In the late 1960s, it seemed as if the performance car world was at a crossroads. With the introduction of Lamborghini’s P400 Miura and its revolutionary mid-engined design, some thought this design would be the future for the upper echelons of performance cars, and that front-engined cars would begin to fade from popularity.

Spurred on by the success of the Miura, Ferrari knew that the replacement of the 275 GTB/4 needed to be something spectacular and new in order to take the fight to Lamborghini. Rather than move to a mid-engined format, it was decided that the front-engined V-12 platform would remain, alongside coachwork penned by Pininfarina. Quite simply, if it works for you and your clients, why go about reinventing the wheel? After all, this is what Ferrari had built their reputation on, and there was no one better at building twelve-cylinder, front-engined GT cars than Ferrari. They were not to be outdone by this team of renegades at Lamborghini, headquartered just down the road from Maranello!

Chassis number 10287 was the genesis of that new model of Ferraris and the Scuderia’s fighting back against the Lamborghini and the Miura. At first glance to the casual observer, the car offered here seems to tread the line between a 275 GTB/4 and a 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Visual cues to both can be seen and some design elements seem to have blended together, but this car is far more than a design study to determine Ferrari’s future. A total of six 365 GTB/4 prototypes would be built, but this example, as the first, remains the most recognizable, the most unique, the most significant, and is undoubtedly the most desirable.

Chassis number 10287 is that of a Tipo 596 chassis, the same type which was used for the 275 GTB/4, made of tubular steel and a wheelbase measuring 2,400 mm (a wheelbase length shared by both 275 GTB/4 and 365 GTB/4). At its heart is a completely unique Lampredi engine, one that would not be seen in any other Ferrari road car at the time. Designated Tipo 243 internally, it is fitted with dry sump, three-valve heads rather than the usual four valves per cylinder, dual ignition, twin spark plugs per cylinder, and is topped with six Weber 40 DCN18 carburetors. The block itself is based on that of a 330 GT but has been bored out to 4,380 cc. What is worth noting about this completely unique and radically redesigned engine is that it bears similarities to the engines found in the 330 P4 prototype racers, the race car that won numerous races and earned its place in the history books after their memorable 1-2 finish with a 412 P coming in third at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona. These racing cars also have double inlet valves with one exhaust valve per cylinder.

Aesthetically, the design in front of the windshield was similar to that of a 275 GTB/4, albeit with a slightly stretched and flattened nose, still boasting covered headlights and a bonnet with a central bulge similar to a 275 GTB/4. The shape of the tail section of the bodywork is instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with a Daytona, utilizing 275 GTB/4 boot hinges and a full-width rear chrome bumper. Chassis number 10287's side profile is most evocative of the production Daytona, and allegedly what Enzo Ferrari loved most about this particular prototype, featuring a near identical rear ¾ section and roofline. Looking at the nose and bonnet, similarities can be seen between this and Jaguar’s E-Type.

Once completed in early 1967, 10287 saw extensive factory testing at the Modena Autodrome over the course of that year. It was first registered on May 8, 1968, wearing Italian number plates ‘Roma B 85391’ through the official Ferrari dealer in Rome, Motor S.a.s. di Carla Allegretti e C, noting a sales price of 8,000,000 Italian Lira. It is interesting to note that, at the time, this was similar in price to a new 275 GTB/4, but by that time, the production version of the 365 GTB/4 Daytona had yet to be introduced, this being about five months before the 1968 Paris Auto Salon.

Actor Jason Momoa, a car lover and the villain in the most recent "Fast and Furious" movie, recently had his 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom converted to run on batteries. He didn't do the modification work himself, though. Instead he turned to the U.K.'s Electrogenic, which prepared a bespoke solution for the Phantom. The company, based on Oxford, also offers so-called EV conversion drop-in kits that can be had for early Land Rovers, including the original Defender, plus the Jaguar E-Type, original Mini, and the 964-generation Porsche 911. For the Phantom, the original engine, a 7.7-liter inline-6 developing 40-50 hp, and the original 4-speed manual transmission, were replaced with an electric motor with a custom single-speed direct-drive transmission. The electric motor generates 201 hp and draws its energy from a 93-kwh battery positioned within the existing structure of the car. The range is around 150 miles, according to Electrogenic.

