Will the sea 'swallow' the Brazilian city of Recife? Threat to the Brazilian capital most vulnerable to climate change, explained
A United Nations report showed that the capital of Pernambuco is the 16th most threatened city in the world. Geography, demographic density and social inequality aggravate the situation, according to experts.

[Image description: view from Boa Viagem Beach, in the south side of Recife, shows proximity between buildings and the sea.]
Recife is the Brazilian capital most threatened by rising sea levels, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations (UN). The report also points to "Brazilian Venice" in 16th position among the cities on the planet that are most at risk.
Among the conclusions of the latest IPCC report, released in August, is the estimate that humans were responsible for a 1.07°C increase in the planet's temperature. The rise in sea level is just one of the effects of constant climate change pointed out by experts.
Several aspects make Recife the city most affected by maritime advances, such as geography, population density and even social inequality, according to specialists. This does not mean that the capital will be 'swallowed' by the ocean, but rather that it has many challenges to face.
In 2019, the city issued a decree recognizing the climate emergency in the capital and announced that it would include the theme in the schools' curricula.
According to Professor Marcus Silva, from the Department of Oceanography at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), during the 20th century, it is estimated that the sea level rose between 30 and 40 centimeters globally. However, each region is affected differently by the change.
"The cities mentioned in the report are Recife, Rio de Janeiro and Santos (in the state of São Paulo). Here, we have the issue of the city level in relation to the sea, since Recife is the lowest city in Brazil and is at sea level. Moreover, the city has an urban area very close to the estuary hill. São Luís, for example, is higher, and it shouldn't have that much problem.", explained Marcus Silva.
Experts point out that the speed at which the sea advances has been increasing exponentially, faster and faster. This does not mean, however, that cities should be taken by the water and cease to exist, but that problems, specific to each location, will gradually arise.
"We have a historical and cultural heritage very close to the sea, and that allied to an extreme population density and land use, within a coastal zone. There is a population in social vulnerability, because the economic inequality and the social difference in Recife is big. There are communities that subsist on what comes from the estuary, such as Bode, Ilha de Deus, Brasília Teimosa [South Zone] and Afogados [West Zone]," he declared.
For Marcus Silva, one of the alternatives considered by specialists include, for example, the fattening of the Beach of Boa Viagem, whose shore is immediately full of buildings facing the sea. A similar process was completed in 2013 in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife.
"The problems are countless and they are not limited to the beach. We will have transport problems, sanitary sewage, it's all together. We look at Boa Viagem and the buildings are all facing the sea. But we are a city cut by rivers and in them, all the buildings are from the coast to the water. We need to think about this shared contact with the water.", he explained.
The professor of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at UFPE, Roberto Montezuma, recalled that the problem needs to be thought in both global and local perspectives at the same time.
"The important thing is for us to think that this problem, in fact, is an opportunity. In which the entire Brazilian society and everyone must be united to solve it. Recife has always been a regional reference point and when it was created, it was invented as a port. Over time, we've turned our backs on nature and that needs to change.", said Montezuma.
Via a note, Recife’s City Hall stated that it is seeking ways and solutions that dialogue with the global sustainability agenda and that the city "has been adopting a series of measures through public planning to mitigate future impacts in a coordinated, integrated manner, and in local and international partnerships."
The administration cited actions to reduce gas emissions that contribute to the greenhouse effect, such as the replacement of public lighting lamps for LED, the Tree Planting Plan with free planting, and the installation of solar panels in public buildings.
G1 (the news outlet publishing this report) also asked the City Hall about the fattening of the Beach of Boa Viagem. They stated that the project is in the phase of updating the studies and, later, fundraising will be carried out. "This is an important project for the city and the management is committed to putting it into practice as soon as possible, but with great security, in order to avoid collateral damage that occurred in other cities.", the note says.

Carneiros Beach: Brazilian Caribbean
We knew the Brazilian Caribbean and it was not such a good experience. Carneiros beach was not in our schedule, but it came in at the last minute. Our destination would be Porto de Galinhas, but when we passed through Ceará a man we met indicated the beach and ended up changing the route and we went to the city of Tamandaré where the Carneiros Beach is located.
Tumblr media
Getting to Tamandaré was not so easy, it was a great challenge. I always tell you that we should not travel at night, especially for those who do not know the way, well, we broke that rule and we should not. We left Recife by 5:50 p.m., the traffic was already intense. We spent almost two hours to get out of the city and get to the highway that gives access to the coast.
