Summary of Ishida’s Q&A about Jack Jeanne

I don’t have the time to translate the entire thing, so I wrote the gist of it…I say gist but I pretty much got everything from the interview, but just wrote it in my own words since that takes a lot less time. Only the last 2 paragraphs are exact translations. Enjoy!

The news for this opening ceremony is that Jack Jeanne is being released on the Nintendo Switch for 2020 release.

Ishida will not only be responsible for the character design, but also for world building, establishing the setting, in-game illustrations, and even taking a part in writing the lyrics to the songs. He and Towada Shin (the author of the Tokyo Ghoul light novels) will be working together on Jack Jeanne’s scenario.

Songs will be produced by Akira Kosemura, concept art done by Ronin (who has done concept art for other series like NieR:Automata, Bayonetta 2, Pokemon among many others), and in-game 3D dance choreography by Seishiro (the same choreographer who Ishida met a few months ago).

Q1: What is the concept of Jack Jeanne?

If he’s talking about the genre, he would describe it as a “shounen opera”. The concept of this work is that all the boys attending the Univers academy play both the roles of the male “Jack” and the female “Jeanne”. He was influenced by one of his personal activities, which was to make a shoujo manga.

Q2: There are differences between creating a game and creating a manga, but what do you think has been fun for you?

The first is that he’s working with people from all kinds of fields. He likes that he’s not making the game alone. When he’s creating his manga he can get his staff to help with the backgrounds and get his editors to look over the story, but when making a game he finds that it’s been fun working with people outside of his field of expertise to create the game.

Because he’s working with different people, everything feels a lot more fresh compared to producing a manga. He also likes how he can just work with other people because he wants to.

He also finds there’s a huge difference in how manga is produced for magazines with weekly deadlines, and now where he can see the big picture of the story he’s writing while also being able to focus on the details.

Q3: On the flipside, are there any difficulties you haven’t adjusted to yet?

Related to the fact that this game isn’t a weekly serialization, he’s still used to reading weekly content so he finds it frustrating that he can’t reveal the contents of the story.

Whereas manga serialization is a series of sprints repeated hundreds of times, game production is a marathon, so he finds he’s having a hard time putting use of the explosiveness of from which manga is made.

Additionally there’s a lot of checks he has to deal with, which are at the same level of importance as writing the story and drawing the illustrations, which can be difficult at times. Though it may just be a result of him being involved in so many different parts. Though it’s quite a lot, he promises to do his best.

Q4: The focus of this work, the premise of male characters playing the roles of women, and the spectacular world view leaves behind a big impression. What did you have in mind when you were creating the character designs?

The six men certainly have their own unique designs, but he considered the overall balance of their characters as the most important, putting a particular emphasis on their appearance and personality when all six characters are lined up next to each other.

Regarding individual characters, he made sure that he could show the characters who play the female Jeanne roles (Fumi and Shirota) and the characters who can play either role (Yonaga and Neji) with feminine attire and hairstyles.

He thought each of them would have a gender-neutral charm of their own.

Because of that, he specifically incorporated a manly charm for the characters who specialize in playing the male role of Jack, Kai and Suzu. Also, Kai was the very first character that he designed for Jack Jeanne, and he thinks his design played a role in determining the direction of the game.

On the contrary, the main character Kisa looks feminine at first glance, but he aimed to dress her in a way that would make her look like a bishounen.

Q5: This will be a work in which you have an extremely strong influence over, as you are working on the illustrations, scenario, world building, etc., but are there any specific points that you’re particular about?

He was careful to make sure the characters didn’t die…for example, in a manga he has the option of developing characters, whether friend or foe, through death, but since the characters in Jack Jeanne aren’t dying or killing each other off, he had to consider how to make the drama in the story interesting.

He’s had hundreds of meetings with Towada Shin who’s also involved in the scenario writing, and because he thought a lot about the drama within the story, he’s very particular about that part. And because the story within the story is happening in the screenplay one by one, it’s important to create such a backbone.

Also, he hasn’t started drawing yet but he’ll be drawing over 100 still illustrations by himself.

