summary: it was subtle at first. the way she mirrored your movements, your interests, your life. and then, she set her sights on the one thing that was yours—jamie.

It started with the little things.

You’d mention a new book you were reading, and suddenly, she was reading it too. You’d tell her about your favorite coffee shop, and the next day, she was posting about it on her story like she’d been going there for years. It was flattering at first — having a friend who seemed to admire you, who wanted to be around you. But then it started to feel off.

Jamie noticed before you did.

“She’s always around” he said one night, flipping through channels while you curled into his side “Like, she just appears out of nowhere. Even at the rink, and I know she doesn’t care about hockey”

You’d laughed it off “She’s just being friendly”

But then came the shifts — the way she started dressing like you, how her music taste suddenly aligned with yours, how she dropped phrases you used like they were her own. And then, Jamie.

At first, it was innocent enough. She’d ask about him, about your relationship, about what he was like when it was just the two of you. She’d make jokes about stealing him, lighthearted and playful, but the longer it went on, the less funny it became.

Because it wasn’t a joke anymore.

One night, she let it slip.

“I don’t get it” she said, swirling her drink as she sat across from you “You two are so different. He’s more… me than you”

You stared at her, a sinking feeling growing in your stomach “What’s that supposed to mean?”

She shrugged “I just think he and I have more in common, that’s all”

The words burned, sharp and cruel under the guise of casual conversation.

And then the texts started. You saw the way she’d linger when Jamie was around, how she laughed a little too hard at his jokes, how she found excuses to text him. He showed you, every time.

“She keeps asking me for ‘advice’” he told you, his face twisted in discomfort as he handed you his phone. What would you do if your friend was dating the wrong guy?

You clenched your jaw.

You weren’t imagining things.

And maybe she wasn’t saying it outright, but her intentions were clear — she wanted Jamie, and she thought she deserved him more than you did.

It all came to a head at a party.

She was standing too close, her hand on his arm, her voice low as she whispered something to him. You watched from across the room as Jamie took a step back, shaking his head.

Then, he turned and walked straight to you.

“Can we go?” he asked, jaw tight, frustration evident in his eyes.

You didn’t ask why. You already knew.

The ride home was quiet until Jamie finally spoke.

“She told me I should be with someone who ‘really gets me’” His fingers tightened on the steering wheel “She meant her”

You exhaled sharply, anger bubbling under your skin.

“Do you see it now?” Jamie asked, glancing over at you “She’s not your friend. She never was”

And he was right.

Because real friends don’t steal your life.

And they sure as hell don’t try to steal your boyfriend.

This was a dumb idea but you couldn’t help it. Your friends were all the time picking on you because you were single and none of the guys were enough for you. When for the hundredth time they were joking, you admitted that you’re dating someone. This was a complete lie. You were single and didn’t even try to find a boyfriend. They were asking you to bring your secret boyfriend so they could meet him and you know you have to figure out something. 

You were desperate to find someone just to shut your friends mouths and in that moment you decided to ask Jamie to help you with this. He was your childhood friend and, just like you, he was single. At first he was sceptical but eventually he agreed after seeing how helpless you are. It is supposed to be a one time thing.

Your friends were in awe when you brought Jamie because they thought that you’re bluffing. Unfortunately, he got along with your friends and one time turned into a weekly visit in a bar with your friends. You two tried to act like a couple but it was awkward. You were sure that soon, your friends will find out that you’re messing with them. 

This hasn't happened. They all thought that you two are not a PDA couple but they could sense the chemistry between you two. A month into your fake relationship, Jamie saw in a different spotlight. He realised that he’s falling for you. He knew it was bad since you two are not even dating. It was all planned to prove to your friends that you have a boyfriend. That’s why he didn’t say a word about his feelings. 

You didn’t know what to think. One part of you was picturing you and Jamie as a real couple but the other one was telling you that’s not real and you shouldn’t fall for your friend. That’s why you made a decision that brought consequences that you couldn’t imagine. 

