Cheryl Adrienne Browne Hollingsworth (born 1950) Miss Iowa 1970, is a former ballet dancer who was the first African American contestant in the history of the Miss America pageant (Miss America 1971) following the abolition of the pageant’s rule #7, instituted during the 1930s, which read: “contestants must be of good health and the white race”.
In 2000, she lived in Lithonia, Georgia with her husband Karl. Both work in the financial industry and have two children.
Her father, Carl, worked as a narcotics policeman for Kennedy Airport’s Port Authority. Her mother Mercedes, managed a tuberculosis clinic at Triboro Hospital. She grew up in Jamaica, Queens with her three brothers.” She studied dance for 16 years before the Miss America pageant.
She left New York to attend Luther College. She entered and won the local 1970 Miss Decorah Pageant which enabled her to compete in the Miss Iowa pageant held on June 13, 1970. She placed first in the swimsuit competition and performed an original ballet performance for the talent competition to the music of ‘Scheherazade.’ She beat the other 19 contestants to win the title of Miss Iowa 1970. This win generated a strong response from newspapers, the Miss Iowa pageant board, and herself. The criticisms ranged from her ethnic background to the fact that a non-native Iowan won the crown.
This backlash followed her to the Miss America 1971 pageant held on September 12, 1970. She drew the attention of reporters and security personnel in Atlantic City who maintained a visible presence during pageant rehearsals. The Women’s Liberation Front demonstrated at the event. She was not a finalist, losing to Miss Texas 1970, Phyllis George. In August 1971, she traveled to Vietnam with George, Miss Nevada 1970, Vicky Jo Todd, Miss New Jersey 1970, Hela Yungst, Miss Arizona 1970, Karen Shields, Miss Arkansas 1970, Donna Connelly, and Miss Texas 1970, and Belinda Myrick. They participated in a 22-day United Service Organizations tour for American troops that began in Saigon. She commented that she thought “it was one of the last Miss America groups to go to Vietnam.” #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

11 Things You Should Always Discuss With Your Gynaecologist
They say, Never hide from a doctor and lawyer. If you do so you might have to face serious repercussions in future. This is indeed true. Many people hesitate or feel embarrassed in discussing about their health issues with their doctor, not realizing that if they provide hidden or incomplete information then the doctor will not be able to diagnose the problem which will straightaway affect the treatment. Such type of risk should not be taken with health matters. Also if symptoms and conditions are detected early, they can be prevented or treated before they become worse. Many women are self-conscious about their vaginal health, but there's nothing you can say or show your gynaecologist that they haven't seen before.
Here are some of the topics you should always bring up with your gynecologist doctor, as it will help them better analyze the treatment option that will benefit you the best. Things that are happening may seem usual to you but please let your gynaecologist decide whether its normal or not.
What should I talk to the gynaecologist near me
Tumblr media
About your family history
You should tell your gynecologist about any conditions in your family's medical history, such as high blood pressure, thyroid issues, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and more. This will enable your healthcare professional to develop an appropriate treatment plan for you.
About your menstrual cycle
If you've seen any changes in your menstrual cycle, or having pain, irregularity or heavy flow, make sure to tell your gynecologist doctor, including:
Unusual pacing
Clotting\Spotting
Periods that are irregular or uncomfortable
Cramping or any other changes that you're worried about
These changes can be normal, but they can also indicate additional issues including pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids. Your gynecologist will assist you in determining if these changes are normal or pathological, as well as providing the necessary treatment.
About your sex life
It's awkward to discuss your sexual history with your gynecologist, but they need to know about any previous illnesses or sexually transmitted infections you've experienced. Your gynecologist can help you figure out why you're having discomfort during intercourse and address any questions you have about other sexual issues.
If you have discomfort or bleeding during intercourse, you should see your gynecologist since it could be caused by infections, dryness, or other underlying medical issues.
About your contraceptives
If you are currently using birth control pills or another form of contraception, you should tell your gynecologist. Please notify your gynecologist if you are suffering any side effects, symptoms or allergies.
Pregnant or trying to conceive
If you're pregnant or attempting to conceive, let your gynecologist know. They can help with pregnancy tests, early indicators of infertility and pregnancy, and ovulation kits, among other things. They can also perform genetic carrier screening prior to conception.
Your sexual desires
While having a low libido is typical, it's important to talk to your gynecologist about it to figure out what's causing it. Low libido might be caused by certain drugs or stress, or it can be a sign of another underlying medical problem. In such cases, your gynecologist will determine the source of the problem and propose a treatment plan to boost your libido. Also be transparent if you experience any painful sex, sexual discomfort or unable to have orgasm.
Discuss about your vagina
While it's typical for the vaginal area to have its own characteristic odor, a foul or fishy odor should never be overlooked. As a result, it's a good idea to talk to your gynecologist about it to make sure it's not due to a bacterial or yeast infection.
It might be frightening to have an abnormal growth in or near your vaginal area. Make sure it's not an ingrown hair, a shaved cut, or a zit before jumping to conclusions. While benign growths are most of the time, they can also be indicators of herpes, so you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Many women have problems with their vagina not being properly lubricated during sexual intercourse, which can make their vagina itchy and cause chafing. Vaginal dryness can be caused by a variety of circumstances, including a woman's age and other underlying causes.
Itching in the vaginal area can be quite irritating; however, it is not always the case, and itching can be a sign of other underlying difficulties such as vaginal irritation, vaginal infections, sexually transmitted illnesses, and so on. It could also be due to vulvar cancer in the worst-case situation. A gynecologist must be consulted in order to receive an accurate diagnosis. Vaginal itching should not be taken lightly by women, as it could indicate a serious problem. It is therefore vital to avoid feeling uncomfortable or bashful while talking with a doctor and to tell them everything without hesitation.
