Bechdel Testing Ninjago

So, a little while ago I did the Bechdel test on Ninjago because I've always seen the show as sort of an interesting case study in how women are portrayed in cartoons. Of course, I'm aware the Bechdel test originated as a joke and something passing the Bechdel test doesn't make it feminist/not. Rather, or for me at least, it's an indication of how deficient female representation can be at an aggregate scale. As a way to analyze Ninjago, I feel it works as it shows how female representation over the course of the show. If you're interested I'll now discuss my thoughts on how the analysis went season by season. DISCLAIMER: I did this for fun.

The pilot was easy. Nya's the only one, so test failed across the board. The first episode that passed the test was when Jay's parents came to visit. Yay Edna! Mystake does show up in episode 7 but, I don't count it as she has not yet been named. 12&13 had a kid's mom in a bus which I decided was enough cus hey, Mom's a name she uses.

Here's where we really get going. Patty Keys, their real estate agent continues to show up through seabound as a background character, which is pretty cool imo. Episode 5, Mystake finally gets named. Episode 6 was huge for my chart as it's the introduction of Misako. You'd think episode 7 is when her and Nya talked but that's actually when Nya and Gayle had a lil convo. From then on I spent the episodes just staring at the Nya and Misako thinking "talk to her talk to her talk to her." Fortunately, when they did speak, Nya and Misako would be discuss like science, maps, and fate of the world so I never ran into a problem with rule 3. That is, until Rebooted.

The good news is Pixal's here so it'll be years before we fail rule 1 again. The bad news is we've got a love triangle so goodbye rule 3. Nya actually talked to her student, Sally, and Pixal quite often but it was so often about Jay or Cole so I would just be scouring the episode for a single exchange where they talked about anything else. During the Tournament, Nya, Pixal, Skylor, and Misako were all in different groupings and it was rare that Tox or Camille would say something so no rule 2/3 successes until late season.

The good news is, the love triangle is over so we're back to rule 2 usually meaning rule 3. The bad news is, Pixal's in Zane's head so we're back to hoping Misako and Nya say something to eachother. Nya usually shared her scenes with Wu, Ronin, and Jay during these seasons so chances were few and far between. However, unlike the first few seasons where the default was male, we're now getting some female henchmen (Bansha and Dogshank) so that made things easier.

Thank you for being in Day of the Departed Edna Walker. Early Hands of Time was tough because Nya, Misako, and Commander Macchia were rarely in the same scenes. In the latter half of the season though, we thankfully see the return of Pixal. Maya also helped us with some wins.

What a breath of fresh air. Thanks to Harumi & Ultraviolet's introduction, Pixal's return, Mystake's upgrade to a reoccuring character, and Nya & Misako's continued support, failing even rule 3 is pretty rare during the Oni Trilogy. We run into some complications during Hunted because though we have Skylor and the aforementioned characters in Ninjago and Faith & Jet Jack in the First Realm, sometimes people don't talk to eachother. And that's ok. Overall, smooth sailing.

Ah??!? What happened. Worry not. I realized this was, in part, because the Oni Trilogy had 20 minutes worth of chances for women to speak to eachother, these were only 10 minute episodes. So, for the sake of comparable units of analysis, I considered each pair of episodes to be 1 episode. I'll show both charts until DR.

It looks a little better, but it's still not at Oni Trilogy levels. Still, I'd be curious to see what the test would look like if I dissected the earlier episodes into 10 minute chunks because it's probably not a great sign if 10 v 20 minutes makes such a big difference. Ok, proceeding. The Fire Chapter was usually pretty successful because Pixal, Aspheera, or Nya would usually end up talking at one point or another. Gayle even helped at one point. The Ice chapter usually achieved successes through Nya talking to Sorla. In one episode, I counted the Preminent's roars as conversation with Pixal. The Ice Chapter had quite a few failures largely because, as in previous seasons, all the women were split up.

Despite the fact that Nya was one of the longest lived ninja, Prime Empire has total failures at levels not seen since before season 2. This is largely because for the most part, Pixal and Nya are never in the same episode. Racer 7 helps but she was only there for a bit. I should point out that I feel like the 10 minute era is really when Pixal starts feeling like part of the team to me. She's always part of homebase meetings and always plays a key part in missions. Alas, if she's not in episodes with Nya, that's not going to show up on my chart. It's a reminder of the fact this test doesn't show substance.