FLIGHTLINE: 185 - ISRAELI AIRCRAFT INDUSTRIES KFIR ("LION CUB")

Developed from the IAI Nesher, itself an unlicensed copy of the Dassault Mirage 5, the Kfir served with the IAF as well as several export countries.

In the early 1960 the Israeli Air Force purchased a force of nearly four dozen Dassault Mirage IIIC aircraft, mainly fighter variants, along with a few configured for recon and four two-place trainers. The Mirage was the first Mach-2 aircraft in the IAF, and served throughout the Sixties as the backbone of the force. The Israelis were disappointed in the range of the IIIC however, which reduced the usefulness of the plane in the ground-attack role. Dassault responded by developing the Mirage 5, a fair-weather nuclear-capable version which had a longer range. By the time Dassault completed the IAF's order however, changing political winds in France saw an embargo placed on Israel, and the 50 Mirage Vs ordered wound up in the French Air Force instead.

Undeterred, a copy of the Mirage 5 was produced by Israeli Aircraft Industries as the IAI Nesher using plans and specifications acquired from other Mirage users as well as plans for the 5 acquired by espionage. The Nesher wasn't quite the plane the IAF needed, however, and IAI set about developing a better version. In addition to improving the aerodynamics of the design, a more powerful engine was sought, and two were selected for trials: the GE J79 turbojet and the Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan. Despite the Spey being more powerful, the J79 was chosen and a license agreement signed by Beit Shemesh Engines Ltd. to produce the engine in Israel. The design was altered to accommodate the larger jet, with the aft fuselage shortened and widened, with larger intakes fitted to the front, and an auxiliary intake was added to the tail fin to admit extra air to cool the afterburner. A titanium heatshield was added as well. The prototype, codenamed the Ra'am B ("Thunder B") took it's maiden flight in June 1973. The Ra'am had a redesigned cockpit as well as strengthened landing gear, reconfigured fuel tanks which increased capacity to 713gal total, and small canard foreplanes added above and behind the intakes. The Ra'am B also had a large percentage of domestic avionics.

The Ra'am B was approved for production and was now called the Kfir ("lion cub") C.1. The Kfir, like the Ra'am B and Mirage 5 before it, had a delta wing with a wingspan of 8.22m, while the aircraft was 15.65m long and 4.55m tall. Empty weight was 7,285kg, while the max TO weight was 16,200kg. The J79-J1E turbojet, which produced 11,900lb thrust (17,900lb with afterburner) pushed the Kfir to a maximum speed of Mach 2.3, a service ceiling of 17,680m, and a combat range of 768km (carrying seven bombs, two missiles and two drop tanks). Armament consisted of two 30mm DEFA cannon with 140 rounds per gun, while stores could be up to 5,775kg of unguided SNEB or Matra JL-100 rocket pods, AIM-9 or locally produced Shafrir or Python AAMs, Shrike anti-radiation missiles, AGM-65 guided missiles, or a variety of unguided or guided bombs, including specialty weapons like the TAL series of cluster bombs and the Matra Durandal anti-runway munition. The Kfir could also be fitted with reconnaissance pods.

The first C.1 were delivered to the 101st "First Fighter" Squadron in 1975, and served as the IAF's primary air superiority plane, flying alongside the McDonnnell F-4, which had by then been acquired from the US. The C.1 was swiftly followed by the improved C.2 variant, which had dogtoothed leading edges, small strakes under the nose and more highly swept canards. The C.2 was the first version to see combat, participating in an airstrike against a training camp near Tel Azia, Lebanon on 9 November 1977. Two years later, another C.2 gained the Kfir's only air-to-air kill, shooting down a Syrian MiG-21. During the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon the Kfirs had ceded the air superiority role to the F-15 and F-16, and so they were mainly used for strike missions, often flying unescorted. Beginning the following year, the Kfir C.2 were updated to C.7 standards, which included an uprated J79 engine, two additional pylons under the wings, a new Elta El/M-2021B radar, an updated cockpit featuring hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) controls, an inflight refueling probe and larger canards. A trainer version, the two-seat TC.7, was also developed. Despite the Kfir's abilities, the availability of the superior F-15I Ra'am and F-16I Sufa led to the type's retirement in the mid-1990s.

