"Jason Belsky: 2014 somewhere in Connecticut. Before Coach Lasso was even a show, it was just a satire piece of promo media for NBC Sports. I got a call from a production looking for a black original mini Cooper. Little did I know Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt would be waiting at the other end of that call. Crazy how time flies."

NYSEA‘s second annual Long Beach Skate Jam for Street & Bowl was a blast! With 80+ registered contestants, it was competitive and exciting. On a hot Sunday by the bay, the kids’ street contest kicked off with 9 heats. Everyone was impressively talented, and the winners were awarded trophies and prizes from several sponsors. Congrats to Tim Drake for first place, Oscar Johnson in close second and Jake Pellicane taking third.

The contest was held at the new skatepark in Long Beach, completed in 2015 by Spohn Ranch Skateparks. Located only a few blocks from the LIRR station, the park was flooded with skaters and spectators. There were complimentary snacks and swag from Essential Water, Clif Bars, La Colombe Coffee, Honest Tea and YETI coolers. TETON Gravity Research rolled up with their epic party trailer and media patio, which included a dope rooftop for judges to see all the action from above!

During golden hour the anticipated bowl contest begun. With a race against the setting sun the heats were rapid and intense. The bowl is an amoeba shape, with pockets and walls ranging from 3-7 feet- Contestants were blasting huge airs and getting pretty tech. Judging the contest wasn’t easy, everyone was on fire! Tyler Collins took first place, Nick McDonough in second and Charlie Weiss in third. Special shoutout to Tom Mullens for crushing it all damn day.

2021 reading list
Books re-read:
- Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Your Routine, Find Your Focus, and Sharpen Your Creative Mind
by Jocelyn K. Glei (Editor), Scott Belsky (Forward)
- Fractured Lands: How the Arab World Came Apart
by Scott Anderson
- A Room with a View
by E.M. Forster
- The Hero With a Thousand Faces
by Joseph Campbell
Novel:
Possession: A Romance
by A.S. Byatt
Station Eleven
by Emily St. John Mandel
The Beach House
(Beach House #1)
by Mary Alice Monroe
The Sirens of Titan
by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Slaughterhouse-Five
by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Billy Summers
by Stephen King
A Gift of Time
by Jerry Merritt
The Original
by Brandon Sanderson
Feminism:
Betraying Big Brother: The Feminist Awakening in China
by Leta Hong Fincher
Feminism is for Everybody: Passionate Politics
by bell hooks
A Room of One's Own
by Virginia Woolf
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
(Maya Angelou's Autobiography #1)
by Maya Angelou
Politics and History:
China Unbound: A New World Disorder
by Joanna Chiu
How Propaganda Works
by Jason F. Stanley
Espionage and Covert Operations: A Global History
by Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius
The Origins of Totalitarianism
by Hannah Arendt
The Reporter Who Knew Too Much: The Mysterious Death of What's My Line TV Star and Media Icon Dorothy Kilgallen
by Mark Shaw
Others:
The Art of Being
by Erich Fromm
Fromm
The Power of Vulnerability: Teachings of Authenticity, Connections and Courage
by Brené Brown
The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure
by Jonathan Haidt, Greg Lukianoff
Me & Other Writing
by Marguerite Duras
by Ng Kim Chew, 黃錦樹
Tree: A Life Story
by David Suzuki, Wayne Grady, Peter Wohlleben (Foreword)
Aspects of the Novel
by E.M. Forster

Significance
Genome-wide association study (GWAS) discoveries about educational attainment have raised questions about the meaning of the genetics of success. These discoveries could offer clues about biological mechanisms or, because children inherit genetics and social class from parents, education-linked genetics could be spurious correlates of socially transmitted advantages. To distinguish between these hypotheses, we studied social mobility in five cohorts from three countries. We found that people with more education-linked genetics were more successful compared with parents and siblings. We also found mothers’ education-linked genetics predicted their children’s attainment over and above the children’s own genetics, indicating an environmentally mediated genetic effect. Findings reject pure social-transmission explanations of education GWAS discoveries. Instead, genetics influences attainment directly through social mobility and indirectly through family environments.

