Kevin Koe rebounds with 6-5 win over Kurt Balderston at Champions Cup
Calgary’s Kevin Koe rebounded with a 6-5 victory over Kurt Balderston of Grand Prairie, Alta., on Day 2 of the Champions Cup in Calgary on Wednesday.
Koe, who was the runner-up at the 2017 event, fell behind 4-2 after five ends, but rallied by scoring four points in the final three frames to cap the comeback win. Koe improved his record to 1-1 after dropping his first match 6-3 to Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaugson on the opening day.
In other men’s draw action, defending champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., lost his first match 5-3 to Greg Persinger’s rink from Seattle. But he followed up with a 10-5 win over Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers later on Wednesday.
Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., the runner-up at the world championship earlier this month, defeated Tyler Tardi’s team from Langley, B.C., 8-3.
Jones delivers drubbing
On the women’s side, Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones opened with an 8-1 drubbing of Val Sweeting’s Edmonton rink.
Jones is coming off a loss in the final of the Players’ Championship to American Jamie Sinclair earlier this month.
Calgary’s Chelsea Carey squad lost to Switzerland’s Alina Paetz 8-2 and Rachel Homan of Ottawa dropped a close match with Sinclair 5-4.
Round-robin play continues Thursday. The elimination draws begin Saturday, with the championship draw scheduled for Sunday.
The Champions Cup is the seventh and final event on the Grand Slam of Curling tour.

Brad Gushue’s St. John’s rink secures playoff berth at Canadian Open
Brad Gushue’s St. John’s rink secures playoff berth at Canadian Open Brad Gushue’s St. John’s rink secures playoff berth at Canadian Open https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. — Brad Gushue has locked up a spot in the playoffs at the Canadian Open.
Gushue’s St. John’s, N.L., rink won their third straight game, doubling up defending champion Peter de Cruz of Switzerland 4-2 in the late draw of the men’s B-event qualifiers Friday night at the third major of the Grand Slam season.
Gushue captured his second career Canadian Open two years ago.
With the loss, De Cruz fell to the C-event finals and will have a final chance to advance to the playoffs against Toronto’s John Epping on Saturday morning. Epping moved on after a 4-3 win over Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers.
In other men’s action, Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., advanced out of the B-event qualifiers by defeating Brad Jacobs’ squad from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., 5-3. Howard is slated to play Gushue in quarterfinal action Saturday.
Jacobs will face Regina’s Matt Dunstone, who stayed alive with a 10-2 win over Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaugson, in the C-event finals.
Earlier Friday, Calgary’s Kevin Koe dominated Sweden’s Niklas Edin 7-2 in six ends to advance to the playoffs.
Edin takes on Winnipeg’s Braden Calvert, who eliminated Scott McDonald’s Kingston, Ont., rink with an 8-5 victory, in the third C qualifier.
Meanwhile, Scotland’s Bruce Mouat and Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher are through to the playoffs after surviving the A event.
On the women’s side, Edmonton’s Chelsea Carey capped her day with a third straight win, a 6-2 victory over Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa, to move on to the playoffs. Earlier Friday, she ousted Winnipeg’s Darcy Robertson and Isabella Wrana of Sweden.
Scotland’s Eve Muirhead, who went 3-0 in the A event, will clash with Carey in the first round of the playoffs.
Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni blanked Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones 6-0 and Casey Scheidegger’s rink from Lethbridge, Alta., beat Tracy Fleury of East St. Paul, Man., to claim the other two C-event playoff spots.
Scheidegger won the 2017 Canadian Open women’s title in North Battleford, Sask. She’ll take on top seed Rachel Homan of Ottawa, who advanced through the A event, in the quarterfinals.
Tirinzoni will have a rematch with Robyn Silvernagle’s rink from North Battleford, Sask., which knocked them off 8-4 in a B-event game earlier Friday.
Others to advance Friday were Edmonton’s Laura Walker and American Nina Roth from the B event. They will face each other in the playoffs.
Walker beat Fujisawa 8-6, while Roth edged Scheidegger 5-4.
The Canadian Open uses a triple knockout format.

