I have already mentioned the opus of Ted Templeman consisted of a large amount of credits thanks to him serving as a music producer since the early 70's. For instance, one of his collaborators from the era was Van Morrison. Say all you want about his latest LPs – I would agree with you, by the way –, but we have to admit his 70's remains a strong era for him. The important factor here was definitely Ted Templeman, since he produced three important albums for him during the time, including It's Too Late To Stop Now. I agree, highlighting a live disc might be weird, because you rarely notice who helms them. However, I do think Mr. Templeman had more input into the sound of the platter than the designation of the LP would've lead you to believe.

Storia di Musica #114 - Van Morrison, Veedon Fleece, 1974

I dischi del mese di Aprile saranno dischi legati a dei luoghi. Faremo un viaggio musicale in 4 dischi che esplorano un luogo, fisico o simbolico. Quello di oggi comincia con uno degli artisti del momento che all'apice del successo vede il suo matrimonio distruggersi: Janet Rigsbee chiede infatti a fine 1972 a Van Morrison si separarsi. Nel 1973 Van intraprende un viaggio in Irlanda, che lo ispira profondamente a mettere di nuovo in musica quello che sta vivendo. Di getto scrive moltissimo, poi inizia a lavorarci su con la solita grande squadra di supporto. Nel frattempo incontra una nuova donna, Carol Guida, e un po’ come fu per il suo capolavoro immenso, Astral Weeks, immagina un disco stream of consciousness dove raccontare storie e meraviglie di quel periodo. Veedon Fleece esce nell’ottobre 1974. In copertina la chioma rutilia di Morrison è in mezzo a due giganteschi Irish Wolfhound, sullo sfondo un maniero tra gli alberi. Veedon Flence significa il vello di Veedon ed è preso da un verso di una delle canzoni simbolo del disco, You Don’t Pull No Punches, But You Don’t Push The River: per molto tempo si è pensato che il vello di Veedon fosse legato a qualche leggenda celtica o ad una rivisitazione caledoniana del mito del Vello d’oro degli Argonauti, o addirittura al Sacro Graal, ma Morrison ha sempre dichiarato che fu solo la sua fantasia a partorire questa leggenda. Il disco fu stranamente poco apprezzato all’epoca, ma con il tempo è stato ampiamente riscoperto, mostrandosi come uno dei dischi più belli, intensi e musicalmente meravigliosi di Van The Man. Registrato al suo ritorno negli Stati Uniti, prodotto dallo stesso Morrison, con una squadra di strumentisti ad altissimo livello (tra gli altri John Tropea, il fidato basso di David Hayes, Jack Schroer al sassofono che saranno la spina dorsale della sua futura band di accompagnamento, The Caledonian Soul Orchestra) il disco è un mix emozionante di atmosfere acustiche, di ballate sentimentali con di sfondo i suoni e le vibrazioni dell’isola verde, in un disco che fu, fino a quel momento, il massimo esempio di quel caledonian sound che aveva messo un po’ in tutti i suoi lavori. Fair Play è un sogno di 6 minuti dove il basso e gli innesti di piano puntellano la voce, sempre clamorosa, di Morrison, che si ripete ai massimi livelli in due gioiellini come Linden Arden Stole The Highlights e Who Was That Masked Man, quest’ultima da pelle d’oca per l’uso del falsetto. Streets Of Arklow è una celebrazione dell’Irlanda, e del suo verde, (Arklow è una città della contea di Wicklow, a sud di Dublino), un mix meraviglioso di jazz e folk, con spruzzate di blues. A seguire, uno dei gioielli più luminosi dell’intero repertorio morrisoniano: You Don’t Pull No Punches, But You Don’t Push The River è un’epopea musicale, una storia d’amore, un viaggio nei prati e nei boschi che si trasforma in una caccia mitica al vello di Veedon, con gli archi, i flauti, la musica che sostengono la tensione emotiva di un pezzo cinematografico, uno dei suoi capolavori assoluti. La seconda parte, il lato B, si apre con la verve di Bulbs, meravigliosa, impreziosita dallo scat singing del nostro, e dalla bellezza di Cul De Sac, nella sua purezza acustica, piena di gorgheggi, un blues che sa di pub e whisky, con il finale dove Van motteggia con la sua voce il suono del sax. Si passo poi all’amore disatteso e molto autobiografico di Come Here My Love (Come here my love\This feeling has me spellbound\Yet the storyline, in paragraphs,\Laid down the same\In fathoms of my inner mind\I’m mystified, oh, by this mood\ This melancholy feeling\That just don’t do no good), County Fair è il brano che chiude, misticamente con i suoi flauti e cornamuse, questo disco, una viaggio cullati dalla sua voce, qui dolcissima. Dopo questo lavoro, Morrison si prenderà una lunga pausa, dove parteciperà solo a qualche concerto, ospite anche della Rolling Thunder Revue di Bob Dylan. Fu un periodo stranissimo, di frequenti ripensamenti personali, e solo dopo 3 anni arriverà A Moment Of Transition (1977) con il titolo che manifesta appieno questo tumulto creativo, che però verrà focalizzato nel suo capolavoro di fine decennio, Into The Music (1979). È fin troppo facile farsi rapire dalla sua vocalità selvaggia, potente, ma anche dolce e profonda, dal suo timbro scuro, dalla magia di questo artista, tra i più grandi di sempre, uno dei pochi a regalare incantesimi ad ogni disco.

Key St. Patrick’s Day listening / viewing -- Van the Man in San Fran, playing some classics and some more obscure numbers like “Streets of Arklow,” “Try For Sleep” and Dylan’s “Just Like A Woman.” The opener is a totally beautiful “Ballerina,” with Morrison’s vocals dancing around Jeff Labes’ playful piano.