Q6: Lastly, please share with us your excitement for Jack Jeanne.

If I was like I used to be, I don’t think I would’ve gone this far even if a position for the game was offered to me. It’s a work that I’ve become deeply involved in, so for those who are interested please check it out. I’m working on a lot of things, and I think I can make the deadline for the stills. Top 100 Women Directors.

Ella Kemp takes a deep-dive into our newest all-time stats addition—the top 100 films directed by women—and finds, to nobody’s surprise, that Agnès Varda is indisputably the GOAT.

There are countless ‘best of’ lists on Letterboxd to track your progress against; some are maintained by our staff, while others are contributed by passionate members. If you’ve upgraded to Pro or Patron level, there’s a section on your all-time stats page (accessible directly from your profile) where we’ve gathered twelve key lists against which you can track your progress at a glance (example below), and we’ve also added ‘Completed Collections’ for Patrons, showing all franchises of three or more films that you’ve seen in their entirety (excluding unreleased entries).

In the interests of promoting a diverse range of titles, we’ve recently added a Top 100 Women Directors list to your all-time stats, compiled by Jack Moulton and ranked by overall weighted average rating. In other words, these are the female-directed (and female-identifying-directed) films that you, the Letterboxd community, have chosen as the best.

To celebrate, we invited Letterboxd member, writer and Girls on Tops photographer Ella Kemp to cast her eye over the current list (it’s bound to change in future based on new ratings cast).

Encompassing thousands of votes to meticulously rate and root for the greatest films we have courtesy of women directors, Letterboxd’s newest all-time list offers a sobering dissection of the way we consume movies—and how much we recognize the women responsible for these works.

At first glance, a scroll through the list boasts a generous handful of posters designed in the last couple of years. Five features released in the past twelve to eighteen months have made it straight to the top 20 (Portrait of A Lady on Fire, The Farewell, Booksmart, Lady Bird and Capernaum) with one of those films—not even publicly released in cinemas yet, but making waves at festivals around the world—already sitting at number two. That’s the power of Céline Sciamma and her Portrait.

Diving deeper, Sciamma’s top-tier triumph exemplifies a few key patterns. She returns at number 64 with Tomboy, reminding us what a great shame it is that her excellent feature Girlhood didn’t make the list, but confirming that France appears to be one of the best countries in the world for women to make movies: the list comprises 23 French features, which, considering the US’s oft-perceived monopoly on the film industry, feels monumental.

But of course, it’s not accidental either. This year sadly marked the passing of Agnès Varda, indisputably the GOAT. She stands proud as the most prolific contributor with six features, two in the top 20. To grieve, to remember, at least we can always keep watching.

Another singular trailblazer is Scotswoman Lynne Ramsay. She has four entries, but what’s most impressive is that these are, well, all the feature films she’s made to date. Her fourth entry, Morvern Callar, sneaks in at number 100.

Elaine May and Chantal Akerman both have three entries, which may come as no surprise to cinephiles, but it’s also the same number of entries as Japanese animator Naoko Yamada (whose A Silent Voice sits in sixteenth place on our list). This reveals an open-minded slant, one that acknowledges the widely perceived touchstones but also embraces further-reaching works from lesser-known artists. Five features are Japanese, four are German, three Italian, and three Indian.

The lean still remains very much with the US, and yet few films on the list break records for eye-watering budgets. The Matrix, courtesy of the Wachowskis, was made for $63 million, and Shrek, co-directed by Vicky Jenson, had a budget of $60 million. Aside from these two, projects on the list seldom had more than $10–15 million to get the job done.

When looking at the list’s omissions, one almost unanimous absence is that of the highest-grossing films of all time directed by women. No Sleepless in Seattle, no Frozen, no Fifty Shades of Grey. No Nora Ephron, No Nancy Meyers. No Ava DuVernay. It’s a peculiar gap, as the influence of these writers and filmmakers is hardly one to be contested. And, to close the circle on big budgets, $120-150-million-wielding Patty Jenkins is also absent. The highest-grossing film directed by a woman (with no male directing partner)—a cool $821.8 million at the global box office—did not make the cut.

