Favorites : Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)
Tumblr media
I love martial arts movies.  I love revenge films.  I love the films of Quentin Tarantino.  I’m pretty sure this is why sometime in 2001 or 2002, when I heard the news of Kill Bill being in the development stages, I knew I was in for a treat.  The premise sounded strong, the cast connected to it at that time was already stellar, and Tarantino was hitting a stride unparalleled in regards to his creative abilities and box office draw.  Needles to say, Kill Bill Vol. 1 hit the general viewing public like an atomic bomb, firmly cementing Quentin Tarantino as a legend.
B------ (Uma Thurman) is dead set on revenge after being left for dead by her former lover Bill (David Carradine) and her former team, the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad.  After recovering from being shot in the head by Bill, B------ revives her Black Mamba (former code name) mentality in hopes of crossing names off of her literal kill list.  (NOTE : due to the serialized format of the Kill Bill saga, Vol. 1 focuses on Black Mamba’s recovery, her search for a sword crafted by legendary smith Hatori Hanzo (Sonny Chiba), and her encounters with Oren Ishii (Lucy Liu) a.k.a. Cottonmouth and Vernita Green (Vivica A. Fox) a.k.a. Copperhead).
To use a cliche phrase I use more often than I’d like, this film really hits the ground running... it is jarring from the start, and it never truly lets up to breathe, only to readjust.  Quentin Tarantino was clearly running on high cylinders in terms of style and inspiration during the production of this movie, as it has some of the most focused and intense energy found in any of his films.  Ultimately, what we’re given is a high-voltage mix of revenge thriller and ‘lone-wolf, lone-cub’ setup story.  The highest respect and regard to history is shown to the martial arts film genre, including a beautiful nod to Bruce Lee’s iconic outfit from Game of Death during the go-home section of Vol. 1.
Again, there is an infectious energy found in all aspects of this movie, from the diversity of cast down to visual and sound design.  On top of this, there is an amazing plethora of locations and sets, which expands the world of the film, and by proxy, the lore, as the entire presentation comes off as larger than life.  Despite the non-linear presentation, the raising of stakes plays in a very linear nature (minus the initial shooting prior to the opening credits).  The sequence leading up to and including the Crazy 88 is easily some of my favorite filmmaking I’ve ever witnessed.
Amazing choreography and use of environment is found in every combat scene, thanks to the work of legend Yuen Woo Ping and his team.  Like and Tarantino film, there is plenty of humor to be found, even in the most tense moments.  A completely mind-blowing animated sequence emerges from thin air, but helpfully desensitizes the presentation of otherwise problematic subject matter in the form of gratuitous violence and pedophilia found in the backstory of Oren Ishii.  Like the many locations, there is an impressive variety and implementation of weapons to also be found and enjoyed.  Tarantino manages multiple musical reappropriations of material connected to other properties that perfectly help set tone or pace scenes.  Several breathtaking camera moves and cuts are present, many of which are overshadowed by the pure spectacle of the film as a whole.
Uma Thurman’s commitment to both the glorious and the less than flattering aspects of the role completely sells the film, making it impossible to not find a connection to her character or the motivation for her journey.  Vivica A. Fox helps thrust the movie forward with matching motherly energy, proving herself to be dangerous while validating Thurman’s character’s abilities.  Lucy Liu embraces her boss role, carrying a dignity and quiet ferocity she’s always let boil under the surface in past roles.  Gordon Liu shines as the boss prior to the final boss, setting us up for a wonderful dual-role payoff in the following film.  Chiaki Kuriyama nearly steals the show as the sadistic and vicious Go-Go.  Sonny Chiba continues his string of roles as the wise and inspirational legend, continuing to help blur the line between the man and the myth, with plenty of wonderful support from Kenji Oba.  James and Michael Parks bring a natural connection to the screen that permeates, making their brief appearance one of the most memorable.  The restraint with which Tarantino uses David Carradine, Michael Madsen and Daryl Hannah in Vol. 1 sets them up perfectly for larger appearances in Vol. 2.  Julie Dreyfuss, Ambrosia Kelly and The 5.6.7.8′s also make special appearances.