FOREIGN SERVICE

Despite being manufactured in Israel (under license), the Kfir's use of the J79 means that sales of the fighter are subject to approval by the US State Department. Despite this, the Kfir has been exported to several countries. The first client was Ecuador, which purchased twelve ex-IAF Kfir, ten C.2 and two TC.2 trainers, in 1981, which were delivered to the FAE in 1982-83. The Kfir saw action in the 1995 conflict between Ecuador and Peru, where they acted as escorts for the Ecuadorian A-37s. On 10 February 1995, an Ecuadorian C.2 shot down a Peruvian A-37, scoring the FAE's only kill with the type to date. In 1996 three more C.2 and a third TC.2 were acquired. A third purchase of eight of the newly developed C.10 model was blocked by the US, but a second option to purchase two C.10 and upgrade some or all of the existing fleet of C.2 to the same standard was approved. The C.10 is broadly similar to the C.7 in capacity, but is tailored for export, and has both helmet-mounted display and two multi-function displays in the cockpit. The C.10, also known as the CE by the FAE, also has the ability to fire upgraded Python 3 and 4 IR missiles. As of 2005, four of Ecuador's Kfir are known to have been lost in accidents, three fighters and one of the TC.2s.

The US Navy and USMC leased a force of 25 C.1 between 1985 and 1989, these aircraft were officially designated the F-21A Lion and were used by Navy Fighter Squadron 43 (VF-43) at NAS Oceana, Virginia and Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 (VMFT-40) at MCAS Yuma, Arizona for dissimilar air combat training. The F-21A were painted in schemes commonly worn by Warsaw Pact aircraft, specifically the MiG-23, which was then seeing widescale introduction, and whos performance the Kfir/Lion largely matched. The USN and USMC Lions were modified with the addition of narrow-chord canards and two strakes on either side of their noses, both of which improved low-speed maneuverability and handling. The US Navy F-21A were returned to Israel in 1988 and were replaced by the F-16N, while the USMC F-21 were returned in 1989 and were replaced by F-5E Tiger IIs, although these were not as capable as the Lions.

In addition to the USN/USMC F-21s, six ex-IAF Kfir were purchased by Airborne Tactical Advantage Company of Newport News, VA to serve as aggressor aircraft in training by US Navy, USAF and Air National Guard units. ATAC also flies Mirage F.1s, Hawker Hunters, A-4 Skyhawks and L-39 Albatroses. One of ATAC's Kfir crashed at NAS Fallon on 6 March 2012, killing the pilot.

The Colombian Air Force (FAC) acquired 12 ex-IAF Kfir C.2 and one TC.2 in 1989, which were upgraded to C.7 standards and which saw use in counter-insurgency missions in the late 80's and 90's. A deal for twenty-four more aircraft was signed in 2008. These ex-IAF C.7 were upgraded to C.10 or C.12 standards (the C.12 is largely similar to the C.10, but lack radar) before deliveries began in 2009. FAC's existing C.2s were also upgraded under the same deal. On 1 November 2013 two Russian Air Force Tu-160 Blackjack bombers took off from Simon Bolivar Airport in Venezuela and crossed into Colombian air space, where they were intercepted and escorted out by FAC Kfirs. In 2017 FAC's C.10s were upgraded to EL/M 2052 AESA radar, which allows the planes to fire the I-Derby-ER, an extended range variant of its Derby FAF (fire-and-forget) active-radar missile as well as the advanced Python-5 beyond-visual-range (BVR) IR missile. As of 2019 23 of FAC's Kfir remain in service.

Between 1995 and 2005 the Sri Lankan Air Force acquired ten C.2, one TC.2 and four C.7, all ex-IAF aircraft. The SLAF Kfir saw action against LTTE rebels during the long-running Sri Lankan civil war, during which time two C.7 were destroyed by rebels on the ground in 2001, and three more to training accidents. In 2011, two Kfir collided in midair during a practice session for an airshow. In June 2021 the SLAF finalized a contract to upgrade five of their Kfir and return them to service.

NO LONGER "CUBS"

Even today, IAI continues to develop and offer upgrades of the Kfir. The Block 60 are existing aircraft which have undergone extensive refurbishment, essentially returning them to zero airframe and powerplant hours. The Block 60 also incorporate the EL/M-2032 AESA radar, which gives look-down/shoot-down capability as well as tracking of up to 64 targets. Finally, Block 60 aircraft feature an open-source architecture, allowing clients to tailor the avionics to their needs and sources. Colombia has expressed interest in upgrading their aircraft, and other Block 60s have been offered to Bulgaria and Argentina.