Pain while having sex
There are numerous reasons why a woman may have a painful sexual encounter.
If there is a change in sexual activity, this is a red flag.
- If they are infected with a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).
– as a result of discomfort and damage in or around the vaginal canal
- as a result of vaginal infections
- as a result of urinary tract infections
- as a result of vaginal dryness after or during menopause
- This ailment causes a woman to endure considerable discomfort during sexual intercourse due to a condition known as Vulvodynia, which causes inflammation and pain in and around the vagina.
Consult Obstetrics and Gynaecology Care Centre in Jamaica
Incontinence of the bladder
Urinary incontinence is more common in post-menopausal women. They are unable to contain leaks due to the decrease of suppleness in their vaginal tissues. This illness can also affect women who have recently given birth, particularly if the infant is large. Urinary incontinence can be well treated with the numerous treatment options available today, therefore it should not be overlooked.
Sore breasts
Sore breasts are most common in women during or just before their periods. However, if it occurs frequently, talk to your gynecologist about it.
Lifestyle
Knowing your lifestyle is beneficial to your doctor. This covers details such as your workout routines and whether or not you smoke, drink, or use drugs. Remember, your doctor should be aware of these factors (both positive and negative) so that he or she can give you with the finest health care possible.
Topics can be intimidating but it is imperative that your gynaecologist knows every detail if you have more than one sexual partner, if you’ve had unprotected sex, if you bleed after sex, your supplements or medications if any, if you have any sleep issues, if you have been sexually abused
The majority of women perceive their gynecologists' appointments to be a chore, and they are relieved when they are finished. Reproductive health should never be taken for granted, and all women, regardless of whether or not they are experiencing problems with their reproductive system, should schedule frequent visits with their gynecologists. Women should also consider getting a pap smear at least once a year in addition to these normal checkups. Regular visits to your gynecologist can help you stay in touch with your reproductive health while also assisting you in finding answers to all of your questions about whether or not the problems you're experiencing are normal. This will be really beneficial in the long run.

Dr Soares-Wynter, Director at the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) and also Clinical Nutritionist at the Caribbean Institute for Health Research at The University of the West Indies, pointed out that one in two Jamaicans, 15 years or older, were overweight/obese, including two-thirds of Jamaican women, before the pandemic. The situation has worsened over the last two years. She cited findings of a recent study conducted by the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), which showed that 80% of Jamaicans, over the pandemic, reportedly gained weight, and 63% have changed their eating habits, not necessarily for the better. New studies also confirmed that obesity could lead to heart muscle injury and heart failure, even in the absence of known markers for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and elevated cholesterol. Dr Soares-Wynter noted that Jamaicans have had to undergo changes in their lifestyles for the last two years. “We are not as active, we can’t get out as much, and many of us have had to change our eating patterns. Our access to fruits and vegetables and maybe healthier foods has been impacted because of changes in our movement, loss of jobs, and then there is also the stress impact,” she said. She made the remarks while speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ on February 11. (at Kingston, Jamaica) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaDAf68M9OG/?utm_medium=tumblr

10 Things to Look for When Searching for a Gynecologist
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. True for doctors in different fields. But a gynaecologist is one doctor that every woman wants to visit atleast once in her lifetime. For a good reason of course. One of your first steps as you prepare for this exciting and pivotal time in your life, pregnancy, you should be choosing the correct gynecologist in Jamaica. You must feel completely at ease with a gynaecologist, since he or she will accompany you throughout your exciting nine-month adventure, culminating in the birth of your bundle of joy.
What do they check for at the gynaecologist
Other than pregnancy or childbirth, if you're having problems with your reproductive system, such as heavy bleeding, severe cramping, or other troubling symptoms, you should see a gynecologist. Even if you're in ideal health, you should get frequent checks to make sure your reproductive organs are in good shape and stay that way.
How do I choose a good gynaecologist
Well there are two fields interwoven with this. A gynecologist is a doctor who focuses on the reproductive health of women. Obstetricians provide treatment to women during pregnancy and shortly after the birth of their child. They also give birth to children. All of these are things that an ob-gyn is trained to do. It would be ideal to visit obstetrics and gynaecology care centre Jamaica.
What should I know before going to the gynaecologist
Your ob-gyn will take care of some of your most essential health concerns, such as birth control, childbirth, and menopause. An ob-gyn can also conduct surgery for pelvic organ or urinary tract disorders, as well as screen for cancer and cure infections.
Because ob-gyns deal with such personal and delicate health matters, some women may be apprehensive about seeing one for the first time. You may be apprehensive or ashamed about allowing a doctor to examine the most intimate portions of your body. You might be hesitant to communicate your most personal concerns with an ob-gyn. In this article we will be discussing about few tips to help you choose your best gynecologist in Mandeville Jamaica.
How to find a good Gynecologist near me
Location
Considering the aspect of location is more a point of necessity than comfort. You will have to make  a monthly visit or two to your gynaecologist, so its wise to choose one which has offices at various locations in town. Obstetrics and gynaecology care centre Jamaica has offices at Spalding, Mandeville and Santa Cruz. Also consider:
Does her clinic/hospital have facilities for conducting various tests and investigations?
Does it have a pharmacy nearby?
Trust is imperative
You'll want to select someone with experience who you can trust because you'll be discussing your most private and sensitive health issues with this doctor. You wouldn't put your most private portions of your body in the hands of just anyone. That's why you should choose your ob-gyn with care.
Don't just pick a doctor's name at random from your health insurance provider list. Obtain a recommendation from a friend or family member. Find out about essential variables including the doctor's skills, experience, and bedside manner when you ask for recommendations.