“Chickens Stolen, and Pigeons Too,” Toronto Star. June 8, 1909. Page 10. --- And Two Young Fellows Will Go to Jail for Purloining the Poultry. --- CASES IN THE POLICE COURT --- Bad Language and Fighting - 30 Days for Begging - Theft From Yacht. --- Adolphus Parpagliolo was sentenced to jail for 30 days, hard labor, by Magistrate Kingsford in the Police Court this morning for the theft of a fur cap from the yacht Canada, owned by Mr. George Duthie.
Adolphus was arrested on the 1st of June by Detective Armstrong. The officer had to row out to the boat, which was about 300 feet out from the foot of York Street. He found A. P. on board, with the fur cap under his coat and a pair of boots rolled up in paper near him.
‘How he got to the boat is a mystery,’ said Mr. Corley, ‘as there was no dinghy near.’
‘Is this his first offence?’ asked his Worship.
‘Yes, but it seems he doesn’t work,’ replied the Crown Attorney.
To the Jail Hospital Mary Carruthers, small of stature, watery of eye, and with the tremolo stop working overtime, admitted she was drunk, but gave numerous valid reasons for such being the case - husband, pain in stomach, general debility, etc.
‘I want to go to the hospital,’ ended she.
‘I’ll remand you for a week,’ said his Worship. ‘There’s a hospital there.’
‘Catherine Cameron,’ said the magistrate to one dressed in a hectic combination of blue and red and green; ‘you’re charged with being drunk. What do you say?’
“Drunk,’ said she, very simply.
And just as simply came his Worship’s reply: ‘One dollar and costs or thirty days.’
Thomas Nugent, a regular visitor, said, ‘sure, he was drunk.’ He was given the usual fine. ‘Give me time?’ asked he.
‘No.’
So Thomas, who usually runs this bluff, came forward and paid up.
Raised Disturbances. Circumstances were too much for Patrick Foley’s tongue last night, and he let it run away with his discretion, which cost him just a dollar and costs or 10 days.
George Pesnen and John Laine were fighting on the street last night, and as neither was sure how it happened, both were fined a dollar and costs.
John Burke got one and costs for trespassing in the yards of the G. T. R. at the foot of Simcoe street. For Begging. Peter Donnelly was indignant, when informed that he was charged with being a vagrant.
‘The cop is just trying to get me convicted,’ said he. ‘I was selling shoe laces and court plaster.’
But the evidence tended to show that he did more begging than selling, so he goes down for 30 days.
For Stealing Pigeons. The theft of seventeen pigeons from Grevitte Elliott was the charge against Russell Jackson, a young fellow of twenty-two.
According to Elliott about four or five days after the birds disappeared he saw a couple of them in Jackson’s pigeon coop. He came to the detective office and got an officer and a search warrant. Twelve pigeons beloging to Elliott were found.
Jackson protested his innocence, but even when his brother-in-law gave evidence for him, Mr. Corley said, ‘the tracks of two men were seen around Elliott’s place the morning after the theft. Were you the other man?’
This question rather knocked the defence flat. It was unexpected.
Thirty days in jail was the sentence.
Stolen Hens. About two weeks ago a henhouse belonging to Joseph Fee was broken into and a dozen hens stolen.
David Hogan was charged with the theft, but pleaded not guilty.
On the evidence of Abstein, a second-hand dealer, who buys anything, Hogan was committed to jail for 30 days.
Abstein swore that Hogan was the man who sold him four hens, which were afterwards identified by Fee. Hogan protested again and again that he was not.
Eleven previous convictions were registered against the prisoner, but because he had not been up for over three years his Worship said he would make the sentence as light as possible.

Rachel Homan finishes winless at Players' Championship
Ottawa’s Rachel Homan remained winless at the Players’ Championship, losing her final round-robin game 8-3 to Scotland’s Eve Muirhead in Friday’s evening draw.
Homan (0-5) had difficulty holding off her opponent right from the start as Muirhead opened with three points in the first end at Mattamy Athletic Centre. Muirhead added a deuce in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones, meanwhile, stayed undefeated by downing South Korea’s EunJung Kim 8-2 in the afternoon draw of the Grand Slam of Curling tournament. Jones, the Pool A leader and reigning world champion, was the only women’s skip to win all five of her round-robin games.
Muirhead (3-1) finished second in the pool above American Nina Roth (3-2) and Team Rocque (2-3) skipped by Edmonton’s Laura Crocker. Kim was 1-4 and Homan finished last.
Anna Hasselborg (4-1) of Sweden defeated Calgary’s Chelsea Carey (1-4) 7-3 in six ends in the late draw to finish first in Pool B.
Also in Pool B, Winnipeg’s Kerri Einarson (3-2) was a 7-6 winner over American Jamie Sinclair (3-2) and Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni (2-3) beat Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa (2-3) 8-2.
The playoffs were set to begin Saturday and the finals were scheduled for Sunday.
Calgary’s Kevin Koe led the men with a perfect 5-0 record in Pool B when he beat Brendan Bottcher (1-4) of Edmonton 6-4 in the afternoon draw. Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., followed at 4-1 after a 7-6 victory over Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers (1-4).
Toronto’s John Epping and American John Shuster were 2-3.
Niklas Edin (4-1) led Pool A. The Swedish player capped his round-robin schedule with a 5-4, extra-end win over Brad Jacobs (1-4) of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
Jason Gunnlaugson of Winnipeg and Mike McEwen, also of Winnipeg, were 3-2 while Bruce Mouat and Kyle Smith, both of Scotland, were 2-3.
