#Jack the Farm Boy

Hi! Not gonna lie, my brain has been in a bit of a life-induced shutdown for the past little while. I only just thought to myself, gee, maybe I should update that one poll.

I loved reading about everyone’s thoughts and theories on this, ranging from “how would an approval rating be measured in this Clearly Very Serious fantasy world?” to “Why would Ignacio be able to drink alcohol?? Dragon fire + booze = a bad time for protag.”

It was so nice to have someone else’s feedback on this little project, and I love each and every one on you for this. Some of your responses made me look closer into the themes of friendship and family in my story, and I’ve been brainstorming more with Iggy than I have in a while. I also had to sit down for a while and come to terms with the fact that while our reluctant dragon slayer doesn’t love the nickname Iggy, he vastly prefers it to Nacho, which was the only other option. I could type his full name out each time, but one of the greatest joys in writing is annoying your characters like you would your pet cats. These are things I had never given such focused thought to before, so thank you so much for all of that!

NOW, THE LONG AWAITED RESULTS (IMPORTANT BITS ARE BOLDED AND IN CAPS):

First, Ignacio was absolutely a ye olde frat boy before his curse. He loved to have a good time, and for him that meant drinking, flirting, and doing stupid things for booze or attention. You can imagine that he was more than a little shocked when he woke up after being dragon-cursed to discover that even getting anything but the most watered-down of ales close to his mouth would result in unintentional fire breath. On the plus side, he literally can’t drunkenly brag about anything that could get yet another curse placed on him. Unfortunately, his social life is kaput.

To clarify: IGNACIO CAN NOT DRINK ALCOHOL. Kudos to those of you who sussed that out!

Second, the Witch King might be involved in the darker side of the magical arts, but he hasn’t led the kingdom into a war, or caused a famine, or raised taxes, or angered the gods, or gotten the land cursed by a malevolent fairy who turned his entire castle staff into talking furniture, and he even takes constructive criticism and travels regularly to check on how things are running, so he’s doing pretty well. There hasn’t even been a plague of either the magical or non-magical variety. There might have been a few sketchy rituals when he was just a Witch Prince, but since then he’s grown as a person and he takes his job very seriously. Depending on the day, it wouldn’t be unheard of for about 86% of his citizens to approve of him, if you bothered to ask.

So: THE WITCH KING WOULD HAVE A HIGH APPROVAL RATING.

Which means…

THE LIE WAS THAT IGNACIO AND JACK WERE CHILDHOOD FRIENDS.

The two of them never even knew each other as children. There isn’t any personal reason for Jack to be opposed to Ignacio, just Jack’s adherence to the classic fairy tale trope of Good vs Evil. As far as he’s concerned, Iggy is an Evil Dragon Necromancer Villain and the perfect to Jack’s Poor Farm Boy Hero shtick. You would think this would make it easier for Iggy to plead his case, but Jack has a very firm view of right and wrong and has placed Iggy firmly on the side of wrong, so he won’t even hear the guy out. As if our boy doesn’t have enough problems.

Two Truths and a Lie

My first writeblr game! Thank you to @new-royston-cursebreakers for the tag! His poll is here.

I'll put a little bit about my wip first, since I haven't actually talked about it here.

Protag: Ignacio, adventurer dragon fighter blaggard and reluctant necromancer.

Background and motivation: He's been cursed with burning blood, scales, and other dragon-related suffering by a witch king. The curse can only be broken when Ignacio slays the dragon that had been tormenting the realm. This would be difficult enough, but to top it all off, the dragon died on it's own before Ignacio could get to it. Now Ignacio is searching for some way to bring the dragon back from the dead so he can kill it again and finally get back to his old life.

Setting: The world functions on fairy tale logic, where strange and disturbing things are considered normal and almost everyone who could be helpful is unnecessary cryptic. There're plenty of classic fairy tale characters, including talking animals, pixies, trolls, knights, princesses, witches in disguise, and many more.

