The laugh that ensues after Jaemin’s seemingly empty confession confuses you. You find it odd that the members don’t seem to take him seriously even as he stares blankly at the fire in front of all of you. You can’t help but think that maybe you don’t know him as well as you think you. That maybe just because you were dating, the relationship was no different than the ones he has with the rest of the members.

You chose to listen in more rather than participate, lost in your thoughts as you sat with your knees pressed against your chest. Being the new member in the Dream unit specifically always made you feel a little insecure. Sure you had been a trainee with them and debuted under Nct U early on—but they had a different bond with each other. They spoke to each other comfortably—confessing their love left and right.

This kept you up at night.

You sat outside alone now. The fire long gone and chairs that were once full with people and blankets sat empty. You couldn’t help but stare up at the bright moon, going through the events that occurred. You definitely could’ve opened up a little.

With a small scoff and a cold puff of air, you push yourself off the chair, trying to get inside as fast as you could.

“(Y/n).” As you as you turned to walk in, there he was. Jaemin’s exposed skin was illuminated by the moonlight. Almost as if he were glowing underneath all the layers of clothes he had on. He rubbed his eyes, hopping to take away some of the drowsiness that came with them. “Why are you still outside?”

“I—” Jaemin pulls you in to the house by your (f/c) hoodie, not waiting for an answer. Goosebumps run over your whole body, a sudden warmth about him overwhelming you. “I couldn’t sleep. I keep thinking about what you said.” You realize he’s leading you to the bunk bed he shares with Jisung.

Carefully climbing the ladder behind him, you get rid of one of the layers you have on—scared of overheating in the middle of the night.

“I want to understand you, Jaem. I don’t care how difficult you think it is.” You find yourself face to face with Jaemin. He managed to snake an arm under your waist, legs tangled with yours underneath the thick white blanket. “You deserve to be understood and loved—regardless of how hard you think that it. It comes so easy to me to love you.”

Jaemin’s eyes flutter close, his eyelashes casting shadows on the apples of his cheek. “I wish you would’ve said more, (y/n/n). I’m sure the members try hard to understand you and our relationship.” He turns his head to face the ceiling—eyes still closed and body still facing yours. “I’m sure you’re feeling a little left out from the group, but I promise everyone is trying their hardest to have you included. Even if you don’t see it.” He turns towards you again, offering a lazy smile before continuing.

“And I know you have something to say about how they reacted to what I said—and while I was serious, it was also just a silly joke. It was meant to be lighthearted. I promise.” You scanned his face with your eyes, a little sad he was the one to comfort you this late at night after all that he done. But now you were feeling more secure and affirmed.

“I’m sure you’re tired after all that grilling.” He offered a small noise as a response, pulling you closer to him. He tucked your head under his, cradling it. “Thank you for the food, baby.”

You had gone out to get some snacks for your boyfriend and his group members. Meanwhile, the guys took some time for a break from their rigorous dance practice.

Earlier you had come over to visit, which Jisung greatly appreciated. He loved any opportunity to impress you with his dance skills.

“How long have you and (Y/n) been together now?” Chenle asked the younger beside him.

Jisung tried to restrain the bout of glee when her name was brought up. “Almost a year now.”

“Wah, your whole face lit up when we mentioned her,” Jeno chuckled. The others made sounds of awe. The maknae’s cheeks had become a light shade of red as he shrugged.

Mark leaned forward. “But seriously, Jisung-ah. You seem happy with (Y/n).”

“I am,” Jisung said truthfully. “She’s...amazing.”

He thought of how supportive you were of his career and how you took the time out of your day to ensure he was taking care of himself. How you were always by his side to reassure him when he wasn’t feeling his best. How you reserved a loving smile, only for him.

“Whenever I think about her, there are so many things I feel,” Jisung exhaled. “Sometimes I feel like she deserves someone better than me.”

Haechan put a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “What do you mean?”

“(Y/n) struggles on her own, a lot. But she never says anything because she doesn’t want to bother me.” Jisung’s hands began to tremble. “I’m such an incompetent boyfriend.”

The others quickly caught on to the younger’s voice wavering as he said this. Jisung hadn’t realized he had gotten so caught up in his emotions.

“I’m sure (Y/n) doesn’t think that at all, Jisung-ah,” Jaemin cooed. He patted the maknae on the back.

A few moments later, you reentered the room only to see your boyfriend in tears. Your hands tightened around the grocery bags as a slight panic filled you. Immediately, you were confused as to what you had missed. Nonetheless, you put down the grocery bags and rushed to Jisung’s side.

“What’s wrong?” You asked, kneeling beside him. “Did something happen?”

Your eyes darted to the other boys in the room. They had all taken a step back for you to handle the boy.

“Nothing bad,” Renjun spoke up. “We’ll let Jisung talk.”

Jisung then squeezed you into a hug, catching you off guard. He rarely showed affection in front of his members.

“I’m sorry, (Y/n)-ah.” His apology puzzled you. “For not being there for you enough, and leaving you alone all the time.”

