Flying to Cayman Islands: Top Events and Festivals to Plan Your Trip Around
Tumblr media
Cayman Cookout
A must-attend event for gourmet lovers, Cayman Cookout is an annual festival in January hosted by world-famous chef Eric Ripert at Ritz-Carlton. Culinary legends, including chefs, sommeliers and mixologists from across the globe, congregate there.
The festival offers interactive cooking demonstrations, wine tasting sessions and splendid beachfront suppers. This event creates a unique opportunity for gourmets to taste lavishing meals prepared by masters in front of the gorgeous landscapes of this island.
Cayman Islands International Film Festival (CayFilm)
Different artists, including actors, filmmakers, and film enthusiasts representing other countries, take part in the CayFilm held on usual July times. It involves workshops, panel discussions, networking events as well as screenings of movies all through the festivals.
It also includes films made by international artists alongside local talents who showcase their skills throughout the year. Cinephiles may enjoy exploring every nook and corner of the Island while booking flights straight into Grand Cayman for CayFilm.
Batabano Carnival
Early May brings Batabano, the largest carnival in the Caymans. This seven-day event highlights music, dancing and the Caribbean style of life, always carried out with much colorfulness. The grand parade is the most important event taking place during Batabano, which sees participants clad in costume parading through George Town’s streets accompanied by soca beats or calypso tunes from substantial loudspeakers spread across the town center.
Moreover, the whole week is filled with street parties, live music and food fairs. It will be a great experience to take part in Batabano, enjoy the vivacity of the Cayman Islands’ atmosphere, and dive into the local culture.
Pirates Week Festival
In November, Pirates Week—Cayman’s leading cultural event takes place. This festival marks the islands’ pirate heritage through an array of fun family activities. The week starts with a mock pirate attack where pirates “invade” George Town, followed by a fantastic display of fireworks.
Throughout this period, parades are coming up with loud drums on the streets, live music, sporting events, traditional craft fairs and dances all over the town. Arriving at this time will make sure that you see the historical past being relieved in front of your eyes during Pirates Week.
Cayman Islands Marathon
Fitness enthusiasts who want to participate or spectate have an opportunity to join the Cayman Islands marathon organization. The marathon, which features a full marathon, half-marathon relay race and children’s run for fun, is held in early December each year.
The course passes through some picturesque sites, such as coastal lines and streets of George Town, for runners. The friendly ambiance during this marathon, coupled with community support, makes it memorable for all kinds of participants regardless of experience levels they may have gained so far. Johnny Nash
Tumblr media
Johnny Lester (Johnny) Nash Jr. was a singer-songwriter and actor, best known for his 1972 hit song “I Can See Clearly Now.” Nash was born on August 19, 1940 in Houston, Texas, to Eliza (Armstrong) and John Lester Nash. He sang in his church choir as a child, and by the time he was thirteen, Nash was singing his own version of Rhythm and Blues hits on the local variety show, Matinee, on KPRC-TV. He also sang for a local radio station, and by 1957, Nash made his debut with the single “A Teenager Sings The Blues,” on ABC-Paramount records.
Nash was initially marketed as a rival to crooner Johnny Mathis and had his first chart hit in 1958 with a cover of Doris Day’s, “A Very Special Love.” He had a major role in the film Take A Giant Step (1959), and won a Silver Sail Award for his performance from the Locarno International Film Festival in Locarno, Switzerland. He also had a role in the film Key Witness (1960) and sang the theme song for the syndicated animated cartoon series The Mighty Hercules (1963-1966). Nash and his manager, Danny Sims, formed JoDa Records in 1964 in New York, but filed for bankruptcy after only two years. They moved to Jamaica and opened a new company called Cayman Music. Nash met Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, and Rita Marley and signed all four to an exclusive publishing contract.
Along with Arthur Jenkins and Danny Sims, Nash formed another label in 1967, JAD Records, in Kingston, and released a top five hit song “Hold Me Tight” in 1968. Nash took Marley to London in the early 1970s and exposed him to a broader audience. The two collaborated for the ballad “You Poured Sugar On Me” and “There Are More Questions Than Answers.” Nash’s biggest hit in his career was his 1972 hit “I Can See Clearly Now,” which sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America (R.I.A.A.). It was later followed by the hit “Tears On My Pillow” in 1975, which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. Nash stepped out of the spotlight for over a decade, spending less time touring and more time with his family back in Houston, but reappeared in 2006 singing with Sugar Hill Recording and Tierra Studios for a brief time.
Nash spent his last year managing rodeo shows at the Johnny Nash Indoor Arena on his ranch near Houston. He died of natural causes at his home in Houston on October 6, 2020, at the age of 80. Nash was married three times and is survived by his wife, Carli, son, John Lester Nash III, and daughter Monica.