Colombia, Ecuador and Sri Lanka have also been offered the Kfir NG (Next Generation), which can be either refitted older Kfir or new-build aircraft, powered by a GE-414 which is lighter, smaller and more fuel-efficient but more powerful than the J79 it replaces, allowing the Kfir NG to carry an additional kiloliter of fuel. The wing is also upgraded with new slats and fly-by-wire technology. Upgrades to the radar include the same EL/M-2052 AESA as the C.10, as well as the open system architecture and cockpit of the C.10 and Block 60.

This aircraft first flew 16th November 1972 and spent its life as a trials aircraft and as such has some non-standard components. Weapons carriage and stress monitoring were the main areas for which XX109 was utilised. High profile motorway takeoff and landing trials on the M55 near Preston, were undertaken by this aircraft in April 1979. It wears the markings of 54(F) Squadron using the type at RAF Coltishall from 1974 to 2005.

The SEPECAT Jaguar is an Anglo-French Jet Attack Aircraft originally used by the Royal Air Force and the French Air Force in the close Air Support and Nuclear Strike Role, it's still in service with the Indian Air Force. Originally conceived in the 1960's as a Jet Trainer Aircraft with a Light Ground Attack capability, the requirement for the Aircraft soon changed to include Supersonic Performance, Reconnaissance and Tactical Nuclear Strike Roles. A Carrier-Based Variant was also planned for French Navy service, but this was cancelled in favour of the cheaper Dassault Super Étendard. The Aircraft were manufactured by SEPECAT (Société Européenne de Production de l'avion Ecole de Combat et d'Appui Tactique) a joint venture between Breguet and the British Aircraft Corporation, one of the first major joint Anglo-French Military Aircraft Programmes.

The Jaguar was exported to India, Oman, Ecuador and Nigeria, the Aircraft was used in numerous Conflicts and Military Operations in Mauritania, Chad, Iraq, Bosnia, and Pakistan, as well as providing a ready Nuclear Delivery Platform for the United Kingdom, France, and India throughout the latter half of the Cold War and beyond. In the Gulf War, the Jaguar was praised for its reliability and was a valuable Coalition Resource. The Aircraft served with the French Air Force as the Main Strike/Attack Aircraft until the 1st of July 2005, and with the Royal Air Force until the end of April 2007. It was replaced by the Panavia Tornado and the Eurofighter Typhoon in the RAF and the Dassault Rafale in the French Air Force.

The SEPECAT Jaguar is an Orthodox Single-Seat, Swept-Wing, Twin-Engine Monoplane design, with tall Tricycle-Type Retractable Landing Gear,Ii its original configuration, the Jaguar had a maximum take-off weight in the 15 tonne class with a Combat Radius on internal fuel of 530 miles, giving the Jaguar a greater Operational Range than competitor Aircraft such as the Mikoyan MiG-27. The Aircraft had 'Hardpoints' fitted for an External Weapons Load of up to 10,000lb. Typical Weapons fitted included the MATRA LR.F2 Rocket Pod, BAP 100-mm Bombs, MATRA AS37 Anti-Radar Missiles, AIM-9 Sidewinder Missiles, and Rockeye Cluster Bombs. The RAF's Jaguars gained several new Weapons during the Gulf War, including CRV7 High-Velocity Rockets and American CBU-87 Cluster Bombs. Finally, the Jaguar was equipped with either a pair of French DEFA Cannons, or British ADEN Cannons. The Jaguar International had the unusual option of Overwing Pylons, used for Short-Range Air-to-Air Missiles, such as the Matra R550 Magic or the Sidewinder. This option freed up the Under-Wing Pylons for other Weapons and Stores. RAF Jaguars gained Overwing Pylons in the buildup to Operation Granby in 1990, but the French Jaguars were not modified.

Jaguar XK150 Roadster (3.4 litre)

The Volkswagen SP2 + The New (Almost) Production-Ready SP Concept Car

The Volkswagen SP2 is a car much loved in Brazil, but little known outside the South American country. The car is a small sport coupe that was designed and made in Brazil for the local market, using largely local VW components.