Hearing the second half of his sentence, turned a switch on in your brain. Then you were holding back tears. You didn’t want to cry in front of the guys. Especially when your boyfriend was already upset.

Your fingers clenched onto his hoodie, as you hugged him with an equal amount of effort. Possibly more. Softly, you murmured, “Knowing that I have you no matter what is all I need. I’m sorry for not showing that enough, Jisung-i.”

Jisung pulled away with slightly puffy eyes. Regardless, you and his members thought he looked cute even then.

“I just…I just love you so much.” He sniffed, accepting the tissues Jaemin gave him.

In return, you smiled sadly and whispered that you loved him too. A chorus of “awes” and “cute!” filled the room. You didn’t expect to experience such a serious moment with Jisung in front of the Dreamies. But they were very understanding and supportive. In short, they were grateful to witness their youngest member be in a loving relationship.

NCT 127 went to France in 2019, just a little over a year after JiHo’s debut. However, the confidence she exuded during their short stay came to a bit of a surprise to the boys. Especially when JiHo spoke to one of the waiters at a restaurant to complain about them giving Jungwoo the wrong dish. Despite not understanding a word of what JiHo was saying and being a bit anxious about the back and forth between her and the waiter, the boys were deeply impressed by their youngest member. Jungwoo would even say he was a bit swooned by JiHo’s impressive gesture and would bring it up for quite a while after the fact. He’d also call JiHo “noona” jokingly, saying that he felt well taken care of by her.

Ten, Chenle, Yangyang, Johnny and Jaehyun’s favourite thing is when JiHo gets annoyed — at something really trivial — and starts mumbling under her breath in French. Or whenever someone says or does something “dumb” and she speaks on it sarcastically in her mother-tongue. They most definitely have multiple videos of JiHo cursing in French or just exclaiming in annoyance and it’s both a serotonin boost as well as a way to tease JiHo. Chenle and Yangyang (and sometimes Johnny) would sometimes purposely annoy JiHo in a game by playing badly or getting in her way so that she would get annoyed and yell at them in French. They never take it to heart though and it’s very hard for them to even get JiHo that upset or annoyed, but whenever it happens it does entertain them quite a lot.

Poor Kun, Jaemin and Taeyong have all been the receiver of JiHo’s nonsensical French rants. It happened when JiHo had a particularly tiring day, where everything seemed to go wrong. She’d come to the boys for comfort — or they just happened to be there — and JiHo started to rant about her stressful day, not realising she was talking in French. Even when the boys stared at her wide-eyed and confused as she asked for confirmation over her feelings multiple times — again in French. It’s only when she finished her rant and the boys told her they had absolutely no clue what she just told them, but hoped that her clearing her heart helped her, that JiHo would pout at them dramatically. She’d sigh, but thank them for listening to her regardless, promising she’d buy them their favourite drink or snack later.

Haechan and Renjun have absolutely NO clue what JiHo’s talking about with her friends on facetime as they sit in silence in a corner in her room. JiHo has told them multiple times that they shouldn’t come over during the hours she would talk to her friends and family, because she knew the boys wouldn’t be able to join the conversation and would feel left out. But what she didn’t know was that both Renjun and Haechan just enjoyed the sound of her voice when she spoke in French. Her voice sounds more soft and is lower than when she speaks Korean, and it’s the perfect sound to use as background noise while scrolling through social media, or playing a video game (in Haechan’s case). When JiHo realised they still came over after countless warnings, she started mentioning their names during conversation just to tease them. At first they would whine and ask her what she was saying about them, but soon they’d realise it was just to get under their skin and would start to ignore it.

Yuta is an absolute menace. Every interview or schedule they have, whenever the opportunity arises (or even when it doesn’t); Yuta will find a way to have JiHo speak in French. More than loving it himself, he knows that the fans absolutely go nuts when JiHo speaks in French, so he tries to get her to say something.

Jisung, Xiaojun, Shotaro and Hendery are always genuinely in awe when those very foreign words leave her lips. They’d ask JiHo to say certain things in French. It’s not because they feel a particular way about the language, or that they want to learn something new, but they are just amazed by how effortlessly the sounds flow out of her mouth. In a way it sounds very romantic and soft in contrast to her speaking in asian languages. They just like the sound of it a lot.

Thank God for these sweethearts though. Sungchan, Mark and Winwin think it’s impressive when JiHo speaks French (despite it literally being her first language) but they actually love learning things from her. Sungchan in particular loves learning different sentences or things about French culture from JiHo. Mark would every once in a while ask what a certain word is in French. For example when they are eating something he’d ask what it is in French and then repeat the same word at least a hundred times that day. As for Winwin, his curiosity isn’t long term. He’ll forget the word or sentence JiHo taught him after a couple hours, but he still likes learning the most random things because it’s a fun activity between him and the girl.

