Hey hey this is kinda random but yall do know how easy it is to get Japanese games(or Chinese or korean) on ur phone right? I saw a bunch of ppl talking about how they're sad they can't play haikyuu touch the dream cuz it's not global but like u totally can and it's super easy
Android: just download qooapp u just gotta look up qooapp and if u want download their app and boom jp games galore! Qooapp is what I use but the caveat is its not for ios
Apple: okay ur getting this info second hand so if someone has more than I do that would be very helpful. From what I've heard u just have to make a Japanese apple ID and I don't have an apple phone so I don't know how it works sorry!
Japanese IP bypass: some Japanese games check if you have a Japanese IP address which makes them harder to download however u can work around it with a VPN. I used tunnelbear when I downloaded magireco and it Def worked. All I did was change my location to Japan and then make a Japanese IP email acc and sign in to the googleplay store. Make sure to set the app to auto update tho so u don't have to deal with it later. Luckily it's only a few games you'll have to do do this for
In conclusion:downloading Asian games is very easy and the only issue is language and u could easily look up translations for story and mission and stuff though I wouldn't recommend story heavy or games where you feel like you would need to be able to read I know some people use like apps that translate in real time but idk how to do that lmao

Made myself a little collective list of some favorite screenshots from the JP version of Vesperia along with some stray thoughts along the way. This post is part of my "the dub changed this stuff" post group, but I've separated these scenes as more of personal "I love these little scenes" scenes versus actual plot scenes that got altered.
I've also posted video clips of my favorite scenes and heavy changes, so consider those a supplement to this and vice versa.
My preference of the JP version also isn't just because of translation, but also the wording tone and vocal tone. I find it more fun/appealing/emotional/etc.
Part 1.
Part 2.
Part 3.
Part 4.
Tumblr media
This dunk on Flynn is everything to me (as in, Flynn does taste test... it just doesn't save anyone else).
Tumblr media
I swear that was the exact moment Yuri's "may have to adopt this child, gotta test it" radar turned on.
Mind you Yuri is also a lonely depressed mess and you can't even pry that from my cold dead hands. Karol slipping up right there was aaaall Yuri needed to protect that boy.
Tumblr media
Also posted this in video form because the way Flynn uses the exact same term (abandon) that Yuri used in the prison just gets me. Don doesn't even know Yuri used that wording before and Flynn says it anyway. Don doesn't know Yuri used that wording and Yuri doesn't even hear Flynn say this, but Flynn uses the exact term anyway. It's literally his way of saying to Yuri without telling him directly, "I would not abandon you".
Tumblr media
This one wasn't really changed in the dub, but I don't feel like making a video just for this. Basically I just love the way Toriumi made him sound so sleepy-annoyed, and then when he stands up he sounds tired-annoyed, like, I am so sick of this guy tired.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just think. this is adorable.
"How about you try knocking?" " 'Kay."
Tumblr media
I love the way this is phrased. He has so much faith in Yuri and knows if Yuri was in the knights that he could do so much. Like, not just, you could do this. Just. If it's you, then...
Tumblr media
I just LOVE the delivery here.
Tumblr media
You could also translate this as Yuri saying it's a mess here/Flynn looks like a mess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i lov heem.
(Changed in the dub to "Y'know, I've never been good at taking orders". Not the same energy to me LOL)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't actually remember what this was in the dub but I love this scene because of Yuri's reaction to what Raven said. Raven wasn't with them in Heliord when all that happened, implying to Yuri he was there though. But why? Why would he be in Heliord? Yes, we know Schwann was, but Raven never showed his face to them there. Yuri getting another accidental tip off that Raven is in fact very fishy for really real!
Tumblr media
Not an important change on the dub's end, but I like this version more because it kind of shows how far gone Zagi is. Obviously the blastia is not defying him and has no will of its own, but ye boi isn't really worried about that!
Tumblr media
Again, not really important, but the dub changed this to "the kids are alright", which is one of the very very very few changes I prefer. It adds to his character, whereas this is just good ol' Raven. It doesn't take away from anything and does actually show that he's rooting for them in a way (in a joking way since they're all in the desert and y'all know how he acts at this part). The dub comes across more as trying to alleviate Yuri of some of the burden by telling him the others are okay and implying not to worry so much.
That said, obviously I don't like when they change things and I do like the line he uses in the dub, but I'm not sure why they changed it...?
Tumblr media
Just Raven being a silly little guy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An interesting thing to note is that you can interpret this both as "a crime" and as "a sin". Basically, you could say Yuri's committed the act of a sinner, rather than just plainly saying they're crimes. Yuri follows up using the same word, which can be seen as admitting he believes he's committed acts of a sinner (so not just that murder is a crime, but that it's a sin and that he's a sinner for it).
Adds a bit more depth to how Yuri views himself/his actions imo, while Flynn is currently still in his "law is black and white" phase - something that is part of Flynn's own character arc and growth that he learns from and changes from.
A fun thing to also note is that Link, the gacha game, had a Yuri unit sporting the title "Sin Bearer", which fits perfectly in line with this and was likely a direct reference to this (note that it doesn't use "crime" in the title, but "sin", something that also relates back to Yuri in the gacha game Crestoria).
(Basically, the term used here is literally "tsumi", which can be used to mean both and in Yuri's case can be used interchangeably while meaning both at the same time. He's committed a crime and is a sinner because of it - though as mentioned above, Namco seems to prefer the continuation of the "sin" side of it in other official Yuri content)
Tumblr media
Full scene is here, but I just wanted to talk about this one particular part of the delivery.
Flynn's tone is very soft. He's literally just wondering where Yuri already disappeared to, and the anger in his voice is completely gone. It's pretty interesting to me because it almost feels like him confronting Yuri at the very end of the argument was like a formality as a knight, and him just being worked up about the law.
As soon as he switches his mindset and tone back to talking to Sodia about the barricade, it's like the tension in his mind was switched off and he's already lost the pressure of the moment. It actually almost sounds innocent, as if wondering why Yuri walked away. Obviously we can determine why Yuri walked away, but in a way here with Flynn, it actually almost sounds like he's confused. The dub had it be more of "oh, where'd he go", but to me the original delivery sounds genuinely confused about why he took off.
I obviously can't confirm what the intention was behind the delivery in this case without literally asking the JP director lol which tough shit because we know that's never gonna happen, but it almost feels like some crazy degree of Flynn's own internal/mental struggles.
Sort of like, wanting to uphold the law but still trying to be a friend to Yuri and having trouble because he can't separate the two from himself (i.e. yes he wants to uphold the law but not at Yuri's expense and is thus affected by bias. Obviously I can't confirm if just the way he says Yuri's name in this scene is an indicator that he's confused and it's causing his black and white view to crack, but it's an interesting thing to consider).
Tumblr media
Just a fun tidbit that got changed in the dub. They probably figured most players wouldn't actually know what he meant here and so just changed it to what the term actually means. Basically, it means they're the ones traveling/not in their home territory and thus don't have the advantage.
Tumblr media
i love you yuri lowell
Tumblr media
i stan a man and we're all just gonna have to live with that.
Tumblr media
Can also be translated as Flynn wanting to settle things with the him who believed in Alexei.
I genuinely don't even actually know what the dub uses for Flynn's line here, but I love this line so I'm including it here.
Tumblr media
This is literally just Yuri saying "thank you, thank you", but in English then in Japanese. I love this dork.