The styling of the car would have a strong influence on the VW/Porsche developed Porsche 924, and in recent years a team of automotive engineers have designed an all new SP. This turnkey design is currently waiting for a small volume automaker to put it into production, giving the SP an all new life in the 21st century.

Brazil: A Nation that Banned Imported Cars

Brazil was a nation that almost entirely banned the importation of motor vehicles during the 1960’s and 1970’s thus forcing car manufacturers to either set up vehicle production in Brazil or not have access to that market.

Volkswagen were one of the companies that set up manufacturing in the country and they finished up having a two thirds share of the Brazilian market: something that they were no doubt quite happy about, and something the Brazilians employed by Volkswagen do Brazil were quite happy about too.

The other dimension to this is that most car buyers are not the slightest bit interested in purchasing a sports car. Most people want comfortable, reliable and affordable transportation. Hence Volkswagens became the most popular cars in Brazil.

Brazilian Sports Cars

With the import ban in place it was a foregone conclusion that small scale specialist sports car builders would spring up. During the 1960’s a Brazilian company named Puma began making limited production sports cars using chassis of their own design with fiberglass bodywork and fitted with engines and mechanical components from DKW, Volkswagen, or General Motors.

Another sports car was the Willy’s Interlagos, which was a Renault Alpine A108 built locally. So there were sports cars being made in Brazil and they were in some ways quite like the British small volume specialist makers such as Lotus or TVR. They were cars that were fun, and affordable.

It was to be a conversation between one of the directors of Brazilian sports car maker Puma and the head of Volkswagen in Brasil that would precipitate the creation of the Volkswagen SP. The Puma director suggested that because Volkswagen Brazil did not have a stylish sports car that the pride of place on the Volkswagen stand at the 1969 Brazilian motor show should be a Puma (built on Volkswagen parts of course).

The head of Volkswagen Brazil, Rudolph Leiding, was probably not amused although I suspect he smiled politely even as he quietly began formulating a plan

Volkswagen’s Project X: A Car for the Ladies as well as for the Gentlemen

The stylish coupé that Volkswagen Brazil were making was the Karmann Ghia but this was due to be phased out and the head of Volkswagen Brazil, Rudolph Leiding, could see that there was a need for a suitable replacement in the form of a stylish sporting coupé.

Rudolph Leiding wisely had some discussions with his wife Helga in order to gauge what sort of stylish coupé would appeal to Brazilian women: women tend to look for different things in a car by comparison with men and Rudolph Leiding wanted the new car to appeal to both men and women.

Leiding made initial sketches of the car he envisioned and a Mr. Schiemann was appointed to head up “Project X” as the new initiative was called. Volkswagen Brazil’s in-house designer Marcio Piancastelli was briefed on the project and Leiding’s sketches handed over to him. The plan was to build the new sports coupé on the platform of the locally produced Volkswagen Type 3 “Variant” which featured typical Volkswagen torsion bar suspension and four cylinder horizontally opposed air-cooled engine.

For Marcio Piancastelli there was quite a bit of design inspiration available in the late 1960’s as he got to work. Jaguar’s E-Type had been called “The most beautiful car in the world” by none other than Enzo Ferrari and Japanese company Toyota had made everyone sit up and take notice when they unveiled their 2000GT.

Chevrolet’s C2 Corvette was also a real head turner. Piancastelli had done an internship with Ghia and was very capable of bringing Italian style to Project X despite the fact that it was to be based on the Volkswagen Type 3 platform. Could Piancastelli design something that looked like it should be a Porsche? He was about to prove that he could and in 1971 the concept car made its debut just as Rudolph Leiding was leaving Brazil with his wife Helga to take up his new position in charge of Volkswagen globally.

The Volkswagen Type 3 was actually a good foundation for a sporting coupé: it was much more sophisticated than the original Volkswagen Type 1 “Beetle” and this was especially true by 1968. By 1966 the Type 3 was made with a 1.6 liter (1,584 cc) version of the “pancake” (aka “suitcase”) four cylinder air-cooled engine. This engine had the cooling fan located at the end of the crankshaft to lower its height and was mounted on a separate sub-frame which also contained the rear suspension.

This unit was then mounted to the body using rubber mountings, a design that was highly effective in isolating vibration and road noise. In 1968 this engine was the first in a volume production car to be fitted with the Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection system. Not only that but also in 1968 a three speed automatic version was made available.