Jeno feels his cheeks heat up and his famous eye smile appears whenever JiHo says something in French to him. He had picked up on certain words JiHo told him over and over again and looked up the meaning of them. When he did he was surprised when the words were mostly compliments. Of course JiHo does this on purpose to get Jeno flustered, but that doesn’t mean her words aren’t genuine. Despite the boy getting visually flustered, he now prefers JiHo complimenting him in French because the other boys don’t know what she’s telling him. Only he knows (.◜◡◝)

Doyoung was the first to hear JiHo speak French out of all the boys and it wasn’t as pretty and magical as fans make it out to be today. It happened a few months after she arrived at SM and she got a call from her parents saying they wouldn’t be visiting her for her birthday. It was a pretty emotional ordeal and it broke Doyoung’s heart to hear JiHo’s voice crack as she argued with her mother. He couldn’t understand most of what she was saying, but it was clear in her body language and the way she sounded that she wasn’t happy — the few Korean words she exchanged with her mother were enough for Doyoung to figure out the big picture. He never told JiHo that he heard her that day, and also never told her that that was the day Doyoung decided he wanted to be like an older brother to her. Like a second family, but closer to her. So now, every time JiHo speaks French, even if it sounds cool, he can’t help but be reminded of that phone call.

Mark would find out when the two of you went to dinner and ordered an alcoholic beverage.

He noticed you got a soda and he asked why you didn't want to try the wine the restaurant was famous for.

When you told him you were underaged he'd be like.

"Wait what? Hold up. I thought you were like older than me."

He'd be pretty surprised by it considering you two had been friends for a while and been going out for a few months, but he'd never really thought to ask you your age.

When you told him you were only a year younger he'd be relieved and be like "good, I thought you were going to say you were Jisung's age and then I would have just seen you as a baby."

Renjun

Renjun would be a little surprised, only because he had sworn he had asked you how old you were before and he swore you had said you were two years older, not two years younger.

Not that an age difference of a few years older or younger really bothers him, he's just really surprised.

Especially because you seem a lot more mature than him, are extremely composed, and seem like you really have your life together.

He would find out because the two of you were talking about random skills you want to learn before you're thirty.

When you told him you wanted to learn to play violin and the average amount of time it takes to become good at it, then said how many years you had left to learn it he'd be like "I thought you were older than me."

When you told him the year you were born he would be surprised and just tell you he thought you were older but that it doesn't matter and he likes you just the same.

Jeno

Jeno would be pretty surprised seeing how he's already told a lot of his friends that he's dating an older woman (I really see him being into older women).

When he found out you were younger he would stare at you with his mouth open all dramatic.

When you ask him what's wrong and that you thought he knew, he'd be like "I thought you said you were three years younger than me, not three months."

He would then go from being surprised to teasing you talking about how you're a baby.

He would instantly be like "call me Oppa."

He would use a lot of those "Back when I was your age" jokes.

He would buy EVERYTHING for you and be like "no, I'm older so it's my responsibility."

It would get a little annoying, but that's the point.

He would eventually stop being sooooo annoying about it, but he would still remind you every so often.

Haechan

He would be the MOST ANNOYING PERSON IN THE WORLD ABOUT IT.

Like Jeno, he would be like "I guess you have to call me Oppa now."

He would also make jokes saying "back when I was your age."

Or if you ever messed something up he'd be like "it's ok, it's because you're still a kid."

He would act like this when you're literally only like two days younger than him. Hell he'd do it if it was even two minutes or two seconds younger than him.

He'd always be like "Don't worry, I'll show you how to do this."

But you know he's just teasing you and he actually doesn't see you this way.

Jaemin

Jaemin would be pleasantly surprised.

He's honestly one of the only members who just sort of forgot to ask you how old you were when you first started dating and never did.

So he'd find out by surprise on your birthday and he wouldn't even tell you he didn't know how old you were.

But you would notice a change.

He would start to take care of you more and baby you a little bit more.

He'd ask if you needed help with simple adulting tasks more than he had in the past. When you connect the dots you get a little irritated at him behaving this way and decide to confront him on it.

He tells you that he would treat you like that regardless, and this being Jaemin I really wouldn't be surprised if he acted this way regardless of age as he got more comfortable around you.

If it really bothered you, he would stop. But he tells you that he just wants to take care of you and he doesn't care if you're younger or older.

He'd probably say something like "even if you were a 1,000 year old vampire, I would still want to be with you."

Chenle

Chenle would also be pleasantly surprised by this.

The entire time you two had been friends he had assumed you were older than him because you were a lot more mature.

When you started going out, it honestly made him feel pretty insecure because he felt like he could be really childish at times.

He would try to change to act more mature so he could be on your level, but when he found out you were younger than him, he let his true playful self show.

You would be a little surprised as your entire friendship he seemed a bit more laidback, but it wasn't really a problem for you.

You actually like him a lot better when he's being himself and not so focused on impressing you.

Jisung

Jisung I think would be the most surprised to find out you were the same age as him.

He always thought you were so mature and poised and on a completely different level than you.

That's why he was surprised when you said something about finally being able to buy tickets to see rated R movies when you two went to the theater together.

He asked why it was finally that and that he thought you'd seen them before.