Master of the Mountain is similar to the other seasons of its era. The fact the 10 minute era tended to show its plots episode by episode (ex: Ep 3 = Plot A, Ep 4 = Plot B, Ep 5 = Plot C) rather than all in one really takes a toll on the test. For the most part, Nya and Vania were our only chances for success and it was rare they'd share an episode. We also had the rare rule 3 failure with the Queen of the Munce episode. Thanks Jay. The Island only had Nya until they found Misako, so it was struggling even more.

It feels right to see all green when it's a Nya season. In the beginning of Seabound, they put Nya, Pixal, and Maya on a boat together and by jove it made things easy. Late season was a bit trickier because Nya was on her own journey. Crystalized had Skylor, Pixal and some ressurected villains saving the day. Late Crystalized is the way it is because it had so, so many different groupings. I have a chart based on groupings and this season was such a challenge.

I really felt the difference with Dragons Rising. I mean, you can see the difference, but it was even more clear when doing my data collection because it was just so easy. Rather than grabbing at scraps of dialogue like I had to do in early seasons, there was often a wealth of more meaningful conversation between female characters to choose from. As with the Oni Trilogy, a female villain with a female henchman makes things easy because they scheme together. We also had Nya and Sora on a joint quest. Funnily enough, there is a rare rule 3 failure because Sora and Kreel only talked about Kreel's friend in one episode. Episode 17 had the classic split up issue and actually would've failed entirely if not for Agent Underwood, which is actually a great example of my next point. You can really tell how male is no longer the default because not only is there the introduction of all the fantastic new female main characters, but also there's plenty of random female characters scattered throughout. I haven't seen DRS2P2 yet but I expect it'll be more of the same. I should mention I also made a chart with the reverse (two named men in an episode who talk about eachother about something besides a woman). Only three episodes fail in any capacity. (Say thank you to the Akita, Pixal, and Harumi solo episodes). If you read this whole thing, thank you. I had a lot of fun doing it. Let me know if there's any other charts I can do!

ok. I tried to do this challenge by @swampythesweetsketch , but I have no clue how to get past these season rewrites. I hope you like what I was able to do so far though.

1. Skybound

A new genie wanting to corrupt the realm was released into the world. Wu doesn't have the time to get the entirity of the original elemental's kids, so he recruits Jay and Nya, the one's he believes are the most powerful to beat him. Kai joins in halfway though when meeting the genie and wishing for the power to protect his sibling.

It's Kai's wish that rewrites the timeline back to the original one but without Mr. Powers finding the lamp the genie was in. All three of the elemental kids remember what happens.

I think the wish Kai would make would be "I wish I just had the confidence to protect my sister instead of sticking to power!"

2. Legacy of the Green Ninja

Wu is confroted by Misako who witnessed Garmadon make a entrance back into Ninjago. Neither wanted to do it, but they take Lloyd back from Darkley's school to train. But it's revealed that Lloyd left the school and he went to look for his father.

Nya and Kai will hear about the Dark Lord's son going to join his father so they help to find the kid. They disguise as Garmadon's helpers to convince Lloyd to train under them.

Wu tries to get the Smith kids again (well, first in his perspective) , only to find out they are gone. Misako is kidnapped by Garmadon and asked to rule with him. She goes along with it to not get hurt, even if she knows that Garmadon isn't purely evil.

At one point, the Smiths and Wu and Lloyd finally meet up with Wu handing Kai the golden weapons, believing he has a chance to be the green ninja. But Lloyd steals them, having a surge of power go through him.

5) I mentioned earlier that he’s got a sizeable lexicon of obscenities, swear words, expletives, and otherwise filthy language from Darkley’s, but he’s ALSO got a fairly good grasp of the basics of some of the more technical side of Being Evil - breaking and entering, setting traps, picking pockets, assessing a room, finding what you need, and then putting it all back where you found it, etc. Unlike his vulgar vocab, this knowledge has stayed useful to him in his work as a ninja, since a LOT of it has to do with being stealthy (which isn’t a coincidence, since ninja were originally assassins).

((Had a ninjago fan season idea that takes place after s13 and semi centers around Kai ninjago. This seasons theme: Vacation gone wrong! I have segmented it into episodes for convenience. I uh, may or may not dedicate some time to drawing content for this thing, so I apologize in advance. ((also it is. a long post.