The front suspension of the Type 3 was improved over the Type 1 also. The Type 1’s transverse leaf spring torsion bars were done away with and the Type 3 became the first fitted with transverse round torsion bars. For the front suspension the round torsion bar was located in the lower torsion bar tube while the upper one had the anti-roll bar attached to the upper trailing links on each side.

1968 saw another major advance with the old style swing axles replaced by a double jointed CV joint which kept the rear wheel camber consistent and eliminated the infamous handling vice of the Type 1 caused by the swing axles. The Type 3’s brakes were also upgraded to discs at the front and drums at the rear.

So the Type 3 platform that Marcio Piancastelli had to work with had a great deal of potential: with the right engine under the car it could almost have become a Brazilian Porsche (of sorts).

The Volkswagen SP Enters Production

The Volkswagen SP that Rudolph Leiding had sketched the concept for and Marcio Piancastelli had created entered production in 1973 and it proved to be a real head-turner. It had looks that seemed to combine a touch of Porsche with an Italian feel. The lines of the car were sleek, well proportioned, and flowing.

The interior was no disappointment either, unless you were over 6 feet tall that is in which case it would start becoming a tad snug. The dashboard was a purposeful design with a large tachometer and speedometer directly in front of the driver and four smaller gauges in the center; water temperature, oil pressure, fuel and clock. The interior was a quite brilliant blending of comfort with GT car instrumentation and controls.

The SP had a lot more going for it than its looks however. Piancastelli had design engineered it to be a car with impressive safety credentials. The steering column was collapsible, the brake hydraulics dual circuit, but the most interesting feature was the “collision belt”. The “collision belt” was comprised of “collision proof” structures that circled the perimeter of the car.

It included the bumpers which were spring loaded by being mounted on spring steel claws which would absorb impact, especially the 5 mph impact specified by US regulators, and side structures to protect against side collisions. The front, rear and side collision belt was covered in gloss painted rubber. It is very clear in the attention to engineering crash protection that Volkswagen do Brasil were intending to market the SP in the US and other world markets.

The SP was made in two models; the SP1 was the entry level model and the SP2 was the more up-market model. The SP1 featured quad headlights while on the more powerful SP2 the quad headlights were quartz iodine. The car was designed to provide excellent visibility and was fitted with front quarter vents to assist with ventilation along with opening rear quarter windows also.

Although the Volkswagen Type 3 in other markets was fitted with the Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection system this was not the case for Brazil. In Brazil the quality of the fuel was quite low and so the compression ratio of the engines used and their state of tune had to be kept low. Two engines were used; the Volkswagen SP1 was fitted with the same 1.6 liter engine as the Type 3 but with twin Solex carburetors and producing 65 bhp (DIN).

The Volkswagen SP2 was fitted with a larger 1.8 liter engine also with twin Solex carburetors and producing 75 bhp (DIN). Performance of the more powerful SP2 was for a standing to 60 mph time around 16 seconds and a top speed of 100 mph. The SP1 was significantly slower and perhaps it could be said that it didn’t so much accelerate as “gain momentum”.

The SP1 was dropped from production by the time 88 cars had been made, leaving the SP2 as the sole model.

The Volkswagen SP had a lot more luggage carrying space than is common in the majority of sports cars or GT coupés. Because of Volkswagen engine there was a good amount of boot space above the engine, much the same amount as one would find in a Jaguar E-Type for example.

But that was not all, in typical Volkswagen style there was also a good luggage area in the front of the car. The spare wheel was stored at the very front leaving a decent luggage area behind the front axle line. So as a practical coupé the SP was intelligently laid out.

The “SP” name had originally been intended to stand for “San Paolo”, where the car was designed and made. However Brazilians have a sense of humor and pretty soon the “SP” was said to stand for “Sem Potência” which translates as “without power”, or in English we might make that “Slow Poke”.

That being said those who owned the SP2 seem to have a great affection for them despite the lack of road burning horsepower. As a comfortable coupé for touring the power was seemingly enough and the car was enjoyable to own and to drive. The SP2 was kept in production for three years with the last cars rolling off the production line in 1976 after a fairly respectable 10,205 had been made.

Given that the SP2 was made on the Volkswagen Type 3 platform it would not have been rocket science to dramatically improve the car’s performance by fitting a larger and more powerful engine: Volkswagen certainly had a range of suitable engines that could have been chosen and which would have been easy to fit.

