hey. imagine jopson as someone who narrowly dodged addiction himself. saw his mother happy on laudanum after years of being a poor widow and then disabled. young man with high anxiety high desire for control & steward's access to liquor, maybe he wants to feel good too. drinking's so easy to let build, fester. jopflogging as being partially some kind of attempt at intervention from a Crozier who knows his own tendencies and doesn't want to see this nice young man like that. jopson who years later sees Hickey flogged and flinches both at the brutality, the phantom pain of his own lashes, and seeing Crozier sway on his feet as he oversees. a jopson who perhaps looks at crozier asleep after another night drowning sorrows, thinks 'hypocrite', and then becomes sick with guilt and sympathy and a kind of relief it's not him. jopson who deep down sees francis not as an ideal but as a dark mirror. a father but the father he thinks he deserves. can anyone hear me it's so dark in here
