PUNJAB POLICE HAVE ABDUCTED A BRITISH SIKH ACTIVIST

Scottish Sikh Jagtar (Jaggi) Singh Johal has been illegally abducted and detained in India without cause or access to legal representation since November 4, 2017. Today, he was presented in court and his legal council confirmed that he has been physically tortured. Jaggi was in Punjab for his wedding, and shortly after, police came in plain clothes and forcibly hooded him from behind and took him away in an unmarked vehicle to an undisclosed location.

The British High Commission failed to secure his release and he has been remanded until November 17th. His legal team has confirmed that he has been tortured and Jaspal Singh Manjhpur described the torture in a SikhSiyasat article: "Jaggi told me that he was tortured physically and mentally as his legs were forcibly stretched beyond limits and he was given electric shots on nipples, ears and genitals."

This is not something new, but a continuation of the history of abduction, torture, and disappearance of Sikh youth in India. There is a precedence of impunity and extra-judicial murder that has taken thousands of lives.

Jaswant Singh Khalra was a Human Rights advocate who exposed these crimes in the 80s & 90s, toured parliaments around the world and then returned to India where he was abducted, tortured and extra-judicially murdered by Indian officials in 1995. Twenty-two years after the illegal abduction and murder of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, Jagtar Singh Johal has been abducted and tortured for exposing Indian state violence and human rights abuses.

Speak out against this perpetuation of minority oppression in India. In the past, India benefited from media and power blackouts that hid the reality of their human rights violations. The internet can now challenge that darkness. Speaking openly about cases like these sheds light upon decades of stories that the Indian government attempted to hide.

Jagtar Singh Johal ran the website neverforget84.com which documented human rights violations and the oppression of Sikhs by India.

He is a British citizen. His activism was done online. India is saying that if you are too outspoken on the internet, you cannot come home.

It has been confirmed he was tortured. His request for a medical examination was denied. He has been charged with 8 murders, 7 of which he was not in India when they occurred (his family has his passport and can prove it), the 8th he was surrounded by witnesses.

Many times Sikh activists disappear and we find their dead bodies. Jagtar Singh is still alive. That is why it is so important to get the word out and put pressure on politicians, human rights organizations and India to release him.

No petitions have been endorsed by the family of Jagtar Singh Johal. They have also said that as of now (19/11/2017), they do not need money. Any fundraisers you currently see are fake.

Jagtar Singh Johal is still alive. We want to get him out before he’s killed, we’ve never heard of a Sikh activist being arrested before they’re murdered, we only find out what happened after their body is found. We know India has a history of torturing Sikhs, then murdering them, and covering up the details of their deaths. WE DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO JAGTAR SINGH JOHAL.

Punjab police has allegedly begun trying to quell anyone who raises their voice against the illegal detaining and torture of Jagtar Singh Johal by arresting them.

Kudos to Scottish National Party MP Martin Docherty for taking action on behalf of his constituent Jagtar Singh Johal, who has been illegally and unjustly detained in Punjab. 

 Non-Sikh allies, we need you to step up and speak out.

Shoutout to people who became famous off of the support of the Punjabi Sikh community, but today seem to have completely distanced themselves from the community and are silent about the persecution and torture of Jagtar Singh Johal....

I've been hiding what's happening to Jaggi from my mom in fear of triggering the trauma she's been through. She just found out and burst into tears. She's shaking and begging me to stop posting things online.

My heart goes out to all the people who have PTSD from the Sikh genocide and are going through a very tough time rn.