But by that stage of Volkswagen’s history it was moving away from the 1930’s vintage rear-mounted air-cooled four cylinder boxer engines and migrating to water-cooled front-mounted engines and front wheel drive. Rudolph Leiding had been instrumental in pushing for that change and it was he who directed Volkswagen away from a Porsche designed prototype for the new Volkswagen Golf that had a mid-mounted engine.

That was the EA266 which featured a mid-mounted in-line four cylinder liquid cooled 105hp engine laid horizontally and placed under the rear passenger seat.

Volkswagen do Brasil did consider a suitable solution to the “Slow Poke” problem which would have been called the SP3 and which would be fitted with a 1.8 liter water-cooled four cylinder engine as used in the Brazilian Volkswagen Passat TS.

That engine had a compression ratio of 8.5:1 and was fitted with twin carburetors which enabled it to produce 99 hp @ 6,000 rpm. A prototype was made by an independent Brazilian company called Dacon who offered conversion kits for SP1 and SP2 cars. Unfortunately the cost of the kits seems to have been too high and not many were sold.

A Porsche “Volkswagen SP”: The Porsche 924

The Volkswagen SP had garnered quite a bit of attention in Brazil and in Volkswagen/Porsche circles. Although the Volkswagen SP only remained in production in Brazil for three years the idea got Volkswagen in Germany thinking, helped along by Rudolph Leiding in his role at the head of Volkswagen internationally.

The idea for a Volkswagen sports car/coupé, that Leiding had instigated and developed in Brazil was embraced by Volkswagen in Germany and work began in cooperation with Porsche to create a suitable model, whose design was very much inspired by the Volkswagen SP.

The project was designated EA425 and it re-located the engine to the front of the car with a transaxle at the rear: this gave the car a 48/52 front to rear weight distribution.

With a successful and very affordable design largely complete the EA425 was ready to rock and roll off the assembly lines but the oil crisis of 1973 persuaded Volkswagen to stop work on the project and sell it back to Porsche while Volkswagen moved ahead with their Scirocco model. Porsche completed the car as a replacement for the Porsche 914 and introduced it as the Porsche 924 in 1976.

The VW SP2 is Re-Created For The 21st Century

The Volkswagen SP may have been nicknamed the “Sem Potência” but it carved a place for itself in many Brazilian hearts as their home grown sports coupé that was almost a Porsche, and which in reality had been transformed into the basis for the Porsche 924.

So it should come as no surprise that in this twenty-first century that a group of Mechanical Automotive Engineering students at the FEI College (Educational Foundation of Ignatius) in Brazil decided to base their course major project on it. Final year students in this course were required to design a vehicle and its major components as a major assignment.

Around the table a group comprising Rafael Tardelli, Sebastián Honbono, Flavio Koiti, Eduardo Samartino and Fernando Piaya, looked at various options and considered that there had been a move to recreate “retro” style cars, such as the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Morris Mini and Fiat 500 “Bambino”.

So as the discussions progressed the group decided that they could create a new version of Brazil’s Volkswagen SP that had almost become a Brazilian Porsche.

The student’s professor of vehicular dynamics and suspension, Mr. Ricardo Bock, was also teaching the Car Design Course, at the FAAP College (Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation) and finding that the retro Volkswagen SP2 project to be a very interesting one brought students from the two colleges together.

Professor Bock’s idea was to have the engineering and design students work together to actually create a design that could be built. The meeting brought together not only students but professors who had been working in the Brazilian car industry during the 1960’s and including Brazilian designer Ari Rocha, who worked at Studio Fissore and at DKW. It was he who subsequently introduced the students to the designer of the Volkswagen SP2, Márcio Piancastelli, and also to José Vicente Novita Martins (Jota) who had designed a number of Volkswagen cars.

Armed with background drawings, photographs and time spent with original designers from the 1960’s and 1970’s, the students went to work to create the design for a new version of the Volkswagen SP2, and they designed it so it could be built and driven. They used a tubular space frame chassis as is common for small scale sports car producers. The 1020 steel tubing was to have an external diameter of 50.8mm with a wall thickness of 2.5mm.

Suspension was to be by unequal length wishbones, “A” arms at the front and “H” style at the rear. Brakes would be discs all around.