Episode 1 - Answering machine going off and its’ Ronins voice over the machine: 'Looks like I’m gonna run late.. ugh this whole thing is falling apart isn't it. But we'll make it work. I got you a ferry to take you there, one of the cruise ships. It was the least I could do for now... I'll meet you there, I promise.'     >Cuts to Dareth on the boat, taking him and the rest of the people to ‘Aves Isle’.    >While everyone is getting off, Dareth helps a naga lady with carrying some of her stuff because Dareth ninjago.    >Naga ladys' name is 'Olive', she is a semi native. She starts talking about the islands' history. 'there used to be a temple but we don't know what happened to it, but it sunk into the ground.    >two investigate the area because Dareth has time to wait on Ronin.    >Upon finding whats’ left of the area and entering, the atmosphere changes and inflicts a weird curse or whatever.    >Dareth starts getting progressively more pushy Episode 2 - After s13 Wu wants to do more adventures so the bounty is just flying wherever the wind takes it I guess w/e {{Also realized I didn’t write much for Wu this entire rest of the story so I am assuming he’s having a grand ol’ time being on vacation}}    >wow it is night time, the bounty is flying in    >The crew ask where they are and Zane starts to go on his normal informative spiel before getting cut off.    >Oh there’s a thing on the radar. Episode 3 - The remaining ninja visit the two who are in 'time out' before deciding to have a look around the island.    >They take a nice walk down the beach Cole reminisces about the time Kai was extremely afraid of water    >Kai frowns as a laugh track is played. Claims he has gotten better at it but screams when Nya splashes him.    >Zane and Jay are done with service and its like 'okay how about we try to get out again?’    >Zane suggests doing it in the broad daylight since the dragons went out at night and may be nocturnal    >they try    >they get taken out again    >another round of community service    >sees another aircraft fall out of the sky    >guard: wow more property damage.    >sundown. lloyd notices that something strange is happening with some of the residents randomly getting more nippy and then not. strange. (Ninja get into an arguments with the locals or whatever)    >Stop by community service area    >Jay is now frustrated    >rest recuperate at where they parked the bounty    >Nya: well nothing is really going on here we can probably leave once the two are done breaking the law     >Ronin shows up to the area and is greeted sourly by Jay ninjago

Episode 4 - The ninja are ready to leave when they notice a weird ominous structure that wasn't there before.    >Crew investigate    >oh its hot. you can go in, Kai ninjago    >kai enters    >oh frick fire dareth    >kai ninjago, walking out and is krispy: there is a problem.    >three get out of service    >ronin asks if the little runner ships are 'truly' important    >hekcin steals their engine or whatever    >regroup at the bouty    >Kai: hey uhh, Dareth is peeved haha, I don't get it though he and I hang out every now and then.    >Ronin, internally: oh god he's really mad I didn't follow plans to a T-    >the ninja exchange awkward glances of guilt    >decide it'd be best to talk to him tomorrow, or try to. Also, more people are randomly getting upsetti, Jay is still frustrated.

Episode 5 - jay still has a bad attitude. lloyd is also starting to get upset. Cole tries to diffuse the situation but it causes the two to point their noses up at each other in silent anger. great.    >Kai enters in the temple again, which is even more built than it was before.   >Dareth being snarky   >kai apologizes and tells him he wasn't aware of it, and that he thought the two were good friends, reminding him of the times they hung out outside of mission things.   >Dareth calms down a bit   >finds a reason to be mad again.   >Ronin shows up   >'ronin?'   >''Told you I'd meet you here, what didn't you believe me? not really much of a vacation. How about we get some fresh air?"   >Dareth approaches   >oh no he's really hot.   >cheek caress with the robotic arm. gae.   >two head out. Room is no longer unbearably hot. good!   >squad enters in. goes into one of the inner chambers   >oh look the towns people overtaken by rage are building. nice.   >oh no jay and lloyd are fighting again.   >grabs attention of workers.   >the ninja get their butts handed to themselves, and lose Jay and lloyd in the process. nice   >cuts to Ronin and Dareth walking on the beach.   >Ronin smooth talking, normal Ronin behvior   >Flames and whatever fade from Dareth and he snaps out of it completely and immediately starts pouring out how he feels bad about being rude to Olive and whatever the bad guy is and what the plans of the temple are.   >Ronin: maybe we should tell the ninja. I don't want us to get involved anymore.