Being bilingual sometimes sucks bc I remember a while ago I wanted to write this reinochi fic where there’s was this visual gag of sorts that only worked in Spanish but lost all meaning in English and bro that’s painful
The gag in itself was based on this saying we have in Spanish, its literal translation being “put the batteries on” but in a more localized sense it would be the equivalent of “get it together” and yeh the thing went with Rei giving Tobi a box filled with batteries which ofc makes sense in Spanish bc of the way the saying goes while in English it just feels weird and awkward…ofc as you know I write all my fics in Spanish first and then translate them to English I usually try to find a way to make it work but I couldn’t in this case so I had to drop the whole idea 😭😭😭
Reminds me of that one mistletoe fic I wrote years ago where I managed to make it work however the ending had a different context in each version…if you read that you know that by the end Tobi punches Rei bc he mispronounces the word mistletoe (dumbass)… in Spanish the word for mistletoe “muérdago” sounds very similar to the word “muérgano” which can be used to describe a person that is useless, rude or has bad manners/is not well behaved while in English I used the word “mistlefoe” that I’m sure it’s not a real word but I saw it in a meme and for all intent and purposes worked for the story LMAO so yeh the differences in the ending are that in Spanish he hits Rei bc he thinks you are supposed to hit unpleasant people under the mistletoe while in English he hits Rei bc he thinks you are supposed to fight people under the mistletoe…
Translating is really fun for things like these when you make it work but when you can’t it kinda sucks…..the battery gag was so good I’m sad I can’t use it

A friend of mine is a huge fan of this musician with an awful tendency to regret everything and suddenly delete his creations. I used to find the shenanigans merely amusing, but now I find him terribly relatable...

idk probably bc he literally says it? "She's in love with the legend. I was the same way once." youre being deliberately obtuse if you don't accept that as the "proof" that's so important to you.
yeah you could interpret that romantically. the original japanese line even specifies "legend" as being in reference to a person and not a story myth fable etc. but there's something I read that makes me unsure. since I'm completely reliant on machine translation, I was hesitant to post about it. there are a lot of machine translated posts on my blog though so I guess it wouldn't be any more dubious than what I've already posted :|