Gynaecologist reviews
Read internet reviews to find out what other people have to say about your possible OB-GYN. Patient satisfaction surveys can reveal a lot about what to expect in terms of scheduling, availability, office environment, doctor approachability, and bedside manner, among other things.
A collection of patient comments and starred ratings is also available. A few negative reviews among many positive ones are probably unimportant, but hundreds of unfavorable reviews should be a major red flag.
Experience counts
Check out the credentials of the gynecologist in Jamaica while you're browsing online. You should be able to find the doctor's bio on the same websites that offer reviews, as well as on their practice's website. You should be able to see where the doctor went to medical school, how many years they've practiced, which hospital(s) they're affiliated with, and what their specialties are.
Personality:
During some of your most vulnerable moments, your gynecologist will be by your side. His or her bedside manners are really important. Is the doctor a nice guy? Is he or she upbeat and responsive? Is he/she approachable and friendly? Is he/she a good fit for you?
Every consultation takes time.
This is an essential factor since you don't want a doctor who rushes from one patient to the next without pausing. Always go for the person who is relaxed and patiently answers all of your questions.
Regardless of how busy she is, she should answer all of your questions and perform all of the necessary examinations.
Does the gynaecologist accept your insurance
When it comes to choosing a doctor, price is a major factor. If your gynecologist isn't in your network, you'll have to pay for your care out of cash, which can rapidly add up. To begin your search, check with your health plan to discover which gynecologists in your area are part of their network.
A comfortable communication
You want a doctor who will listen to you and take your concerns seriously. The best doctors don't give orders or preach to their patients; instead, they communicate with them in a two-way manner. This is the doctor who will perform your gynecologic exam and quiz you about your reproductive health in great detail. For the relationship to work, you must be entirely at ease with this individual.
Your gynecologist should be able to talk with you in simple terms. She should be able to answer all of your questions in layman's terms rather than medical jargon. She should be pleasant, kind, and attentive to your issues.
She should also keep you informed about how your pregnancy is progressing, any difficulties, and any further precautions or preparations you may require. Going to a doctor who does not communicate well with her patients is pointless.
What kind of additional access do you think you'll require?
During the week, most OB-GYN practices have conventional business hours. Is that sufficient for you, or do you require additional flexibility?
If seeing an OB-GYN during regular hours is difficult, investigate whether:
When the clinic is closed, you can reach out to an on-call doctor. When the clinic is closed, the doctor offers telemedicine services that allow you to have virtual appointments.
The doctor provides you with an online patient portal through which you can contact with them.
It saves them time and money on travel, increases communication with gynecologist in Jamaica , and aids in better health outcomes.
What are your thoughts on the practice as a whole?
Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are used by many practices to offer primary care. How well do you get along with the other doctors and nurses in the practice?
It's also important to see how the front and back office workers interact with you. They'll be the ones to contact most of the time, whether it's for arranging appointments, billing problems, or medication refills.
You might also wish to consider the practice's physical environment. Is the waiting room tidy and welcoming? Do the patient rooms appear to be well-organized and stocked? Is the equipment in good condition and appears to be reasonably new?
Where can I find a gynaecologist?
Though the clinic's appearance may appear to be trivial, it may be an indicator of how effectively the healthcare team will treat you. Finding the best gynecologist in Mandeville, Jamaica doesn't have to be stressful now that you have such a variety of information at your fingertips. And with these pointers in hand, choosing the right OB-GYN for you could be a lot easier than you think.

Its petals are used to make hibiscus tea, a beverage which has been consumed in many different regions for centuries, including West Africa, Persia, Mexico, Ghana, Cambodia and Egypt. It is recognised in many cultures as a medicinal plant, and is used to treat colds and improve skin health, amongst many other applications.
Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. The genus is quite large, comprising several hundred species that are native to warm-temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. Member species are renowned for their large, showy flowers and are commonly known simply as hibiscus. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, as well as woody shrubs and small trees. The generic name is derived from the Greek word which was the name Pedanius Dioscorides gave to Althaea officinalis.
Description
The leaves are alternate, ovate to lanceolate, often with a toothed or lobed margin. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, color from white to pink, red, orange, peach, yellow or purple, and from 4–18 cm broad. Flower color in certain species, such as H. mutabilis and H. tiliaceus, changes with age.The fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule, containing several seedsin each lobe, which are released when the capsule dehisces(splits open) at maturity. It is of red and white colours. It is an example of complete flowers.
Symbolism and culture
The hibiscus is the national flower of Haiti and is used in their national tourism slogan of Haïti: Experience It! The hibiscus species also represents several other nations, such as the Solomon Islands. The Hibiscus syriacus is the national flower of South Korea, and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the national flower of Malaysia. The red hibiscus is the flower of the Hindu goddess Kali, and appears frequently in depictions of her in the art of Bengal, India, often with the goddess and the flower merging in form. The hibiscus is used as an offering to goddess Kali and Lord Ganesha in Hindu worship.
In the Philippines, the gumamela (local name for hibiscus) is used by children as part of a bubble-making pastime. The flowers and leaves are crushed until the sticky juices come out. Hollow papaya stalks are then dipped into this and used as straws for blowing bubbles. Together with soap, hibiscus juices produce more bubbles.
The hibiscus flower is traditionally worn by Tahitian and Hawaiian girls. If the flower is worn behind the left ear, the woman is married or in a relationship. If the flower is worn on the right, she is single or openly available for a relationship.[citation needed] The hibiscus is Hawaii's state flower.
Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie named her first novel Purple Hibiscus after the delicate flower.
The bark of the hibiscus contains strong bast fibres that can be obtained by letting the stripped bark set in the sea to let the organic material rot away.
