"
"Yeah! We're, uhm, we're opening up our own shops down by the water. It'd be nice if you, uhm, decided to stop by once we're done. Support your local business and all that." Sarah laughed, somewhat awkwardly, and tucked some hair behind her ear, her lips pursing slightly when he only hummed in response. He looked the same, she noted. The casual, nonchalant attitude remained, the very thing that'd caught her attention after his smile.ย
"Funny coming from a Cameron." He muttered, tapping some buttons before nudging the card machine toward her. "Your total is $23.92."
"Routledge now, actually," Sarah corrected half-heartedly, fumbling with the pockets of her jacket before taking out the cash Pope had reluctantly parted with after he'd ensured to remind her numerous times to just buy the four cans of paint. She flicked through the bills, counting softly under her breath before handing over the money.ย
"Soon-to-be or was it a small, private affair?" (Y/N) asked, sticking the money in the register and handing her back the change. She ignored the buzz in her veins when their fingers grazed and shoved the change into her pocket, reminding herself why she'd chosen John B in the first place... though, she'd be lying if it hadn't started as a rebound. "Or is it one of those things like getting a promise ring and then waiting a few years?"ย
"We're... still figuring it out." Sarah shrugged and took a deep breath, grasping the cool handles and lifting the cans from the counter. She pressed her lips together, eyes flickering between the two remaining cans on the counter and internally groaning over having brushed Kiara off so she could spend time with JJ. "Can-"
"You can take the lighter ones." (Y/N) snorted softly, rounding the counter and taking the cans from her already aching hands. Sarah inhaled, and then held it, the subtle smell of his cologne washing over her and filling her head with memories of their time together. "Where's the car?"
Once she took the smaller cans, she led him outside where humid air and blazing sunrays awaited them, immediately making her miss the cold air in the store as they walked down the sidewalk to the curb where she'd parked the Twinkie. She clutched the cans with one arm and fumbled for the keys with the other before unlocking the passenger door and setting them down below the seat. (Y/N) mimicked her actions, carefully setting the cans down and rubbing the imprint from the handles.ย
Shutting the door for her, he turned to face her, lips drawn into a line that barely resembled a smile. "Well, it was nice seeing you, Sarah. Good luck with your, uh, maybe husband and all that."ย
"You could- you could come, you know, to our place. I'm sure Kie would love catching up and- and I think you'd really like Cleo. She's amazing and-"
"I don't think that'd be a good idea considering our... history."ย
Sarah's brows twitched downward, a mixture of embarrassment and a hint of hurt flaring inside her. "History? You can say the word, you know. It was a relationship. We were together for, what? A year? Almost two? And you never even bothered inviting me to things or- or even being public about it-"ย
"We never talked about what it was." (Y/N) scoffed. "We were friends who fucked for a long time. I never knew what it actually was because you never wanted to talk about it, Sarah. You were the one who broke it off, anyway, and for what? We argued one time and you moved on. So, I don't get why you're bringing this up now or why you're upset when you're in a relationship."ย
"I- I..." Sarah trailed off, her mouth clamping shut and teeth grinding together. She raked a frustrated hand through her hair, pushing back the strands of blonde and brown hair away from her face. "I got scared, okay? Sometimes I get scared so I leave people before they can leave and break my heart. I.. I'm sorry. I didn't want us to- to end like that. I didn't want us to end at all. I wanted to, I don't know.. make you jealous so you'd come back."ย
"But I didn't, and now you're with Routledge, so maybe it wasn't meant to be in the first place." (Y/N) exhaled heavily, his shoulders slumping with the air that escaped his lungs. "I don't do this type of thing anymore, Sarah. I left all that childish back-and-forth shit in high school; I don't deal, anymore, or even hang with Barry. If you want to be a Routledge, you can't go around talking to other guys about why things didn't work out. Don't fuck this up for yourself."
Characters being perma-killed off can be pretty shocking but besides Chef; and technically Kenny at one point, I can't think of one that REALLY shook everyone, even now. (I remember that one time we all thought Stan was going to be incapacitated all season after being shot, only to have his arm in a sling next episode completely fine. We knew he wasn't dead, but still.)
close calls do totally count, like thinking stan was dead/seriously injured after dead kids, butters jumping out the window in safe space, tolkien getting shot in world war zimmerman... some examples of ones that made me personally hold my breath.