You confess you had, but you always got your older friends to buy your tickets.

He would be pretty relieved to find out you two were the same age.

Though he never felt he had to put in more effort to come across as more mature, his relief comes from the fact that he was worried you may want to go out and buy alcohol or something else that isn't legal (assuming this takes place in a country where the legal drinking age is over 20/21).

Overall, I think he'd see it as a really good thing that you two are the same age as you're entering your adult life. That way you two could do anything you wanted together without worrying about any laws.

⊰⊹ DURING: Jaemin will also give one of the funniest vows but it's because he's unintentionally funny in his speech delivery. He will say the sweetest and uplifting words, refraining from being too emotional because he doesn't want to see you cry... but you still do. Dude might do mild aegyo in front of everyone just to see you smile again (you know the finger on pouty lips one that he does with Renjun? Yep, that one).

Another for a small circle wedding (just family and friends). The last will be the “just the two of us casually exchanging chips and diamond rings while playing pubg” wedding

⊰⊹ DURING: Dude will 100% get clowned by the NCT members while saying his vows (honorable mention: dreamies). He might rap some of his words out of nervousness (which everyone finds cute because it is). He will be all shy and awkward at first and then surprise everyone by his sudden bold moves (e.g. dip you as he kisses you, say the sweetest things). He will also cry happy tears as he sees you walk down that aisle.

[You chased Seonghwa out. Great.] It was awkward, and it was your fault. God, you hated this, all of it. You wished you could take everything back but, for whatever reason, your heart still raced. And you didn't know if it was out of pure anger or out of heartbreak, both of which you were responsible for but too stubborn to admit out loud. You just couldn't believe he had the audacity to just barge in, like you didn't have a pride of your own. Not to mention the scene it made, god, that's the most embarrassing part. You'd just finished apologizing to everyone for the noise, especially Doyoung who looked the most irked. You'll never forget it.

"We never had a problem with you dating, despite the horrors it did to our image. But you do not drag anyone else into it."

You never knew that was how Doyoung viewed it.

Taeyong apologized for him, saying that he was just tired, but tired minds tell the truth, or so you always thought. Though, he didn't have to be so harsh about it. You understood where he was coming from, regardless, and you couldn't fault him for it. You felt like you'd be pretty annoyed yourself if any of the other members brought drama to the dorms, the one place everyone was supposed to be relaxed. No wonder he was so shocked when Seonghwa knocked on the door for the first time, but it's not like you were the first to bring their significant other to the dorms, there has been many a time Taeyong, Johnny, or Yuta brought someone over with them, granted, they were never the same people each time, but still. You'd say it was unfair, but you knew the truth.

You sighed as you slid the Jenga block out of its place, the tower wobbling only slightly while you placed it on top of the tower. Stop thinking about it, it's not entirely your fault.

"Dang, (Y/N), how are you so good at Jenga?" Mark gasps, struggling a little to remove his chosen block. You could tell he was just trying to alleviate the mood, one you set, great. You felt horrible for making everything so awkward. Every single person who has walked through since the whole event has caught onto the mood rather quickly and, yes, that includes the resident "happy machine" Chenle. If it wasn't for Yangyang suddenly slamming Jenga on the table, you would've locked yourself in your room to deal with this all on your own. "You've got steady hands," Mark speaks again, holding his hands to his face and watching them tremble, probably from lack of sleep combined with caffeine.

"Just practice, I guess," you shrugged, it was all you could get out before your voice started wavering, "I like doing things that require careful handiwork," you muttered. It was true, oftentimes Saeron would invite you to do crafts with her and, hey, they were a great way to relax. You glanced over at Yangyang, who was seated across from you. He was studying the tower carefully as he made his choice. He takes the safer one and removes a side block. "Since when have we had Jenga anyway?"

"I think Hendery bought it a while ago," Yangyang hums. He looks off toward the door, which was locked tight. You reached for another block that was slightly sticking out, result of Mark's intersting choice of block to remove.

"Hey, uh... you doing okay, (Y/N)?" Mark finally asks. You could tell he genuinely cared, well, of course he did, it's Mark you're talking about. Maybe it was because of your slight tear-stained cheeks and mussed hair, but it was mostly because you were so close. Or at least, you'd like to think so.

"Hm? Yeah... I'm alright," you said as you successfully removed the block, this time with some difficulty. "Why?"

"I mean... you know... your boyfriend-"

"Ex," Jaemin corrected Mark from his spot in the kitchen. You whipped your head back, shooting him a glare, but he just returned you in kind, except with a quirked brow and a knowing look. You just rolled your eyes and returned to your conversation.

"Sorry, ex-boyfriend just came in here and, you know, tried to fix everything but ended up kind of making everything worse and rubbing it in and really just sounded like he was making excuses, but that's just my opinion, but at the same time-"

"Mark, please drop it and grab a block already," you rested your chin on the edge of the coffee table while you shook your head. You didn't want to think about it.