Antag: Jack, a simple farm boy who's strangely proficient with a sword. He's the classic hero, chosen by fate to stop Ignacio from resurrecting the dragon that laid waste to their kingdom.

When Danny enters the Fenton portal for the very first time, he still trips and shocks himself but at the same time damages the inside of the portal enough that it can’t sustain itself past the point of changing Danny’s molecules.

The electricity and damage done to both Danny and the portal isn’t something Danny, Sam, and Tucker can cover up and his parents find out immediately. They’re more concerned about their son then the portal (they have the blueprints for the portal and can rebuild it later but can’t replace their son if something happened to him) and go through a lot of things emotions regarding the existence of ghost human hybrids.

Danny’s new biology could easily be passed as meta human traits. Unfortunately President Lex Luther had just recently passed laws against meta humans. Meaning they can’t risk people find out about Danny’s new powers, at all. The Fentons decide that Danny should live with one of Maddie or Jacks relatives off grid until he can control his new abilities better.

luckily Jacks sister, Martha, and her husband have experience with a super powered child and after their son moved to the city could probably use a hand on their farm. All Jack needed to do was call.

savanaclaw + ace discovering the slap battles that they have in russia. gray would speak of it and they would probably start laughing lol, i believe that ace would go, but he would pass out from a slap that the first opponent gave

I don’t know if Gray knows about these (I’d never heard of them before!) but the idea of Ace being super confident in his skills before getting absolutely WRECKED by someone (Jack probably though Leona would be funny and Ruggie would be amazing) is making me crack up. He just goes ramrod stiff and topples over. He can dish it out but can’t take it.

"Yeah, farm's okay. Safe, I mean. Somethin' not a lot of people know is that it ain't always about the chance of losin' the farm or 'bout someone tryin' to buy ya out. It ain't always about that. There's a Hell of a lot of other problems to be had when ya live on a farm." Jack replied.

"So what's wrong?"

"Race's horse ain't doin' so good. We think she's coliced."

"What's that mean?"

"Like a stomach ache for horses, but it can kill 'em. Sometimes. We think it's bad, but we can't 'xactly afford a trip to the vet right now. Race is devastated."

"I bet."

"He's slept in the barn on a sleepin' pad next to her for the last three nights. She ain't gettin' much better."

"I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can help with?"

"Not really, Davey, unless you have fifteen thousand dollars lyin' around to get her surgery if she needs."

"I don't, I'm sorry."

"I guess just keep her an' Race in your prayers, then, yeah?"

"Of course."

People ask me who my favorite OC is and it's always gonna be Jack and if you do not believe it-that little guy according to Toyhouse has 550 picture of him I've drawn to date and I know that ain't accurate because I have so many pictures of him that aren't on the site because their file size was too big or they're comic pages or they're in my sketchbook or they're on my priv alt account

What I am saying is that Jack has so much art and is the best character to look at to watch my growth as an artist tbh-he's like a walking timeline tbh since I never stop drawing him

DCXDP fanfic idea: You ARE the Father.

Clark Kent gets a call from his old high school situationship. Really, he liked her well enough, but both had agreed they did not want to stay stuck in Smallville forever.

Clark wanted to go to the big city for journalism, and Maddie wanted to go into the sciences - she was unsure if she wanted to do organic chemistry or engineering. His parents supported his dream, Maddie's....not so much.

While she did come from a family of intelligent women, the Paynes believed they should stay on the family farm to support the family. They could not understand why Maddie wanted to be strong and independent woman if all that would bring her was dying alone.

According to them, no man wanted a disobent wife. She argued too much with men and often wouldn't back down from her stance.

Apparently, that made her "unlady" like.

Clark never saw it. Personally, he thought women with backbone, who wouldn't take anyone shit, was insanely attractive. That's why he had approached her at the local science fair where she was steaming by her impressive solar energy powered homemade phone.