As wonderful as Kill Bill Vol. 1 is, it is honestly only half of a film, if taken at face value.  I always found myself bothered when people would refer to this as ‘the better movie’, as this film is only the inciting incident, main character background and rising action of what would be a complete story.  It is for these exact reasons that I cherish both films, and I secretly wish for there to be a Criterion Collection Director’s Cut one day, where Quentin Tarantino restores his original vision and unites the films as one.

superlusters:
Domination Verse
Society practically crumbled when all sorts of people across the Earth suddenly felt a need to dominate, and found themselves with the power to fuck people’s brains out of them - either fucking their intelligence away, or their free will, or both.
It was especially bad that many of the world’s heroes, and villains, found themselves affected by this change.
Karen Starr, Powergirl, took over Metropolis, making the city bow before her as she fucked it into submission.
Wonder Woman disappeared to Themyscira, fucked all of her Amazonian sisters into being hers, and then started kidnapping people she wanted and bringing them home with her, and they were never seen again.
Peggy Carter went to London to start taking over England from there, with Angie Martinelli by her side (and, for some reason, they were unable to fuck eacfh other into submissiion, though they cboth fucked plenty of others into submission).
Raven instantly dominated the Teen Titans, then started taking over Jump City.
Olivia Queen became the head of Star City, though her will had been fucked out by Helena Kyle, but she’d managed to keep it a secret.
Toni Stark took over New York City.
Gotham City became a battleground, Batman, Batwoman, Poison Ivy, and others all refusing to be taken by each other, while trying to unite the city under themselves.
Others went into hiding, knowing that their fellow supers would want to claim them if they ran into each other, and not wanting to be owned by them, waiting for a time to strike (though many never got that chance, being taken too quickly).
Power was a very fickle thing when it just took one good fuck to destroy your mind, and take away all your power, though.
Starters (from @superlusters
Nightstalker, the son of Batman and Wonder woman, Black Spider-man, Brother to peter parker, and The son of Wolverine Mark Howlett. Are one of the few heroes who have gone into hiding, James got his brother Peter to come with him even if it was somewhat against his will. Nightstalker try saving Dick, Damien, Jason Todd, and Drake but was not able to for they are the ones who made sure he could escape and this is been eating away at him, feeling like he was a coward when he should have stay and fought. Mark just remembers what happen in new york and how the x-men were also affected by whatever is going on but will help fix this one way or another.
“This is bullshit, what caused this sudden fuck fest all over the global???” Mark asked the two while they keep an eye on other heroes that are there hiding, who knows if they are actually hiding or secret helpers to those ruling up above the ground.
James sighs as he just looks down at Peter hoping he not mad as he answers Mark, “I don’t know, it could be something in the air, could be Thanos or some god of sexualality....Hell could be Toni’s fault for messing or tinkering with something and it blew up.” he stated.
Jason Wayne stares out into the darkness of the place they are hiding at with others, “I wouldn’t be surprise fif Posion Ivy some how did this, but then agian she tries to kil not make sexual suggestions. There too many variables, we need to try and limit them to pinpoint when this happen and why.” he informed them as he grabs his mask putting it back on. “So we need to spilt up and go searching.”
Mark looks at his outfit that Logan, his ‘father’ gave him as he puts it on, “Understood, but we have to be very careful and not get caught otherwise we will be lost...”
James sighs as his clothing begins to move and cover his body as his Symboite covers his entire body puttin g his costume on. “Alright, lets do this before my brother gets wind of what we are going to try and do... I’ll check out Toni’s tower.”
Mark thinks about where he should go as he thinks of going to star city, “I’ll deal with Star City.” Jason sighs as he tells them, “I’ll head to Titan’s tower, see if Raven knows anything, maybe its magic and demon related.”
