Pinky Crew Review: Matt Layzell
Get to know some behind the scenes facts with Matt Layzell !
Q: What is your role here at Nickelodeon & what drove you to start working in animation?
A: I'm Supervising Director on Pinky Malinky which means I help look over all the storyboards for the show and help a team of Editors cut them into animatics (rough plans for how each episode will look when its finished). I was lead into animation by my love of drawing combined with my love of film, comics and computer games. Making up characters and worlds was always fun so when I went to University and was introduced to Animation it was a cool combo of all that I enjoyed. Its a special kind of feeling when you successfully communicate a human emotion through a series of lines and colours you've designed, thats what keeps me working in animation.
Q: What are your top five favorite cartoons or creative works that inspired you to get involved in this field?
A: In bullet points, imagine a cool laser blast sound effect as you read each one. - Ren and Stimpy - Cowboy Bebop - Samurai Jack - Spirited Away - Dragonball Z
Q: What has been your favorite moment as supervising director on Pinky Malinky?
A: Honestly it's really hard to pick one when there are so many funny, weird, crazy and surprising moments in a day. All the moments! All balled up and squished together in one multicoloured moment. Good answer?...You decide.
Q: Which Pinky Malinky character do you relate most to and why? Also, what classic Nick character do you relate most to and why?
A: Pinky because I can relate to someone who, despite not knowing how to all the time, wants to make the world a better a place and is always excited by other people and new 'things'. Also, one could say that all humans are essentially just big talking sausages...so there's that too. Talking classic Nick, I like to see myself as an Arnold mixed with a little Stimpy.
Q: If you were a new addition to a crayon box, what color would you be and why?
A: Night sky colour. I imagine it's mostly a black crayon but with the occasional glitter speck in it. Is that a thing? That'd be cool crayon right? Does that exist? Im gonna google it now....cant find anything. That should be a crayon. Ooooh and a sunset one too!
Q: And finally, what would be your piece of advice for aspiring animators out there?
A: Make things all the time! Learn to have fun and enjoy the journey towards your goal so that you're always feeling good about where you're at and not wishing you were somewhere else. Ask for help and feedback as much as you can and not just from other artists. If you want to communicate through your work you need to make sure what you're saying is understood so test it out on a bunch of people. Don't be too precious. Take people’s advice and good ideas, nothing's original or unique, it’s all been done. Even the most experienced people are still learning and making it up as they go along. It’s ok to copy and steal other ideas, just try and do them better or in 'your own way'. That’s what everyone I look up to does, they take something thats been done a hundred times before and package it in a new exciting way. BE KIND AND NICE TO PEOPLE!!!

Jack Layzell's Top Games of 2020
Jack Layzell’s Top Games of 2020
I’m sure pretty much every one of these retrospective articles you’re going to read will start off with some form of “What a rubbish year”, “So long 2020!” or “2021 can’t come soon enough” etc. Even though these are feelings I share too, I want this article to be a celebration for the coping mechanisms that helped me survive this Steven Soderbergh-esque hellscape we’ve been living…
