A collection of random snippets from Roderick Strong's LiveJournal, 2004-2005
So, unlike people like Punk or Joe, he never used his LJ extensively; there are still some fun/interesting posts from 20 to 21-year-old Roddy, though. Screenshots under the cut (with alt text and occasional commentary):
Tumblr media
[the way he types always makes me laugh. So many exclamation points...]
Tumblr media
[More exclamation points. Also, didn't know he worked CZW.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[first time he worked IWA...wild.]
Tumblr media
[first PWG match! Also him going out with Steen, Generico, and his "best buddy" Shelley, LMAO]
Tumblr media
[Jamie Gibson becoming ROH champ, Punk leaving the indies, Roddy debuting the trunks, and them going to The Weiners Circle, which is thankfully not NSFW to read about.]
Tumblr media
[Watching the Joe/Kobashi match backstage must've been wild. Also aww his mentor match!]

My man Roderick Strong had to teach his old pal and stable-mate Kyle O'Reilly some respect at AEW Dynasty on Sunday, April 21st. Check out what Roddy said to his opponent before the match:
"Kyle, your comeback was sweet, and I swear to you, I smiled, and I cried because I was so happy to have you back. But I want you to know this. When we step into the ring, I am gonna break you, and I am gonna end you forever.”
Yikes. That's hot talk. Remind me to always respect Roderick Strong and consent to anything he asks of me.
The audience was solidly behind Kyle O'Reilly, but I've been into Roderick Strong, the Messiah of the Backbreaker, since his earliest days in Ring of Honor. I mean, how could I not love a wrestler who claims the Backbreaker as his signature move?!
I believe I first blogged about Roderick in July 2005 when I recapped a match where he punished Jamie Noble (another long-time ROH Man-Crush). At that time 19 years ago, I referred to Roderick as a "cocky kid" but nowadays he is all hard-ass veteran, willing to beat some respect into the younger generation.

On September 17th 1771, Tobias Smollett, Scottish novelist and playwright, died.
Smollett was an author and translator of the Scottish Enlightenment who lodged in Edinburgh with his sister at St John’s Pend on the Royal Mile.He was a tremendously popular author of what are broadly termed ‘picaresque’ novels of the late eighteenth century: The Adventures of Roderick Random, The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle , The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom and most famously The Expedition of Humphry Clinker.
He also translated Cervantes’ masterpiece Don Quixote in , championing the book in the English-speaking world through his popularity as a picaresque author.
Smollett was born of a good family in Dunbartonshire, on March 19, 1721, the third child of Archibald and Barbara Smollett. He studied medicine at the University of Glasgow during the 1730s, but he did not receive his formal medical degree from Marischal College, Aberdeen, until 1750. After a brief term as an apprentice surgeon in Glasgow in 1739, Smollett moved to London in order to pursue his literary ambitions. Financial necessity led him to take a post as surgeon's mate aboard H.M.S. Chichester in 1740. His grim exposure to life in the Royal Navy provided him with many of the vivid scenes of life at sea that he later incorporated into Roderick Random and other novels.
Smollett returned to London from the West Indies briefly in 1742, but he soon sailed back to Jamaica, where he married Anne Lassalls, an heiress, probably in 1743. In 1744, at the same time that he was trying to establish a medical practice in London, Smollett began to publish a series of minor poems and attempted unsuccessfully to have his first play, an ill-starred tragedy entitled The Regicide, produced. Of the occasional odes that Smollett published between 1744 and 1747, the best was his movingly patriotic The Tears of Scotland. The most noteworthy of his Juvenalian verse satires, Advice and Reproof, merely furthered his growing reputation as a quarrelsome Scotsman outraged by the refined vices of London.
For our Outlander fans, the books that is, in The Fiery Cross, Lord John Grey sends Jamie a copy of the newly published “The Expedition of Humphry Clinker” by Tobias Smollett. Further in that same book, Fraser’s Ridge library has another of Tobias Smollett’s works “The Adventures of Roderick Random“ and in A Breath of Snow and Ashes, Smollet is also mentioned.
Smollett is one of the 16 Scottish writers and poets depicted on the lower section of the Scott Monument in Princes Street, as in the second pic. He appears on the far left side of the east face. He also has a monument to his honour in beside Renton Primary School, Dunbartonshire.

IF THE WALLS COULD TALK, THEY’D TELL YOU HE USED TO BE A TEEN HEARTTHROB.

