"Against the world We don’t have a chance to Be ourselves Deep inside this patriarchy Post-it No room for girls The men never listen Our only choice Is to be so angry, angry"
The only thing that would have made this song better is Haru's iconic guttural screams ugh, i love her sm

so the songs for each playlist are picked from a larger seed playlist at random, and each week I task myself with trying to organize it in a loosely thematic way.
This week is apparently about bucking expectations and breaking rules. Which is good, because the playlist itself breaks one of my few rules for this experiment, which is not to use the same artist twice on a playlist. But, uh, I love k.flay, so... here we are.
Anyway, without further ado, this week's playlist:
Title Holder by The Interrupters
Lacrimosa by Huxlxy
High Enough (RAC Remix) by K.Flay
Meet Me By The River's Edge by The Gaslight Anthem
BABYDOLL by LUNA AURA
Suspect Device (Single Version) by Stiff Little Fingers
Punchline by Jaguar Jonze
Take the World by She Wants Revenge
Zen by X Ambassadors, K.Flay & grandson
I'm Beginning to Think You Prefer Beverly Hills 90210 to Me by Fight Like Apes

Jaguar Jonze -- Rabbit Hole (Australia Decides 2020)
"I will question I will doubt your answers Make my head stop and believe"
2020 was my first year listening to many of the national final songs, and I could do write-ups for a lot of them. Me ngjyros wasn't a song I followed during FiK, but really caught me over time. Oculis Videre was a spiritual experience throughout, and could've been my favorite Icelandic entry. Ringo Starr was a total jam in Sanremo, and was my first crack at the famous song festival.
Rabbit Hole, on the other hand, not only brought an interesting song and story, but introduced me to a talented artist.
When I heard about Jaguar's musical style, I went over to check out her songs. I like the cinematic feel and the bite her songs possess, from the sardonic Beijing Baby to the dim Rising Sun. Rabbit Hole continues in that direction, with frenzied lyrics about a mental health episode and a similarly dramatic soundscape.
This also played into the performance--Jaguar is stuck in a maze, and in the middle, the walls break apart, exposing her band outside. She shows commitment and creativity with her craft--she apparently dislocated her shoulder in the process!
We'll never know how it would do, seeing it didn't win and Covid struck months later. But I delved further into Jaguar's discovery, and fell in her love with her intriguing songs, as well as her courage to stand up for what's right. And while I'm happy for Voyager and really love their song Promise, I can bet Jaguar Jonze could have my favorite Australian entry ever...should they continue to participate.

lithuania is growing on me honestly, i love those parts in lithuanian (native languages in esc>>>>)
i expected something more from france - it’s good but i was a little let down (i guess nothing will beat fulenn for me)
australia is amazing. i liked “dreamer” a little bit more but this is still great music

hard agree w your post about male characters being so humanized by fans at all levels of pathetic and powerful, meanwhile female characters remain one-dimensional “queens” at best. (an aside, there’s a fun song called “don’t call me queen” by jaguar jonze and haru nemuri that touches on this phenomenon.) would you mind sharing some of your favourite female characters and strugglewomen? i’m in the mood to get obsessed with a new fictional failgirl ☺️
ty for the song rec! it's a fun bop :')
also re: recommendations-- if you haven't watched person of interest or read the southern reach series yet you absolutely should do so immediately do not pass go do not collect 2000 dollars
partly because they have incredible female characters, yeah (root (poi) and the biologist (southern reach) are two of my favourite characters of all time and poi in particular also has shaw, carter, the machine, control, kara... so many good women) but also because they are both just legitimately incredible in so many other ways, too. especially the southern reach series.
off the top of my head some other stuff with female characters that are fun in the way men usually get to be:
obligatory locked tomb recommendation even though i'm pretty sure everyone on tumblr has heard of it by now lol. so so so so many awful, pathetic, deranged women in it though <3 in so many flavours. so it's still a mandatory mention
borne (by the same author as the southern reach series)
thoroughbreds
dishonored 2 and dishonored: death of the outsider (emily, billie, and delilah are all So Good. u should start with disonored 1 because it's a continuous narrative trilogy and also it's a good game but fair warning that the first game is slim pickings when it comes to any women at all lol. DLC does have delilah and billie in it at least.)
stoker
the imperial radch series
and then there were none (2015)
unironically skulduggery pleasant lol
shadowrun: dragonfall (you should play hong kong too but my two fave female characters are in dragonfall)
widows
like any sarah waters
pathfinder: wrath of the righteous (kingmaker has a rly gr8 female character too but there's a lot less companion content in it than wotr so ymmv on whether it's worth it if you're just playing it for her. good game in general though!)
like any shirley jackson but especially we have always lived in the castle
i had Some Issues with the power by naomi alderman but it was still a fun idea executed well
divinity: original sin 2
extraordinary attorney woo
unironically final fantasy 13 lol again
these ones don't really count because they weren't conceived as women but if you play as a woman it adds a fun extra character/narrative dimension imo: prey, tyranny, cyberpunk 2077
this is more of an adjacent rec but if u like cheesy genre lesbian stuff with various permutations of dirtbag women then read like any lee winters book lmao
i hope you'll find at least some stuff you like!! definitely am gonna shoot awake at 3AM going "oh no if forgot xyz how" but this is a good start i think kdfgjd

CheapSweets Pick 'n' Mix - Best of 2022
What is is?

Shunka Ryougen, second full album from Japanese singer, songwriter and 'poetry-rapper' Haru Nemuri (real name: Haruna Kimishima)
What's it like?
If you'd told me at the start of 2022 that one of my favourite albums would be Japanese beat poetry with riot grrl/DIY sensibilities, I would have laughed, then told you that sounds weird, but kinda cool. And it is.
The album title roughly translates to 'spring fire lighting the fields ablaze'. J-pop but with heavy rap, punk, electronica and hardcore influences, and referencing everything from Fight Club to global warming to philosophy, this is an experimental album on multiple levels.
There is however a lack of polish to some parts of the album which may be a bit of an off-putter to some, but I appreciate the rawness and range of the music (and emotions) on display.
I feel I'd enjoy it even more if I even spoke a tiny bit of Japanese!
You might like it if you're a fan of:
Tricot, Jaguar Jonze, MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS, Pussy Riot, Björk, Fugazi
Lyrics such as:
春雷 轟けよ愛 こころが目覚めて 世界中あふれる そんなラブソングがうたいたいぜ!yeah!
I 生きていたいや いのちが目覚めて 世界中かがやく 新しいラブソングがうたいたいぜ!yeah!
(very rough translation)
Spring thunder
Roar, love
My heart awakens all over the world
I want to sing such a love song! Yeah!
I, I want to be alive
Life awakens
Shining all over the world
I want to sing a new love song! Yeah!
Don't just take my word for it:
Zhenzhen Yu from Pitchfork gives a thoughtful analysis of the album;
Carlos Vélez-Cancel from everythingisnoise.net praises the album's emotional depth and ambition;
Standout tracks:
Ikiru, Kick in the World (deconstructed), Old Fashioned
Where can I find it?
On youtube;
On BandCamp;
On Spotify;
On AppleMusic;
...and official website;