Unisex releases new single 'Let the Tide Take You'
Tumblr media
The songwriters and producers of indie rock music known as Unisex have released their latest official single, “Let the Tide Take You.” It is the debut single from their upcoming debut album, “Powerful Situations,” due for release 23 April 2021. It has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry on the Campers' Rule Records label. Described variously as indie rock, jangle pop, indie pop, tropical and psychedelic or art rock, music on “Powerful Situations” such as “Let the Tide Take You” will appeal fans of independent rock everywhere.
Unisex cite as main artistic influences a colorful amalgam of rock across the last six decades. These include Talking Heads, CAN, Beach Boys, Richard Swift, Jason Molina, Eliot Smith, Camera Obscura, Nina Simone, the Sea and Cake, Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill, The Byrds, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Santigold, Thundercat, and Alice Coltrane. Informed by the qualities and stylistic nuances of all the above, “Let the Tide Take You” by Unisex has something for fans of many music categories.
A second single from their “Powerful Situations” LP, “Fake Banksy,” is scheduled to appear 6 April.
Unisex are Brian Russ (guitar, vocals), Brad Connolley (bass, drums, vocals), Billy Fidler (drums), and Connor Zarkowski (keys, bass). Also appearing on their record are Amos Rose (keys), Meredith Meyer (vocals), and Daniel Belski (guitar). A musical statement of our time, Unisex music was already being composed, performed and recorded online by 2018. By the time COVID-19 forced every US act into virtual space, Unisex had already compiled much of what would become their debut LP, “Powerful Situations.” The record is among the first to have been entirely incepted from four disparate American locales, namely Brooklyn, NY; Nashville, TN; Los Angeles, CA; and Missoula, MT.
Asked to describe the overall theme of “Let the Tide Take You,” Unisex writes that it suggests “simply giving up and giving in, knowing that consumerism and capitalism will one day consume us all.” Other tracks on the LP are even more sociopolitical, such as “Address to United Nations” about ex-President Donald Trump spreading nationalism and threatening nuclear war at the 2016 UN Summit. It also refers to the Parkland shooting, the spreading of diseases on NYC subways (prophetically penned before the pandemic), the culture of fake news, fake tans, and botox treatments.
“The paranoid feeling we now live with,” Unisex write, “of always needing to be ready to be attacked, the death of young artists before their prime, why some people hate their mothers, why so many useless plastic products get shipped around the globe on those menacing massive cargo boats, the gathering of white supremicist groups and the rise of hate crimes in the Trump era ... These are all themes on our debut record.”
Ultimately, Unisex's upcoming debut LP blatantly claims, “Everybody is full of sh-t.”
“Overall, it's a gas!” they write.
Unisex's own official website describes “Powerful Situations” as “written as an initial reaction to the Trump presidency” which “molded itself, magically, into a response to the pandemic. It was worked on both pre and post covid. But Brian Russ knew in his heart that it needed to be completed before the 2020 election. Now it lives as a stamp in time, reminding us of what we went through for four years, and begging us to learn and grow for all that we have survived through.”
“We're tiny little specks on this tiny little stone,” writes Russ, quoting the song dedicated to his four-year-old daughter, Bernadette. “People sometimes forget that we share this little home.”
The members of Unisex are all established musicians who have toured around the country with previous acts and played on stages ranging from Red Rocks Ampitheatre to the Bowery Ballroom and Brooklyn Steel.
“Let the Tide Take You” by Unisex is available from Campers' Rule Records at over 500 quality digital music stores online worldwide now. Get in early, indie music fans.

Do you remember "Truth in advertising"? This series is kicking that off its inside-joke throne with style. An updated look at the world of making commercials, warts and all.
Community Films’ directorial collective JEAN and director Pam Thomas have joined forces to create “Commercials”, a comedic web series about the humorous, ego crushing, overanalyzed silliness that plagues the world of commercial film making and everyone involved.
“As Commercial directors and former advertising creatives, we’ve experienced hundreds of completely ridiculous moments during productions where we looked at each other and said, ‘this needs to be a show,’” says Natalie Prisco of JEAN.
Seizing on the seemingly important, but altogether ridiculous scenarios that inherently go along with making commercials, “Commercials” peels back the curtain on an industry that everyone is familiar with, but very few know much about.
“The world of commercial making is such a unique industry that feels so ripe for satire,” says Eric Eckelman of JEAN
Told from the unique point of view of an eccentric group of egomaniacal, yet wildly insecure commercial directors and their production company, Bird Films, “Commercials” satirizes the world of production as The Office did the world of 9-5ers.
Each episode gives a glimpse into the various aspects of commercial making and stages of production, leaving nobody unskewered in the process.
“We’d love Commercials to give viewers a sneak peek into what we love so much about our business and hope they find it as hilarious and fun as we do,” says Pam Thomas.
“We’re thrilled we finally decided to make that show,” adds Armand Prisco of Jean.
Episode 101: ‘ETHNICALLY AMBIGUOUS’
Nate, Maggie and the agency team try to figure out how to navigate an unexpected client request. This one feels as real as it gets, this happens. A lot.
This video is currently being processed. Please wait.
Episode 102: ‘REALLY GREAT MEETING’
Nate and Jay may or may not have totally nailed their Snackyz presentation. Or maybe not. Maybe.
This video is currently being processed. Please wait.
Episode 103: ‘MANTRUM’
TRUE STORY - the last time I heard a story about a director locked in a car delaying the shoot, he was also eating bowls of cereal in there. Nate uses the oldest trick in the book to lure the out of his mind director Axel Roundhouse back to set.
This video is currently being processed. Please wait.
Episode 104: ‘FULL CLOCKS’
Directing team Tom and Dave learn the art of the full clock.
This video is currently being processed. Please wait.
Episode 105: ‘GUYS AND DOLLS’
A seemingly mundane Pre-Production meeting goes off the rails.
This video is currently being processed. Please wait.
About JEAN
JEAN, pronounced like the pants that are made of denim, is comprised of Eric Eckelman, Armand Prisco and Natalie Prisco. Known for their comedy chops, and pulling believably odd performances out of their actors, they have created comedy-driven work for Lifetime, Delta, Pizza Hut, AT&T, Honda, TBS and Visa. Armand & Nat got their start working as a creative team at McCann before they went over to write and direct for MTV. There, they met Eric who was also a writer and director for the acclaimed network.
  About Pam Thomas
Pam Thomas began her career at MTV, back when it was cool, in the late 1980s, writing and directing promos in the On-Air Promotions Department. Pam has worked with dozens of brands and agencies to produce a huge body of work, including spots for Gatorade, Nike, Visa, AMEX, Payless, Lexus, Wal-Mart, Dove, Verizon, Cheerios, Pantene and Cotton featuring celebrities Zooey Deschanel, Kate Bosworth, Emmy Rossum, and Hayden Panetierre. Pam’s style of work portrays an essence of glamour, fashion and creativity. Her sense of humor and knack for getting great performances, is evident in her TV work on Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives and more recently on the Netflix series Atypical with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rappaport.