HIMBO RUGBY FULLBACK! DEFINITELY NOT THAT ACTOR GUY!
full name james caine dunwoody alias caine kelly nicknames jamie, jim age twenty-seven date of birth february 13, 1996 hometown kelso, scotland nationality american + scottish gender identity cis man pronouns he/him sexual orientation bisexual (somewhat closeted)
height 5’11” eye color blue hair color light brown tattoos none scars none
parents annabel dunwoody (barista), gabriel kelly (film exec, retired actor) siblings chloe kelly (younger half sister) roommate tbd significant other none teams rugby
your parents meet in glasgow: your father filming, your mother reaching for a dream bigger than a small life in a small town. this isn’t love. he leaves her with a baby, and she goes back to that small town. this is love: your ma scooping you up and putting you on the counter to help her cook, your grandpa playing catch for hours in the backyard, something tiny and tight knit and warm. your father comes back when you are old enough to be interesting. when you are old enough to be marketable. jamie dunwoody is whisked off to los angeles before anyone can  do a damn thing to stop it, and caine kelly is born.
you are a charming child and you grow into a pretty teen. your father knows how to market and you learn to be marketable. to flatten that distinctive accent into a blonde all-american boy next door. bit pieces, kid shit, until you are old enough to be every high school girl’s first fantasy. movies, magazines, modeling, a song or two, rumors about you and a member of some girl group you’ve never met before in your life. hair dye, dieting, invasive questions you learn to answer with easy laughter. you’re hot shit. you’re hollywood’s boyfriend.
you grow up. this in itself isn’t the problem: your career keeps booming, parts keep coming in. you are the problem. you don’t like, so much, to be looked at, and you are not so easy to control, not as desperate for your father’s love. you miss your ma, and sitting on the counter, and racing through backyards. after a downward spiral at twenty-one you walk out of a photoshoot and you never look back.
it takes years to learn how to be a person. you find yourself in little moments: making cranachan, your first proper go at rugby, planting your ma’s favorite flowers and watching her smile. to be jamie again, the dunwoody lad, and absolutely nothing else. you decide, eventually, that university would do you some good: new location, new opportunities, new education. you’ve settled in roots and you’d like now to grow. you have the smarts and the money for daskalos, and, well – not the commonest resume. with your new old name and sharp accent and glasses and lack of bottle blonde, with your utter disappearance from pop culture and entirely new demeanor, you’ve no interest in telling anyone you were ever anything but jamie, their fullback, friendly face and warm teasing and open shoulder to lean on.
love is a cautious desire, to be handled with care. you’re pretty still, and you’ve learned to be alright with admiring eyes. the need for something deeper – the romanticism you can’t quite shake – sits quietly in your chest, in need of coaxing. you’d like to love somebody. you think you might be good at it, if you can trust you’ll be wanted as more than another fuck.

Here is, at last, an itemized list of my various problems and thoughts with The Fall of the House of Usher. Before you block, unfollow, report, and make a callout post, please be aware that I have an extensive blackmail list. Grazie
Flanagan is flanagan and incapable of not being moralizing and didactic. I think he takes one of Stephen King's problems to the nth degree which is a kind of... sentimentalism and a belief that Good Can Come From Horror. The need for horror to be meaningful and redemptive and in some capacity... joyous? Or at least morally Useful in the fashion of Victorian lit? doesn't make amazing art
He needs to let go of constantly casting his wife and their friends. Every time he brings in someone who's not in the "inner circle" they contribute more strongly and effectively than everyone else.
Case in point, Mary McDonnell. I know I came into the show liking her due to BSG Brainrot and Laura Roslin Pussy Disease, but frankly she can be inconsistent especially with bad directing; whereas here I think she actually provides a very strong foundation because, even though she's working with substandard material, she doesn't have to stretch herself very far to play Steely, Soft-Spoken Matriarch so she does ok--and "ok" is better than a lot of the rest of the cast. Same thing with Mark Hamill: he was such a bright point in this show and it was a great use of his skills in transforming physically as well as vocally. Carl Lumbly similarly did his absolute best with shite material and his role as being functionally a prop/occasional commentator in the frame narration.
The same thing happened when he brought in T'Nia Miller in Bly Manor and she blew the roof off that show. But now she's folded into the inner circle and she does amazing with what she's got, but pLEASE free her.
STOP. CASTING. KATE SIEGEL. PLEASE!!!!! And STOP casting that man playing Young Roderick, he gave NOTHING to the role, he contributed NOTHING. Mr. Gerald's Game literally carried the Roderick characterization all on his own. Can we say if he did well? Perhaps he didn't. But he was putting in the work.
There is an obsessive need to do too much, all at once, that really kills whatever minor crumbs of decent writing or atmosphere they manage to sprinkle around. Why do we need so many references to Poe that have so little to do with the original stories? Wouldn't it be more effective to pick 2-3 and do them right in a more tightly written story than to swing the bat at 8-10 works and maybe only hit 1 or 2 out of the park?
😭 listen, I'm not a genius nor can I or would I ever claim to understand the Black experience. But I certainly doubt a gay Black man in a government job in the 1970s would namedrop his male partner to a complete, white, heterosexual stranger, not even as a manipulative technique to create false intimacy or camaraderie. (Similar thing happened in Bly Manor where a Black woman who wanted to be a high-powered lawyer(?) took a job as a lawyer(?)'s NANNY to try to get a career opportunity with him? Um?) (Question marks after each instance of lawyer because I remember VERY little about the show honestly.)
The treatment of bisexuality as this decadent bourgeois predatory sexuality is actually INSANE in Usher. Please believe me when I say I am pro "bad rep," but Flanagan does not have a good history of thoughtful treatment of sexual minorities, especially female ones (cf. treatment of Trish [also an example of exoticising and marginalizing racism] and Theo [and to some extent Nell] in Hill House, the Jamie/Dani storyline in Bly Manor). And the way sex overall is portrayed and handled is soooo Everyone Is Beautiful And No One Is Horny.
There is this problem with all of Flanagan's adaptations, and Bryan Fuller does the same thing (I've seen it in both Hannibal and American Gods), where they just wholesale poach lines from the author's narration or other works and give it to their characters as dialogue. In this one they even have the grotesque indecency to have Roderick be the "author" of multiple of Poe's poems. HOW? WHY? HOW? WHY? Additionally, when they do this with the narration, it doesn't make sense as dialogue. Human beings don't talk like that except in very rare instances or if they're very pretentious. It just doesn't make sense. It's a failure of writing and imagination on the adaptor's part because they're not confident in their ability to visually create the atmosphere that the written line conjured and it's actually pathetic.