"Oh... sorry," Mark averted his eyes for a moment and cleared his throat. He took a block and carefully placed it on top. "I just-"

"Mark, I'm fine," you cut him off again. You didn't want to talk about it. Seonghwa had to have some audacity just marching in here like he was still in your life after that stunt. You didn't want to even see him right now or else you'd just blow up and start spilling out all the shit you'd been feeling since he'd broken up with you. You didn't want to hear his excuses. He broke up with you first. He lied to you first. What he did now didn't concern you.

It did, though. Because it's on you to reciprocate. Just, you couldn't do that right now. You just finished NCT U promotions, you're finishing up NCThree prep, right after and overlapping slightly is NCT ANiMA prep for the group's first full album, there's just too much going on right now, and as much as you hated to admit it, the relationship had to wait, any kind of relationship had to wait. It had to wait until you were done with everything so you could focus on it. That wasn't you being rude, or petty, or anything. It was you being realistic. You didn't even have time for yourself at this moment, when was the last time you relaxed and did something for yourself?

Maybe this was worse though, shouldn't you be prioritizing your relationship over work?

This sucks.

"(Y/N)?" Yangyang spoke up this time.

"Yeah?"

"It's your turn," he says.

"Oh, yeah, sorry about that," you sighed again and picked out a block. As soon as you touched it, however, the tower came toppling down. "Oh no... it toppled over... like my relationship," you slammed your head against the coffee table and groaned. "This sucks! God, I feel horrible, how could I have said those things to him? He just wanted to explain what happened that night and I told him to leave... isn't that what I wanted in the first place? Why'd I chase him out like that?" Your voice was muffled by your hands.

"So you're not fine," Mark mutters.

"Mark!" Yangyang gasps. "In your defense, (Y/N), you're allowed to be upset, you know? Don't be so harsh on yourself."

"I'm such a horrible girlfriend, he must feel terrible," you cried.

"Uh, no, you're not a horrible girlfriend," Mark almost sounded offended. "(Y/N) you used to bundle up in the hottest summer days just to visit him and bring him and his friends ice cream. Not just anyone does that!" Mark says and hands you a tissue. "You'd literally rush out of practice to go meet him, (Y/N), don't put yourself down. You did great, anyone who knows you knows that. It's just him being shitty and keeping you out of the loop for so long with no actual reason," Mark speaks up, he wasn't the kind to get heated like this.

"Plus, if you were a shitty girlfriend," Jaemin takes a seat and places a glass of water by you, pushing it in your direction. "This guy here wouldn't have been so head over heels for you," he says nonchalantly. Yangyang clears his throat and looks away. "I'm pretty sure he knows you better than anyone else will, I'm surprised you're still friends."

"It's more like a hostage situation," Yangyang teases.

"You've got a point there, Jaemin. And, to be fair, it's a double hostage situation. We have too much shit on each other to stop being friends," you sighed into your hands. "Still, everything just feels... kinda lame, you know? Like I don't want to do anything..."

"Hey, (Y/N)," Yangyang starts setting up the Jenga tower again.

"What?"

"Why isn't a koala considered a bear?" You looked up from your hands, your face scrunched with confusion. Where did that come from?

"Why?"

"They don't meet the koalafications." You stared at each other for a moment before processing what he just said. A small smile rose on your face and you snickered quietly.

"No way," Jaemin's jaw drops. "(Y/N), you really are a lost hope."

"What did the police officer say to the button?" Yangyang continues despite Jaemin's comments.

"Oh god, what?" You were almost afraid to find out.

"You're under a vest." You didn't know what it was, your tired brain, Yangyang's straightlaced expression, or the mess of emotions you were going through right now, but somehow for some reason you found it funny.

"Stop, they're not even that funny!" Still you couldn't help the ridiculous grin on your face, something that Mark and Jaemin were astounded by. Mark in shock and Jaemin in denial.

"Why did the bike fall over?"

"... why?"

"It was two tired."

"Oh my god," you wiped the tears out of your face.

"Why are you still crying?" Mark handed you the whole box now.

"The jokes are just so bad," you hiccuped.

"Wait, I have one more," Yangyang leaned back on his palms. "Why did the man get attacked by a bike every day?"

"Why?"

"He was stuck in a vicious cycle." The sound of someone laughing behind them caught everyone's attention and you spotted Jeno holding bags of McDonald's.

"That was good one," he laughs and places the paper bags on the table. "Anyway, I got everyone chicken nuggets so eat up."

"Why McDonald's?" Jaemin inquired, grabbing a box anyway.

"It's like (Y/N)'s favorite comfort food."

"McComfort Food," you mumbled, a small chuckle rising from your mouth.

"Mc what?" Jaemin remarks.

"You wouldn't understand," you just shook your head. You looked over at your phone. Seonghwa's number was still blocked, something you had reluctantly decided to do after more than a week of him ghosting you. If he didn't want to talk to you then you shouldn't want to talk to him, right? "Jeno, pass me a McNapkin, please." You held your hand out and Mark almost choked on his food.

"Damn, you're really crazy about this guy, huh?" Jaemin points at you with a nugget.