There were many cars and trucks on the road, it looked like a holiday outing, but it was an ordinary day. Since we arrived in Recife we noticed that the traffic is very intense at all times. When we thought that when getting to the highway the traffic would be more tranquil we deceived ourselves, the transit languished near the city of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, industrial district of Recife. We stopped in the city of Cabo de Santo Agostinho to update our GPS (Global Positioning System) and refuel. It was another place we took to get out, as there were many vehicles, bikes and paths in the queue.
The access to the city of Tamandaré is by PE- 060, the road is badly signalized, with many holes and certain perimeters that there is narrowing of track. We were only able to reach the city of Tamandaré at about 9 a.m. in the evening.
The next day we wake up early to take the catamaran ride and guess what? The day was not favorable, but we went with the hope that the weather would improve, a fact that did not occur.
Tumblr media
On this day it seemed that nothing was in our favor, besides dawn raining, the company we hired canceled the tour for lack of passengers. But at least they sent us to another company so we would not miss the day.
Tumblr media
As we were in the northeastern winter season we were aware that we could go through this. So a tip, schedule yourself to go during the summer, although it is more expensive, you enjoy the place better. And before making the trip, schedule to make the lunch request soon, so that as soon as you arrive from the tour, it's ready.
Tumblr media
Prepare your pocket also, as the beach access ways are all privately owned you pay entrance to any one, unless you take a tour as we did or enjoy the local bars and restaurant services. Unfortunately, we saw that we did not make a good choice to change Porto de Galinhas through Tamandaré.
So for you who want to know the region of the coast of Pernambuco you better know Porto de Galinhas, there you have more option of walks, natural pools and instead of you pay the access to the beach you spend appreciating the local cuisine and other tours available. Even many people who were on our tour came from Porto de Galinhas and said the same thing.
But as we were already in town we continued our tour. It lasted for about 3 hours and was not even that complete because of the rainy day. We pass by the mangroves where there is a clay bath stop that lasts about an hour.
Tumblr media
Be very careful when passing the clay, never to pass in your bathing suit, because it is difficult to take after, I saw many people passing on the face and despairing to take, they say that the clay is good for the skin, it really is, but care are necessary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who was amused was the Romário, particularly I stayed in this day just recording the moments.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately we can not freshen up in the natural pools. Due to rain, the tide was full and it sold a lot, so it would be dangerous to stay in the water.
Tumblr media
Who saved the tour was a tour guide who in a very entertaining way enlivened the catamaran. To complete it he was dressed of Michael Jackson and did not allow to be shaken by the rain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition, the tour guide told us many curiosities and stories of the place, showed the rich flora and fauna of the region and the island shaped like an alligator.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite everything we've been through in Tamandaré, none of this takes away the beauty of the place. The waters really are transparent, I wonder if in the summer should be more transparent still. And deserves the title of Brazilian Caribbean.
Tumblr media
Our night in Tamandaré was very quiet, without rain. The movement in the city at night is very calm. We went to enjoy the Pernambuco cuisine at Churrascaria and Pizzaria-Lampião e Maria Bonita. They have a very varied menu and affordable prices.
Tumblr media
The decoration of the place is very beautiful, with elements more characteristic of the Northeastern culture.
Tumblr media
I was enchanted by some decorative objects, such as those of the old sewing machines and the records of Lampião e Maria Bonita.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The structure of the place imitates the stick houses, characteristic of the sertão.
Tumblr media
Another place that we can appreciate the local cuisine was at Pousada Bom Jesus, where we stayed.
Tumblr media
The inn is a very simple but very cozy place, owner Marcos, presented us at breakfast for the famous cracker and the traditional couscous, which I even lost count of how much I have tasted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our farewell from Tamandaré was marked with a cloudy day again, but with a wonderful breakfast and an exuberant view that we can not check before. The Tamandaré region is part of the environmental preservation area of the Atlantic Forest.
youtube
Tumblr media
We pass through a charming tunnel in the Biological Reserve of Saltinho that is part of this preservation area that gives access to Carneiros Beach and the city of Tamandaré.
Tumblr media
We want to come back here to meet the pools we do not know and go to Porto de Galinhas as well. Although it is a beautiful place, it is worth coming to Tamandaré only if you are already in Porto de Galinhas, because one place complements the other. Want to see more images of this trip? Check out the video.
