Bagua Zhang is Like a Dragon – Advanced Levels

1. Level Two: Bagua 64 Palms – The Trunk of the Bagua Tree

We move into level two of Bagua Zhang training from level one, the fundamentals. Level two focuses on the Bagua 64 palms, probably the most familiar form of Bagua Zhang to most people. However, there are many versions, and almost every Bagua school has its own unique set. Many (including myself at one time) even believed it was the only form of Bagua Zhang.

The height and straightness of a tree depend on its trunk, which determines its future and is very important. The 64 Palms are like this. Their importance lies in practicing how to handle changes and enhancing this ability. However, if a student sees only the trunk and not the whole tree (roots, branches, leaves, flowers, fruits), knowing only the 64 Palms without understanding the entire Bagua Zhang system is a narrow view and doesn't equate to a proper understanding of Bagua Zhang.

In the Wutan School of Chinese Martial Arts, the Bagua 64 Palms include solo practice and partner drills. Just as Ba Mu Zhang (Eight Mother Palms), Xiao Kai Men (Small Opening Door), and Si Xing Ba Zhang (Four Animals Eight Palms) involve same-trigram pair drills, the 64 Palms involve changes between upper and lower trigrams. Grandmaster Liu Yun Qiao once reminded me that in Bagua Zhang, besides practicing steps in circular arcs, one should find partners for drills and frequently change partners to adhere to Bagua Zhang's concept of seeking novelty and change. Master Adam Hsu and our Jason Tsou Kung Fu Academy have both promoted the paired practice of the 64 Palms, with sides A and B engaging in two-person drills where offensive and defensive techniques and positions continuously change, making it more complex than the mirror-image practice of Xiao Kai Men and Ba Mu Zhang. The saying "Han Xin commands troops, the more, the better" applies to Bagua Zhang in that more varied practice aids martial progress.

The principles of partner drills are no more than Tian Shi (timing), Di Li (position), and Ren He (coordination), which means adeptly seizing the right timing, constantly adjusting to advantageous positions, and sharply coordinating with the opponent's force. This stage requires full-body tactile awareness, emphasizing sticking to the stake with all body parts and focusing on the twisting and coiling energy of "rolling, turning, Thrusting, and wrapping."

2. Level Three: Bagua Chuan Lin (Through the Forest) Palm– The Branches of the Bagua Tree

A tree's branches are dense and complex, even more so in a dark forest. This stage aims to train how to enter and exit the forest unharmed.

Most people may be unfamiliar with Bagua Chuan Lin Palm. Its full name is Long Xing Bagua You Shen Chuan Lin Lian Huan Palm. It's too long to remember easily, so it's simply called Chuan Lin Palm or Forest Palm. As the name suggests, practicing this palm is like entering a forest where one must constantly avoid branches and other obstacles while continually seeking a way out. Similarly, when practicing the routine, although there is no forest ahead, one should imagine it in their mind, constantly changing direction, speed, and height to move freely, using twisting energy throughout. It's best to set up multiple stakes for this palm, practicing like a butterfly flitting among flowers. Besides practicing on the stakes, one should also practice off the stakes, not indeed leaving but practicing the ability to sense from the body's external magnetic field.

Why leave the stakes? In each stage, Bagua Zhang trains in combat techniques. In the first two levels, we focus on one-on-one fighting. However, this level advances to dealing with multiple opponents, pushing changes to the extreme, making "neither close nor distant" necessary. Facing many opponents, one should avoid entanglement, practice with fellow students, fend off many with few, hit and then run, and not linger in battle. Escaping unscathed is not about luck but speed, intuition, wisdom, and experience. Forest Palm is highly challenging and demanding, and mastering it signifies becoming a Bagua Zhang expert.

八卦猶龍－進階篇

第二階 八卦64 掌：八卦樹之樹幹

第一階為基礎，進入第二階就是一般人最熟悉的八卦64掌了，然而其版本眾多，幾乎每一個八卦教室都有它們的專屬，還被許多人(包括當年的我) 認為它是八卦掌唯一的套路。

一顆樹長得高不高，直不直當然看樹幹，它決定了樹的未來，十分重要，64掌亦复如此。其重要性是磨練如何應付變化，並將此能力提昇。不過學者如果只見樹幹不見樹的全貌，(樹根，樹枝，樹葉，花，果子). 只知64 掌而不知整個八卦掌體系，以偏概全那就不算對八卦掌有真正的了解。

武壇的八卦64 掌套路不只是單練還有雙人對練。如同八母掌，小開門，與四形八掌是八卦同卦的對練，而64掌是上下卦的變化，師爺曾經提醒我八卦掌除了要以圓弧練步，要找人對練套路。更要經常更換對手，此乃八卦掌求新求變的觀念。徐紀師伯與我們龍驤武壇均有推動64對掌，分甲乙兩方雙人對練，兩邊攻防技術與位置不斷變化，比起小開門八母掌的鏡像對掌當然更為複雜。成語 “韓信將兵，多多益善”，對八卦掌而言，越多變化的練習對武術的進步越有幫助。

雙人練習的原則不外乎是：天時(時機),地利(位置), 人和(協調). 也就是要有機靈地掌握適當時機，不斷地調整有利位置，敏銳地的協調對方的力道。此階要有全方位的觸覺， 因此，此階段的上樁功要強調全身各部位與樁的貼靠並強調滾鑽爭裹的纏絲勁。

第三階 八卦穿林掌：八卦樹的樹枝

一顆樹的樹枝密密麻麻地，已是複雜，更不用說到了黑壓壓的森林裡。進入後如何全身而出就是訓練此階的目的。

一般人對於八卦穿林掌可能陌生， 其全名是龍形八卦游身穿林連環掌。 太長了，不容易記得住，故簡稱穿林掌。顧名思義， 練習此掌就如同進入森林除了要不停躲避樹枝等障礙物，還要不斷找尋出路。同理而言，練習套路時前方無林但心中有林，要求不斷地改變方位，速度，高低， 要練到進退自如， 以纏絲勁貫穿全局。此掌上樁訓練最好能設立多個樁，練習如穿花蛺蝶般地在樁間游走。上樁之餘尚不忘離樁。然非真離，乃若即若離。練得是我們身外磁場的感應能力。

為何要離樁呢？ 八卦掌每階都是訓練打法， 第一二階， 我們還停留在一對一的打法， 此階更上一層樓， 要做到對付多人，將變化推向極致， “若即若離”成了必要。面對眾多敵手絕對不可纏鬥，與同門操練，以寡禦眾，打了就跑，不可戀戰。 能衝出重圍全身而出不是靠運氣，靠的是速度，感覺，機智，與經驗。穿林掌難度甚大，要求極高，練就了即是八卦掌高手。
