mmk, so my thoughts on Sonic movie 3
I very much enjoyed myself watching this movie although I did find that the jokes were pretty darn corny but I knew they would be corny heading in and I still laughed at them so corny but funny. Jim Carrey had no right having so much chemistry with himself in a silly goofy dance scene no less. It was annoying watching eggman/Robotnik call Gerald anything but grandpa like a normal person but I also cringe inside when Boom!eggman tries to use "hip" language so that's just me not liking boomers and early gen x trying to sound like stereotypical gen z teens lol (and I've personally never heard teenagers say stuff like that so come on, writers. Get off of tiktok please). Gerald as a character was also weirdly wacky in this but he was being played by Jim Carrey, I guess I shouldn't have expected anything like the game characterization lol. Speaking of characterization, Shadow's was great! I am stealing that revenge guac line. But seeing him dream with Maria and relive the ptsd of her death and the relationship they had with each other was very good, better than what Sega did to him during the 2010s (good thing I was out of the loop then). That moment where he sees Sonic's reaction to injured Tom and has the flashback to Maria... yeah. But boy still had his mind on revenge and we needed the movie to be nearly two hours long so he doesn't let that change his trajectory, yet. Rewriting his backstory so that he was not made by Gerald but discovered inside a meteorite is alright, his canon backstory in the games isn't realistic in any way so I get it, and this will likely lead up to introducing the Black Arms to the SCU.
But since I am on the subject of Shadow here, what I did not like was that they don't give you time to let it sink in that Shadow has um, "died". I say it in quotes because we saw no body but the explosion is meant to make you assume he's dead. Also, if the games didn't kill off Shadow for good, what makes you think these lighthearted comedy films for the family will? I mean, the end credit scene introduces Metal Sonic, who can only really have been made by Robotnik so I'm assuming neither he nor Shadow are really dead cuz he probably used Shadow's quills as a power source now that they're talking about Chaos energy. But anyway, instead of the movie giving you the time to realize oh wait, Shadow sacrificed himself and just let you sit on that feeling of this poor alien hedgehog who had everything taken away from him dying for the good of humanity because that's what his human sister would have wanted, Tails did an exposition and just... tells you. And then Team Sonic has their moment or whatever, it just... didn't feel quite right. Whereas in Sonic Adventure 2, you have the whole cast just being like "wow, that just happened", Sonic gifting Rouge Shadow's inhibitor ring, the image of Shadow superimposed over the earth... I get emotional thinking of that part and I haven't reached it in my own gameplay. There was like literally no time to get emotional during the movie. It's like Tails pretty much said "Shadow and eggman died" and they move on even tho Sonic was the one that had the moment with Shadow that helps turn him around, that they teamed up to save the earth, they had a BONDING MOMENT. WHY AREN'T YOU MOURNING HIM MORE??? Probably just the executives butting in and saying "nooooo, don't make the kiddies cry, they're here to laugh and make us money enjoy themselves with silly talking superpowered animals!" They did Shadow so much good for his characterization in this movie and then just sweep him under the rug like that? Nawwwwr
I have more thoughts on the movie but I ranted enough lol. Still think it was worth going to the theater for, and like I said, it was a fun watch and I liked it. Just kinda mad with how they ended things with Shadow... for now. And I was quite excited to see them introduce both Metal and Amy, yay! Am I excited for Sonic movie 4? Not really, as this is starting to look like the mcu and I say that as someone that was a big fan of the mcu back in the day and had a freaking crush on Tom Hiddleston because of it. But, I'll probably watch it anyway cuz there's no way three movies can condense the vast amount of history, stories, and characters that exist in Sonic's universe[s]. As long as they don't make another Knuckles show that focuses more on human OCs than the titular anthropomorphic character, we should be fine.

So, I finally watched Sonic 3 a couple days ago. Here's my full review of the film:
Spoilers under the cut!
I loved the film. The entire movie was like a big homage to Sonic Adventure 2 which was great. My favorite scenes were with Shadow and Maria; specifically how Shadow was characterized. In the past games, Shadow is portrayed as some a-hole who doesn't value the lives of others. And that's simply not who he is. For example, in NO universe would Shadow say this:
Shadow is someone who's trying to find himself, but that journey is difficult because he lost the one person who truly cared about him. He's not a heartless monster, so I appreciate the producers for not portraying him like that. Instead, they wrote him how he acted in SA2 which was a perfect decision. He's very in-character in this film which made his friendship with Maria all the more impactful.
