Targeted Killing Cases: 5 years on, British national Jaggi Johal languishes in jail; trial yet to begin
It’s been five years since British national Jagtar Singh Jaggi Johal was arrested in targeted killing cases by Punjab Police, but his trial is yet to take off. A National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has also discharged seven accused of the charges under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in six targeted killing cases. Their trial too hasn’t seen the light of day. Johal was arrested…

“April 1995, Ontario: Jaswant Singh Khalra delivers his last international speech on his findings about the extra-judicial killings of young Sikhs by Punjab police and the Indian state. He speaks on an estimate they had once made that at least 2000 Sikh youth were missing in the Amritsar area alone. How the government responded to inquiry with “no knowledge” of these disappearances. Refusing to accept this, Jaswant Singh went to multiple crematoriums in Amritsar including Durgiana Mandir Crematorium.

He states the following: “We went and asked the employees there to just tell us this much that during this time, how many dead bodies did the police give you? Some said we burned 8-10 every day. Some said there was no way to keep an account; sometimes a truck full of bodies came, and sometimes 2-4 dead bodies. When we said we need an account, they told us we could get the account from one place, “The police gave us the dead bodies, and the municipal committee gave us the firewood.” He exposes “a detailed history of systematic human rights violations in which the police forces abducted, murdered, and secretly cremated an estimated 6,017 Sikhs in Amritsar district alone–then one of 13 districts in Punjab–from 1984 to 1995".

September 6th 1995: Jaswant Singh’s wife receives a phone call from a journalist stating that her husband has been taken by police. Her neighbors state that two men got out of a van and approached Khalra with a piece of paper, as if asking for directions. As soon as he looked at the paper, two more men jumped out of the van and all four abducted him. His family and friends speak to many police stations and all deny having any knowledge of his whereabouts. Police state that he was never arrested.

1996: An investigation reveals that he was held at a police station in Taran Taaran and at least nine officers were directly involved in the arrest and kidnapping.

Jaswant Singh Khalra’s death was a result of his research into state sponsored killings. He was killed by punjab police on the orders of KPS Gill, Chief of Police.

His story is only one of countless others. Today, it is echoed by the experiences of #JagtarSinghJohal. #FreeJaggiNow”

PUNJAB POLICE HAVE ABDUCTED A BRITISH SIKH ACTIVIST
Tumblr media
Scottish Sikh Jagtar (Jaggi) Singh Johal has been illegally abducted and detained in India without cause or access to legal representation since November 4, 2017. Today, he was presented in court and his legal council confirmed that he has been physically tortured. Jaggi was in Punjab for his wedding, and shortly after, police came in plain clothes and forcibly hooded him from behind and took him away in an unmarked vehicle to an undisclosed location.
The British High Commission failed to secure his release and he has been remanded until November 17th. His legal team has confirmed that he has been tortured and Jaspal Singh Manjhpur described the torture in a SikhSiyasat article: "Jaggi told me that he was tortured physically and mentally as his legs were forcibly stretched beyond limits and he was given electric shots on nipples, ears and genitals."
This is not something new, but a continuation of the history of abduction, torture, and disappearance of Sikh youth in India. There is a precedence of impunity and extra-judicial murder that has taken thousands of lives.
Jaswant Singh Khalra was a Human Rights advocate who exposed these crimes in the 80s & 90s, toured parliaments around the world and then returned to India where he was abducted, tortured and extra-judicially murdered by Indian officials in 1995. Twenty-two years after the illegal abduction and murder of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, Jagtar Singh Johal has been abducted and tortured for exposing Indian state violence and human rights abuses.
Speak out against this perpetuation of minority oppression in India. In the past, India benefited from media and power blackouts that hid the reality of their human rights violations. The internet can now challenge that darkness. Speaking openly about cases like these sheds light upon decades of stories that the Indian government attempted to hide.
Reblog this post, whether or not you are Sikh, and make your own posts with the hashtag #FreeJaggiNow. Your silence in this case will be violence.
"There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest." -Elie Wiesel