Precautions and contraindications Pregnancy and lactation
While the mechanism is not well understood, previous animal studies have demonstrated both an inhibitory effect of H. sabdariffa on muscle tone and the anti-fertility effects of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, respectively. The extract of H. sabdariffa has been shown to stimulate contraction of the rat bladder and uterus; the H.rosa-sinensis extract has exhibited contraceptive effects in the form of estrogen activity in rats. These findings have not been observed in humans. The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is also thought to have emmenagogue effects which can stimulate menstruation and, in some women, cause an abortion. Due to the documented adverse effects in animal studies and the reported pharmacological properties, the H. sabdariffa and H.rosa-sinensis are not recommended for use during pregnancy. Additionally, they are not recommended while breastfeeding due to the lack of reliable information on its safety and use.
Yellow Hibiscus Drug interactionsIt is postulated that H. sabdariffa interacts with diclofenac, chloroquine and acetaminophen by altering the pharmacokinetics. In healthy human volunteers, the H. sabdariffa extract was found to reduce the excretion of diclofenac upon co-administration. Additionally, co-administration of Karkade (H. sabdariffa), a common Sudanese beverage, was found to reduce chloroquine bioavailability. However, no statistically significant changes were observed in the pharmacokinetics of acetaminophen when administered with the Zobo (H.sabdariffa) drink.Further studies are needed to demonstrate clinical significance.
Magickal Uses of Hibiscus
Planetary Association: Venus
Gender: Feminine
Folklore: One species of Hibiscus, known as Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus), is extensively used in paper making. Another, roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is used as a vegetable and to make herbal teas and jams (especially in the Caribbean).
In Mexico, the drink is known as Jamaican water or agua de Jamaica and is quite popular for its colour, tanginess and mild flavour; once sugar is added, it tastes somewhat like cranberry juice. Dieters or persons with kidney problems often take it without adding sugar for its beneficial properties and as a natural diuretic. It is made by boiling the dehydrated flowers in water; once it is boiled, it is allowed to cool and drunk with ice.
In Egypt and Sudan, roselle petals are used to make a tea named after the plant karkade. The Hibiscus is used as an offering to Goddess Kali and Lord Ganesha in Hindu worship. The Gumamela or Hibiscus rosa sinensis linn flower has antifungal, emmenagogue, emollient and refrigerant effect.
Hibiscus, especially white hibiscus, is considered to have medicinal properties in the Indian traditional system of medicine, Ayurveda. Roots make various concoctions believed to cure various ailments.
The natives of southern India use the Red hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) for hair care purposes. The red flower and leaves, extracts of which can be applied on hair to tackle hair-fall and dandruff on the scalp. It is used to make hair-protective oils. A simple application involves soaking the leaves and flowers in water and using a wet grinder to make a thick paste, and used as a natural shampoo.
Dried hibiscus is edible, and is often a delicacy in Mexico.
The hibiscus flower is traditionally worn by Hawaiian women. A single flower is tucked behind the ear. Which ear is used indicates the wearer’s availability for marriage.
Magickal Uses: This lusty flower incites passion — use it to attract love or lust, or for prophetic dreams . Attracting love and lust, divination, and dreams. Carry in a sachet or burn as incense to attract love. These flowers have been used throughout centuries as an aphrodisiac. Egyptian women are banned from drinking tea made with this herb because it is said to induce lusty feelings. Use this herb for spells dealing with love or lust, or put the petals into a sachet to bring on passion and love.
Hibiscus is also used in incense mixtures for divination and clairvoyance. Hibiscus flowers aid divination when placed in a wooden bowl containing water, and the result is scryed. The blossoms are used in love incenses and sachets and in the tropics; the blossoms are placed in wreaths in marriage ceremonies.
The Dobu of the Western Pacific place the blossoms in wooden scrying bowls. It is also used as a Protection against Negativity and Evil. It facilitates Psychic Abilities, and attracts good Spirits.

Forensic Psychology- Intimate Partner Violence- February 14,2021
What is Intimate Partner Violence?
Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects millions of People as a serious, preventable public health epidemic. Physical abuse, sexual violence, harassment, or psychological damage by a current or former partner or spouse is defined by the word 'intimate partner violence.' Among heterosexual or same-sex couples, this form of violence can occur and does not involve sexual intimacy.

Forms of IPV
Physical violence is when, by punching, kicking, or using some kind of physical force, a person hurts or attempts to hurt a partner.
Sexual violence involves or threatens to compel a partner to engage in a sexual act, sexual contact or a non-physical sexual occurrence (e.g., sexting) if the partner does not consent or is unable to do so.
Stalking is a pattern of a partner's frequent, unwelcome attention and contact that creates fear or concern for one's own safety or someone close to the victim's safety.
Psychological aggression is the use of verbal and non-verbal communication with the intention of psychologically or emotionally harming another person and/or exerting influence over another person.(Center for Disease Control and Prevention ,n.d.)
Statistics
Women's Health Survey 2016 Jamaica
A survey was conducted by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica under the technical and financial support of the UN Women and the Inter-American Development Bank through the Phase III of the Government of Jamaica’s Citizen Security and Justice Programme. The survey findings examine women’s most recent and lifetime experiences with intimate partner violence and abuse, as well as abuse and violence in a non-intimate context.
The study revealed important patterns, such as a higher incidence of physical and sexual abuse experienced by women in urban areas than in rural areas (6.2% vs. 5.4%); and women who were 18 years of age or younger when they entered their first marriage (living together or married to a man) were twice as likely to encounter extreme violence as women who were older when they entered resistance. (CDC, n.d.)