No shade, but there's something pretty funny about me making it very clear that this is an 18+ monsterfucker blog and people unfollowing me whenever I post 18+ monsterfucker art.
Like I literally do not know what those people were expecting? Follow or unfollow as you please and all that jazz, but literally what were they expecting me to post if not that? 🤷‍♂️
Anyways, here's a reminder; This blog is an 18+ monsterfucker blog where I post about my monster art, so following me means you will see these things. If you want to only see the milder stuff, I do use tags you can filter through! I use orange [sfw], lime [mature but not explicit], and lemon [mature and explicit] when it comes to rating ✌

disclaimer im still a beginner with japanese etc etc but i know enough (at least enough basic words) to be able to pick out words and short phrases in sentences and (when possible) compare them to english translations and what i find so fascinating so far is that like...my general impression is that its not uncommon for japanese sentences to be very short in a way that feels like it has empty space for the translation to fill?
the main (...only, for now) places i interact with jp->en translations are looking up translations to songs i like + reading the english subs while playing y0 and like ok i just got done playing y0 for a couple hours and at one point one of the characters said "anta wa?" which i recognized as literally being "you (TOPIC) (RISING INTONATION INDICATING A QUESTION)" and the subs said "what are you doing here?" and it kind of caught me off guard...ofc its a good and sensible translation (honestly the translation in this game seems high quality which makes sense lol its literally sega anyway back on topic) but its soooo interesting to me how in japanese a sentence that was literally a pronoun a topic marker and an intonation turned into FIVE words in english...so we can infer that the meaning present in the english sentence was also present in the japanese sentence but it was packed into such a smaller space...
i see the same thing in song translations like i'll compare a JP lyric to its translation side by side and see that something that was completely invisible in JP has now suddenly appeared in english and its so fascinating..!!! like 心の音 (lit. "sound of heart/heart's sound") became "the sound of your heart" and i was like !!!!!!! what!!!!!!!! idk anyway i know i never write paragraphs on here but i just like to be a nerd about this kind of thing
#mine#the other thing is that as u guys may know i speak spanish#and as u may or may not know i do some translating with it as a hobby#and its also really interesting to contrast that#my impression with jp->en is that because of all the empty space and the grammatical and cultural differences#(side tangent...i wonder if part of why some jp sentences get to be shorter and pack more meaning into that small space#is because of the whole thing of japan being relatively isolated for a lot of its history and only coming into contact with so many#languages and countries vs like. how intermingled european countries and languages have always been for example#i read the other day how japanese is so different because japanese people have just kind of always been there and the culture has spent#such a long time developing almost by itself in the same place with the same people over such a long period of time#that thats why so many things in the language are kind of left unsaid because everyone shares the same cultural context#really cool stuff) anyway because of all of that my impression is that as a translator you almost have more freedom in a way#i can see it being hard on the one hand because having more options means having to choose#but on the other hand...it IS more freedom#with spanish we dont get that because it's so much closer to english in terms of....well almosteverything if we're comparing to japanese lo#which sometimes makes things easy but sometimes i think man i wish i had a bit more ambiguity and freedom to interpret here...#which is partially my own fault since im still developing my own personal style re: how direct and literal i want my translations to be#but like idk...it makes me want to keep learning!!!! so one day i can translate jp->en myself...#waow...

Ino crumb anon here, if you ever get a chance pls listen to the cds too! I love the voice acting and score in them. And yea the fandom has had its ups and downs with translators over the years. I never realized how much beef there was until I saw a bunch of older (late 2000s - early 10s) blogs and twitter accounts complaining about some guys who did a particularly shitty job. Another thing that I’m grateful about Bridget getting in strive is the fandom learning not to trust every single guy who claims to know japanese. I’m glad the fandom is shifting to translators who are more transparent about their process. Anyways, just thanks for work you guys do
I'll see if I can dig them up!! I've got access to the GGX Drama CDs but not the audio for the Red/Black ones (but I know where to look so it's ok, I'll find them eventually).
Oh yeah I have no idea what fully went down in the early GG Japanese->English translation community, but digging through old files and archives has a sense of walking through a field where you know a lot of people died in an old war lol The details of what happened are something I've resolved to leave in the past. It feels too much like poking at a Pandora's Box.
If you ever see a translator insisting that their translation is right but they won't even do the bare minimum of sharing the original Japanese line, then something's up for sure haha There was a lot of that when Bridget was added to Strive...
Thank you for reading the stuff we do!! It's motivating, honestly, knowing people take some time out to read our projects <3
