‘The White King’, Alex Helfrecht + Jörg Tittel
D’après le roman de György Dragomán
D’une grande beauté visuelle qui contraste puissamment avec la dystopie qui lui sert de décor, ‘The White King’ est un film très prenant sur la liberté de conscience dans un monde totalitaire.
On y retrouve des interprètes fabuleux comme Gretta Scacchi, Lorenzo Allchurch, Fiona Shaw et Jonathan Pryce, mais surtout le film parvient à nous surprendre tout le long de sa narration. Il se démarque des autres films dystopiques par ses petits moyens et son inventivité, qui ne le font jamais céder à des facilités de scénario ou au spectaculaire décérébré. Il explore plusieurs pistes et laisse de l’espace à d’autres histoires que l’on peut imaginer (le braconnier, ce qui se passe au-delà des frontières...)
Le protagoniste au visage riche d’expressions ne se lasse pas d’observer, se laisse fasciner par l’autre monde au-delà des grilles, défend ce qu’il croit juste, écoute son intuition, et surtout ne laisse jamais tomber ses convictions. Pas de placement produit ou de flatterie de la consommation, ça repose de beaucoup de films commerciaux! Mélancolique, froid, mais aussi plein d’énergie vitale et vaillante, empli d’espoir et de volonté, ‘The White King’ est un très beau film, à voir.

My opinion on “The White King”
“They all will have to lose something. If not you are a traitor.”
“The White King” takes place in a future society. Has there been a worldwide, destructive war? A deadly epidemic? Or did a world state succeed in shutting down global communication, after which they could conquer all the on high-tech depending countries by using conventional warfare? And after this invasion, did they install a totalitarian regime? You won’t get any real answers to these questions. It looks like a hermetically sealed off camp with no luxury and limited basic needs. The regime can be called fascist. Even a sort of Hitler Youth is present. There’s militaristic tradition to honor “The Homeland”. The food supplies are managed according to strict rules. And apparently, each home is equipped with an intercom system where the daily production and practical information are announced. The Homeland is not a humanitaire society. It’s a society where coercion, control and punishment are key words. And this under the eye of strategically placed surveillance cameras.
The fake blood department had enough stock this time.
Het is in deze commune dat Djata (Lorenzo Allchurch) opgroeit. Een voortdurende sfeer van dreiging en onderdrukking staat een zorgeloos jeugdig leven in de weg. Kwajongensstreken worden hier met harde hand (en boksijzer) bestraft. En wanneer hij met enkele vriendjes tracht zijn voetbal te ontfutselen uit de handen van enkele oudere pestkoppen (zonen van iemand hoogstaand in de militaire hiërarchie waarschijnlijk), draait dit uit op een gewelddadig gevecht in plaats van een soort capture-the-flag spelletje. Daarenboven is zijn vader opgepakt wegens politiek incorrect gedrag. Vanaf dan wordt hun leven er niet eenvoudiger op, worden ze beknot in hun vrijheid en worden bepaalde levensbepalende behoeften ontnomen.
Djata (Lorenzo Allchurch) grows up in this commune. A continuing atmosphere of threat and oppression standing in the way of a carefree youthful life. Mischiefs are punished here with hard hand (and boxing iron). And when he tries to evade some soccer football from the hands of some older bullies (probably someone’s highs in the military hierarchy), this turns into a violent fight rather than a kind of capture-the-flag game. In addition, his father was arrested because of politically incorrect behavior. From then on, their lives will not be simpler, they will be chopped in their freedom and certain vital needs will be abolished.
Action,action,action,action and a even more action !
Obviously the emphasis in this second movie is focused on the action segments. Once again, the story itself is pretty thin and the lack of depth when talking about the characters is omnipresent. But ultimately, this lack is just an advantage. This way they could focus completely on the well-choreographed actionscenes that follow each other at a fast pace. I am convinced that the number of eliminations is a lot higher here. It was a prudent attempt to further deepen the story about the assassination syndicate and the neutral area in the shape of the Continental Hotel. Interesting? Yes. Necessary? No not really. You know what the movie “John Wick” stands for and that’s what you want to see. Sheer brutality, violence and a lot of action. And fortunately, they were very succesfull in that respect.