IPV Effects on children- Short term

Children can feel afraid and anxious in families where one parent is abused. They will still be on alert, wondering when the next violent incident will occur. 3 Depending on their age, this may cause them to react in various ways:
Preschool children. Young kids who encounter intimate partner abuse may tend to do things they used to do when they were younger, such as bed-wetting, thumb-sucking, weeping and moaning more frequently. They may also have trouble falling or staying asleep; display signs of fear, such as stuttering or hiding; and display signs of extreme anxiety about separation.
School-aged children. Children can feel bad about the violence and blame themselves for it in this age group. Domestic violence and neglect hurts the self-esteem of children. They may not participate or get good grades in school events, have less friends than others, and more frequently get into trouble. They can even have a lot of stomach aches and headaches.
Teenagers. Teenagers who witness violence can behave in adverse ways, such as arguing with family members or missing school. They can also engage in risky activities, such as consuming alcohol or narcotics and having unsafe sex. They may have low self-esteem and find it difficult to make friends. They can start wars or threaten others and are more likely to get in trouble with the law. In teenage boys who are exploited in infancy, this form of behaviour is more common than in teenage girls. Girls are more likely to be withdrawn and to suffer depression than boys.
IPV Effect on Children- Long Term
In the United States, more than 15 million children live in households in which domestic violence has occurred at least once.5 By entering into abusive marriages or becoming abusers themselves, these children are at increased risk of continuing the cycle as adults. A boy who sees his mother being raped, for example, is 10 times more likely as an adult to assault his female spouse. A girl brought up in a household where her father beats her mother is more than six times as likely as a girl growing up in a non-abusive home to be sexually abused.
As adults, children who encounter or are victims of mental, physical, or sexual violence are at increased risk for health problems. Mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, may include these. Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, low self-esteem, and other conditions can also be one of them.

How to help children who are witnesses to heal- Advice to Parents suffering from IPV
Helping     them feel safe. It is     important to feel protected for children who observe or experience     domestic abuse. Consider if leaving the child's abusive relationship will     make them feel better. Speak to your child about the value of     relationships that are safe.
Talking     about their worries . Let them     know it's not their fault or your fault, either. Learn more about     listening to your child and talking to him about domestic abuse
Talking     about healthy ties with them. Help     them benefit from the experience of violence by talking about what is and     isn't a healthy relationships. When they start intimate relationships     of their own, this will help them know what is safe.
Talking     about boundaries with them. Let     your child know that no one, including family members, professors,     coaches, or other sources of authority, has the right to harass them or     make them feel uncomfortable. Also, explain to your child that he or she     does not have the right to access the body of another human, and they     should do so immediately if anyone tells them to stop.
Helping     to find a strong support system for them. This could be a school counsellor, a therapist, or another trusted     adult, in addition to a parent, who can offer consistent help. Understand     that school counsellors, if they suspect it, are allowed to report     domestic violence or harassment.
·        Giving them professional assistance. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy or therapy that may work better with children that have witnessed aggression or abuse. CBT is particularly effective with children who have trauma-related anxiety or other mental health issues. A therapist can work with the child during CBT to turn negative thoughts into more positive ones. The therapist will also help your child learn to deal with stress in safe ways.

Dr Germaine Spencer, an obstetrician, gynaecologist and surgeon, is not satisfied with being just a medical practitioner, when there is money to be made from quality health facilities.
The medico with a taste for business specialises in female oncology, that is, cancer prevention, treatment and care for women; minimally invasive abdominal or laparoscopic surgery; and vaginoplasty or cosmetic vaginal surgery. He identifies the latter as a booming area of a generally profitable health business.
Spencer, 38, has outfitted and operates three private health centres in Montego Bay and is now investing in excess of US$2 million, or over $260 million in local currency, in a new private hospital set to open in the western city by next January. For the past year, he has also invested in a restaurant and sports bar in the western city.
Baywest Hospital takes up space formerly occupied by MoBay Hope at Half Moon Shopping Village in Rose Hall. Hospiten Group, the Spanish owners of MoBay Hope, rebranded the facility and relocated just across the road where it now operates as Hospiten Montego Bay. That 27-bed hospital, reported to have been built at a cost of $2.3 billion, was opened in October 2015.
Spencer is taking a slightly different market focus than rival Hospiten and is banking on the encouragement of corporate clients, including major hotels, large business process outsourcing firms, cruise lines and international insurance providers to drive business his way.
"The market is there for the taking," he told the Financial Gleaner.
The 10-bed Baywest Hospital will be equipped with an operating theatre, a maternity suite, clinics and a full range of imaging services, and will be serviced by a staff of nearly 30, including 20 doctors. The hospital joins three other Baywest health facilities all located in Montego Bay - at Baywest Shopping Centre; on Barnett Street; and a 24-hour operation at the Fairview commercial centre in the expanding Bogue suburbs.
These businesses grew out of one office in Baywest Centre, started in 2011, which itself has undergone major expansion and now occupies some three rented shops, one utilised as an operating theatre. Baywest Medical partners with ambulances service providers Life Call and EMed air ambulance.
The tenacious entrepreneur also operates E-Shore Medical, which provides medical services on location in the Montego Bay Free Zone for call centre workers.
Last year, spurred by the perceived need among young professionals for a safe space to relax downtown, Spencer decided to enter the food service business. He opened 876 Legends restaurant and sports bar at the fast-developing Fairview Town Centre on the Montego Bay outskirts.
The 876 investment, to date, is in excess of $30 million. Spencer said he is still learning the restaurant business and is yet to determine whether to maintain a long-term footprint in that industry.