Others that I would nominate who are Dead Dead: Pip, and Jason White. And if I'm feeling silly about it, Cartman's stuffed animals. (Because we all know how that death less affected the viewers but moreso, cartman. god I love 1% that episode is so good)
Do you by any chance have translation recommendations for the Argonautica?
Beloved anon! I do indeed have a few recommendations for the Argonautica - I'm assuming English and I'm also assuming you mean Apollonius of Rhodius' Argonautica and not Flaccus' account or the Orphic Argonautica so my recommendations will be based on that! Admittedly, there aren't even a quarter as many options for english translations of the Argonautica as there are of the Odyssey + Iliad but the ones that do exist are pretty fun overall. Also there's a fraction of a fraction of the academic pretentiousness that tends to plague Odyssey/Iliad translations just because of the nature of the Argonautica vs the Odyssey/Iliad.
My defacto recommendation is the 1912 translation by R.C Seaton! It's fun, reasonably straightforward and despite its age, I don't actually think the prose is that difficult to read. It's also fairly comprehensive, Seaton is very precise in his translations which is why I think it's withstood the test of time so well. His translation is also public domain, so you can very easily find a copy of it online via Project Gutenburg if you just want to lay eyes on it before deciding if it's up your alley or not.
If older translations really aren't your speed, either because of the difficulty of the syntax or because of the difference in the vocabulary of that time period, then my modern recommendation is Peter Green's 'The Argonautika' (2007). It's actually a very stylish translation that pays a lot of attention to metre though I do think some of his vocabulary choices are a bit complex here and there. It's extremely concise, clear, well grounded and Green's book also comes with extended commentary, glossaries and maps to help build a comprehensive understanding of both the physical and cultural components of the story. I'd recommend it as a good pick up in general tbh, I always have a lot of fun with it.
My third recommendation isn't a strict translation but rather a drama adaptation of the tale! Mary Zimmerman's 'Argonautika: The Voyage of Jason and the Argonauts' (2013) is a really fantastic adaptation of the tale and I do genuinely encourage a read of it if you're looking for a very effective summary of the story! Zimmerman in general is a top notch playwright (She also did a stage version of Metamorphoses!) and her script is rich but grounded. Her play was adapted from the translations of Green (mentioned above) and David Slavitt's 'The Voyage of the Argo' which is a translation of Flaccus' Argonautica. It's definitely a bit removed from the two translations mentioned above on account of being an adaptation rather than a translation, but I do like it enough to mention it.
Hopefully this helps and, as always, happy reading!
Any sex positive ya/na recs? Please and thank you
Yes okay! I definitely do not mind recommending my own books for this - Cool for the Summer, Home Field Advantage, Going Bicoastal, and Out on Good Behavior. L.C. Rosen is always reliable for this in gay YA - Jack of Hearts, Camp, etc, Jay's Gay Agenda by Jason June, Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett, Margo Zimmerman Gets the Girl by Brianna Shrum and Sara Waxelbaum and Fresh by Margo Wood for sure. I haven't read Shara Wheeler to know if it specifically applies but I would definitely count Casey McQuiston's NA novels as sex positive. By Any Means Necessary by Cam Montgomery. I feel like the books I've read lately have all been pretty sex-positive and honestly I'm struggling to think of things that don't fit, but these are a good start!
2015 Sing-Off tour
Tumblr media
The first Sing-Off national tour in 2014 was a rousing success. So, even though the show's fifth "season" was reduced to a one-night holiday special, the second tour was expanded. The schedule was nearly twice as long, packing in 56 cities over the course of 9 weeks.
.
Rehearsals
The singers didn't document their rehearsals for the second tour the way they did the year before. Why? Because the VoicePlay guys lost most of the first of their two allotted practice days to weather related flight troubles. Once they finally made it to upstate New York, it was crunch time on the group numbers with their new compatriots to be ready for opening night.
.
Performances
Not only did the second tour visit more cities, for one night it was also livestreamed through Live Nation. Thanks to the forethought of an Exchange fan, the full Louisville concert from March 25th โ€” including season 5 winners the Vanderbilt Melodores โ€” has been archived in one convenient place.
(But because more is better, I've also provided links to audience recordings of individual songs from other stops on the tour.)
Addenda
Award-winning barbershop quartet Forefront weren't included in the streamed video, but they did a great job warming up the crowd at the Louisville show.
Although they didn't perform it for the streamed concert, VoicePlay and Street Corner Symphony's cover of "Don't" by Ed Sheeran that had served as the tour announcement was included in at least some of the shows during the tour. There is a video of it from Red Bank, NJ.