“We’re done Jamie. I mean with the fake dating. It’s pointless to have it anytime longer, especially since you’re coming back to Philadelphia in a couple days” You said and hugged him. “Thank you so much for doing this tho. I really appreciate it” 

Jamie stood there hurt and confused. He didn’t think that ending your fake dating will hurt him that much. He hugged you back but couldn't erase his feelings and what you two built in the past month. He didn’t want to show you how much it hurt him. 

“Yeah, no big deal. Happy that I could help you” Jamie casually said back. 

For you, everything came back to normal. You still talked with Jamie but he was acting off. You didn’t know why but assumed that’s related to the fact that he’s back in training, preparing for the new season. The reality was that he couldn’t stop the feeling he had to you and it was killing him that it was over. 

Jamie was well aware that it’s stupid because you two weren’t even dating for real but for him, this fake relationship was everything. He wanted to fight back for you but he felt like it was pointless. That’s why he decided to keep you on distance, before he moved on. When he was slowly drifting away, you realised that you ruined what you two had and in fact, you had strong feelings towards him. You wanted to save it but didn’t know how. 

Christmas came and Jamie returned home. He didn’t know that yours and his family were planning to spend this time together. You two were friends since kindergarten and your families bonded together. During the dinner, both of you acted suspicious because you two barely said a word to each other. After the dinner, it was a time when your and his family were sitting in a living room spending time talking and drinking. 

It was too much for you. The awkwardness was killing you and you decided to go to the garden. You sat on a chair and looked into the sky. It was your way to calm down and collect all the thoughts. You didn't hear the door opening until someone sat on the chair next to you. 

“Hi” You heard Jamie.

“Hi? That’s all you have to say?” You scoffed.

“What’s your problem?” Jamie asked, confused.

“You are my problem. You started keeping distance between us when you returned to Philadelphia and now all you have to say to me is hi? Yeah, no thanks” You knew you were too harsh on him but you needed to let your emotions go.

“I needed to think about us. What was between us” Jamie said and you looked at him. “I have one question for you. After that we can just move on and forget about summer. Do you regret it?” He looked into your eyes. 

“I don’t regret that we’ve been in this fake relationship but I do regret ending this. I thought that’s gonna be better for both of us but when you started keeping your distance I realised that I have feelings for you and this was bad to end it” You replied truthfully. “Why are you asking?” 

“Because I feel something similar. This fake relationship made me realise that I’m in love with you and when you said that it’s over…” Jamie took a deep breath. “I don’t know why but it really affected me. I thought that we had something special but you said this so casually that I felt like I’ve been imagining things” 

There was silence between the two of you. You and Jamie started thinking about each other's words. You broke the silence.

“Do you think we can try again? As a real couple now?” You asked him, scared of what you might hear.

“Yes. I’m willing to try for real now” Jamie smiled at you and grabbed your hand. It was a new beginning for both of you.

hello!! the annual ao3 year in review had some friends and i thinking - wouldn't it be cool if we had a hockey rpf specific version of that. so i went ahead and collated the data below!!

i scraped a total of 4266 fanfics that dated themselves as published or finished in the year 2024. of these 4000 odd fanfics, the most popular ships were:

Note: "Minor or Background Relationship(s)" clocked in at #9 with 91 fics, but I removed it as it was always a secondary tag and added no information to the chart. I did not discern between primary ship and secondary ship(s) either!

breaking down the 5 most popular ships over the course of the year, we see:

super interesting to see that HUGE jump for mattdrai in june/july for the stanley cup final. the general lull in the offseason is cool to see as well.

as for the most popular tags in all 2024 hockey rpf fic...

i got curious here about which AUs were the most popular, so i filtered down for that. note that i only regex'd for tags that specifically start with "Alternate Universe - ", so A/B/O and some other stuff won't appear here!