"I should go to him," you sighed. A chorus of "No!"s chimed around you and you looked around surprised. "Why not?"

"(Y/N), no offense, but what he did was so shitty, like, literally, he kept you in the dark for so long and now he expects you to just forget about it? You deserve better," Mark says. He had a point, and you thought so too.

"I think I should at least hear him out..."

"Maybe not right now," Jaemin sighs. "Wait for a bit, just till the tensions go down. One of you might make things worse."

"You're right," you shook your head. "Let's just go back to Jenga, yeah?"

"(Y/N)?" Saeron stuck her head out of the ANiMA side.

"Yeah?"

"Is everything alright? Hongjoong called-"

"Everything's fine!" The other boys answered. Saeron narrowed her gaze, but slipped back in, phone pressed against her ear. You could just barely make out a 'Yeah, no, she isn't fine. How's Seonghwa?' You sighed again.

"Hey, why don't we go out on a date?" Jeno offers.

"No," Jaemin shakes his head. "Why would you do that?"

"Okay, ouch," you sat up, pulling a block from the tower and making a move to toss it at him before Jaemin holds his hand out.

"You just broke up with Park Seonghwa of ATEEZ, imagine what people would do if they saw you with Lee Jeno from NCT Dream," Jaemin rationalizes, picking out a block and ignoring Mark's expression.

"It was my turn..." Mark mutters. As he makes a move to grab a block, Jeno reaches for one instead and Mark just folds his arms.

"Yeah, you've got a point," Jeno frowns. "Just wanted to help you feel better, (Y/N)," Jeno nudges your leg with his. "Hey, let's all go out then. Let's bring Yeseul so it's not sketchy. (Y/N), we can do that one thing you've been wanting to do!" Jeno adds with a smile.

"Shopping?" Mark asks.

"Pottery?" Yangyang adds next.

"Axe throwing," you and Jeno answer. Mark's expression immediately drops just as fast as Yangyang's jaw.

"Oh you are so on!" You grinned.

"There we go! That's the spirit!" Jeno stands up and pulls you with him. "Let's get ready, I'll call ahead of time, Jaemin, you coming?"

"To make sure neither of you bust your heads, yeah," Jaemin gets up slowly.

"Hey, wait for us!" Mark scrambles up. "Yang, come on," he urges. "We can just watch, or something..."

"Axe throwing, Jesus, how do they even come up with that?" Yangyang laughs pathetically. "One of us is going to end up in a hospital, huh?"

"I'll make sure it's none of you two, don't worry," you waved your hand, rushing to get ready.

The two of you were always too busy to see each other during the week. From college classes to football practice, Jaemin could barely squeeze in time for you. Rare moments like today, however, were when you could spend some quality alone time with him, away from friends and college lectures. Dropping her body on the ground, Bee took a deep breath as someone called the end of the day, some of the boys moving around her to grab water bottles and get their stuff ready for them to leave.

Quickly raising her upper body off the floor, the girl looked around for their dance teacher, checking to see if he had left the room already.

“Yun-hee, you wanted to show me something right?” He asked without taking his eyes off of his phone, slightly making her creeped out and wondering if he had a sixth sense. Humming in agreement, Bee got up and ran towards her bag.

“Oh, you’re showing us something?” Jisung asked closing his bottle and sitting in front of the big mirror, getting followed by Chenle and Jaemin who did the same.

“No, you can leave,” She said unblocking her phone and getting weird looks from the members. Walking to the sound station, the girl pouted at them still in the same spots “What are you doing?”

“What are you doing?” Renjun asked back judging her with his eyes “Why didn’t you told us you were doing a solo project”

“Because I’m not” Bee giggled at his face “It’s just a dumb thing I choreographed last night and I wanted to show it to a professional”

Pressing play on the edited version of the song, Bee moved to the middle of the room and counted until the moment she had begun choreographing. 

She had messed around and freestyled many many times before, but it was never something she thought was worth memorizing or even putting much effort into. Until the past days, when she arrived at home and listened to random songs by herself, inevitably getting the feeling of wanting to dance just a little more aware of what she was doing.

Seeing the moves she had worked on in a mirrored wall gave her a complete look at what she had only seen on the small one in her room, and the sound system managed to make the music seem more explosive than her earbuds could. The whole environment allowed her to make larger moves and be more expressive than she had been in her bedroom.

“That’s all” She clapped awkwardly when the end of the set came “I didn’t come up with something for the rest of the music, but I’m open for suggestion”

“It’s fine. When choreographing most people only do it for the whole song if they have to” He nodded walking closer to where she stood “And your piece looked good, can you do it again with only the count?”

Standing behind her to get a better view from the mirror, the teacher didn’t press play on the music, instead, doing an eight-count while pointing out small angles that needed to be adjusted here and there without actually changing what she had done. 

Once they had run over it twice, he walked back to the system and started the song again, this time Bee performed it in a more polished way, getting a satisfied smile from him. He noticed how the piece wasn’t extremely hard but at the same time had a pretty good amount of details that made it very intricate and demanded attention when learning it.