I also like that Team Sonic was utilized equally in this film. I haven't watched Sonic 2, but I know that Tails doesn't do much in that movie (which is why he's barely in most of the promotional stuff). So it's good the producers gave him something to do in this movie alongside Sonic and Knuckles. Tom and Maddie also playing supporting roles was great. They're so different but that's what makes their dynamic work. Crazy, they're human characters in a Sonic movie that I actually like!
And of course, Jim Carrey was a delight. The fact that he played both Gerald and Eggman was hilarious. You wouldn't think an actor interacting with himself would work so well, but it did! Carrey has such a goofy charm that he adds to all the characters he plays, and that alone yielded a lot of funny moments involving the two Robotniks. And the fact that Eggman went through a whole character arc and became a hero was unexpected, but I'm all here for it! It was cool to see him have a change of heart, since we don't get stuff like that in the games (as far as I remember).
The only thing I don't like about the movie was when Sonic got mad at Knuckles and stole the Master Emerald, even though Sonic took an oath to never use the Master Emerald ever again. I thought that was really selfish and out of character for Sonic. Watching him getting blinded by rage was stupid, but that was my only real issue with the film. That one decision Sonic makes isn't enough to ruin the movie for me.
I ended up really liking Sonic 3. Great movie! And if you're aware of mid-credits scene, you can imagine I'm hyped for the next film!
#tess is talking#This got long so like if you read#OH and the fact that Shadow roller skates because Maria skates around is SO CUTE!!!#Little details like that give these characters so much depth and I'm all for that

Ok my thoughts on the trailer
Overall, I liked everything about this trailer aside from the main character, which is a weird position to be in. I know they're probably just putting all the funny one-liners in the trailer to draw the kids in, but the problem is that they're really unfunny to me and quite a lot of other people, and aside from one joke from Knuckles they're ALL coming from Sonic. And let's not pretend this is an issue exclusive to this trailer, just for one example in movie 2 during the sequence when they're exploring the owl temple in Siberia Sonic compares the owl and echidna conflict (that, may I remind you ORPHANED him and led to him being isolated on earth for ten years) to Vin Diesel and the Rock, and two minutes later he calls Knuckles the Winter Soldier because.... revenge???? Russia???? The sad thing is immediately after these painfully unfunny references there is some genuinely good dialogue between Knuckles and Sonic. Like 75% of Movie Sonic dialogue is good/neutral, but then the other 25% is the jokes which I have just never found funny, and that's what they decided to show off in this trailer, so that's what I'm judging.
As for everything else, my only other complaint was that we almost definitely just saw most of the movie (I'd say about 70% or so). Obviously it remains to be seen, but we've got the moon blowing up, Gerald and Eggman teamup, the Eclipse Cannon, working with GUN, going to space, if you look closely both the Chaos Emeralds and a Super Sonic trail of light, Gerald and Shadow gonna betray Eggman, and a LOT more. Like the first trailer set up Sonic and co teaming up with Eggman as one of the main plot points and now we already know Eggman's gonna betray them. Sure this stuff may seem obvious to us Sonic fans who know all the lore and have been theorizing for months, but the average kid who's just vaguely excited for this movie probably has not thought that much about it. Like you shouldn't set up plotlines in one trailer and then show the conclusion to those plotlines in the next trailer, I feel like that should be obvious.
One thing I'm really glad they didn't show however was who was responsible for Shadow's tragic backstory. Unless they have straight up changed who was responsible for Maria's death (which seems wildly fucking unlikely and extremely extremely stupid so I'm praying that they haven't done anything that ridiculously dumb) then it appears like that will be the big twist of the film so all the heroes feel really dumb/bad for teaming up with them. idk how they're gonna fit all this into a movie that isn't even two hours but we will see.
Everything else? Shadow and Maria was peak, Jim Carrey appears to be playing Gerald seriously thank fucking god, and Knuckles and Tails are good. Barely saw any of Tom and Maddie so I'll wait til later to judge.