Her mother had just finished reminding her that her first place in a small high school fair was nothing to be proud of. It was, after all, only Smallville, and really, there wasn't much competition anyway.

Clark told her that she was likely the smartest person in their entire state and he was in awe by her. Maddie kissed him behind the gym the science fair was being held.

Her family forbade her from dating, which made the kiss somehow more exciting.

They met up regularly to sneak kisses or lend a sympathetic ear. Around their last year of high school, they went a little further then kisses, and really the Kent Barn is not the most comfortable place but it was hidden well enough her family wouldn't know what she was up to and Ma wouldn't question him spending the night there.

All the years of sleeping near the cows to keep them company, since he worried they were lonely, as a child paid off. Despite the numerous times they put Kent barn to work, both knew it was nothing serious.

Maddie needed a break from her family. Clark was more than happy to be her stress relief. He did worry a aweful lot about his powers and the fact he was an alien, so he needed some stress relieving of his own around those years too.

Maddie applied secretly to a big college on the Wayne Scholarship states away, and Clark planned on going to Metropolis as soon as possible for the open intership at the Daily Planet.

They were friends with benefits, but the day graduation came around, they never spoke to each other again. Neither were bitter. They had both known what would be the ending long before it arrived. It would have never worked between them.

Clark wasn't sure what Maddie had wanted after all these years, but being presented a teenage girl- the splitting image of Maddie at that age- who was flouting five feet off the ground was not one of them.

"Jazz, meet Clark Kent, you biological father" Maddie Fenton, for she was married now to the man who had raised Jazz like his own. "Clark, this is Jasmine Fenton...you're daughter"

The man of Steel felt like he's was going to faint.

Or.......

Maddie met Jack in her first semester of college. They get alone really well, and she finds herself with a pregnancy scare before she knows what happened. Sometime between the protrype portal and Jack treating her like an equal, she had found her walls coming down long enough to have a little fun.

The worst part is she is unsure of who the father is, the loveable goof she can see herself spending her life with or the kind gentle famer boy she left behind. It's only two months apart, but it was close enough it could go either way.

She tells Jack the truth, who declares that he doesn't care and gets down on one knee right there and then. Maddie agrees to marry him over the choked tears, blooming happiness and love so strong she feels dizzy from it.

A few months later, she gives birth to her Jazz, and two years later, she has Danny. The Fentons finish school, set up Fenton Works, and raise their family. She never considers telling Clark or getting Jazz tested.

She's Jack Fenton's daughter. That's all there is to it.

Until Jazz one day starts showing signs that Jack is not her father. How does Maddie know? Simple, she recognized the man flying around calling himself Superman, and after hearing of his home planet, and all the little things Clark had been too clumsy to properly cover up back in the day, it clicks.

Her daughter is half Kryptonian and her powers were awakening. Did all Kryptonians unlock thier abilities at the teenage age? Was it a puberty thing for thier kind?

Maddie didn't know, but she couldn't afford to let her daighter go in blind. Metas had tough lives. Who knows what being part alien could do. So she picked up the phone and dialed the man who may have the answers.

Meanwhile, Danny and Jazz are desperately trying to hide the fact that Jazz may have gotten some ghost abilities due to exposure from Phantom's Ghostly Wail and have no idea it's being confused for Kryptonian blood. They were careless in training, and now, similar to that whole fiasco with Spetra and her hospital, Jazz was unable to control her temporary abilities.

Jack is just happy to be there and is unaware of any of his family members' delimas.

I had planned to finish this into a full fledged animation, but a lot of the parts I did end up finishing just didnt live up to what I imagined…I waited for more motivation to happen, but it just didnt so HERES THE COLORED ANIMATIC CAUSE IM REALLLY HAPPY WITH WHAT I HAVE and ive sat on posting this for like a 2 weeks 😭 which is an eternity in my time

Im gonna post the unfinished “finished” part on my side account @o-sunny-day though! and probably have people yell at me cause it actually isnt that bad AND IT TOTALLY ISNT I just… art. You get it. ENOUGH YAPPING! ITS TIME TO YAP!