Because they'd used most of their songs from the competition during the previous tour, VoicePlay's set was comprised of numbers from their established stage rotation, a recent addition to their "Aca Top 10" series, and one medley exclusive to the tour that featured video clips from some of their season 4 compatriots.
At the Seattle show, The Exchange slipped a version of "Can't Hold Us" by local boy Macklemore into their set.
The eldest Lister brother, Richie, was on the tour with Street Corner Symphony for the first few weeks, then handed his microphone off to Kaleb Jones for the rest of the run.
While Layne was away for one weekend to be in his sister's wedding, first Richie Steighner from The Exchange, and then VoicePlay's hometown pal Antonio Fernandez stepped in to cover percussion.
.
Shenanigans & reunions
When you put 16 creative guys in close quarters for two months straight, they're going to get up to some nonsense eventually. During this tour, it manifested most notably in the form of a Nerf war that then escalated to water guns and Super Soakers.
Of course, sometimes their friendly combat happened in the form of many colorful pixels.
Tumblr media
Video games are a great way to pass the time on the road and make friends.
And sometimes they just enjoyed each other's talents.
.
VoicePlay tossing Twinkies into the crowd every night meant that sometimes they needed to resupply, which Hostess apparently helped out with.
Tumblr media
instagram
And sometimes they had extras to distribute at the end of the night.
.
Surprisingly, one of their victims auditioners early in the tour turned out to be a Paul Simon fan.
.
Swinging through Florida meant that VoicePlay's family and friends could attend one (or more) of the shows.
Guess which of their significant others hadn't worked in entertainment. Hint: It's the one who heard the photographer call for a "kiss pic" and went in for a full snog.
And their buddies in The Edge Effect joined them as the opening act for two of those three dates.
Tumblr media
Having a day off at home also allowed Tony to pick up everyone's favorite member of the backstage crew.
Fletcher is a good boy, and friend to all.
.
Emoni Wilkins, VoicePlay's partner in crime for the first Sing-Off Tour, popped in to visit during their shows in Nashville and Louisville.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
One of their rare days off in Minneapolis coincided with a break in Home Free's touring schedule, so Tim Foust came to hang out with his Sing-Off colleagues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
The Filharmonic from The Sing-Off season 4 and the first tour were the openers for all three southern California stops. Jeremy Lewis from the AcoUstiKats also came to visit at the Los Angeles show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jazz a cappella group m-pact opened for the Riverside, CA show, which reunited VoicePlay with their pal Jarrett Johnson, who had helped with their 2012 album, "Once Upon An Ever After".
.
The boys got to see DeeDee Yancey again when Ten opened for the final two nights in Dallas and Houston.
Tumblr media
.
Side trips & meal times
There wasn't much time in the schedule for tourist activities, but some of the guys did manage to see a few sights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there were many snacks and meals along the way.
Tumblr media
.
Press coverage
There were several nice write-ups about the show in various outlets, both before and during its run, as well as a few television appearances.
A pre-tour interview with Geoff covered the a cappella scene in general and gave hints of the tour to come. The resulting article by Alan Sculley appeared in both The Sun Chronicle (Attleboro, MA) and the Detroit Free Press.
A very nice recap of the Providence, RI show by Jathan Fink was published on the website for the New Bedford, MA talk radio station and on his personal blog.
When the tour passed back through NYC, VoicePlay stopped in to visit with Nick Lachey at his new gig on VH1's Big Morning Buzz. The guys also got to meet actress Jane Lynch and social media darling ToastMeetsWorld while they were there. The video doesn't seem to be available anywhere anymore, but there are still a few pictures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alix Jansma of Boston University's Daily Free Press had nothing but praise for music director Deke Sharon โ€” an alumnus of both Tufts University and Berklee College of Music โ€” and the tour itself, particularly VoicePlay's set.
Local outlets in Florida were, of course, proud to have VoicePlay bringing the show back to their home state. The Broward Palm Beach New Times had a nice preview interview with Geoff by Natalya Jones for the Coral Springs stop, and Boca Raton Magazine published a lovely recap.
Crew member Jacklyn Krol provided a backstage peek on the Stage Right Secrets blog.
The VoicePlay boys had an early morning appearance on the local NBC affiliate in Kansas City to promote the tour, show off their talents, and give the hosts an impromptu a cappella lesson:
If you've made it all the way to the end of yet another very long post, I hope you enjoyed yourself, and maybe found something interesting.