The entrepreneur says his business expansion is being financed largely by bank loans with savings, reinvestment of earnings and support from one family member who assisted in purchasing some equipment in the early stages. He and wife, Kerene, who oversees the finances full-time, were coy about disclosing the total investments to date, which they admit is sizable.
All the businesses combined employ close to 50 people.
Self-sufficient centre
In his core area of competence, medicine, Spencer's central business idea is to create a "wide network of full-service, urgent-care medical facilities throughout western Jamaica", with these centres also providing referrals to the Baywest Hospital.
These centres are intended to be self-sufficient, providing services including general practitioner, physician, obstetrician/gynaecologist, internist, surgeon, dentist, laboratory, ultrasound, X-ray and other imaging services. His network of urgent-care health facilities is also expected to be supported by a services locator mobile app with the capacity to deliver medical advice from trained paramedics, security and roadside assistance. The GPS-enabled app has been in development for a few years but is expected to be launched soon, pending the expected signing of a major health insurance provider.
Spencer plans to grow his holdings nationally, eventually, but first wants to perfect his business model before stepping beyond western Jamaica.
For now, the evolution of his business is driven by "gut feeling" and his knowledge of the health-care environment.
Spencer says he is not worried about the competition from the various medical centres and doctors' offices dotting the landscape in Montego Bay. He cites the full-service nature of the Baywest medical centres, a down-to-earth service culture, and "less-than-market benchmark" fees as competitive advantages. The three locations together are said to see up to 180 patients on a good day.
As he puts it, the state of public health facilities and services, handicapped by the lack of resources stemming from the Government's no-user-fee policy, is providing a lucrative, growing market for medical entrepreneurship.
"There is 'x' number of patients any human being can see per day without getting flustered. The clinics are backed up. The surgery list is backing up," said Spencer. The 'no-user -fee' policy "created a lull for us initially, but business went back to what it was before," he said.
Spencer's first foray into business was in 2010 on his return to Jamaica from Trinidad and India, where he pursued advanced studies following his degree studies in medicine and surgery at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
Building from failure
He tasted failure when his initial medical centre business partnership established at Fairview in Montego Bay went sour after a year, while he worked full-time in the government health service for three years. But he decided to treat it as a positive development, an opportunity to do better on his next venture.
He has a protracted court battle that ended a year ago to thank for the recovery of some of his initial investment, which saved him from total loss on the venture.
The Jamaica College graduate credits his uncle, Dr Howard Spencer, a retired cardiothoracic surgeon, professor emeritus of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of the West Indies and registrar of the Medical Council of Jamaica and the Caribbean Association of Medical Councils, for having encouraged him into medicine and guiding him professionally.
But credit for his entrepreneurial side, he said, goes to his mother Yvette Griffiths.
Both his mother and father, Goldstone Spencer, have been involved in garment manufacturing.
"My mother is a strong woman," he said, recalling the challenging times when her business was seriously and adversely affected in the financial sector meltdown and Finsac bailouts of the 1990s and she struggled to keep the venture afloat, pay staff and put food on the family table.
Spencer notes that he tries to match his mother's tenacity in his own business pursuits.
"I love business. Medicine is my route to business," he said.

New Post has been published on https://ocgreenrelief.org/cbd/cannabinoids-pre-neo-post-natal
Cannabinoids; Pre- Neo- and Post-natal
What do breast milk, tea and Cannabis have in common? Quite a bit, it turns out. In addition to providing a soothing sense of comfort and bliss, they also facilitate in stimulating and nourishing the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). For a variety of legal and moral reasons, adults generally do not indulge in a glass of breast milk when they need comfort. Instead, many enjoy a cup of tea. Black, white and green tea all come from the same species of plant, Camellia sinensis. They contain an anti-oxidant known as catechin which responds to cannabinoid receptors (CB1) in the same way cannabinoids do, providing anti-inflammatory and neuro-protective health benefits. When the cannabinoid known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is released into the body and interacts with the CB1 receptors, it causes a temporary increase in dopamine. As a result, the user experiences a sense of relaxation and pleasure.
proxy.jpeg Cannabinoids, like those found in Cannabis, occur naturally in human breast milk
Breast milk has been revered for generations as the most wholesome and beneficial source of nutrition that a mother can provide her growing infant. The human body has an intricate system of proteins known as cannabinoid receptors, specifically designed to process cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), two of the primary active components of Cannabis sativa L., (Cannabis). And it turns out, based on the findings of several major scientific studies, human breast milk naturally contains many of the same cannabinoids found in Cannabis, which are actually extremely vital for proper human development. Since cannabinoids exist in breast milk, clearly, humans are designed to utilise them.
Cell membranes in the body are naturally equipped with cannabinoid receptors. The two receptor types found in the body, CB1 (in the brain) and CB2 (immune system and the rest of the body), respond to cannabinoids, whether from human breast milk for newborns, or from juiced Cannabis, for instance, in adults. When activated by cannabinoids and various other nutritive substances, they play a critical role in protecting cells against viruses, harmful bacteria, cancer and other malignancies, boosting immune function, protecting the brain and nervous system and relieving pain and disease-causing inflammation, among other things. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemical compounds that promote homoeostasis by interacting with specific receptors found in the human body which essentially means the human body was built for cannabinoids and an intricate system of cannabinoids, receptors and other binding substances manufactured in the brain make up the ECS (Endocannabinoid System).