Today we remember the passing of Johnny Nash who Died: October 6, 2020 in Houston, Texas
John Lester Nash Jr. was an American singer-songwriter, best known in the United States for his 1972 hit "I Can See Clearly Now". Primarily a reggae and pop singer, he was one of the first non-Jamaican artists to record reggae music in Kingston.
Signing with ABC-Paramount, Nash made his major label debut in 1957 with the single "A Teenager Sings the Blues". He had his first chart hit in early 1958 with a cover of Doris Day's "A Very Special Love". Marketed as a rival to Johnny Mathis, Nash also enjoyed success as an actor early in his career, appearing in the screen version of playwright Louis S. Peterson's Take a Giant Step in 1959. Nash won a Silver Sail Award for his performance from the Locarno International Film Festival. Nash continued releasing singles on a variety of labels such as Groove, Chess, Argo, and Warner Bros.
Nash sang the theme song to the syndicated animated cartoon series The Mighty Hercules, which ran on various television stations from 1963 to 1966.
In 1964, Nash and manager Danny Sims formed JoDa Records in New York. JoDa released The Cowsills' single "All I Really Want to Be Is Me." Although JoDa filed for bankruptcy after only two years, Nash and Sims moved on to marketing American singers to Jamaica, owing to the low cost of recording in that country.
In 1965, Nash had a top five hit in the US Billboard R&B chart, the ballad "Let's Move and Groove Together." That year, he and Sims moved to Jamaica. Their lawyer Newton Willoughby was the father of Jamaican radio host Neville Willoughby. After selling off his old entertainment assets in New York, Sims opened a new music publishing business in Jamaica, Cayman Music. Nash planned to try breaking the local rocksteady sound in the United States. Around 1966 or 1967, Neville Willoughby took Nash to a Rastafarian party where Bob Marley & The Wailing Wailers were performing. Members Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, and Rita Marley introduced Nash to the local music scene. Nash signed all four to an exclusive publishing contract with Cayman Music for J$50 a week.
In 1967, Nash, Arthur Jenkins, and Sims collaborated to create a new label, JAD Records (after their first names Johnny, Arthur, and Danny), and recorded their albums at Federal Records in Kingston. JAD released Nash's rocksteady single "Hold Me Tight" in 1968; it became a top-five hit in both the U.S. and UK. In 1971, Nash scored another UK hit with his cover of Marley's "Stir It Up".
Nash's 1972 reggae-influenced single "I Can See Clearly Now" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in November 1972. "I Can See Clearly Now" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 4, 1972, and remained atop the chart for four weeks, spending the same four weeks atop the adult contemporary chart. The I Can See Clearly Now album includes four original Marley compositions published by JAD: "Guava Jelly", "Comma Comma", "You Poured Sugar On Me", and the follow-up hit "Stir It Up". "There Are More Questions Than Answers" was a third hit single taken from the album.
Nash was also a composer for the Swedish romance film Vill så gärna tro (1971), in which he portrayed Robert. The movie soundtrack, partly instrumental reggae with strings, was co-composed by Bob Marley and arranged by Fred Jordan.
JAD Records ceased to exist in 1971, but it was revived in 1997 by American Marley specialist Roger Steffens and French musician and producer Bruno Blum for the Complete Bob Marley & the Wailers 1967–1972 ten-album series, for which several of the Nash-produced Marley and Tosh tracks were mixed or remixed by Blum for release. In the UK, his biggest hit was with the song "Tears on My Pillow" which reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in July 1975 for one week.
After a cover of Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World" in 1976 and "Let's Go Dancing" in 1979, for many years Nash seemed to have dropped out of sight, with the exception of a brief resurgence in the mid-1980s with the album Here Again (1986), which was preceded by the minor UK hit, "Rock Me Baby". Younger audiences were introduced to Nash's music with the appearance of Jimmy Cliff's cover of "I Can See Clearly Now" in Disney's 1993 hit film Cool Runnings. In May 2006, Nash was singing again at SugarHill Recording Studios and at Tierra Studios in his native Houston. Working with SugarHill chief engineer Andy Bradley and Tierra Studios' Grammy-winning Randy Miller, he began the work of transferring analog tapes of his songs from the 1970s and 1980s to Pro Tools digital format.
On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Nash among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.

Engineering a beauty empire

Engineering a beauty empire
PLUMMER… people are very excited about our 23 shades that focus on the forgotten shades
A passion for chemical engineering and bioenergy carried Dianne Plummer all the way to Sweden. Then, while studying in the Scandinavian country, she encountered difficulty in finding skincare and make-up products.