On this topic, there are sixteen films co-directed by women on the list. A co-directing mention is a crucial credit. It’s like the trust exercises that used to be taught in school drama classes—how would they work if one party wasn’t there to catch the other as they fell? What’s the point in being brave if you don’t also have some kind of promise of safety? Partners need each other, and these directors needed partners to reach the heights they did. City of God, co-directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, was nominated for four Oscars, and yet Meirelles was still the only filmmaker credited at the ceremony. The Academy chose to disregard Lund, but our list does not. There are five female co-directors in the top 20. One of the highest-grossing films on the list, Shrek, would not be what it is without Vicky Jenson.

Also curious: Palme d’Or winner Jane Campion makes the list, best director Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow does not. Overall, the list shows a vast body of skill, a crop of familiar names, some deeply felt absences and—hopefully—a whole lot of additions to watchlists. Further names that deserve to be sought out, in no particular order, include Mabel Normand, Maya Deren, Josephine Decker, Jennie Livingston, Mia Hansen-Løve, Dee Rees, Joanna Hogg, Gurinder Chadha, Barbara Hammer, and directors with new films soon to be released: Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Niki Caro (the live-action Mulan) and Kasi Lemmons (Harriet).

Writing this breakdown gave me plenty of homework, and it shed light on a lot of works that I’m yet to catch up with. At first I thought it pretty normal to not have seen as many on the list as I would have liked, taking into account my age, access and time, but the further I went, the more names cropped up that I didn’t recognize, and the more I recalled my three years studying film at university and not having learned anything about so many of these women.

I should know more names. I should have been set more assignments regarding more of these names. I can do more, but so too can those above me, those who taught me and continue to teach others, about who makes the films that are worth learning about. We now have lists such as this one—it’s high time we start to properly use them.

I chatted with someone who attended the Ishida Sui exhibition, and I learned a lot of interesting stuff, especially regarding the 124 Q&As! She doesn’t remember everything, but I noted the new information down.

Q: Other characters in the story blush when they smile, but why is it that for Juuzou that portrayal doesn’t exist?

A: Juuzou doesn’t know how to smile in a way that makes his cheeks blush.

Q: How did you decide the names of the ghoul characters?

A: I decided based on whether the name sounds like it would fit the character, and for the 1st part of their name, by shiritori. (Ayato→Touka→Kaneki)

Q: How did you choose your pen name Ishida Sui?

A: I like watermelon, and 1 part I took from my real name.

Q: When drawing characters, where do you start from? [I think I already posted this before, but I’ll include it just in case.]

A: I start from the upper left part of the head.

From the Q&A, it was also revealed that Towada Shin (the writer of the TG LNs and co-writer for Jack Jeanne) is siblings with Ishida???? Towada is the older sister and Ishida is the younger brother. I had to double check to make sure, and I found someone who went to the exhibition who confirmed it (X).

Ishida also mentioned that he thinks he resembles Kaneki.

Regarding the original TG manuscript, it was about Kaneki and the ghoul investigator Shinohara (so I was right about that one scene giving me Shinohara vibes!).

And to end on a bright note:

Q: I feel I will never encounter a work as wonderful as Tokyo Ghoul again. Do you have any goals going on forward as a mangaka?

A: To create a work that will overturn your feelings of never encountering a wonderful work like Tokyo Ghoul again.

Random thoughts about the Jack Jeanne Q&A:

Ishida is finally fulfilling his shoujo manga fantasies through Jack Jeanne lmao

I’m interested to see how Ishida is adjusting to the vastly different production schedules between manga and games. He’s talented in writing stories, but part of his issues in TG were due to the short deadlines that manga have and how that affected his health, so I wonder if having more time and only releasing the story once it’s 100% complete will do him good (it definitely will, but to what degree who knows)

Gender is a topic Ishida has explored in his works even in his early webcomics and in his life with the people around him, so I’m curious to see how he’ll explore it in Jack Jeanne, where gender seems to be the biggest theme in the game.
