The Timeless Beauty of Hyakunin Isshu: An Odyssey of Translation through Classical Japanese Poetry. 100-Days of Translation - Day 1
The Timeless Beauty of Hyakunin Isshu: An Odyssey of Translation through Classical Japanese Poetry. 100-Days of Translation - Day 1
Let’s step into a realm of poetic brilliance. Together we’ll embark on a journey through the exquisite world of Hyakunin Isshu (百人一首), a collection of one hundred masterful poems from classical Japan. The most famous and standard version was compiled by Fujiwara no Teika (1162–1241) while he lived in the Ogura district of Kyoto.[1] It is therefore also known as Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (小倉百人一首). I…

My father's home
My father’s home
I wrote this tanka prose on the 26th of November; two years since my dad passed.
The tanka prose is based on my visit in September to the place where my father bought his first house. The house was in a most sought-after locale and I remember, dad, being very proud of it. I was around nine at the time and I remember the joy in my parent’s eyes when they performed the housewarming ceremony in the…

Spring or Fall: Which is Better?
Since antiquity in Japan, poets have debated which is better: spring or fall. #Japan #poetry #fall #spring #Manyoshu #JapanesePoetry
As fall is approaching, I wanted to share an interesting anecdote provided by my book on the Manyoshu. It seems that throughout Japanese antiquity, poets frequently debated which is better: spring or fall.
The first example comes from Princess Nukata in the 7th century, whom we discussed here and here, she wrote a lengthy poem (a chōka poem, not the usual tanka poem) in the Manyoshu (poem 16).…

What themes do you tend to gravitate towards? - This is from a piece I'm working on called, In His Eyes. I started working on this early last year, less than a month before my father unexpectedly passed away. - It's a senryu, a Japanese short poetry form made up of three unrhymed lines that focus on human nature from a cynical or darkly comedic perspective. - I really like the senryu because it's a bit darker and pushes you to express an idea with very little space. - But since my father's unexpected passing, I find myself returning to this poem over and over. I feel like I have more to say and explore in this piece. - #poetry #poetrycommunity #poetryisnotdead #instapoetry #poetryofinstagram #poetrylovers #bymepoetry #poetrygram #igpoetry #poetryislife #poetrysociety #poetryofig #micropoetry #poetryinmotion #herheartpoetry #sadpoetry #poetryislove #poetrycommunityofinstagram #japanesepoetry #japanesepoetrystyle #traditionaljapanesepoetry #senryu #poeticforms #lost #mourning #grief #griefjourney #griefandloss #dealingwithgrief #fathersanddaughters ------------ https://www.instagram.com/p/CRZPAJELIum/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today’s poem is from the first poetry collection I ever bought: THE INK DARK MOON (Love Poems by Ono no Komachi and Izumi Shikoku, Women of the Ancient Court of Japan), translated by Jane Hirshfield, from @vintagebooks. This particular one is Shikibu. She has just taken Prince Atsumichi as a new lover. This #heianperiod #japanesepoetry dyed my own poems deeply. #izumishikibu #janehirshfield #poetryintranslation #poetrymonth2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B-pikIvgaBO/?igshid=1fyrjx4mhku4h
