Research #1 - 'Rona vs. College Kids

A study done by Jane Cooley Fruehwirth, Siddhartha Biswas and Krista M. Perreira took extensive data on the overall mental health and stressor signs of 419 first-year students between the ages of 18 and 20 from October 2019 to February 2020, right before the pandemic, and again in June and July of 2020, during the pandemic. Their study provides descriptive data and numbers on these mental health signs and stressors by demographic as a way to show us how students in specific demographics were affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This is important because it provides us with some very crucial and very detailed information that could help us get a better grasp on how the pandemic is affecting college students as a whole. 

One very important thing the study shows is the jump in prevalence of moderate to severe anxiety in this group of students, which saw a rise from 18.1 percent of students to 25.3 percent of students in just the first four months of the pandemic, meaning that 1 in 4 students in this study reported moderate to severe anxiety after only four months of the coronavirus pandemic. Whites, females of all ethnicities, and students who identify as a sexual or gender minority showed the biggest increases in moderate to severe anxiety by demographic. 

The doctors also discuss the jump in prevalence in moderate to severe depression during the same four month gap, which jumped from 21.5 percent to 31.7 percent in those same four months, raising the average from about 1 in every 5 students to almost 1 in every 3. Non-hispanic blacks, females of all ethnicities and students who identify as a sexual or gender minority showed the biggest increases in moderate to severe depression by demographic. As black woman, I find it interesting, though admittedly unsurprising, that black people in general showed the biggest jump in the depression category. I personally struggled with both anxiety and depression during the first four months of the pandemic and found myself in  therapy to work through it. A lot of my friends also struggled with anxiety and depression and it took a major toll on them as well. 

Difficulties with isolation and remote learning also personally affected me, making it more difficult to perform at a high level during the end of my senior year. Not being able to work however did not have much impact on my life, seeing as I maintained my job during the time of the study and kept a job during the summer of 2021, but the fear of my family or myself contracting COVID-19 through me working was and still is a constant fear in my mind.

With how all the rules are changing on twitch its just a matter of time before they get rid of anyone becoming a mod for that reason alone that so many are under age. They allow women to breast feed on twitch but not for them to show their nipples,yet men can as if thats the worst thing on twitch.

I've heard Eugenia Cooleys stream is toxic, theres youtube vids about how innapropriate it is. I've never tuned in though. I do like JCs stream, and Kian is getting there too. Plus JC is live right now doing the irl thing.

It's just so...cringe to me. Like, I hate when people apply the world "problematic" to everything, but I feel like the whole fans as mods thing is actually problematic, in that it is a problem waiting to happen and it's actually kind of creepy and weird.

You are essentially taking these kids who are obsessed with you and putting them in this position of doing a job for you. They now not only have the mistaken impression that they are friends with you, but now they have a lot of power over the rest of the fandom. Power that will be abused, or that they will be accused of abusing at some point. They will become either enemies of the rest of the fandom, or start being treated like celebs in their own right.

Not to mention you've got these kids dropping their whole lives, going without sleep, neglecting school, and for what- to mod some guy's 36 hour stream? I can't believe the legality of that hasn't been called into question yet, honestly.

It's not good. It shouldn't be happening. And it's only going to take one really bad situation for it to be stopped enitrely. And there will be something soon, I can almost guarantee it.
