As the reader, I love J.E.D.D but if this was my reality they'd have to put me on Luna City. Mars, even. Just somewhere far away, otherwise I'd be in the streets every day like Tully Mardi telling everyone that this kid is crazy

Dear Caroline:

A few days ago I have finished The Will To Battle, and I have really enjoyed it, like most of your recommendations. In fact, I am considering the whole tetralogy (book 4 remains to be read) as very likely to be this year's best fiction read. For non-fiction, the best candidate so far is Jonathan Haidt's The Righteous Mind.

I think I have said this before of previous installments, but I agree with your descriptions a lot. It feels too good to be true, and rich and decadent, like some fancy Viennese cake. I am also really surprised at how much it seems to deal with lots of issues that are easy to connect with EA: the Utopians are so clearly idealized longtermists, including the Mardi bash's utilitarian calculations on the value of future worlds versus their utopian but stagnant present. The whole division of the world into Sniper versus JEDD Mason's partisans also echoes very well, philosophically speaking. Defenders of OS feel very clearly your run-of-the mill utilitarians, even if perhaps too parochially attached to their present. As you'd guess, I really like Jehovah - his view of things really connects with my deontological inclinations and my personal obsession with Truth. And yet he also subverts some of my prejudices: I tended to feel that Utilitarianism is a philosophy for gods, or people with god-complexes, gazing without distinctions upon the mass of humanity and coldly calculating the maximum accumulated good possible. But it is easy to see with JEDD Mason how unworldly and alien a pure truthful deontology can be, with complete disregard for the world and its will and wishes in a way only a God can manage.

One thing does surprise, not of the books, but of your goodreads - the lack of any mention to Perhaps the Stars. I doubt you disliked it so much as to subject it to a very Masonic Damnatio Memoriae. You could have been too busy to read it (2021 was it, when it came out?), but you found time for reading others things. Well, I'll go through it carefully in the not-so-distant future and come back with my thoughts.

I was thinking about which of your recommendations I shall try this month. I have just started Schelling's The Strategy of Conflict, but although I am sure you've read this rationalist classic (most likely, at some scandalously young age), you do not reference it, so I cannot smuggle it through that door. We shall see...