With that each one left the hide out and headed towards their repsectful city.

Where is the bridge? - London (1)
It was 10 a.m., the ray of sunlight was shining through the window and was bringing light into the room. Our host told us how lucky we are „days like this are very rarely in London“. After we telling him our plan for the day, he gave us some advice about how the rental bike thing is working here.
We made a little detour to the Tower Bridge. Now that we were here, of course we had to cross it. To stand at one of the world famous sights was pretty stunning. While we were crossing the bridge we took pictures of every angle. Very touristy, I know.
Finally we got to the bike station. Our plan was to go with bicycles along the Thames river to Greenwich, where we wanna check out the market. The most of the route we didn’t drove along the river, which didn't matter. The way was still beautiful. We were one block before, on a little busy street. The stone pavement wasn’t really comfortable to ride the bikes on it. Luckily this pave wasn’t continuous. The way led along this beautiful brick wall houses. It looked like a nice old harbor area. We crossed a park, drove a part on the sidewalk of busy street and turned into the path which where laying directly at the Thames. The sun was shining into my face, I felt the little brise on my skin, a smile appeared: this day couldn’t be better. I knew my sister, on the bike behind me, felt the same.
We reached the station where we dropped of the bikes. Right next to it was a school. They had break and all the students where outside at the court. I never saw so many students, they where incredible loud. We just wanted to get away from there, we walked quickly to the river to cross the bridge. But there was no Bridge. Do we have to search for a bridge? We walked across the park, where we where and reached a round small building. The bridge was actually a tunnel! Excited to cross it we took the stairs.
From the Greenwich Market we where disappointed there where a few nice shops, but the actually Market was more flea market, with a lot of useless stuff. While we had lunch, of course street food - English and Etiopean, we decided to go back to the city by boat (but only if it is the speed boat).
It was one. I found myself standing outside at the back of the boat, holding on at the railing, enjoyed the speed, the sunshine and a second time of this day I was incredibly overwhelmed. Overwhelmed of this beautiful day and of this beautiful exploring tour. The highlight was when we went under the Tower Bridge. Until the London Eye, where we got off, they didn’t speed up, probably because there was more traffic.
James Park When my sister told me she want that squirrels eat nuts from her hand I didn’t believed that it would be possible. But here I did it myself. Actually the squirrels just run to us as the heard the bag with nuts rustle. They where a little afraid though and didn’t got too close. My sister put a nut between here fingers and feed them. After a while she put it at her palm of the hand. We continue walking in the park and stop time by time, to feet the animals. There where many of them. I also did it, actually I was a bit afraid. It was fine. The squirrel was also afraid and took the nut quick from my hand. I didn’t felt claws, it felt more soft they feet of animal. It would have been lovely to cuddle them.
We heard trational music. We went to check whats happening. It look like a changing the guard kind a thing, it just wasn’t in front of the Buckingham Palace. Google says it’s the Guard Museum, but I'm still not sure yet. We stood there a while - nothing else than music playing happened but then they moved. It wasn’t that exciting. Still after this eventful day, was our "accidentally run into" a-changing-the-guard-ceremony pretty terrific.

Yesterday I finally got to try the Gangnambbq on Longmore in Korea Mart Mesa. M-F it is $14.99 all you can eat. It's the first all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ in Mesa. The food is delicious and freshly cut. I talked to the manager and chefs and they gave myself and James Park, my foodie partner & cohost, a tour and run down. The place is packed lunch to dinner. It's very worth it. The whole complex is coming together nicely under the management of owner Mr. Lee and is an excellent addition to the Fiesta District Mesa. Thanks to Warren Chu of AZCulture.com, and Tania and Ericka for joining us. #iheartmesa #jamespark #koreamartmesa #fiestadistrictmesa (at Gangnambbq)