“You know, when you said you had something to show me, I thought it would be a contemporary piece” He nodded while turning off the computer “But seeing it now, you made something that fit you very well”

“Ah thank you” The girl smiled relieved and went to pick up her things, “I think I’ve been losing my contemporary background actually”

“That’s not true and I don’t think that’s possible either” He laughed at her “I can still see your training, but you have improved in looking more natural with hip hop based stuff as well. It helps that you’re still young”

“I guess I’ll try to stay on the contemporary hip hop lane then” She giggled, tossing her bag over her shoulder.

“Let me give you a tip actually. Don’t shy away from experimenting, if you listen to a song and you want to dance to it, do it regardless of the genre” The teacher said walking alongside her out of the room “But congratulations for your first piece, it definitely looks like something you would have done”

“Thank you so much,” Bee bowed to him and got surprised by a sudden question.

“So, what do you want to do with the choreography now?” He asked locking the door, suppressing a laugh at her confused face “Do you want to make a concept video? A normal cover? Arrange it with your manager and I’ll see what else we can do about it”

“Uh, I wasn’t thinking about doing anything with it actually” She fidgeted with the straps of her bag, “I think if the managers like the idea of a cover video, I can try to make something better”

You sit in your room, waiting for Hyuck to show up. Thanks to his quick thinking, it gave you both an excuse to hang out without Mark. The door suddenly burst open, Hyuck slinging his bag onto the floor.

“Hey,” he says, sitting next to you on your bed.

“Hey,” he says, sitting next to you on your bed.

“Hey,” you say, furrowing your brows. “How did you get in?”

“Your brother let me in,” he says. “Got here the same time as him, so…”

“Oh, right…” you sigh. “Anyways, I guess we have a lot to talk about.”

“Yeah.” Hyuck responds.

You nod slowly. Why was it so awkward? You’ve technically known Hyuck longer than you knew Mark. “It’s kinda funny we ended up in the same universe,” you chuckle. “What did you wish for anyways?”

“It’s not important,” Hyuck fires back.

You decide not to push him. You didn’t tell him what you wished for, so it’s not like he was obligated to tell you. “Oh... alright.” you look away from him.

“Listen, (y/n.)” you look back at him. His voice was stern, serious. It was a tone you barely ever heard from the happy-go-lucky Hyuck.

“What?” your voice is barely audible.

“We…” he sighs, shaking his head. “We aren’t supposed to be here.”

You stare ahead. “I know that. I know we both feel alienated here.”

“We have to leave.”

“What?” you look up at Hyuck and meet his eyes. He’s dead serious. “Why?”

“Because we aren’t supposed to be here.” he repeats, slowly enunciating each word. “We’re basically in a foreign country. We…” he pauses to collect his thoughts. “This just isn’t right.”

“Hyuck…” you say.

“I know you’re happier here. I can see it in your eyes. I can see it in the way you talk to Mark, I know.” he tells you. “But we have a life we need to continue. One that’s in the right timeline.”

“But…” you feel tears forming again. “We can’t go back.”

“Yes we can. There’s still a way to go back to our normal lives. That’s why the app refuses to get deleted.” Hyuck opens his phone. He enters the ButterFly app and goes to one of the sections within it. “As long as we leave before the one month mark of coming here, we can return back to our old lives. This is basically a free trial.”

You stare at Hyuck for a second before grabbing Hyuck’s phone from his hands and looking at the screen. There it was.

Not happy? No problem. We understand things can become overwhelming. If you feel like you’ve made a mistake. Simply text ButterFlyHQ “Reverse” to undo your wish within 30 days of the initial text.

Your face gets hot. You feel stupid for not looking there before you came here and becoming attached to your new life. “Okay. That’s how we get back, but…” you try to blink away your tears. It doesn’t work. “I don’t think I can…”

“But-”

“Hyuck, I can’t.” you repeat. You look back to him, tears falling down your cheeks. “All I wanted was to have Mark back… this stupid app wasn’t even supposed to work!” you cry out. “And now that I have him back… I can’t leave him. I don’t think I’d be able to live with myself knowing I had a chance to finally be happy and I chose not to.”

Hyuck flinches when you say that. “I understand. But there’s still a chance for happiness when you return back to normal, no?”

You pause, sniffling. He was right; there was always a chance to fix things. But why would you put yourself through the hardships of making things better when things were already better here?

“You don’t understand-“ you start.

“Yes I do.” Hyuck says. “Whatever you’re thinking, trust me, I understand.”

“No you don’t!” you stand up. “I was miserable back in my old life. Why would I want to go back?”

“Because I need you.” Hyuck responds, standing up as well. “I’m going back regardless, but how am I supposed to get things back to normal when I know that isn’t the real you?”

“So I have to sacrifice my happiness for the sake of you wanting to feel normal?” you snap.

“You know that’s not what I want.” Hyuck replies. “I did that exact thing for you. I know it sucks.” he admits.

It’s quiet for a moment. Hyuck turns his head away from you, shaking it before continuing.