With sensitive skin and a degree in science, the idea hit her to try her hand at making her own skin-friendly cosmetics. And so, Your True Shade (YTS) beauty line was born.
Boasting 23 shades of foundations, anti-aging skincare and a wide range of skin bronzers, Plummer not only solved her own skin care issues, but won the Development Bank of Jamaica’s (DBJ) Innovation Grant from New Ideas to Entrepreneurship (IGNITE) programme that allowed the company — just two years old — to break even with make up sales at locations such as Fontana.
And so, courtesy of the Branson Centre of Entreprenuership, we sat down with Plummer to understand how she engineered her beauty empire.
Dennise Williams: How did you get started in make -up and skin-care? Why move from chemical engineering to make-up?
Dianne Plummer: I have always had a love for cosmetics, but it was after my inability to find products for my sensitive skin and eczema issues in Sweden that I decided to make my own mineral make-up by using my chemical engineering background. I wanted something that not only didn’t irritate my skin, but also was convenient at the same time.
Dennise Williams: Are you a make-up artist?
Dianne Plummer: Yes, I am a certified make-up artist. I decided to study make-up artistry, as knowing how the products should work would be an asset in production.
Dennise Williams: In Jamaica there are so many international make-up brands…why even bother?
Dianne Plummer: There are a lot of international brands available; however in developing a mineral make-up line, I wanted to supply a product that is healthier for the skin. More and more people are getting concerned with what is in their cosmetics; as a result we are able to capitalise on being a healthy make-up brand with over 23 shade options.
What truly sets us apart from many international brands is the ingredients that have been left out of our products. For example, we do not have any of the following ingredients: parabens, talc, chemical dyes, fragrances, silicones, waxes, PEG, octinoxate, among others that are in conventional make-up.
Moreover, YTS is the first cosmetics line in the Caribbean to receive international cruelty certification from Cruelty Free International in the UK which certifies brands all over the world.
Dennise Williams: When was the official launch of Your True Shade?
Dianne Plummer: YTS became official in July 2015.
Dennise Williams: You appeal to people with sensitive skin….so do other brands….what is special about your brand?
Dianne Plummer: YTS focuses on using natural ingredients, as studies have shown that certain ingredients are not healthy for the skin and cause irritation and blocked pores. We wanted a plant-based approach to our products in addition to make-up that appealed to the typically forgotten shades.
Dennise Williams: What has been market response and where is your brand distributed? Describe the Jamaican make-up market.
Dianne Plummer: The makeup market is a tough market in Jamaica, with a large variety of brands ranging from no-name China brands to high-end international brands. So we have decided to educate and inform people on the skin benefits, as we strongly believe in flawless skin and flawless make-up.
We also stress on our availability of 23 shades that especially focus on the “forgotten” shades. People are very excited about this.
YTS make-up can be found in Fontana Kingston and Discount Beauty Supplies. Our skincare products such as our best-selling bamboo charcoal peel-off masks can be found in all Fontana locations, Discount Beauty Supplies and Earth Elements.
Dennise Williams: Discuss how your business is funded. And how did you come across the DBJ IGNITE programme?
Dianne Plummer: YTS was initially funded out of pocket in addition to close family and a few friends who helped to purchase key items needed to initially start up. In 2016, the Branson Centre of the Caribbean suggested that I apply for the DBJ Ignite Grant for Innovation. They also provided coaching and pitch practice, which aided in our grant funding to further purchase equipment, packaging, ingredients and rebranding.
Dennise Williams: Share how you manage packing supplies and ingredients, and the other logistics involved in running a beauty empire.
Dianne Plummer: Packaging, supplies and ingredients are key areas of YTS. We use an online lab management software to assist us in inventory levels etc. As a registered manufacturer, we also obtain certain benefits when importing key inputs in our manufacturing process. We are forever thankful to the JMA (Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association) who advised us of these.
Dennise Williams: Let’s consider make-up seasonality in Jamaica, what are the trends that are dominating?
Dianne Plummer: There are a few trends that Jamaicans seem to love. One of those is “glow” which basically highlights key facial features such as cheek bones. YTS Glow Powder gives an ethereal glow without the tiny glitter particles. Matte lipsticks are generally trending but for summer, a nice cream lipstick, light YTS Loose Powder Foundation can definitely work with, of course, glow powder.
Dennise Williams: So where will Your True Shade be in the next 5 years?
Dianne Plummer: The vision of YTS is to accentuate the existing beauty of women across the Caribbean and it’s far-reaching Diaspora. Currently, we have products in the Cayman Islands and Barbados and would like to be in another five islands within the next five years.
YTS was also the official make-up of the Barbados film Barrows Freedom Fighter, which won several awards in New York and Los Angeles film festivals in 2017.