Episode 6 - Ronin informs the ninja of what's up.   >Nya: oh no we gotta stop this !   >Dareth: I want to help.   >Ronin: no we are on vacation we shouldn't have to; leave it up to them.   >Dareth: no I started this, this is my fault, I have to make it up to Olive and everyone <:(   >Ronin: :/   >Zane: we should focus on. not making the locals angry because that seems to draw them towards the temple.   >Ninja proceed to do good deeds, while part of them break off to do research   >learn about the bad guy dunn dun dunn!

episode 7 - Kai ninjago somehow is the one keeping the most level head out of everyone here and things get tense again. is it potentially out of character? Well he's mad that lloyd and jay are overtaken but he's doing a good job at self control.   >cuts to lloyd and Jay   >lloyd: this is dumb! why are we helping!? We're supposed to be stopping this!   >Jay: we're helping because YOU dragged us into this with your plan!   >argue. great   >bad guy laughing or whatever, oh the voice has a physical form that's manifesting from the heat of the temple. 'Good, soon I will be reborn and reclaim the island!'   >Olive inform him that Dareth has broken the spell   >bad guy furious and confused but is also like 'whatever we have a lot more important things to worry about'   >Nya and Zane are stepping on each others' toes.   >ronin and Dareth relay what they learned.   >kai sitting in the bounty looking disheveled   >'Human pinata makes the kids happy'. Horrifying.   >story about how the bad guy was dispersed after 'other beings' landed on the island and taught he locals the importance of peace and not war or whatever. It was probably some Oni and dragons chillin.   >Cole: oh! I mean we have two 'other beings' and those are the dragons, but they seem really angry and territorial   >Kai: maybe they want something and just haven't gotten it? Episode 11 - The dragons fly overhead and do their little dance and show and yaay, the people are happy!   >people working on the temple stop and notice in awe and decide to go outside to have a look.   >bad guy takes notice and a n g r y, number of the workers stop and go enjoy the show. Some even going to their work areas and getting snacks and things like a festival. Bad guy: where is my messenger?! Never Have I Ever (Ep. 2) Kai Smith

Kai: Hi, I'm Kai. You know me from the band, Boyz Up. Today, I'm going playing never have I ever. There are 20 questions. Oh, this is going being fun. Let's do it. NINJA-GO!

1. Owned a pony

I'm sorry, I never have one. I like ponies but it's not my thing. Sorry. I could ride one, but it doesn't have my energy to have fun with it.

2. Danced

I danced like crazy. Can you see me dancing while I'm going to the studio? Man, I'm a weird AF.

3. Voted

Only humans can do that. I'm a Lego. So, never. But if I was a human, sure I can. I have to be American to do that, register, and I'm good to go since November. Man, 2020 is about to change here.

4. Been to a wedding

Never have one. But if I would go to Jay and Nya's wedding, I would be Jay's best man. But I don't want to see Nya and Nadakhan from season 6, oh wait... I'm stuck in the sword. I forgot about that.

5. Talked without thinking

I've done it often. I have to say or do something but how stupid of me trying to set up a guitar, but the amp I'm trying to turn up a little bit. It's too loud, and I can't hear a damn thing! Sorry about that. What was I talking without thinking what to do? Next time, think before what you said.

6. Been able to read without getting tired

If you know me, I read some books to myself. I wouldn't get tired of reading. It's fun but at the same time, it's exhausting. I can read whenever I want. And when it's time to stop, I can stop whenever I want. I'm untired at all.

7. Wanted kids

No, I would never say that. Having a relationship with me and Skylor, yeah, but we're not into talking to that particular thing. If I'm going to be 30, I would like having a least one who can make our world better. For now, not yet.

8. Wanted to time travel

I love time traveling. You've seen me from Season 7, these Time Blade Twins who are trying to steal those blades and take over and go back where it is. We're trying to stop it, and we're not sure of where Sensei Wu was. But in season 8, Cole found the baby. I didn't realize it was Sensei Wu as a baby. Now, he fully develops from time to time, and he went back the way he is. I'm sorry for off-topic but yes I love to time travel but after the battle. I can set back time to see what happened to my friends at the time. However, I can't alter the past. In short, Sure.