“You know what I wished for? I wished for you to be happy.” he tells you. His words are almost venomous. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’m not doing great here. I just don’t feel like myself.” he sits back down, putting his head in his hands.

Guilt floods your entire body.

“I don’t know if it’s because everything here is so out of whack or if it’s because that’s just… how I am here. But I don’t like it.” he says. “I’m so used to taking care of you that now I don’t know what to do.”

You sit next to him on your bed.

“So that’s why I was happy, because you were happy. My wish came true. But… I can’t fathom having to stay here any longer. And I don’t wanna go back to a universe where both of my best friends are gone.” he says. His voice shakes.

“But…” you shift uncomfortably in your spot. “I’ll still be there…”

“I’ll know it’s not you, though.” his response is quiet. “Just… think about it, please?”

You stare ahead, unsure of what to say. You understood where Hyuck was coming from, but you couldn’t let go of what you had here so easily. Here, you had Mark. Your family situation was so much better. But no matter how hard you tried, you could never stop thinking about Jaemin. You missed him so much it brought you to tears sometimes. You loved him.

You clear your throat. “If we go back… will we remember any of this?”

Hyuck nods. “At first, yeah. But the memories will start to fade.”

You sigh. “Okay. I’ll think about it.” you tell Hyuck.

“Alright. I don’t mean to pressure you, but I’m planning on leaving on Sunday,” Hyuck stands up, picking up his bag off the floor.

It was Wednesday. That gave you 4 days. You nod.

Hyuck leaves your room, and a few moments later you hear the front door close. You don’t know what to think. The fact that you could leave changed everything. The only thing you hated was the fact that you would soon forget all your memories from this universe. Although, it would ultimately make leaving easier if you couldn’t imagine living in a world with Mark alive again.

And even though part of you was telling you it was a mistake, you got up, grabbed your wallet and left your house. You walked into town to look for a disposable camera, preferably a Polaroid camera that would instantly print them out. You had plenty of pictures of you and Mark as children and young teenagers, but in the past few years, he had matured. He looked more like a man than a child. It was something you wanted to remember. You also wanted a picture of Jisung — it would be much less inconspicuous than having a picture of older Mark. You just wanted to remember their smiling faces before returning back to a world where seeing them was rare.

After walking around for a bit, you found a store that had a polaroid camera along with some film. You examined it, looking at the price. Luckily, you were able to afford it thanks to the money you saved the other day by Mark offering to pay for your food. You start to walk away to pay for it when you hear voices behind you.

“Ah, there’s no pink one? Still?” a voice whines. It was familiar. You turn to look at them and see Jiwoo standing where you had stood a few moments ago. You looked down at the camera in your hands. It was pink. You hadn’t really paid attention to the color you grabbed.

You turn and walk to where Jiwoo stood. Two girls stood behind her. You recognized them, but only as girls you had seen around school a few times. “Um,” you say, trying to get her attention. “You can have mine.”

Jiwoo gasps, and you can’t help but smile at how animated she always is. You realize how much you miss her.

“Are you sure? If you want it, you can keep it! It’s okay…” she says, holding her hands up.

You chuckle. “I’m sure. It’s fine.” you hold out the camera towards her and she grabs it.

“Oh my god, thank you so much! We go to school together, right? I’ll have to pay you back in some way,” she rambles. The two girls behind her giggle.

“It’s okay.” you tell her. “You don’t have to pay me back.” you grab another camera, one that was white.

After a few minutes of convincing Jiwoo that she didn’t need to buy the camera for you, you bought it yourself and started heading home. When you get home, Jisung is in the kitchen eating a snack.

“What’s that?” he asks, walking over to you.

“A camera.” you unbox it. “Isn’t it cute?”

“Mmm,” Jisung is much more interested in his snack than your camera. You unbox the film as well and look at the instructions of how to put it in the camera. You pick it up and turn it towards Jisung. He just stares back at you.

Your shoulders drop. “Can you at least smile?”

Jisung rolls his eyes. “Why?”

“Because I need to see if it works and you’re the only person here!” you tell him. “Now smile!”

After another eye roll, he smiles. You snap the photo before he could do anything else. You set the picture down and wait for it to dry.

“There, look. It works” you hold the picture out to Jisung once it develops.

He cringes. “Why do I look like that?”

You shrug. “I don���t know. I think you look… fine.”

“Why’d you hesitate, you jerk?” he says, playfully hitting your arm.

You laugh. “I’m serious. You look fine.”

Jisung shakes his head and laughs. “Why’d you buy that anyways? Can’t you just use your phone for photos?”

“Yeah,” you reply. “But having a physical copy of a nice picture feels more important, I think.” You knew your reason for buying the camera went much deeper, but you obviously couldn’t tell Jisung why.

He shrugs. “I guess so.”

You look at the picture again. It seemed like a perfectly normal picture now, but you knew that soon, it would be one of the few things that reminded you of your time in this universe. Even looking at the photo of Jisung made your heart hurt a bit. You couldn’t even begin to imagine the pain that would come with Mark’s photos.