Is a retirement justified? Hold on. Chapter 3 is being prepared.
I wasn’t particularly impressed by it this time. Even though they moved Wick’s workspace to a more imaginative location and the images from Rome are more eye-catching than those of New York, I got the impression that this movie simply exploited the success of the first part shamelessly. Even Keanu Reeves didn’t have to do his utter best. Granted. The man is very suitable for this role. John Wick’s cool-blooded, stoic gaze and the limited use of dialogues are characteristics which are tailor-made for Keanu Reeves. “John Wick: Chapter 2” is a logical sequel to the unexpected success of the first movie. If you are a lover of the better action-movie, this is definitely is something to watch. Now you’ll also see how the myth John Wick can kill someone with a pencil. Personally, I think it’s time Wick starts to think about his retirement!

Dragomán György elmondása szerint a rendezők Kelet-Európáról gyűjtöttek anyagot, amikor az egyik ügynökük két napig zokogott a regény elolvasása után és figyelmükbe ajánlotta az erdélyi származású író művét. Ahogy a regény, úgy a film is mélyen gyökerezik a kelet-európai diktatúrák történelmében, a rendezőpáros Alex Helfrecht és Jörg Tittel ugyanakkor egy térben és időben nem elhelyezhető, univerzális üzenetet hordozó science-fictiont hozott létre.
A fehér király-ban nem jön a viharvert vagabond, aki a kandallóba révedve elmondja, hogyan jutottunk el idáig és nem is látjuk át teljes egészében a rendszert a megvilágosult felsőosztálybeli dezillúzióin keresztül. Felütésre sokban hajaz a Hunger games-hez: a Homeland polgárai harminc éve egyszerűen, szerényen, a természethez közel élnek. A szántásnak, vetésnek nincs alternatívája. Ám az anyaföld kegyetlen és kérlelhetetlen. Ezt Djatának (Lorenzo Allchurch) is meg kell tanulnia, amikor apját munkaszolgálatra viszik.
De a Főnix bár-hoz hasonlóan a film nem érzelmi katasztófaturizmus, viszont nem is egy disztópikus gladiátorküzdelem terepe.
A film talán legnagyobb erőssége, hogy roppant finoman adja vissza a regénybeli családban húzódó ideológiai töréseket és azt a tündéri köteléket, amely mégis felülírni igyekszik az átjárhatatlan frontvonalakat. Agynes Deyn és Jonathan Pryce kettőse ebből a szempontból nagyon el lett találva, noha előbbi játéka szerintem nem volt egyenletes, viszont annál nagyobb élmény volt nézni.
És mivel a regénynek is talán ez a fő motívuma, így az sem olyan zavaró, hogy máshol a film túl sokat akar és túl keveset ad. Így bizonyos részek, szereplők (pl. Pickaxe karaktere) kicsit lógtak a levegőben. Viszont a jelenetek nagyon kontrasztosak, a film jól építkezik az erőszakos gyermeki lét és a „felnőttek” fenyegető világának epizódjai között.
Amitől tartottam, az végül nem valósult meg és a film nem akart egy látványos disztópia lenni vagy nagyon elrugaszkodni a regénytől. Ugye, a trailer a gigantikus szoborral és a helikopterekkel adott némi alapot ennek a félelemnek. De A fehér király végül abszolút visszaadta azt a szoftos diktatúra élményt, amely a regénynek is sajátja. Magam is meglepődtem, a műfaji eltérésekhez képest mennyire igyekeznek hűek lenni a könyv mondanivalójához és stílusához.
Talán egyedül a könyv legvége, végső felütése lett valamivel kontrasztosabb, amely révén a film némileg más üzenetet igyekszik közvetíteni, mint a regény. De ezt ki-ki döntse el maga. A film is, a könyv is tipikusan olyan, hogy egyik sem vesz el a másik értékéből, mindkettő kiváló élmény, sorrend nélkül is csak ajánlani tudom. Well done!