Breast milk is an abundant source of endocannabinoids, a specific type of neuromodulatory lipid that teaches a newborn how to eat by stimulating the suckling process which is essential for an infant’s development. According to a 2004 study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology, cannabinoids found in breast milk activate the CB1 receptor which in turn activates the oral-motor musculature, imperative for suckling. It is also believed cannabinoids promote an infant’s desire to eat, much like an adult cannabis user getting the munchies. If it were not for the cannabinoids in breast milk, newborns would not know how to eat, nor would they necessarily have the desire to eat, which could result in severe malnourishment and even death. Newborns who are breastfed naturally receive doses of cannabinoids that trigger hunger and promote growth and development. “Endocannabinoids have been detected in maternal milk and activation of CB1 (cannabinoid receptor type 1) receptors appears to be critical for milk sucking … apparently activating oral-motor musculature”, says the abstract. “The medical implications of these novel developments are far reaching and suggest a promising future for cannabinoids in paediatric medicine for conditions including ‘non-organic failure-to-thrive’ and cystic fibrosis”. Even given the above information, the more conservative ‘public’ are still concerned about how Cannabis use will affect children. Given the masses of misinformation still being fed to many communities by ignorant and (if not actually then morally) corrupt public health and government officials in various jurisdictions around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, across the Asia-Pacific region and Australia this is unsurprising. Many parents who consume Cannabis, including new mothers, do have unaddressed (due to a lack of education on Cannabis or illegality or just plain ignorance) concerns about the effects of their Cannabis use and whether or not they should breastfeed their babies. The American Academy of Paediatrics suggests pregnant women or nursing mothers should not use Cannabis, however, their concerns appear to be totally unfounded.
“Cannabis exposure during the prenatal period … at the very least we can say there is no harm”. This quote is from Dr Melanie Dreher, co-author of what has become more commonly known as ‘The Jamaica Study’, Prenatal Marijuana Exposure and Neonatal Outcomes in Jamaica: An Ethnographic Study. Dr Dreher’s study set out with the objective of identifying neuro-behavioural effects of prenatal Cannabis exposure on neonates in rural Jamaica. The study was, by design, based on ethnographic field studies and standardised neuro-behaviour assessments during the neonatal period in the setting of rural Jamaica, traditionally a ‘heavy-Cannabis-using’ population. The participants were twenty-four Jamaican neonates exposed to Cannabis prenatally and 20 non-exposed neonates. Exposed and non-exposed neonates were compared at 3 days and 1 month old, using the Brazelton Neonatal Assessment Scale, including supplementary items to capture possible subtle effects. There were no significant differences between exposed and non-exposed neonates on day 3. At 1 month, the exposed neonates showed better physiological stability and required less examiner facilitation to reach organised states. The neonates of heavy-Cannabis-using mothers had better scores on autonomic stability, quality of alertness, irritability, and self-regulation and were judged to be more rewarding for caregivers. Dr Dreher and her fellow researchers concluded that the absence of any differences between the exposed or non-exposed groups in the early neonatal period suggest that the better scores of exposed neonates at 1 month are traceable to the cultural positioning and social and economic characteristics of mothers using Cannabis that select for the use of Cannabis but also promote neonatal development. As a nurse and anthropologist, Dr Melanie Dreher has enjoyed a distinguished research career and was principal investigator for several cross-cultural studies examining Cannabis in the context of Caribbean society. As a doctoral student in anthropology at Columbia University, she conducted the first ethnographic study of ‘ganja’ (Cannabis) in Jamaica. That early work opened the door to three decades of funded research on the social context of Cannabis and the impact on health, development and performance of adults and children. Dr Dreher has authored and co-authored two books on Cannabis, numerous peer-reviewed articles, and several government reports.
Throughout her career, she has been a consistent advocate for an objective and scientific appraisal of Cannabis and its relationship with society. In addition to her academic role, she has taken on the responsibility of speaking to community groups, professional organisations and academics, using her leadership positions in health and education to enlighten the public on the history of Cannabis and its role in other societies. She has served as an expert witness in Cannabis-related cases in several states. As Dean of Nursing at the University of Iowa, her College of Nursing hosted the first clinical conference on Medical Cannabis almost 20 years ago, with the goal of exposing clinicians to an informed and reasoned use of Cannabis as medicine. Dr Dreher was awarded the first ‘Lester Grinspoon National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws Award’ for her sustained commitment to seeking the truth about Cannabis. While conducting her research, she received the Ambassador’s citation for her humanitarian work in Jamaica.
In a 2013 interview, Dr Dreher discussed the 40 years of studies she was involved with in Jamaica. There, Cannabis is used for a variety of medicinal, therapeutic and preventative uses. These studies refuted many of the assumptions attributed to Cannabis use, particularly regarding pregnancy and infant development.

At the International Cannabinoid Research Society’s 2014 Symposium, a 2013 study, Role of 5HT1A Receptors on the Neuroprotective and Neuro-behavioural Effects of Cannabidiol in Hypoxic-Ischaemic Newborn Pigs, highlighted the amazing potential of cannabidiol (CBD) for premature babies: At one day old the piglets were robbed of oxygen to the brain to mimic hypoxic-ischaemic conditions: the brain damage caused by the oxygen deprivation often brought on by severe apnoea and/or cardiac stress events premature babies sometimes experience multiple times per day. Following verification of the induced brain damage the piglets were given cannabidiol (CBD) oil – one group received one dose of CBD oil thirty minutes after the event and another group was given only three very, very small doses over the course of six days. Later the piglets brains were compared against those of normal, healthy piglets. In looking at each of the eight regions of the piglets brains, the researchers were “shocked and amazed” to report full restoration and not just that, “full restoration in each of the eight sections of the brain and evidence of neuro-protection in all cells”. The piglets were dosed with considerably small amounts of CBD oil; 1 milligram per kilogram of weight “there were no differences between piglets receiving one dose or three doses of CBD”. What that means for premature babies is a neuro-protective result from less than 1 milligram of CBD oil. Less than 1 mg (there are 1000 mg in each gram of Cannabis oil).