The explaining is much less expansive than in Dear My Dear just because I didnt work on it long enough to think every bit of it through. This is just a clean, nicer looking, and colored version of the very first storyboard.

I usually think about and put more effort into the little stuff while making the FINISHED bits since ive had so much more time to think about that in all the preppin n sketching.

BUT I liked the explaining format I did for Dear My Dear so im sticking with it!

The main idea for this was to do a study of Wingdings’ character from what we’ve been given, mainly focusing in on the expectations he puts on himself because holy shit the lyrics for this works so stupidly well it makes me mad LOOK AT THIS???

Wingdings and Sans holding hands as kids, before turning to a casket like appearance for adult WD. The flowers hes holding are pretty important too, Marigolds to represent grief, Lilys, new life, and Forget Me Nots for this lovely little line I found when looking up good flowers to use-

“a promise to always remember” ….stop that.

That actually also has a double meaning in this case too. 1, ofc the forgetting of Wingdings. But ALSO Wingdings forgetting something himself. Forgetting who he is. Almost like a Zuko ATLA situation.

Did you have a family?

Who knows where theyre parents are, but this is HAPPY TIME and we’re gonna assume they were so awesome and very kind but had to leave or went to a farm in the sky for whatever reason.

The colors here I had a lot of fun with. Their parents had warm colors but the boys have cold, still with warm accents. Its said they more or less raised each other being very independent as shown in the second part with them running out the door by themselves.

How was the view from the shelf? Did you ever believe in yourself?

Before, we started with the beginnings. The good things, the only thing Wingdings cares to even recall. Now we’re seeing his life really start to turn upside down- making first contact with The Player :D

He’s hesitant to reach out, but is intrigued, before getting a rushing revelation of his reality and how it isnt “real”

Rather than feeling crushing existential dread, he more feels pressured to be BETTER, to figure a solution, to do something. Thats what white represents here

WHAT KIND OF MILK WERE YOU?

We then switch to more examples of how Wingdings is taking this pressure (not well) The soft tones of yellow that were shown before, turn to way brighter, intensifying that feeling that he should be fine, he should be happy, drowning in success of being the Royal Scientist.

But he just desperately wants to just go back to a time of nice coldness.

The warm vs cold tones in this I had so much fun with, coldness is supposed to represent hostility usually, while warm is nice and happy. (same with Black and white. Scary, relieving,) But these points often contradict each other, its hard to tell what you’re feeling vs what you’re supposed to be feeling. Just like Wingdings!

WHAT KIND OF LIFE DID YOU LIVE THROUGH?

The white lab coats, the expectations, theyre on all of them. But Wingdings has essentially become his expectations.

He questions what life he wants to live, one being himself and alone (speaking in wingdings) or not himself and with company (speaking in a “normal” font) Still, he frames it in past tense as he believes theres no going back now, based on what he knows.

“One of the last happy moments they had together” stop that. (i cant find a link to when that was said but I know it was once, about them taking a photo together….)

DID YOUR LIFE RUN RICH WITH CALCIUM?

Compared to the childhood Wingdings remembered, heres the sadder, bleaker, more realistic version. He always thought they were laughing at him but… maybe they werent.

It doesnt matter now though. Because in the NOW, Wingdings has become consumed by his expectations of himself, seeing this has the “only option” to do the only thing that he feels will give his life meaning and purpose, establishing connection with THE PLAYER

But the grocery list goes on…

And yet life continues on without him, and his room is transformed into a more livable space now that someone is…living in it. Always hurts so much making the differences between Wingdings and Papyrus’ room. It feels like making something out of the man Wingdings COULD HAVE been. Because honestly thats just what Papyrus is,