The choice of engine remained with a standard Volkswagen/Audi engine, and the students chose the 1,984 cc, turbocharged, TFSI (Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection) engine which produced 195 kW (262hp) @ 6400 rpm and torque of 350 Nm (358lb/ft) at 3500 rpm.

The design team decided that the engine was to be mounted in the center (i.e. mid-mounted) and so it would most likely be mated to a transaxle as used for a front wheel drive car, but with the unit in the mid-engine position driving the rear wheels, in a similar set-up to the Lamborghini Muira. The SP Concept design is 4,143.43 mm long, 1,810.00 mm wide, and 1,191.00 mm high.

Given that this new SP would have more than triple the engine power of the original SP2 there is no way that this car could be called “Sem Potência”, in fact “Super Performance” might be more apropos.

With a mid-mounted transverse four cylinder engine the SP Concept could potentially have decent luggage carrying capacity in the front and perhaps a small additional space in the rear: making it a very practical touring car. Weight distribution should also be close to an idea 50/50, especially with a spare wheel stored in the front, and potentially the battery fitted in the front also. From the concept pictures it would seem the radiator was planned to be front mounted

In computer simulated wind tunnel testing the SP Concept achieved a respectable drag coefficient of 0.34. Overall the design looks to provide great stability, including high speed highway stability, and with its fully independent suspension should also provide excellence in handling.

The students had a student named Rafael Reston create the 3D modeling of their car and created a 1:5 scale model which they presented at a college event in 2003. Their design was much admired, being awarded the “Best Car” of the event. This SP Concept was a fitting tribute to those who designed the original Volkswagen SP2, and also to the Brazilian automobile industry that had achieved some remarkable things in the period when importation of cars was almost totally banned.

Despite being labelled “Sem Potência” the Volkswagen SP2 was not only a successful touring coupé but it was also the car that gave us the Volkswagen EA425 concept and then from that the Porsche 924, which was a car that realized the potential in the Volkswagen SP design.

The college student’s SP Concept car demonstrates that the original vision is not dead, and perhaps there will be a small scale car manufacturer who takes a serious look at it with a view to making a new sports coupé.

Much of the hard design work is already done by a team of professional engineers, and the final car is a genuinely beautiful coupe that’s already winning the hearts and minds of those who see it.

Bad title for this question I know. I have never really had to go to the doctor for anything, ANYTHING. Recently I went to go see one because my energy level has been horrible, and I am always fatigued. After seeing the doctor, and getting lab work done, I had spent almost a $1000 dollars. But still, I'm okay with that, if its like one visit every six months or so, so what. Anyways, they found my Testosterone levels to be really really low. So they put me on a medication called androgel. Let me tell you, I can only get 15 days worth of this medication at a time, but every time I go to Walgreens to get a refill, I spend hundreds. Tonight when I picked it up it cost me $268.41. I called everywhere to see about health insurance, even though I only need help with prescriptions. I dont know what to do. I dont need all out full fledge health insurance. But apparently if I tried to get it anyway, I would be denied due to a pre-existing condition ((WTF))!! Apparently the only people who can qualify for health insurance are those who dont need it to begin with. And those who need it are denied because of a pre-existing condition. Daimler SP250 ‘B’ (1961). 

An unusual departure for a firm more noted for its stately limousines, the SP250 sports car was Daimler's final fling before its acquisition by Jaguar. Aimed at the North American market and launched in 1959, the SP250 employed a separate ladder-type chassis on which sat controversially styled glassfibre coachwork manufactured by Daimler themselves. Four-wheel disc brakes were an unusual feature at the time, but unquestionably the car's biggest virtue was its 2.5-litre V8 engine, designed by the legendary Edward Turner of Triumph motorcycles fame. An outstandingly flexible unit, the smaller of Daimler's two V8s produced 140bhp, an output good enough to propel the SP250 to a top speed of 125mph. In keeping with the demands of its intended market, automatic transmission was available as an option. The model survived Jaguar's 1960 take-over, benefitting from its new owner's attention that resulted in the much-improved 'B' version. Introduced in April 1961, the SP250 'B' boasted a stiffer chassis and thicker glassfibre coachwork, while its 'C' replacement, introduced in April 1963, differed only in detail. Sadly, the Jaguar E-Type's arrival meant the SP250's days were numbered and production ceased in 1964.