Both Broadway and off Broadway have turned to period pieces and history pieces as of late; good examples are "Lenimpika" and "Suffs". In "Empire", the musical is based on what is the most beautiful building ever built, the Empire State Building in New York City.
This musical surprised me to the upside... it did not receive either critical, nor audience acclaim when it opened, however, it is worth going to see.
The musical treats us to a really great set (looks a lot like an art studio with all its clutter). Walt Spangler deftly has the back of the stage doubling as both a neat subway exit and a platform for multi purposes where the actors under superb direction by Cady Huffman are able to use the space creatively. The music by Sherman & Hull and the choreography by Lorna Ventura make "Empire" a pleasant show to watch.
While the cast doesn't really have any big names, they blend and act well together. Kaitlyn Davidson as Frances Wolodsky commands her role as well as the stage. She is the go-to woman behind the scenes that gets this behemoth built. Paul Salvatoriello as Al Smith and Albert Guerzon as Charles Kinney give us the push-pull effect on getting the 102 story building built on time. Public perception is everything and both the Governor and Mayor need to put a positive spin on this depression era where spending has all but dried up.
On top of the pleasant songs, what really sticks out is the lighting by Jamie Roderick. In using bigger light fixtures in this musical, Roderick washes the stage with brilliant periwinkle purples, orangish reds that lock in the actors, the set and the costumes (Tina McCartney costumes). Roderick is brilliant here with the lighting structure, especially in the more edgy dance numbers that Lorna Ventura puts forth for the audience to relish in. The sound too by Shannon Slaton gives a nice undercurrent throughout. The musical has its macabre moments where death is inevitable, Slaton brings the emotion front and center with temperament of the situation at hand.
At two hours and thirty minutes, the actors have a lot to say, and they say and sing it well. The musical never lags: the first act, which is an hour and a half flies by because the plot has so much to say with a nice compliment of music. The second act which is much shorter rounds out the stronger first act.
"Empire" at New World Stages is enjoyable and it is recommended.

Next up is Six Characters at the Claire Tow Theatre at Lincoln Center. It will be interesting to see if they keep it to tradition,or if they bring it into the modern. The Tow, as well as the other two theater's at Lincoln Center have been more progressive in the last few years; some of it works, most of it doesn't. This year, as well as next, has some interesting plays coming to the Center and it will be curious to see how the direction goes and in what direction the plays move in.

This summer season continues into August with "Once Upon A Mattress" at the Hudson Theatre in previews. Later this summer two more will open, one with Patti LuPone and the other at Theatre 555. The fall season is also shaping up to be a good one with a full compliment of both plays and musicals coming to the "Great White Way".
Broadway, Hollywood, Patti LuPone, "Alladin", "Harry Potter", "Back To The Future", "Othello", Tony Awards, New York City, Bryant Park, off Broadway, Theater, Obie Awards.