9. Been lost while driving

Nope, I would never be lost myself while driving. I mean Ninjago is a good place because the city is very easy for me to find. Never been driving. All of my friends were driving The Bounty, but Zane drove it. I have a car, by the way at my house. So, yeah, I'm unlost, I know where I'm going.

10. Accomplished a successful somersault

I trained to become a ninja. Now, look at me. I made a great somersault, but it will be necessary when I have to.

11. Been the annoying guitar playing friend

I have. People don't hate me, while I played my guitar. Some of them hated me. I have one time when I have to go out and buy some groceries. I played the guitar in the wrong time, and this man wanted me to shut the f*** up. I know right? To make it even more annoying, I played it to him with the song the comes to mind, "Rock Your Body." He said that it was the worst song to play in public and ran out screaming. Oh man, don't mess with me.

12. Slept during class

Yeah, I have. When I got boring with the lecture, I slept right away but I could still hear the teacher's words. I still have a B+ in English.

13. Eaten paper

Oh, never. Why would they eat paper? That's disgusting. Unless it's a dare and you like a papercut from your tongue. Ugh, bloody.

14. Worn clothes to cover a hickey

I would wear some clothes that cover my whole neck, or I would cover something with powder or something that matches my skin and don't talk about it. My other band members were going to talk about it, and I don't like to be in a headline, LEAD VOCAL OF BOYZ UP GOT HICKEYS.

15. Sucked a lemon

I have thought that. It was very sour, and I can't handle with sour. Unless I have a zesty fire.

16. Spelled the word "necessary" correctly on your first try.

The way I spelled it, I said "I 'C' 2 'S's." That's how I spelled it, on the first try. It's like level 3 vocabulary word.

17. Lied about why my homework wasn't done

I lied about it less often. When the teacher asked me about why are you not done with your homework, I said any reason that it is possible to believe the teacher. I did, and I got away with it. The second time, it's not working and I got a 0. Never do that again to your teacher.

18. Been on a roller coaster

Yeah, I have. It was really fun but I'm not afraid of riding one again.

19. Tried to write a love poem

Well, I tried writing one but it's going to work. It has to have a piece of music to it. So, I started writing some poems and my poems turned into some songs. I loved being a poet plus a musician at the same time.

20. Fallen off a swing

I did. It hurts to see me falling to the ground. I tried to swing back forth like a pendulum and it went to fast that I have to jump out. I did and ate it. I would never ride a swing again.

Okay I understand for seasons 1 and 2 that whole thing but uh

Season 3 - Lloyd has to stay away from everyone and could’ve freaking died losing everything, they almost died in space, Zane sacrificed himself for everyone

Season 4 - the ninja are literally going through the five stages of grief (Nya = Denial in her focusing on other things, Kai = Anger in going to a wrestling ring, Jay = Bargaining by being a game show host instead and literally bargaining with his destiny as a ninja, Cole = Depression by moving away from everyone and avoiding using his powers whenever possible, Lloyd = acceptance because he continues to be a ninja), they all went to find their dead friend, Lloyd watches his father die, Zane has PTSD that manifests in the Titanium Dragon, Zane kind of killed his girlfriend to survive

Season 5 = Nya feels like she lost all purpose, Kai feels like he failed Lloyd by not protecting him, Lloyd’s possession could be used as a parallel for all sorts of traumatic shit, Cole (technically) dies, the whole thing is dealing with Morro’s gifted kid syndrome and inferiority complex that twisted into a superiority complex when he died, Lloyd watches his father die again

Season 6 = like OP said Jay watches his gf/best friend die, Kai watched his sister die, the whole season is just destroying the trust they built in each other over the course of years, they have to deal with the uglier side of being a celebrity (no privacy is bad for mental health), Cole is still dealing with how he basically died, Zane is like 90% sure he killed his girlfriend again in that boat scene, their allies and support system’s disappearing with no explanation, Nadakhan is lowkey kind of trying to r*pe Nya by forcing her into a marriage (it’s a kid show so they make it seem like the wedding ceremony is what gives him the powers but given how many cultures don’t consider a marriage valid until consummation…), Echo Zane being completely abandoned just isn’t dealt with, Jay was tortured by pirates

I’d have to rewatch Season 7 to figure that out bc that season was a mess but you get the idea lol