Amid death penalty fears, calls grow to free Briton held in India | Human Rights News
Jagtar Singh Johal, from Scotland, has been held in India since being arrested in November 2017.
Human rights organisations in the United Kingdom are urging India to free a Scottish man who has been held without trial for more than three years, as fears grow that he could ultimately face the death penalty.
Jagtar Singh Johal, from Dumbarton in Scotland, has been held in India since his arrest in Punjab in November 2017, after travelling to the northern region for his wedding.
He is currently being held at the high-security Tihar Jail, in the capital, New Delhi.
Indian authorities accuse Johal, who is of Sikh background, of being involved in a series of killings of Hindu leaders in Punjab, a Sikh-majority region.
Johal, 33, has denied the accusations.
Reprieve, a group that campaigns against the death penalty, on Wednesday called on the UK government to seek Johal’s release, warning if convicted, some of the charges could see him face execution.
Reprieve said it was concerned that the risk of Johal being sentenced to death “is high given the politicised nature of this case” and the “current political climate” in India, which is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist government.
Executions are rare in India, but four men were hanged at New Delhi’s Tihar jail in March last year after being found guilty in an infamous case, of raping and murdering a woman on a bus in the capital in 2012.
Reprieve said it had written a joint letter with the human rights charity Redress and Free Jaggi Now campaign to UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab over Johal’s case.
“We are talking about a young British man facing a death sentence on trumped-up political charges,” said Dan Dolan, the charity’s deputy director.
Dolan added it was “just not good enough” for the UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to make “generic requests” for due process.
“Action from the British Government could save Jagtar’s life and bring him home to his family,” he said. “Why won’t they call for his release?”
Allegations of torture
Court documents concerning Johal’s case show authorities claim he was a member of the Khalistan Liberation Front (KLF), an organisation described in the charge sheets against him as an international “terrorist gang”, the BBC reported on Wednesday.
But Johal told the BBC via his lawyer that he had been “falsely implicated” by Indian authorities and said he was physically tortured into signing a blank confession.
“They made me sign blank pieces of paper and asked me to say certain lines in front of a camera under fear of extreme torture,” he said via his lawyer.
Al Jazeera was unable to independently verify the allegations of torture, which Indian authorities have denied, telling the BBC there was “no evidence of mistreatment or torture as alleged”.
In response to Al Jazeera’s request for comment, the FCDO said Raab had raised Johal’s case with his Indian counterpart during a visit to India last month.
“We have consistently raised concerns about his case with the government of India, including allegations of torture and mistreatment and his right to a fair trial,” an FCDO spokesperson said in a statement.
“We will continue to raise our concerns directly with the government of India, including the need for an investigation into the allegations of torture.”
At the time of publication, the Indian embassy in the UK had not responded to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.

doesn't it scare you what happened to jaggi it could happen to you?
What happened to Jaggi could happen to me or to anyone that speaks freely about the human rights abuses and the culture of impunity that exists in India on and offline. What happened to Jagtar Singh Johal is one in a line of many illegal arrests and detainments. Since it’s birth as a so-called ‘democracy’ in 1947, Sikh activists have bore the brunt of the culture of impunity that exists in India. The horrors of the 70’s, 80’a and 90’s went away, the Indian state just became cleverer and more sneaky with how they implement their campaigns of torture, murder, rape, intimidation and harassment. There’s so much more I could say but all in all, it’s appalling what Jagtar is going through but this is even more reason to show the world what the Indian state is really like.

Johal’s wife urges UK Government minister to help end ‘darkness’
THE wife of detained Scot Jagtar Singh Johal has begged a UK Government minister to help her family out of the “darkness” of his Indian jail ordeal in a virtual meeting.
The Dumbarton man, a Sikh blogger known to supporters as Jaggi, has now been held by Indian authorities for 970 days over alleged involvement in the killings of right-wing Hindu leaders and the funding of a now-proscribed group.

The lack of global outrage at the illegal detainment and torture of Jagtar (Jaggi) Singh Johal just goes to show that- apart from awesome allies ❤- only Sikhs will truly give a shit about Sikhs.
No one else gives two shits about us or our plight.