In Australia, in 2011, 8.3% of babies were born pre-term (before 37 completed weeks gestation).
Extremely pre-term (
“The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists suggests that pre-term birth rates have increased because of a dramatic rise in late pre-term births, defined as births between 34 weeks and 36-6/7 weeks of gestation. Late pre-term newborns are the fastest growing subset of neonates, accounting for approximately 74% of all pre-term births and about 8% of total births”.
USA Pre-term Birth Rates (National 2007) Pre-term birth rates per 100 births in each specified gestational age category.
less than 37 weeks’ gestation 12.7
less than 28 weeks’ gestation 0.8
less than 34 weeks’ gestation 3.6
34–36 weeks’ gestation 9.0
One tiny gram of CBD oil could potentially treat up to 1,000 babies (1,000 premature babies born weighing less than a kilogram [2.2 lbs]) and induce “neuro-protection”, that which is so desperately necessary for these high-risk infants. Premature babies are at high risk for hypoxic-ischaemic brain damage. Many do not survive their premature birth with few long-term effects. Most struggle to survive, sometimes for the rest of their lives due to the circumstances of their birth and the pharmaceutical manner in which many of their conditions are treated. Can any parent or grandparent sit idly by knowing there is a non-toxic, low-dose traditional, complementary medicine that is an option – scientifically proven – that’s being overlooked because so few medical professionals and policy makers know anything of the science of Cannabinoid medicine? Few have ever heard of the ECS (Endocannabinoid System) and its amazing ability to heal the body and protect, not harm, the brain. Researchers have spent many decades looking for safe, non-toxic remedies for a wide-variety of illnesses and conditions. In 1988 the ECS was discovered, so there is still much that medical science hasn’t explored. Fortunately, some jurisdictions are beginning to see the stigma lifted from this research arena (Israel, Canada etc.). It’s time for the science to reach the masses so the entire world can learn there is a safe, non-toxic (and cheap) choice, an option beyond the current raft of often hazardous and toxic treatments.
In the United States the science required to remove Cannabis from their Schedule of Controlled Substances has been conducted and is far more than adequate (there are more studies done on Cannabis than on many FDA approved pharmaceuticals) and every citizen with an ECS (100%) and every citizen who supports the Americanisation of Cannabis (87%) still waits for the federal government to take action. In Australia we are still in the grip of archaic ‘reefer madness’ even though the International Centre for Science in Drug Policy (ICSDP) has debunked the most common misinformation about Cannabis with their Cannabis Claims campaign.
The educational chasm between endocannabinoid researchers and family physicians is greater than the gap between patient and doctor or even patient and researcher. Many of today’s patients are self-educated and rely heavily on other patients for information, plus they embody a specific type of knowledge regarding the use of Cannabis, one that still fails to reach researchers, medical professionals, policy-makers, or the masses to a significant degree. Understanding the ECS (Endocannabinoid System) will continue to shed light on the natural role cannabinoids play. While there is still a great deal of research that needs to be done before we can fully understand how Cannabis works, there is already substantial evidence that this plant has exceptional medicinal value.

Netball: Then and Now
Tumblr media
Netball is the most popular women's team participation sport in Australia and Netball schools like SEDA NT. In 1995, there were over 360,000 Australian netball players. Throughout most of Australia's netball history, the game has largely been a participation sport; it has not managed to become a large spectator sport. Netball has a colorful history and is now widely known in Australia and across the globe. Netball schools such as SEDA NT are now offering Netball related programmes not just for sports but as an applied education for the students’ career in the future.
During an Australian tour of England in 1957, discussions took place concerning standardising the rules of the sport and this led to representatives from England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and The West Indies meeting in Sri Lanka in 1960, to establish The International Federation of Women’s Basketball and Netball. Formal rules were established at this inaugural meeting and it was decided to hold World Championship tournaments every four years, beginning in Eastbourne, England, in 1963. Since then World Championships have been held in Australia 1967, Jamaica 1971, New Zealand 1975, Trinidad & Tobago 1979, Singapore 1983, Scotland 1987, Australia 1991, England 1995 and New Zealand 1999.
Throughout this period, Australia has dominated, winning the event in 1971, 1975, 1979, 1983, 1991, 1995 and 1999. The 2003 World Netball Championships in Kingston, Jamaica saw New Zealand finally breaking the Australian dominance taking Gold. The 2007 World Netball Championships was due to take place in Fiji but a political coup in the country led to the event being transferred to Auckland, New Zealand. Despite the home advantage, New Zealand were unable to defend their crown and Australia were once more World Champions. Australia retained their title in 2011 in Singapore and in 2015 in Sydney.
The Netball NT Sports Development programme is a joint initiative between SEDA NT and Netball NT. SEDA NT's Netball programme training and assessment is delivered by SEDA NT. This  is a nationally recognised training on behalf of Charles Darwin University as the Registered Training Organisation (RTO ID 0373), Year 12 VET Qualification delivered by SEDA Group RTO 22503 and NTCET qualification issued through Casuarina Secondary College.
Students from Netball school such as SEDA NT have the opportunity to get involved in a range of participation programs, applied education and events including promotion and marketing for Net Set GO! Involvement in school and community netball clinics, match day assistance at Netball NT events and competitions, Event management at Australian Netball Championships and also Access to Edge Health Club in Casuarina. Netball School also offers additional programmes and applied education such as Foundation Coaching Course, Development Coaching Course, Level 1 Umpiring and Apply First Aid.
At SEDA, we are committed to achieving meaningful changes and providing applied education that leads to life successes for each of our students. In choosing SEDA, we work to provide tailored careers plans for individual student, unique industry opportunities, education for life beyond school and hands-on learning environment.
